Short answer: Choose B300 for memory-heavy reasoning inference, long-context models, high concurrency and FP4 workloads; choose B200 for a more balanced Blackwell platform with much stronger FP64/HPC capability; choose H200 when Hopper software, drivers and operating procedures are already a major investment. B300 offers the largest published HBM configuration and the same fifth-generation NVLink class as B200, but it also brings demanding power and cooling requirements.
The comparison is not a simple performance ranking. The right accelerator depends on model size, precision, interconnect traffic, facility capacity and how much infrastructure change your team can absorb. The figures below are NVIDIA specifications for named configurations, not a promise of application throughput.
Quick verdict: match the GPU to the bottleneck
| Best fit | Recommended GPU | Why | Main qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reasoning inference, long context and high concurrency | B300 | Largest published HBM capacity, FP4 capability, fifth-generation NVLink and twice the listed attention performance of B200 in NVIDIA’s HGX table | Power, cooling and rack integration are substantial; published B300 memory differs by document |
| Mixed training, inference and HPC | B200 | Blackwell platform, fifth-generation NVLink, 180 GB HBM3e per GPU and far higher listed FP64 performance than B300 | Less memory than B300, so model fit and concurrency may require more GPUs |
| Existing Hopper cluster or software stack | H200 | 141 GB HBM3e, 4.80 TB/s bandwidth and a lower-disruption HBM3e upgrade path | Fourth-generation NVLink and lower scale-up bandwidth than either Blackwell option |
| Greenfield enterprise appliance | DGX B300 or an HGX-based system | Integrated eight-GPU designs package the interconnect, power delivery and management expected for large models | System-level power and facility work must be approved before purchase |
For a new platform whose limiting resource is model memory or attention throughput, B300 is the strongest starting point. If double-precision computing is a meaningful part of the workload, B200’s published FP64 figures change the decision. H200 is still sensible when continuity, existing validation and operational familiarity outweigh the benefits of moving to Blackwell.

The B300 memory entries are not a mistake to silently average. NVIDIA’s HGX component table lists 288 GB per GPU, while the Blackwell Ultra datasheet lists 270 GB and 7.7 TB/s. Those are document-specific configurations. Confirm the exact SXM module, system design and usable-memory specification in the quotation you receive.
What the memory numbers mean for real models
HBM capacity is often the first hard limit in large-model inference. The weights, key-value cache, temporary activations, runtime buffers and communication workspace all compete for the same device memory. A model that technically fits its weights can still fail at the context length or batch size you need because the key-value cache grows with active tokens.
B300: the largest memory envelope
NVIDIA’s HGX table gives B300 288 GB of HBM3e per GPU and 2.30 TB across eight GPUs. Its Blackwell Ultra datasheet describes a 270 GB configuration with 7.7 TB/s of bandwidth. Either figure places B300 above B200 and H200 for per-GPU capacity in the cited configurations. That extra headroom can reduce tensor parallelism, leave more room for a long context or permit more simultaneous requests before you add another node.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not treat the 2.30 TB figure as a promise that every DGX B300 exposes exactly that amount to applications. NVIDIA’s DGX B300 documentation describes an eight-GPU enterprise system with 2.1 TB total GPU memory. The difference reflects the published system and component configurations. For capacity planning, use the memory value and usable-memory guidance for the exact bill of materials, then reserve space for the framework and operating services.
B200: enough capacity for many deployments, with a different balance
B200 is listed with 180 GB HBM3e per GPU and up to 8 TB/s of memory bandwidth. An eight-GPU HGX configuration is listed at 1.44 TB. That is a substantial pool for large inference and training jobs, but it gives less margin for very long context, large batches or replicas that cannot be sharded efficiently. B200’s advantage appears when the workload also needs strong FP64 or when a Blackwell software and interconnect upgrade matters more than the last increment of HBM.
H200: a meaningful Hopper memory upgrade
H200 provides 141 GB of HBM3e per GPU, 4.80 TB/s of bandwidth and 1.1 TB in an eight-GPU HGX node. It is therefore not a small-memory accelerator; it is a large-memory Hopper option. The practical question is whether 141 GB is enough for the model and concurrency target without adding nodes. If it is, keeping the Hopper generation can avoid a substantial validation and operations project.
A simple capacity-planning method
- Measure the complete resident footprint. Include weights at the precision you will serve, the key-value cache at your maximum context, activations, framework workspace and communication buffers.
- Calculate the per-GPU requirement. Divide the footprint by the planned tensor- or pipeline-parallel layout, but leave headroom for fragmentation and runtime allocations.
- Check the worst case, not the average request. High-concurrency inference can exhaust memory even when a single request fits comfortably.
- Validate with the actual serving stack. Quantization format, fused attention kernels and parallelism strategy affect memory use; a paper calculation is only a screening step.
Precision and compute: FP4 is not the whole story
Low-precision inference and reasoning
B300 and B200 are designed for Blackwell-era low-precision AI. NVIDIA’s HGX table lists 144 PFLOPS of sparse FP4 performance for each. B300 is also listed with twice B200’s attention performance. These are peak vendor specifications under the stated sparsity and precision assumptions. They are useful for understanding architectural direction, not for predicting the tokens per second of your model.
FP4 can reduce memory traffic and increase arithmetic density when the model, quantization method and kernels support it without unacceptable accuracy loss. A reasoning model may spend a large share of its time in attention and decoding rather than dense matrix multiplication, so B300’s listed attention advantage can matter even when two GPUs share the same headline sparse FP4 number. Benchmark the exact model, context distribution, batch size and quality target before committing to a fleet.

FP16 and BF16 workflows
Many training and inference stacks still use FP16 or BF16 for selected layers, accumulation or compatibility. The comparison material does not provide application throughput for those modes, so it would be misleading to rank the products by an invented number. Instead, verify that your framework, kernels and distributed-training configuration support the precision mix you intend to run, then measure step time, tokens per second and memory use on representative jobs.
FP64 and HPC
B200 is the clear specification-based choice for workloads where double precision is material. NVIDIA’s HGX table lists 296 TFLOPS of FP64/FP64 Tensor Core performance for B200 versus 10 TFLOPS for B300. That is a major difference for scientific simulation, numerical linear algebra and mixed AI/HPC environments. It does not mean B200 will be faster for every AI model: model architecture, sparsity, communication and software still determine observed performance.
H200 can remain attractive for HPC teams that have tuned Hopper kernels and do not need Blackwell’s low-precision or interconnect features. The supplied comparison does not state an H200 FP64 figure, so select it on measured application results rather than assuming parity with either Blackwell part.
Interconnect and scale-up behavior
Large models are distributed across GPUs, making the link between accelerators almost as important as the compute engines. B300 and B200 use fifth-generation NVLink with 1.8 TB/s of GPU-to-GPU bandwidth and 14.4 TB/s of aggregate bandwidth in the eight-GPU HGX reference. H200 uses fourth-generation NVLink at 900 GB/s per GPU-to-GPU link and 7.2 TB/s aggregate in the comparable eight-GPU platform.
| Interconnect metric | B300 | B200 | H200 |
|---|---|---|---|
| NVLink generation | Fifth | Fifth | Fourth |
| GPU-to-GPU bandwidth | 1.8 TB/s | 1.8 TB/s | 900 GB/s |
| Eight-GPU aggregate HGX bandwidth | 14.4 TB/s | 14.4 TB/s | 7.2 TB/s |
Higher link bandwidth helps tensor-parallel layers exchange activations and partial results with less communication pressure. It is most valuable when the model is split across many GPUs, when sequence lengths are long or when synchronization is frequent. It does not automatically double end-to-end performance: PCIe or network links, software scheduling, kernel efficiency and the model’s communication pattern can become the next bottleneck.
For a new cluster, compare the complete topology rather than the GPU label. Confirm how many NVLink links are exposed, how the eight GPUs are arranged, what connects nodes, and whether your parallelism strategy keeps traffic inside the high-bandwidth fabric.
Power, cooling and rack integration
Facility constraints can eliminate an otherwise attractive GPU before performance testing begins. NVIDIA’s Blackwell Ultra datasheet lists B300 with a configurable TDP up to 1,100 W per GPU. NVIDIA’s DGX best-practices documentation estimates approximately 14.5–15 kW of typical DGX B300 system power and about 19–19.7 kW peak, depending on configuration.

Cooling choices
DGX B300 guidance includes air-cooled and rear-door heat-exchanger configurations. An air-cooled rack needs enough supply airflow, an acceptable inlet temperature and a return-air path that does not recirculate exhaust. A rear-door heat exchanger moves a large part of the heat into a facility water loop, but it adds plumbing, leak detection, commissioning and maintenance requirements.
Questions to answer before ordering
- Can the target rack deliver the required continuous and peak electrical load at the site’s voltage?
- Does the room support the airflow or liquid-heat-rejection method specified for the system?
- What happens during a cooling or power fault, and is the shutdown sequence tested?
- Is there enough rack space for the system, network equipment, cable bend radius and service clearance?
- Will adding a second node exceed the row, room or UPS limit even if one node fits?
B200 and H200 system power depends on the specific server or HGX implementation, and the cited material does not provide a comparable system-wide number. Obtain the vendor’s electrical and thermal design data for the exact chassis rather than inferring it from a GPU-only figure.
Software and operational continuity
H200 has a practical advantage when your organization already runs Hopper. Existing drivers, monitoring, job schedulers, container images, kernel workarounds, runbooks and performance baselines can shorten deployment. That continuity is especially valuable for a production service with strict change-control requirements. It does not make H200 universally faster; it lowers migration risk.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesB200 and B300 move the platform to Blackwell. A greenfield deployment can standardize on that generation, but an existing cluster should be tested in a separate environment. Validate driver and framework support, collective-communication behavior, checkpoint compatibility, quantization kernels, observability and failure recovery. Keep a rollback path until representative training and inference jobs meet both performance and quality targets.
Operational continuity also includes people and process. A team familiar with Hopper may need new power and thermal procedures for a B300 installation, while a team building its first accelerator cluster may value an integrated DGX operating model more than a modular server assembled from separate components.
Choosing by workload
Large reasoning-model inference
Start with B300 when model weights, long context or concurrent sessions push memory close to the limit. Its larger published HBM configurations and the listed attention advantage target the parts of decoding that often dominate reasoning workloads. Use B200 when the model fits comfortably in 180 GB per GPU and the service benefits from Blackwell without the highest memory configuration. Use H200 when the model fits in 141 GB and preserving a Hopper fleet materially reduces deployment risk.
General-purpose LLM inference
For conventional chat or completion serving, compare cost per useful token, quality at the selected quantization, batch-size efficiency and node utilization. B300’s extra memory may let you run fewer GPUs per replica; B200 may provide a better balance when models are smaller or when FP64-capable infrastructure is shared with other teams. H200 is a reasonable extension of a working Hopper service, particularly when the existing cluster has spare capacity and established tooling.
Training and fine-tuning
Training favors whichever configuration keeps the model, optimizer states, activations and communication pattern efficient. B300’s memory and fifth-generation NVLink can reduce pressure for very large jobs, while B200 offers a balanced Blackwell option. H200 can be preferable when your training code, checkpoints and cluster scheduler are already tuned for Hopper. Measure scaling efficiency across the number of GPUs you will actually purchase; single-GPU results do not reveal communication losses.

Scientific and engineering HPC
Choose B200 first for mixed AI/HPC environments where FP64 is a substantial requirement, because its listed 296 TFLOPS of FP64/FP64 Tensor Core performance is far above B300’s listed 10 TFLOPS. If the workload is primarily FP32, FP16 or BF16 and memory capacity is the constraint, the answer may change. H200 remains a continuity candidate for established Hopper applications, but the supplied specifications do not establish an H200 FP64 comparison.
Multi-tenant services
Capacity and isolation matter as much as peak arithmetic. B300’s larger HBM pool can host larger models or more concurrent replicas per node, while B200 and H200 may deliver better utilization when tenants are sized to their available memory. Test admission control, memory fragmentation, model loading time and failure recovery under realistic tenant churn.
System form factors and procurement
These are enterprise SXM accelerators and integrated data-center platforms, not ordinary retail graphics cards. Procurement normally involves an HGX-based server, a DGX appliance or another validated system that supplies the required power, cooling, NVLink fabric and management software.
DGX B300
NVIDIA documents DGX B300 as an eight-GPU enterprise system with 2.1 TB total GPU memory and states that it is available now. It is positioned for generative AI and reasoning workloads. The integrated design can simplify qualification, but it also fixes important system-level choices and carries the facility requirements described above.
HGX B200 and B300 servers
An HGX system gives an OEM or system integrator more flexibility around CPU, storage, networking and chassis design. Ask for the exact GPU memory configuration, NVLink topology, firmware support, rack power profile, service process and validated software matrix. Do not assume that two servers carrying the same GPU name expose identical usable memory or network performance.
H200-capable servers
H200 systems can be the least disruptive route for an existing Hopper environment. Confirm that the server’s firmware, cooling and power delivery support the H200 module and that your current images and monitoring tools are certified for the installed driver combination.
The official material cited here does not publish purchase prices, lead times or a comparable total-cost figure. Obtain current quotations and include electricity, cooling, rack space, network fabric, support, spares and staff time in the business case. A lower accelerator price can be erased by facility upgrades or by buying extra GPUs to compensate for insufficient memory.
A practical selection procedure
- Describe the service. Record model family, parameter count, precision, context length, target latency, requests per second and concurrency.
- Build a memory budget. Include weights, cache, activations and runtime overhead at the planned parallelism.
- Classify numerical needs. Mark whether FP4, FP8, FP16/BF16 or FP64 is required, optional or prohibited by quality or scientific-accuracy constraints.
- Map communication. Identify tensor, pipeline and data-parallel traffic, then determine whether it stays within one eight-GPU NVLink domain or crosses the network.
- Screen the facility. Check continuous and peak power, cooling method, rack space and service clearances before requesting final bids.
- Choose continuity or migration. Retain H200 when Hopper compatibility has measurable value; select B200 or B300 when Blackwell capabilities solve a documented bottleneck.
- Benchmark the finalists. Use production models and representative prompts. Record quality, latency, throughput, memory headroom, scaling efficiency and power.
- Price the whole system. Compare validated nodes, networking, support, energy and facility work—not just the accelerator module.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Combining incompatible B300 figures. Keep 288 GB from the HGX table separate from 270 GB in the Blackwell Ultra datasheet, and distinguish both from the 2.1 TB DGX B300 system figure.
- Reading sparse PF4 as application throughput. The 144-PFLOPS values are vendor peak specifications with sparsity assumptions. Benchmark the actual model and serving stack.
- Ignoring attention behavior. Equal headline FP4 numbers do not imply equal decoding performance; NVIDIA lists B300 at twice B200’s attention performance in its HGX comparison.
- Buying on GPU count alone. A node with more GPUs but less usable memory per GPU may fail the target context or batch size.
- Underestimating the facility. A DGX B300 can draw roughly 14.5–15 kW typically and up to about 19–19.7 kW at peak, depending on configuration.
- Assuming software portability. Revalidate drivers, kernels, collectives, containers and monitoring when moving from Hopper to Blackwell.
- Comparing a module with a system. An SXM GPU specification excludes host, network and cooling costs; compare complete validated platforms.
- Using average demand for sizing. Long-context and high-concurrency bursts determine memory, power and thermal headroom.
Frequently asked questions
