The GeForce RTX 5090 is Nvidia’s flagship consumer graphics card, built on the Blackwell architecture. It combines 21,760 CUDA cores with 32GB of GDDR7 memory, a 575W board-power limit and Nvidia’s latest DLSS features. It is also an unusually demanding card to buy and install: the original $1,999 price is no longer a realistic guide to what many shoppers pay, and partner models can require a large case, a 1,000W power supply and careful 16-pin cable installation.
Here is what matters about the RTX 5090 as of August 9, 2026, including its price, specifications, gaming performance, power requirements, dimensions and suitability for AI and content-creation work.

What Blackwell adds
The RTX 5090 is based on Nvidia’s Blackwell GPU architecture. Its hardware includes fifth-generation Tensor Cores for AI workloads, fourth-generation RT Cores for ray tracing, native FP4 support and features designed for neural rendering and neural shaders.
The card’s headline AI figure is 3,352 AI TOPS, while the GPU contains about 92 billion transistors. These figures describe the card’s theoretical capability rather than a guaranteed gaming or application speed. Actual results depend on software support, driver versions, model formats and whether a workload uses the relevant hardware.
DLSS 4 and DLSS 4.5
One of the RTX 5090’s most visible advantages is support for DLSS 4 Multi Frame Generation. In supported games, the GPU can generate up to three additional frames for each conventionally rendered frame. This can make the displayed frame rate much higher, particularly in demanding ray-traced games.
Generated frames are not equivalent to fully rendered native frames. Nvidia’s “up to 8x” performance claim compares a specific DLSS 4 configuration with traditional rendering under selected conditions. The underlying rendered frame rate still matters for responsiveness, and frame generation can introduce latency or visual artifacts if the base frame rate is too low.
By 2026, Nvidia had also announced DLSS 4.5 features for RTX 50-series cards. The announced features include Dynamic Multi Frame Generation and a 6X Multi Frame Generation mode. Availability can depend on the NVIDIA App, game support and whether a feature is still in beta or has received its full release.
Gaming performance
The RTX 5090 is the fastest consumer GeForce GPU, but its advantage changes substantially with the game and test settings. Independent Founders Edition testing has generally found:
- About 20%–50% faster 4K rasterization than the RTX 4090, depending on the game.
- About 27%–35% higher 4K ray-tracing performance in commonly tested workloads.
- Smaller gains at 1080p and 1440p, where the CPU is more likely to limit performance.
These ranges are useful for setting expectations, not for predicting every title. The largest perceived gains can appear when DLSS and Multi Frame Generation are enabled. Nvidia’s claim that the RTX 5090 can be up to twice as fast as the RTX 4090 is therefore not a general statement about native rasterized performance.
For a high-refresh 4K monitor, demanding ray tracing or a heavily modded game with high memory requirements, the 5090 has a clear use case. For 1080p gaming, or for a system with a midrange CPU, its price and power draw are much harder to justify.
Power supply and 16-pin connector requirements
The card’s 575W maximum board power is the graphics card’s own power limit, not the wattage required by the complete PC. Nvidia recommends a 1,000W power supply for the Founders Edition. A heavily overclocked partner card or a system with a power-hungry processor may warrant more capacity.
The RTX 5090 uses a high-power 16-pin PCIe connection, commonly referred to on newer implementations as 12V-2×6. Nvidia’s quick-start documentation supports either a native 600W-or-greater PCIe Gen 5 16-pin cable from the power supply or Nvidia’s adapter connected to at least four PCIe 8-pin cables.
Connector and cable damage has been reported on some RTX 5090 systems. That does not mean every card is defective, but the power connection leaves little room for a partially inserted plug, damaged terminal or sharply bent cable.
Safer installation checklist
- Turn off the PC and connect the power cable before installing the card if that makes access easier.
- Push the 16-pin connector fully into the socket. It should be completely seated, with no visible gap.
- Use the PSU maker’s native PCIe Gen 5 cable when one is supplied and approved for that PSU.
- If using Nvidia’s adapter, connect the required separate PCIe 8-pin cables rather than relying on an unsuitable splitter.
- Leave the cable straight for a short distance beside the connector; avoid a tight bend immediately at the plug.
- Do not add an unapproved extension, splitter or right-angle adapter without verifying its compatibility and current rating.
- Stop using the system and inspect the connection if the plug becomes unusually hot, discolored or difficult to remove.
Size and case compatibility
The RTX 5090 Founders Edition measures approximately 304mm long, 137mm high and 61mm thick. Nvidia describes it as a nominal two-slot card and recommends extra clearance in front of the fans for airflow.
Partner cards are often much larger. For example, the Zotac RTX 5090 Solid OC is approximately 329.7mm long, 137.8mm high and 67.8mm wide, occupying about 3.5 slots. Before buying, check the exact model’s length, height, thickness and recommended clearance against your case—not just the generic “RTX 5090” specification.
Also check whether the card blocks adjacent expansion slots, interferes with front-mounted radiators or leaves enough space for the 16-pin power cable. A card that technically fits the case may still be impractical if the connector has to be bent sharply against the side panel.

The Founders Edition uses Nvidia’s reference configuration and offers a relatively compact two-slot design. Add-in-board cards can provide larger heatsinks, three- or four-fan coolers, liquid cooling, higher factory boost clocks and different power limits.
The trade-offs are higher prices, more occupied slots, greater weight and sometimes higher power consumption. A factory-overclocked partner card still has 21,760 CUDA cores and 32GB of memory; its gaming advantage over a reference-clocked 5090 is normally modest. Choose the model primarily for its cooler, noise level, dimensions, warranty and price rather than assuming a large factory overclock will transform performance.
RTX 5090 for AI and content creation
The 32GB framebuffer is one of the card’s most useful features outside gaming. It can help with local generative-AI models, large image-generation workflows, video production and 3D applications that exceed the practical limits of 16GB or 24GB cards.
Blackwell’s native FP4 support can improve performance and reduce memory requirements when compatible software and models use that format. However, the benefit is not automatic. Model size, quantization format, application support and driver compatibility determine whether a particular AI workload fits and runs efficiently.

The RTX 5090 remains a consumer GeForce product rather than a professional workstation card. It does not provide the same certified-driver positioning, enterprise support or larger memory capacities associated with Nvidia’s workstation and data-center products. For hobbyists, developers and small-scale local AI use, its 32GB capacity can nevertheless be valuable.
Is the RTX 5090 worth buying?
At its $1,999 launch MSRP, the RTX 5090 was an extreme enthusiast purchase but a logical choice for someone seeking the fastest consumer GPU, high-end 4K ray tracing or a large amount of local-GPU memory. At 2026 marketplace prices above $4,000, the value calculation is substantially worse.
It makes the most sense when you specifically need its combination of 32GB VRAM, leading 4K performance and DLSS features. It is harder to recommend for ordinary 1440p gaming, especially if buying it requires replacing the case, power supply and CPU as well as the graphics card.
FAQ
How much does the RTX 5090 cost?
Nvidia’s official Founders Edition MSRP is $1,999, but the card is listed as out of stock through Nvidia’s marketplace. Recent 2026 U.S. listings have been around $4,300–$4,400, with some marketplace prices exceeding $6,400.

Not in ordinary native gaming. Independent testing has found roughly 20%–50% higher 4K raster performance and about 27%–35% higher 4K ray-tracing performance, depending on the game. Up-to-2x claims are mainly associated with DLSS 4 and frame-generation workloads.
What power supply does an RTX 5090 need?
Nvidia recommends a 1,000W system power supply for the Founders Edition. The card itself can use up to 575W and requires either a compatible 600W-or-greater PCIe Gen 5 16-pin cable or Nvidia’s adapter connected to at least four PCIe 8-pin cables.
Does the RTX 5090 fit in a normal PC case?
The Founders Edition is approximately 304mm long, 137mm high and 61mm thick, but partner cards can be about 330mm long and 3.5 slots wide or larger. Check the exact card dimensions, slot clearance, radiator space and room for an unstressed 16-pin cable before buying.
The Bottom Line
The RTX 5090 is an exceptionally fast enthusiast GPU with 32GB of GDDR7, strong 4K ray-tracing performance and advanced DLSS 4/4.5 features. Its 575W power envelope, physical size, connector-installation requirements and inflated 2026 street prices are significant drawbacks. Treat $1,999 as the launch MSRP—not the price most buyers can currently expect—and do not interpret “up to twice as fast” as a universal native-gaming result.
