Choose NVIDIA Blackwell when the lowest integration risk, mature CUDA coverage, NVLink scale-up and turnkey DGX operations matter most. Choose AMD Instinct when maximum HBM capacity, high memory bandwidth and an open ROCm software path are more important. B200 systems offer 180 GB of HBM3e and up to 8 TB/s per GPU, while AMD’s MI325X reaches 256 GB of HBM3E and 6 TB/s. That extra AMD memory can reduce model- and tensor-parallel sharding for large or long-context models, but it does not by itself guarantee higher application throughput. The right decision depends on your exact framework and kernel support, model precision, interconnect topology, power envelope, availability and verified total cost of ownership.

The comparison below separates published specifications from workload results. Vendor peak tensor figures are not substitutes for a benchmark using your model, sequence length, batch size and precision.

What are the Blackwell and Instinct options?

NVIDIA Blackwell and AMD Instinct are families of data-center accelerators rather than single cards. Your practical choice is usually between a complete node or platform, its software image and its network fabric—not just the silicon specification.

NVIDIA B200, HGX B200 and DGX B200

NVIDIA documents 180 GB of HBM3e and up to 8 TB/s of memory bandwidth for each B200 GPU. An eight-GPU HGX B200 node therefore provides 1.44 TB of aggregate GPU memory and up to 64 TB/s of aggregate HBM bandwidth. Fifth-generation NVLink supplies 1,800 GB/s of GPU-to-GPU bandwidth, with 14.4 TB/s aggregate across the eight-GPU configuration.

DGX B200 packages eight B200 GPUs into a turnkey system. NVIDIA lists 1,440 GB of total GPU memory, 64 TB/s of HBM3e bandwidth and 14.4 TB/s of aggregate NVLink bandwidth for the system, along with NVIDIA AI Enterprise and Mission Control software. HGX is a platform design that OEMs and integrators can build into their own servers; DGX is NVIDIA’s integrated system and software offering.

GB200 scale-up systems

The DGX GB200 datasheet lists 72 Blackwell GPUs, 13.4 TB of HBM3e, 576 TB/s of memory bandwidth and 1,440 PFLOPS of sparse FP4 tensor performance. The FP4 number is a vendor-specified, sparsity- and precision-specific peak, not a guaranteed result for a production model. GB200 is aimed at rack-scale deployments where the system design, fabric, power delivery and operations are planned as one unit.

AMD Instinct MI300X and MI325X

AMD lists 192 GB of HBM3 and 5.3 TB/s of peak theoretical bandwidth for each MI300X accelerator. MI325X raises the specification to 256 GB of HBM3E and 6 TB/s per accelerator. AMD’s eight-GPU MI325X Platform provides 2 TB of HBM3E and 48 TB/s of aggregate memory bandwidth.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The memory difference is material: 256 GB is about 42 percent more capacity than B200’s 180 GB, while MI300X provides about 7 percent more capacity. Capacity can determine whether weights, activations and a key-value cache fit without another level of sharding, but the platform still has to deliver suitable host memory, interconnects, software kernels and cooling.

How do memory capacity and bandwidth compare?

For memory-bound workloads, MI325X has the largest per-GPU HBM pool in this comparison. B200 has the highest stated per-GPU bandwidth, while MI300X and MI325X remain in the same general class. Treat these as hardware limits; achieved bandwidth depends on access patterns, kernel implementation, concurrency and power state.

Accelerator or system HBM per GPU Stated bandwidth Aggregate configuration What it means operationally
NVIDIA B200 180 GB HBM3e Up to 8 TB/s per GPU Eight-GPU HGX or DGX: 1.44 TB and 64 TB/s High bandwidth with a mature eight-GPU NVLink design
AMD Instinct MI300X 192 GB HBM3 5.3 TB/s peak theoretical per GPU Eight-GPU total not stated in the cited specification Slightly more capacity than B200; verify the host platform’s fabric
AMD Instinct MI325X 256 GB HBM3E 6 TB/s per GPU Eight-GPU platform: 2 TB and 48 TB/s Most capacity per accelerator for large weights and long contexts
NVIDIA DGX GB200 13.4 TB HBM3e across 72 GPUs 576 TB/s across the system 72 Blackwell GPUs; 1,440 PFLOPS sparse FP4 tensor peak Rack-scale design for very large distributed jobs

Do not add per-GPU bandwidth figures and assume a model will see that rate. A transformer may be limited by attention kernels, all-reduce traffic, host-to-device transfers or storage input long before HBM reaches its theoretical maximum. Benchmark both tokens per second and cost per useful token at the target precision.

Why does GPU-to-GPU fabric matter for training?

Distributed training repeatedly exchanges gradients, parameters and activations. A fast, tightly connected scale-up fabric can make eight GPUs behave more like one large memory and compute domain; a slower or poorly mapped topology can leave expensive accelerators waiting on communication.

Blackwell’s NVLink path

HGX and DGX B200 use fifth-generation NVLink. NVIDIA specifies 1,800 GB/s of GPU-to-GPU bandwidth and 14.4 TB/s aggregate for the eight-GPU design. Google Cloud maps B200 to its A4 accelerator-optimized machine family with eight GPUs per instance, 180 GB HBM3e and 8 TB/s per GPU, plus full-mesh NVLink connectivity at 1,800 GB/s. That provides a concrete cloud deployment path, although the cited cloud material does not state current US hourly or committed-use prices.

What to verify on an Instinct platform

The MI300X and MI325X product specifications cited here emphasize HBM capacity and bandwidth but do not provide a directly comparable, system-level GPU-to-GPU bandwidth figure. Ask the OEM or cloud provider for the exact accelerator topology, link bandwidth in each direction, collective-communication results and the mapping from GPUs to CPUs and network adapters. Two systems with the same accelerator count can train very differently if one requires traffic to cross host sockets or a network hop.

Which platform is better for large-model training?

There is no universal winner. B200 is generally the safer choice for large distributed training when your team depends on CUDA kernels, NVLink collectives and a pre-integrated operating model. MI325X can be the better fit when the model is memory-bound and its 256 GB per accelerator allows fewer tensor- or pipeline-parallel shards.

Choose B200 when communication and software coverage dominate

  • Your training stack already uses CUDA-specific kernels, libraries or vendor-optimized implementations.
  • Frequent all-reduce and all-to-all operations make scale-up bandwidth a first-order bottleneck.
  • You want an integrated DGX software and support model rather than assembling an accelerator, server image and validation program yourself.
  • Your production team needs a documented path from one eight-GPU node to larger NVLink- and network-connected clusters.

Choose MI325X when memory footprint dominates

  • Model weights, optimizer states or long-context key-value caches are forcing excessive sharding on lower-capacity GPUs.
  • Keeping a larger portion of a model on each accelerator reduces pipeline bubbles or cross-node communication.
  • Your engineering team can validate ROCm, PyTorch, compiler and quantization combinations for the exact model.
  • An open software strategy and the ability to work across multiple OEM or cloud sources matter more than a turnkey vendor stack.

How to test training rather than guess

  1. Freeze the model revision, dataset slice, sequence length, global batch size, precision and optimizer.
  2. Run a single-GPU test to establish tokens per second, peak HBM use and checkpoint time.
  3. Repeat on one eight-GPU node and record scaling efficiency, all-reduce time, host-to-device transfer time and failure recovery.
  4. Scale to the intended number of nodes, measuring network utilization and the fraction of step time spent in communication.
  5. Price the complete run, including reserved capacity, storage, software subscriptions, engineering time and re-runs caused by instability.

Which is better for inference and long context?

MI325X’s 256 GB of HBM3E is particularly attractive for long-context inference and models whose weights plus key-value cache approach the capacity of a B200. A model that fits on fewer accelerators may need fewer tensor-parallel exchanges, which can improve latency and simplify scheduling. That advantage disappears if the required inference engine lacks optimized ROCm kernels or if the workload is compute-bound rather than memory-bound.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

B200 is compelling for high-throughput serving when your inference stack is already optimized for CUDA and when NVLink lets replicas share work efficiently. Measure both throughput and tail latency: a configuration that wins average tokens per second may still miss a service-level objective at the 95th or 99th percentile.

Use the target precision, not a marketing peak

Build an inference matrix for the precisions you will actually serve—such as FP16, BF16, FP8 or a validated quantized format. Vendor sparse FP4 tensor figures describe a specific operating mode and sparsity assumption; they should not be presented as expected application throughput. Record prompt length, generated-token length, batch or concurrency level, KV-cache policy and whether requests are mixed or uniform.

How do CUDA and ROCm differ in practice?

NVIDIA systems are built around CUDA and NVIDIA’s enterprise AI software stack. AMD’s ROCm documentation officially supports MI300X and MI325X on Linux, but compatibility depends on the ROCm release, framework version, compiler, kernel and quantization path you select.

CUDA’s integration advantage

CUDA has broad coverage across deep-learning frameworks, communication libraries, profilers and third-party kernels. DGX B200 adds NVIDIA AI Enterprise and Mission Control to the hardware, which can reduce the amount of cluster integration your operations team must own. This does not remove the need to pin versions and test upgrades; it lowers the number of components you have to assemble initially.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

ROCm’s portability requirements

ROCm can support the same high-level frameworks, but a CUDA application is not automatically portable. Some projects run through a framework abstraction, while others depend on CUDA-only extensions, custom kernels, NVIDIA-specific graph optimizations or a particular quantization library. Audit every dependency, rebuild extensions for the target ROCm release and test checkpoint loading, distributed collectives, compilation and inference serving before committing capacity.

A software qualification checklist

  • Pin the Linux distribution, driver, CUDA or ROCm release, framework version and compiler.
  • List every custom or third-party kernel and identify whether an equivalent implementation exists for the target accelerator.
  • Test mixed precision, attention, normalization, embedding and communication kernels separately; end-to-end averages can hide one failing operation.
  • Validate distributed launch, checkpoint restart, profiling and health monitoring on the exact OEM image.
  • Define an upgrade policy so a new framework or driver cannot silently change numerical results or performance.

What complete deployment choices are available?

Choose the system boundary that matches your operations capability. Buying an accelerator module is not equivalent to buying a validated node, and buying a node is not equivalent to buying a rack-scale cluster.

Deployment choice Strength Questions to resolve

Google Cloud A4 B200 instance Cloud access to eight B200 GPUs with full-mesh NVLink Current regional availability, quota, egress, storage, commitment terms and hourly price

What power, cooling and network checks are required?

High-end accelerators are facility projects as much as procurement projects. The available data provides no like-for-like thermal design power or rack energy figures for these platforms, so obtain the current OEM electrical and thermal specifications instead of estimating from GPU count.

Facility checks

  • Confirm rack power, voltage, redundancy, breaker capacity and the system’s peak as well as sustained draw.
  • Confirm whether air cooling is sufficient or whether direct liquid cooling, rear-door heat exchange or another solution is required.
  • Reserve physical space for service clearances, cable bend radius and the network equipment that the cluster requires.
  • Measure inlet temperature and airflow under a sustained training load, not only during a short acceptance test.

Network checks

  • Map each GPU to its nearest network interface and CPU NUMA domain.
  • Specify the required fabric speed, oversubscription, congestion control and collective-communication behavior.
  • Test node failure, link failure and job restart so a single hardware fault does not strand a large reservation.

How should you calculate total cost of ownership?

Current purchase and cloud prices are not stated in the cited specifications, and availability changes quickly by region, OEM and commitment term. Request date-stamped quotes for equivalent configurations rather than comparing an accelerator module with a complete supported system.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Build the model around useful output:

  • Capital cost: accelerators, host CPUs, memory, local storage, network adapters, switches, racks and facility upgrades.
  • Software and support: enterprise subscriptions, OEM support, cloud support, monitoring and managed services.
  • Operating cost: electricity, cooling, floor space, backup capacity and technician time.
  • Engineering cost: porting CUDA extensions to ROCm, validating kernels, maintaining images and retraining staff.
  • Utilization risk: idle capacity, fragmentation caused by model sizes and the cost of reserving enough GPUs for burst demand.
  • Reliability cost: replacement lead time, checkpoint recovery, failed jobs and the operational impact of firmware or driver changes.

Use a common workload unit such as dollars per million generated tokens, dollars per completed training step or dollars per successful fine-tune. Include the measured throughput at your service-level objective, not a vendor peak.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

How can you make the decision step by step?

  1. Describe the workload. Record model parameters, weight format, optimizer, context length, batch or concurrency, target precision and whether the job is training, fine-tuning or inference.
  2. Calculate the memory budget. Include weights, gradients, optimizer states, activations, KV cache, runtime workspace and a safety margin. Do not treat advertised HBM as fully available to the model.
  3. Identify software blockers. Inventory CUDA-only extensions, custom kernels, serving engines and quantization libraries; then verify their exact ROCm or CUDA support.
  4. Select the smallest useful topology. Test one GPU, one eight-GPU node and the intended multi-node shape. More accelerators are not automatically faster if communication dominates.
  5. Run an acceptance benchmark. Use production-like data and collect throughput, latency percentiles, memory use, scaling efficiency, power, failures and restart time.
  6. Validate the facility. Approve power, cooling, rack, network and service procedures before issuing a purchase order.
  7. Obtain comparable commercial terms. Ask each supplier for the same GPU count, host configuration, support term, software entitlements, delivery window and pricing basis.
  8. Choose a migration and exit plan. Keep checkpoints in portable formats where practical, document pinned environments and define how you would move a workload if supply, pricing or software support changes.

What are the most common mistakes?

Comparing peak tensor numbers as if they were application results

Peak FP4, FP8 or sparse figures describe narrow hardware conditions. A real model may use a different precision, have irregular sparsity or spend most of its time in memory and communication operations. Require an end-to-end benchmark with your serving or training software.

Assuming more HBM solves every bottleneck

Additional capacity can reduce sharding, but it does not fix a slow kernel, an underpowered host, an imbalanced NUMA layout or a congested network. Profile the workload before assigning a memory-based winner.

Treating framework compatibility as binary

A model may load successfully and still lose performance because one attention, normalization or quantization kernel falls back to an unoptimized implementation. Test the complete graph and monitor fallback operations.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Ignoring topology in a cloud quote

Ask whether the promised GPUs share a full-mesh or equivalent scale-up fabric, how they map to network adapters and whether placement can span hosts. Quota for eight accelerators is not proof of an efficient eight-GPU node.

Using stale availability or price assumptions

Blackwell and Instinct supply, cloud regions, ROCm releases, CUDA releases and OEM configurations change rapidly. Put an expiration date on every quote and repeat technical validation when the delivered configuration differs from the tested one.

What is the practical verdict?

For most organizations standardizing a large CUDA estate, B200 in HGX or DGX form is the lower-risk infrastructure choice because its NVLink scale-up design and enterprise software path are tightly integrated. For memory-constrained models, long-context inference and teams prepared to validate ROCm, MI325X offers a compelling capacity advantage, while MI300X remains a high-memory alternative with 192 GB per accelerator. Make the final call only after a workload benchmark and a date-stamped review of topology, facility requirements, support and total cost.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can an existing CUDA application run directly on MI300X or MI325X?

Not necessarily. High-level PyTorch or similar code may be portable, but CUDA extensions, custom kernels and vendor-specific libraries generally need ROCm-compatible implementations and validation. Plan a porting test rather than assuming source-level compatibility.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does more HBM always reduce inference latency?

No. More HBM can prevent weight or KV-cache sharding, but latency may still be limited by compute kernels, scheduling, host transfers or inter-GPU communication. Measure first-token latency, decode latency and tail percentiles at the intended concurrency.

Is an eight-GPU server automatically faster than a single accelerator?

Only when the workload scales efficiently across the server. Synchronization, pipeline bubbles and data movement can erase the benefit for small batches or poorly optimized kernels, so test the smallest deployment that meets capacity and latency goals.

How often should an accelerator software environment be requalified?

Requalify whenever you change the driver, CUDA or ROCm release, framework, compiler, kernel library, firmware or quantization path. A routine upgrade can alter numerical behavior, kernel selection or collective performance even when the model code is unchanged.

Will cloud B200 performance match an on-premises DGX or HGX node?

It can be similar when the cloud instance exposes the same GPU count, NVLink topology and software versions, but placement, virtualization, storage and network contention can differ. Compare measurements from the actual cloud region and instance type with the on-premises acceptance test.
