Choose an RTX Spark laptop if CUDA compatibility, Windows tooling, NVIDIA acceleration or the broadest practical local-model support are your priorities. Choose an M5 Pro or M5 Max MacBook Pro if macOS, long battery life, quiet portability and Apple media applications matter more. At the highest memory tier, both platforms can be configured with 128GB of unified memory, so capacity alone does not decide the contest.
The important differences are the software stack, sustained performance, model quantization, battery behavior and the exact laptop configuration. NVIDIA positions RTX Spark as a Windows platform for models up to 120 billion parameters, while Apple’s M5 Pro and M5 Max offer a mature Metal-based ecosystem and exceptionally strong battery claims. Neither platform is automatically faster for every model or runtime.
Which laptop is better for local AI: RTX Spark or MacBook Pro?
For most users who want to run a wide variety of open-source models, an RTX Spark laptop is the safer technical choice because CUDA, TensorRT and NVFP4 are first-class parts of its platform. That compatibility matters for inference engines, fine-tuning tools and projects distributed with NVIDIA-specific instructions.
An M5 Pro or M5 Max MacBook Pro is the better fit when you already work in macOS, value all-day unplugged use, or depend on Apple media software. Apple’s unified-memory design can also reach the same 128GB ceiling as RTX Spark, so the Mac is not automatically limited to small models. The deciding question is whether your software runs efficiently on Metal and whether the model fits with enough headroom for context and runtime overhead.

Quick decision
| If your priority is… | Better starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| CUDA-dependent tools, NVIDIA examples or TensorRT | RTX Spark laptop | It is designed around the CUDA stack and NVIDIA AI runtimes. |
| macOS applications, battery life and Apple media workflows | M5 Pro or M5 Max MacBook Pro | macOS integration and Apple’s power-efficient hardware are the main advantages. |
| Maximum unified-memory capacity | Either platform’s top configuration | Both can be specified with 128GB; software support and bandwidth then become more important. |
| Large models without cloud fees | RTX Spark, subject to the exact model and quantization | NVIDIA gives a platform guideline of up to 120B parameters, not a promise of useful speed for every 120B model. |
What hardware does an RTX Spark laptop provide?
RTX Spark is a laptop platform built around a Blackwell RTX GPU and a Grace CPU. NVIDIA’s 2026 specifications describe a 6,144-core Blackwell RTX GPU, a 20-core Grace CPU, a configurable 45–80W TDP range, up to 128GB of LPDDR5X unified memory and up to 1 petaflop of FP4 AI performance.
| RTX Spark specification | What it means for local AI |
|---|---|
| 6,144-core Blackwell RTX GPU | Provides the CUDA-capable accelerator used by many local inference and training tools. |
| 20-core Grace CPU | Handles operating-system work, data preparation and tasks that are not fully GPU-bound. |
| 45–80W TDP | Performance and fan behavior will vary by the laptop maker’s power and cooling design. |
| Up to 128GB LPDDR5X unified memory | Allows model weights, context and applications to share one large memory pool. |
| Up to 1 petaflop FP4 AI performance | Describes peak low-precision capability; it is not an inference-speed guarantee for a particular model. |
NVIDIA says the platform is intended to “build, prototype, fine-tune, and run AI models and agents locally with the full CUDA stack.” It also advertises models up to 120B parameters with a 1M-token context. Treat both statements as platform guidance: actual usability depends on quantization, context length, runtime overhead, memory allocation and whether all weights remain resident.
What hardware does an M5 Pro or M5 Max MacBook Pro provide?
Apple offers M5 Pro and M5 Max MacBook Pro configurations with up to 128GB of unified memory. The M5 Max reaches 614GB/s of memory bandwidth, a useful advantage when repeatedly streaming large tensors through memory. Apple rates the 16-inch MacBook Pro for up to 24 hours of video streaming with M5 Pro and up to 22 hours with M5 Max; video playback is not the same workload as sustained model inference, but it illustrates the platform’s efficiency target.

| M5 Pro or M5 Max system-on-chip | CPU, GPU, Neural Engine and memory controller are integrated in one package. |
| Up to 128GB unified memory | Can accommodate substantial quantized models, provided the operating system and runtime retain enough headroom. |
| M5 Max bandwidth up to 614GB/s | Supports high-throughput memory access, although real tokens-per-second depends on the software path. |
| 16-inch battery rating: up to 24 hours M5 Pro, 22 hours M5 Max | Strong portability potential; inference loads can reduce runtime substantially from the video-streaming rating. |
| Metal and Apple Neural Engine ecosystem | Works well with software that has been optimized for Apple silicon, but does not provide native CUDA. |
How much model can each laptop actually run?
Memory capacity is only the first filter. A model needs space for weights, the key-value cache used by the context window, temporary activations, the inference runtime and the operating system. A configuration that barely fits the weights may still be impractical because it must constantly move data or reduce the context window.
Why quantization changes the answer
As a rough planning rule, 4-bit weights require about half a byte per parameter before overhead, 8-bit weights about one byte, and FP16 about two bytes. On that basis, a 70B model needs roughly 35GB for 4-bit weights, 70GB for 8-bit weights or 140GB for FP16 weights before caches and runtime allocations. These are estimates, not vendor guarantees; format metadata and the particular quantizer change the result.
| Model size | Approximate 4-bit weight memory | Approximate 8-bit weight memory | Practical interpretation |
|---|---|---|---|
| 7B | About 3.5GB | About 7GB | Comfortable on either platform, with room for context and other applications. |
| 13B | About 6.5GB | About 13GB | Usually straightforward if the runtime supports the chosen format. |
| 34B | About 17GB | About 34GB | Leaves useful headroom on larger-memory systems; context length still matters. |
| 70B | About 35GB | About 70GB | High-memory configurations are preferable, especially for long prompts. |
| 120B | About 60GB | About 120GB | 4-bit operation may fit in a 128GB system, but 8-bit leaves essentially no room for overhead and is generally impractical at that ceiling. |
The 120B figure associated with RTX Spark should therefore be read as a capacity target for suitable quantized models and configurations. It does not mean every 120B checkpoint will run quickly, support a million-token context locally or fit without offloading. A MacBook Pro with the same memory capacity can fit a comparable quantized model if its Metal-compatible runtime supports that architecture.
Context length is a separate memory cost
Longer prompts increase the key-value cache, sometimes dramatically. A model that runs comfortably at a short chat context can slow down, spill to slower memory or fail at a very large context. Check the runtime’s cache format, maximum context setting and whether it uses grouped or quantized key-value storage before treating a vendor’s context claim as a practical target.

RTX Spark: CUDA, TensorRT and NVFP4
CUDA is the broadest advantage for RTX Spark. Many open-source projects publish CUDA installation instructions first, and NVIDIA’s TensorRT ecosystem is designed to optimize supported models for its GPUs. NVIDIA also highlights NVFP4, a 4-bit floating-point format intended to reduce memory use while retaining high throughput on compatible hardware.
This stack is valuable when you need a project’s newest kernel, a CUDA-only extension, GPU-accelerated fine-tuning or an agent framework tested on NVIDIA hardware. Windows laptop support also makes RTX Spark a natural choice for users whose existing tools, drivers or peripherals are Windows-first.
MacBook Pro: Metal, Apple silicon and portability
MacBook Pro uses Apple’s Metal graphics and compute APIs rather than CUDA. Popular local-model applications can work well on Apple silicon when they have Metal back ends, and unified memory avoids copying weights between separate system RAM and VRAM pools. The trade-off is that support varies by application, model architecture and backend version.

Apple’s platform is especially attractive when local AI is one part of a broader macOS workflow involving video editing, audio production, software development or device integration. If a project depends on a CUDA extension, however, you may need a Metal port, a different runtime or a remote NVIDIA machine.
Which one is faster for local AI?
There is no single speed winner. Tokens per second depend on the exact model, quantization, context length, batch size, runtime, driver, cooling profile and whether the laptop is plugged in. Compare the same model file and prompt on both systems, using the same context and measuring prompt processing separately from generated-token speed.
One TechRadar review reported about 25% faster completion on an RTX Spark laptop than on an M5 Max MacBook Pro in a particular local agentic workload. That is useful directional evidence, not a universal benchmark: the extract does not standardize every model, runtime, power mode or test setting, and another workload can produce a different ranking.
What to record in a fair test
- Model architecture, parameter count and exact quantization file.
- Prompt length, requested output length and context-window setting.
- Runtime name and version, with CUDA, Metal or CPU fallback clearly identified.
- Tokens per second for prompt ingestion and generation separately.
- Wall-clock completion time for a repeatable task.
- Plugged-in or battery operation, performance mode and observed throttling.
- Peak memory use and whether the runtime offloaded any layers.
Which laptop is more portable during long model sessions?
MacBook Pro has the clearer published battery advantage. Apple’s 16-inch ratings reach 24 hours for M5 Pro and 22 hours for M5 Max video streaming. Local inference is a sustained compute workload, so expect less than those figures, especially at high utilization, but the ratings show why the Mac is appealing for travel and mobile development.
RTX Spark’s 45–80W TDP range gives manufacturers room to balance speed, heat and battery life. Two RTX Spark laptops can therefore behave differently even with the same core platform. A thinner model may reduce power or clock speed under a long generation session, while a heavier design may sustain higher performance with more fan noise. Check the exact OEM’s weight, battery capacity, charger wattage, cooling description and performance modes.
Do you need 128GB of memory for local models?
No. Memory requirements follow the model and workload, not a universal laptop rule. Smaller 7B–34B models can run with substantially less memory, while 70B-class models benefit from a large pool and long-context work can need more headroom than the weight file suggests.
Choose the larger configuration when you expect to keep a model resident while running an IDE, browser, vector database or transcription pipeline, or when you want to experiment with several models without swapping. Avoid paying for maximum memory solely because a model’s parameter count sounds large; first calculate the quantized weight size and add room for the cache and applications you actually use.
Can you run CUDA on a MacBook Pro?
Not natively. Apple silicon MacBook Pro systems use Metal and do not provide an NVIDIA CUDA GPU. You can run a model through a Metal-compatible application, use CPU execution where supported, or connect to a separate NVIDIA computer over a network, but those approaches are not equivalent to local CUDA execution.
If a project’s documentation explicitly requires CUDA, verify whether its maintainers support Metal before buying a Mac for that workload. A compatibility layer or alternate backend may work for inference while failing for fine-tuning, custom kernels or newly released architectures.
How should you choose between M5 Pro and M5 Max?
Start with memory, then decide whether the Max chip’s additional bandwidth and GPU resources justify its cost and power draw for your workload. M5 Max is the more appropriate choice for consistently large tensors, heavier parallel workloads and users who want the highest Apple configuration; M5 Pro is attractive when battery life, price and ordinary development workloads matter more.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How should you choose an RTX Spark configuration?
- Set a memory target. Estimate the quantized weight size, add context-cache and runtime overhead, then leave room for Windows and your other applications.
- Check the GPU and memory specification. Confirm that the listing actually includes the Blackwell RTX configuration and memory amount you need; product names alone do not establish the installed specification.
- Review sustained-power details. Compare the manufacturer’s TDP mode, cooling system, charger and performance profiles rather than assuming every RTX Spark laptop runs at the same level.
- Verify software support. Confirm that your chosen inference engine, fine-tuning package and extensions support the installed CUDA, TensorRT or NVFP4 path.
- Plan for updates. Leave storage for multiple model files, drivers and cached kernels. Keep a known-good environment file so a driver or runtime update can be reversed.
What are the availability and buying cautions?
NVIDIA announced RTX Spark laptops from ASUS, Dell, HP, Lenovo, Microsoft and MSI on October 16, 2026. Availability, memory options, regional keyboards, warranty terms and pricing differ by manufacturer and country, so verify the exact configuration before ordering.
For MacBook Pro, confirm the chip, unified-memory amount, screen size and storage in the order summary. Memory is integrated and cannot be upgraded later. The same principle applies to RTX Spark LPDDR5X memory: choose the capacity at purchase rather than assuming a future upgrade.

Which platform fits common local-AI workloads?
| Workload | Recommended direction | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| CUDA-only inference engine or extension | RTX Spark | Native CUDA support avoids a backend rewrite or fallback. |
| Local agents using a tested NVIDIA stack | RTX Spark | TensorRT and CUDA tooling are more likely to match published examples. |
| Apple-first creative workstation with occasional AI | M5 Pro MacBook Pro | Good integration and lower-power everyday use can outweigh peak accelerator compatibility. |
| Largest practical Apple model | M5 Max MacBook Pro | Use the highest memory option and bandwidth available in Apple’s lineup. |
| 70B-class quantized chat models | Either high-memory platform | Both can provide enough capacity; validate the runtime and leave context headroom. |
| Experimenting with many community projects | RTX Spark | CUDA is the common denominator for a large portion of published AI tooling. |
| Travel-first development with occasional inference | MacBook Pro | Apple publishes stronger battery targets, although inference reduces runtime from video ratings. |
What is the final verdict?
Buy RTX Spark when local AI is the primary purpose and you want the least friction with CUDA, TensorRT, NVIDIA-optimized formats and Windows software. Its 6,144-core Blackwell GPU, configurable 45–80W envelope and 128GB ceiling make it the more flexible platform for demanding experimentation, but the exact laptop’s cooling and runtime determine the experience.
Buy an M5 Pro or M5 Max MacBook Pro when macOS, battery life and Apple workflows are central. Apple can match RTX Spark’s maximum unified-memory capacity, and M5 Max’s 614GB/s bandwidth is substantial, yet Metal compatibility must be confirmed for every important tool. Treat benchmark claims as workload-specific and choose the machine whose software ecosystem matches the models you will actually run.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a 120B model run interactively on an RTX Spark laptop?
It may fit when stored in a suitable low-bit quantization, but fitting is not the same as responsive generation. Prompt length, key-value-cache growth, runtime overhead, thermal limits and layer offloading can reduce speed sharply, so test the exact checkpoint and context setting you plan to use.
Is unified memory the same as dedicated VRAM for local AI?
No. Unified memory is shared by the CPU, GPU and applications, while dedicated VRAM is reserved for a discrete GPU. Sharing can simplify data movement, but the operating system and other programs still consume part of the pool.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
What happens if a model does not fit entirely in memory?
Runtimes may offload layers to system memory or the CPU, use disk-backed swapping, lower the context window or refuse to load. Offloading can make a model technically runnable while making generation much slower, so leave capacity beyond the raw weight estimate.
How can I compare two laptop listings that use the same platform name?
Read the detailed specification for memory capacity, GPU configuration, TDP mode, cooling, battery and charger. Platform branding does not guarantee identical sustained clocks, noise levels or included memory, particularly among different manufacturers and regional editions.
