The GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER was an excellent 1440p graphics card at its January 2024 launch price of $599. In Tom’s Hardware’s broad test suite, it was about 16% faster than the original RTX 4070 at 1440p while remaining roughly 7% behind the RTX 4070 Ti. It also delivered strong ray-tracing, creator, and AI performance with unusually low power consumption.
That verdict needs a 2026 qualification: $599 is the US launch MSRP, not a guaranteed current price. A renewed or partner-board RTX 4070 SUPER can still be a sensible purchase if priced competitively, but newer cards and models with more than 12GB of VRAM may offer better long-term value. The RTX 4070 SUPER is best understood as a high-quality 1440p card—not an uncompromising native-4K or future-proof GPU.

Like the RTX 4070, the SUPER has 12GB of GDDR6X memory on a 192-bit bus. That produces 504GB/s of memory bandwidth. It also has a larger 48MB L2 cache than the standard RTX 4070’s 36MB, which helps the GPU make more effective use of its memory subsystem, but it does not change the 12GB capacity or the width of the memory bus.

Nvidia launched the card on January 17, 2024, at $599 in the United States—the same launch MSRP as the original RTX 4070. Nvidia positioned it primarily for high-settings, high-refresh-rate 1440p gaming, with 4K gaming possible when the game, settings, and upscaling mode are appropriate.
For readers shopping for the card today, a GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER graphics card may mean a Founders Edition, a partner-board model, or renewed inventory. Check the exact model’s dimensions, cooler, warranty, clock settings, and price rather than assuming that every card performs or sounds like the Founders Edition tested in published reviews.
What changed from the original RTX 4070?
The RTX 4070 SUPER is not a revolutionary redesign. It is a more capable version of the same general product: more active CUDA cores, a higher power ceiling, and performance that generally sits between the RTX 4070 and RTX 4070 Ti.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →That makes the launch pricing especially significant. The original RTX 4070 was already a capable 1440p card, but the SUPER offered a meaningful performance increase without raising the $599 launch MSRP. It was therefore a much more convincing purchase than a minor clock-speed refresh would have been.
Nvidia’s launch material claimed that the RTX 4070 SUPER delivered RTX 3090-level or better performance in selected demanding games while using substantially less power. That is a vendor claim for specific titles and conditions, not a replacement for an independent benchmark average. Nvidia also promoted DLSS 3 and claimed up to a 1.5x performance result in selected demanding games. That figure should not be interpreted as a universal 1.5x increase in native game performance.
The Founders Edition keeps the compact, dual-fan design language associated with the RTX 4070 FE. The most obvious visual change is the all-matte-black shroud and casing treatment. It is a refinement of the existing cooler design rather than a radically different physical card.
Gaming performance: a strong 1440p result
Tom’s Hardware tested the Founders Edition at 1080p medium, 1080p ultra, 1440p ultra, and 4K ultra across a broad selection of games. The overall results show the card behaving exactly where Nvidia positioned it: strongest as a high-quality 1440p option, with enough performance for selective 4K play.

1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute| Test grouping | Compared with RTX 4070 | Compared with RTX 4070 Ti |
|---|---|---|
| Overall 1440p | RTX 4070 SUPER was 16% faster | 7% slower |
| Rasterization-only, 1440p | 15% faster | 6% slower |
| 1080p ultra | 14% faster | 6% slower |
| 1080p medium | 9% faster | 5% slower |
At 1440p overall, the RTX 4070 SUPER was 16% ahead of the RTX 4070 and 7% behind the RTX 4070 Ti in Tom’s Hardware’s aggregate results. Restricting the comparison to traditional rasterization reduced the lead over the RTX 4070 to 15%, while the gap to the RTX 4070 Ti was 6%.
The smaller gains at 1080p medium are important. The SUPER was 9% faster than the RTX 4070 and 5% slower than the RTX 4070 Ti in that test grouping. At lower resolutions and settings, the CPU and other platform limitations become more influential, so the GPU’s extra cores cannot always translate into a proportionally larger frame-rate increase.
In practical terms, the card is a good match for a 1440p monitor with demanding visual settings and a high refresh rate. It is also a reasonable choice for 1080p if you want substantial headroom, although pairing this level of GPU with a fast processor becomes more important at that resolution.
4K gaming is possible, but not the default target
The RTX 4070 SUPER can play many games at 4K, but “can run 4K” should not be confused with “delivers maximum native 4K performance in every modern game.” Ultra settings, heavy ray tracing, high-resolution textures, and a 60Hz-or-higher target can push the card hard.
DLSS can make 4K more practical by rendering internally at a lower resolution and reconstructing the image. The result depends on the game and the selected quality mode. For a demanding title, using DLSS is a sensible way to balance image quality and frame rate; it is not evidence that the card has the same native-rendering performance as a more powerful GPU.
Ray tracing and DLSS
Ray tracing materially improves the RTX 4070 SUPER’s position against similarly priced AMD cards. Nvidia’s dedicated ray-tracing hardware and DLSS support can make the difference in games where reflections, global illumination, or path-traced effects are central to the visual presentation.
Results remain workload-sensitive. Tom’s Hardware found that the RTX 4070 SUPER’s overall ray-tracing performance could edge past the Radeon RX 7900 XTX in its test suite, although the result was influenced by individual titles, including Minecraft. That should be treated as a suite-level observation rather than a promise that the Nvidia card wins every ray-traced game.
Alan Wake 2 illustrates the limits clearly. At 1440p with high settings and ray tracing enabled, the RTX 4070 SUPER produced approximately 43 frames per second with quality-mode upscaling in Tom’s Hardware’s test. That is playable for many users, but it is not a native-resolution, high-refresh result. More demanding path-traced games may require lower settings, a more aggressive DLSS mode, or frame generation.
DLSS 3 frame generation can increase the displayed frame rate in supported games, but it creates generated frames between traditionally rendered frames and does not replace the need for adequate base performance. It is best considered a useful feature for compatible titles, not a blanket multiplier that applies to every game or workload.

RTX 4070 SUPER versus AMD alternatives
The comparison with AMD depends heavily on whether the workload uses ray tracing.
In Tom’s Hardware’s overall 1440p gaming suite, the RTX 4070 SUPER was 24% faster than the Radeon RX 7800 XT, although the Nvidia card represented about 20% more launch-period spending in that comparison. In rasterization-only testing, the Nvidia lead narrowed to 8%. That is a more useful figure for buyers who mostly play traditional, non-ray-traced games.
The RTX 4070 SUPER came close to the Radeon RX 7900 XT overall, but the AMD card offered substantially more VRAM. In rasterization-only results, the RTX 4070 SUPER trailed the RX 7900 XT by 12%. AMD’s larger memory capacity can be valuable for high-resolution textures and games that approach or exceed 12GB of usage.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The Nvidia card’s advantages are therefore not limited to average rasterized frame rates. Ray tracing, DLSS, power efficiency, and Nvidia’s software ecosystem strengthen its case. AMD’s counterarguments include rasterization performance in some price comparisons and more generous VRAM capacities. The better choice depends on the games you play, the features you use, and the actual price of each card when you buy.
Creator and AI performance
The RTX 4070 SUPER is also a capable mid-to-high-end creator GPU. Nvidia’s CUDA ecosystem, ray-tracing hardware, and broad application support can matter more than gaming averages in workloads such as 3D rendering, video production, and machine-learning experimentation.
Stable Diffusion
Tom’s Hardware tested Stable Diffusion with Automatic1111 and TensorRT extensions for Nvidia cards. In the tested workload, the RTX 4070 SUPER sat between the RTX 4070 and RTX 4070 Ti.
- At 512×512, it delivered roughly 12% more performance than the RTX 4070 and 11% less than the RTX 4070 Ti.
- At 768×768, it was about 11% faster than the RTX 4070 and 10% slower than the RTX 4070 Ti.
- Against the Radeon RX 7900 XTX, it was 40% faster at 512×512 and 30% faster at 768×768 in that tested configuration.
Those results should not be generalized to every AI workflow. The Radeon’s larger VRAM capacity may become more important when using larger models, higher resolutions, larger batches, or applications that exceed the RTX 4070 SUPER’s 12GB framebuffer. Compatibility, memory requirements, and software acceleration can change the ranking from one AI task to another.

Blender rendering
In Blender Benchmark 3.6.0, Tom’s Hardware reported the RTX 4070 SUPER at 84% faster than the Radeon RX 7900 XTX in the tested GPU-accelerated 3D-rendering workload. The result was attributed in part to Nvidia’s ray-tracing hardware. Because the benchmark version and test configuration affect results, the 84% figure should be read as a result from Blender Benchmark 3.6.0—not a guarantee for every Blender scene or renderer.
Power efficiency, clocks, temperatures, and noise
Efficiency is one of the RTX 4070 SUPER’s strongest qualities. Tom’s Hardware measured average board power of approximately 183W at 1080p medium, 199W at 1080p ultra, 210W at 1440p, and 216W at 4K. The card stayed close to its 220W total graphics power target even under the heaviest test resolution.
In the same testing, the RTX 4070 SUPER used approximately 90W to 100W less than the Radeon RX 7900 XTX at every tested resolution. That can simplify cooling and reduce the heat a system puts into the case, although total system power still depends on the CPU, motherboard, storage, fans, and other components.
The Founders Edition’s advertised boost clock is 2,475MHz, but the card operated above that figure in Tom’s Hardware’s observed averages:
| Test | Average observed clock |
|---|---|
| 1080p medium | Approximately 2,761MHz |
| 1080p ultra | Approximately 2,742MHz |
| 1440p ultra | Approximately 2,718MHz |
| 4K ultra | Approximately 2,679MHz |
These are test-observed operating averages, not guaranteed clocks for every RTX 4070 SUPER. Temperature, power limits, firmware, workload, case airflow, and the partner board’s factory settings can all affect sustained frequency.
Tom’s Hardware measured load noise at 41.3dB(A) with the fan running at a reported 39%. The card was somewhat louder than the lower-power RTX 4070 Founders Edition, which is expected given the SUPER’s higher power target, while retaining a closely related cooler design.
TechSpot recorded a 66°C peak junction temperature, a 78°C hotspot, and a 78°C memory temperature for the Founders Edition after an hour of load in a 21°C room. Its tested ASUS Dual partner card reached a lower 64°C peak junction temperature and 74°C hotspot, but its memory reached 86°C. The comparison demonstrates why Founders Edition measurements should not be applied automatically to every partner card.
The 12GB VRAM limitation
The RTX 4070 SUPER’s main technical weakness is its 12GB framebuffer. That capacity was adequate for the 1440p workloads in the cited reviews, and it remains sufficient for many current games at sensible settings. However, it gives the card less headroom than competitors with 16GB or more.

- 3rd Generation RT Cores: Up to 2x ray tracing performance

The concern is most relevant when combining 4K resolution, ultra-quality textures, ray tracing or path tracing, large texture packs, and future games with higher memory requirements. Creator projects and AI models can also exceed 12GB even when ordinary gaming does not.
It would be inaccurate to say that 12GB is always inadequate. It would be equally misleading to call it fully future-proof. The impact depends on the game, resolution, texture settings, ray-tracing mode, application, and willingness to use upscaling or reduce a demanding setting. If you expect to keep the card for many years or regularly use 4K textures and large creator workloads, a card with more VRAM deserves serious consideration.
Installation and compatibility checklist
The RTX 4070 SUPER requires a suitable PCIe x16 slot, enough clearance for the selected board, and a power supply that can support the entire PC. The exact dimensions and thickness vary among partner cards, so consult the manufacturer’s specification page before buying.
- Check physical clearance. Measure the case’s maximum GPU length and account for front radiators, drive cages, side panels, and the card’s thickness. Do not rely on the Founders Edition’s dimensions when choosing a larger partner model.
- Plan the power connection. The card uses a 16-pin PCIe power connector. Nvidia’s quick-start guidance specifies the supplied PCIe Gen 5 adapter and at least two PCIe 8-pin cables when using that adapter.
- Use the correct cable. A PCIe 5 GPU power cable can reduce adapter clutter, but compatibility must be verified with both the power supply and the specific GPU. Do not use a modular PSU cable from a different PSU brand or series just because the plug appears to fit.
- Seat the connector completely. The 16-pin plug should be fully inserted. Avoid a sharp bend immediately next to the connector; route the cable with enough clearance to prevent sideways force on the plug.
- Match the PSU to the whole system. A PCIe 5 power supply is a convenient option for a new build or a PSU upgrade, but there is no single wattage recommendation that applies to every system. Consider the CPU, drives, fans, overclocking, and the specific partner card, and choose a quality unit with appropriate headroom.
- Install current drivers. Use Nvidia’s official driver package for the operating system and remove or replace an older GPU driver if the system has been unstable after a card swap. Maintenance software cannot substitute for the correct graphics driver or hardware diagnostics.
The best display pairing
The RTX 4070 SUPER’s natural display target is 1440p. A 1440p 165Hz gaming monitor is a sensible category match for users who want to take advantage of the card’s performance without making native 4K the primary requirement. The monitor was not tested as part of the GPU benchmarks, so treat this as a system-matching recommendation rather than a review result.

RTX 4070 SUPER price and value in 2026
The $599 figure belongs to the January 2024 US launch. It should not be presented as the current universal street price. Availability in 2026 may include used, renewed, partner-board, or third-party inventory, each with different warranties and return policies.
A July 24, 2026 price-tracking snapshot showed renewed Amazon listings for some MSI RTX 4070 SUPER variants at approximately $599.97 and $649.99. Contemporaneous user reports mentioned broader Amazon asking prices of roughly $600 to $800. These figures are indicative snapshots, not a verified market-wide price, and listings can change quickly.
At around the original $599 price, the RTX 4070 SUPER remains easy to recommend when you specifically want efficient 1440p performance, Nvidia’s ray tracing and DLSS features, and a mature creator software ecosystem. At a substantially higher price, the 12GB capacity becomes harder to overlook, and the card should be compared with currently available newer-generation products rather than judged only against the 2024 RTX 4070 and RTX 4070 Ti.
Before purchasing, compare:
- the card’s total price after shipping and tax;
- whether it is new, used, or renewed;
- warranty and return coverage;
- VRAM capacity and memory bandwidth of current alternatives;
- ray-tracing and upscaling support you actually use;
- power consumption, case size, and connector requirements.
Who should buy the RTX 4070 SUPER?
It makes sense for:
- Gamers targeting high-settings 1440p with a high-refresh-rate display.
- Users upgrading from a substantially older GPU who want strong rasterization and ray-tracing performance without extreme power draw.
- Builders who value DLSS, frame generation, CUDA support, Blender performance, or Nvidia’s broader application compatibility.
- Buyers who find a new, used, or renewed card at a price that compares favorably with newer products available in their market.
Look elsewhere if:
- You want uncompromised native 4K gaming with heavy ray tracing.
- You routinely use more than 12GB of VRAM for large AI models, professional scenes, high-resolution textures, or long-term workstation work.
- Your priority is maximum rasterization performance per dollar and a competing card offers substantially more VRAM at a similar price.
- The available RTX 4070 SUPER is priced near or above newer cards with better performance, features, or memory capacity.
Verdict
The RTX 4070 SUPER was one of Nvidia’s most successful early-2024 SUPER refreshes. It delivered approximately 15% to 16% more 1440p gaming performance than the RTX 4070 in Tom’s Hardware’s testing, landed close to the RTX 4070 Ti, performed particularly well in ray tracing and Nvidia-accelerated creator workloads, and consumed far less power than the Radeon RX 7900 XTX in the cited tests.
Its weaknesses are just as clear: 12GB of VRAM on a 192-bit bus, limited long-term headroom for demanding 4K and creator workloads, and a current price that may no longer reflect its original value proposition. At its $599 launch MSRP, it was a major improvement over the vanilla RTX 4070. In 2026, it is still a very strong 1440p GPU—but whether it is a smart buy depends on live pricing, condition, warranty, and the newer alternatives available when you shop.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the RTX 4070 SUPER still worth buying?
It can be, especially for high-settings 1440p gaming, ray tracing, DLSS, and CUDA-based creator work. The original $599 US launch MSRP made it an especially strong value, but current prices and newer-generation alternatives must be checked before buying. A renewed or used card priced near newer models may not be the better choice.
Is the RTX 4070 SUPER good for 4K gaming?
It can handle 4K in many games, but it is primarily a 1440p GPU. At 4K, demanding settings, ray tracing, and high-resolution textures may require DLSS, reduced settings, or frame generation. It should not be treated as an uncompromised native-4K ray-tracing card.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIs 12GB of VRAM enough for the RTX 4070 SUPER?
It was adequate for the tested 1440p gaming workloads and remains enough for many games. However, 12GB provides less headroom than 16GB-or-more competitors for 4K textures, path tracing, large creator projects, and some AI workloads. Whether it is sufficient depends on the application and settings.
What power connector does the RTX 4070 SUPER use?
The card uses a 16-pin PCIe power connector. Nvidia’s supplied adapter requires at least two PCIe 8-pin cables. Check the specific partner board and power supply, fully seat the connector, and avoid sharply bending the cable immediately beside the plug.
Does every RTX 4070 SUPER run as cool and quietly as the Founders Edition?
No. Partner cards use different coolers, fan curves, factory settings, and physical designs. Published testing found differences even between the Founders Edition and an ASUS Dual model in junction, hotspot, and memory temperatures, so model-specific reviews are more useful than assuming one card’s results apply to all variants.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: The RTX 4070 SUPER was a major upgrade over the RTX 4070 at the same $599 launch MSRP and remains a highly efficient, feature-rich 1440p GPU. Buy it in 2026 only after checking the live price, warranty, exact board, and newer alternatives; its 12GB VRAM is the main reason not to call it a universally future-proof choice.
