Five companies are applying NVIDIA AI and accelerated computing to different clean-energy and electricity-system challenges: grid connections, nuclear information workflows, battery storage, advanced fission, and fusion research. The examples are not five operating clean-power plants. Some are software or infrastructure projects, while others are development programs with future targets. NVIDIA’s September 21, 2026 roundup describes the work and reports the companies’ claims; it is not an independent assessment of performance, safety, emissions, or commercial readiness.

How are these companies using NVIDIA AI for clean energy?

They are using AI and accelerated computing to address bottlenecks around electricity systems, rather than relying on one common technology. ThinkLabs AI focuses on evaluating grid interconnection applications. Atomic Canyon organizes nuclear-industry information. Redwood Materials combines repurposed electric-vehicle batteries with power electronics and controls. TerraPower is developing a digital twin for its Natrium reactor project, while Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS) uses simulation tools in fusion research.

That distinction matters: AI may help plan, manage, or develop energy infrastructure, but its use does not by itself demonstrate that a project has delivered more clean electricity or reduced emissions. The five examples also differ in maturity and in the evidence NVIDIA reports. The grid-application timing is an operational result attributed to NVIDIA; descriptions of the other projects are mainly platform, design, or future-plan claims.

What does each company do?

ThinkLabs AI: model grid connections and uncertainty

ThinkLabs AI curates digital twins and agents using NVIDIA CUDA. A digital twin is a software representation of a physical system; in this case, the stated purpose is to help utilities model grid variability and assess clean-energy connections. The practical problem is that a proposed connection has to be evaluated against a grid whose conditions can vary, so a utility needs a way to consider more than a static snapshot.

NVIDIA says Southern California Edison used ThinkLabs software to reduce evaluation time for each grid interconnection application from 30–45 days to two minutes. That is the strongest numerical operating result in NVIDIA’s roundup, but the article does not provide the methodology, define the workload, or independently validate the baseline or the broader operational effect. It should be read as NVIDIA’s report about a particular utility use, not a promised processing time for other utilities or applications.

ThinkLabs founder and CEO Josh Wong describes the goal as understanding the grid “not statically, but as a probability” so utility actions can be risk informed. In this framing, the value of AI is supporting decisions under variable conditions; it does not remove the need for utility review or establish that every proposed project can connect.

Atomic Canyon: make nuclear-industry information usable

Atomic Canyon’s Neutron is described as an AI workbench for nuclear professionals. It brings together information such as operating procedures, regulatory guidance, experience, licensing records, design calculations, and other structured and unstructured data in a knowledge layer. The intended use is to help nuclear workers navigate information that is distributed across different types of records.

Its NIVA platform, expanded as Nuclear Industry Virtual Assistant, is described as a unified AI capability for the national nuclear fleet. Atomic Canyon built it with the Institute of Nuclear Power Operations, the Electric Power Research Institute, and the Nuclear Energy Institute. These descriptions concern knowledge management and workforce information workflows; they do not establish that AI makes operational decisions for a reactor or replaces required expert judgment.

Atomic Canyon founder and CEO Trey Lauderdale argues that established nuclear technology must be reinvigorated by AI to scale. NVIDIA’s article says nuclear power supplies 20% of the nation’s electricity, but does not identify an underlying statistical source for that figure. Treat it as a statement in NVIDIA’s article, rather than a separately documented statistic here.

Redwood Materials: use EV batteries for responsive storage

Redwood Materials describes an onsite energy-storage system that combines repurposed electric-vehicle batteries, in-house power electronics, and software controls. The system is intended to provide responsive power for AI factories and the wider grid. NVIDIA says an AI layer runs on its Blackwell platform, and Redwood CTO Colin Campbell says the controls can respond to the novel fluctuations of AI training.

The underlying idea is to use batteries as a controllable energy resource rather than treating each battery only as a vehicle component. Redwood says its architecture can reduce the number of transformers and inverters and can work with repurposed or new EV batteries. NVIDIA’s article does not quantify cost, emissions, capacity, or the scale of any reduction, so those design claims should not be translated into specific savings or assumed outcomes.

TerraPower: build a digital twin for the Natrium project

TerraPower is connecting an NVIDIA Omniverse-powered digital-twin platform to work intended to accelerate siting and delivery of future Natrium plants. A digital twin can support work on a plant design in a virtual environment; NVIDIA’s description presents this as part of development and planning, not as evidence that a Natrium plant is already operating.

NVIDIA describes Natrium as a sodium-cooled reactor that operates at lower pressure than water-cooled reactors. It also says the design does not require offsite water or electricity to stay stable during an emergency. These are descriptions of the project and its design in NVIDIA’s roundup, not independent regulatory findings or conclusions about safety. TerraPower president and CEO Chris Levesque says the company’s founders recognized emissions avoidance as part of the energy solution.

Commonwealth Fusion Systems: simulate SPARC and plan for ARC

CFS uses NVIDIA Omniverse libraries and OpenUSD to support simulation and experimentation for SPARC, its tokamak demonstration machine. NVIDIA describes CFS’s use of high-temperature superconductors to produce stronger magnetic fields. The software and simulation work is part of fusion research and development, not a report that SPARC is supplying electricity to the grid.

NVIDIA’s September 2026 article says SPARC’s magnet-driven design is 40 times smaller than a comparison design, without specifying the comparison basis. It also reports that the planned ARC plant is more than 10 times smaller, again without stating the basis for that comparison. These are NVIDIA-reported design comparisons, not independently validated measures of footprint, output, economics, or performance.

The company’s first planned ARC power plant is intended to connect to the grid in the 2030s. That is a future company plan, not a current generation date or guarantee. NVIDIA presents fusion as a potential addition to the clean-energy mix in that decade. CFS cofounder and chief science officer Brandon Sorbom describes fusion as passively safe because it shuts itself down; that is a company statement, not an independent safety analysis.

How do the five projects compare?

The clearest way to compare them is by the bottleneck they address and the kind of evidence NVIDIA gives. An operational software-use claim, a platform description, a design description, and a future deployment plan are not interchangeable measures of clean-energy impact.

Company Energy-system challenge Work described Evidence and maturity in NVIDIA’s account
ThinkLabs AI Grid interconnection and variability Digital twins and agents to support utility modeling and application evaluation NVIDIA reports a Southern California Edison timing result: 30–45 days to two minutes for each application evaluation. Methodology and independent validation are not provided.
Atomic Canyon Nuclear-industry information workflows Neutron knowledge layer and NIVA AI capability Platform and collaboration descriptions; no quantified operational outcome is stated.

What can these examples show—and what can’t they prove?

Together, the projects illustrate several points where computing could contribute to a cleaner or more flexible electricity system: assessing connections, finding information in a complex industry, controlling storage, planning a reactor, and running fusion simulations. They do not show that all five companies are generating clean electricity, nor do they provide a common performance measure that would rank them.

The evidence is also uneven. NVIDIA supplies a reported timing figure for ThinkLabs and Southern California Edison, but does not give enough detail to generalize that result. For Redwood, TerraPower, and CFS, the roundup describes systems, designs, or plans rather than independently measured energy output or emissions impact. For Atomic Canyon, it explains the information platform and collaborators without giving a quantified result. NVIDIA’s article is a corporate roundup, and its project and performance claims should be attributed accordingly.

Numbers in the article need similar care. In addition to the ThinkLabs timing, NVIDIA reports that nuclear power supplies 20% of the nation’s electricity, but cites no underlying statistic there. Its SPARC and ARC size comparisons—40 times smaller and more than 10 times smaller—do not specify a comparison basis. None of these numbers establishes project economics, lifecycle emissions, or the amount of new clean power delivered.

How do the five fit into NVIDIA’s wider energy work?

The five companies are part of a broader set of energy-related efforts described by NVIDIA, not a complete list of its energy work. NVIDIA’s broader energy page identifies grid interconnection planning and distribution management as AI use cases. A separate NVIDIA article describes AI for solar-site layout and equipment monitoring, as well as Siemens Gamesa’s work on wind-farm simulation.

NVIDIA also describes a March 2026 collaboration with Emerald AI involving AES, Constellation, Invenergy, NextEra Energy, Nscale Energy & Power, and Vistra to develop flexible AI factories that can support grid services. That is a separate initiative, not one of the five company examples above. NVIDIA’s separate case study reports a demonstration using a 96-GPU Blackwell Ultra cluster, with results including demand reductions of up to 40% in under a minute and support for requests lasting up to 10 hours. Those are vendor-reported demonstration results and should not be attributed to ThinkLabs, Atomic Canyon, Redwood Materials, TerraPower, or CFS.

The useful takeaway is not that AI has already solved clean energy’s largest challenges. It is that these examples target different constraints, from grid assessment to long-horizon generation development—and the claims must be judged according to what kind of evidence each one actually provides.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does NVIDIA own the five companies in this roundup?

The roundup describes work by separate companies using NVIDIA computing platforms or software. It does not say NVIDIA owns them.

Does AI itself make electricity cleaner?

Not automatically. AI can support planning, operations, storage controls, or research, but whether those uses produce cleaner power depends on the energy project and its real-world results.

What does a tokamak do in fusion research?

A tokamak is a device that uses magnetic fields to confine hot plasma. CFS’s SPARC is described as a tokamak demonstration machine, while its ARC concept is a separate future power-plant plan.

Are all the projects already being used by utilities or power plants?

No. The examples include a reported utility software use, information platforms, a storage system description, reactor-development work, and fusion research with a future plant target. They should not be treated as having the same deployment status.
