No—you normally do not need to start a new game after a No Man’s Sky update. Install the update, launch the game, and load your established save. Your base, inventory, discoveries, upgrades, and character progression are intended to continue through ordinary updates and patches.
Starting over is an optional choice for a clean playthrough, a separate progression path, or an expedition flow that specifically offers a fresh start. Expeditions are the main source of confusion: Hello Games supports entering an expedition from an existing save, while some expedition menus also let you begin with a new game. Those are two ways to enter the mode, not a requirement to erase or abandon your regular save.
Do I need to start over after a No Man’s Sky update?
No. A normal update changes the installed game, not the basic validity of your existing save. The default path is to update, choose your established save, and continue playing with the progress you already earned.
This applies to routine patches as well as larger content updates in the normal case. An update can add missions, systems, settings, locations, creatures, or other mechanics while leaving existing games usable. The fact that the title screen shows a new version, new expedition, or changed feature list does not mean your old character has become incompatible.

There is one important qualification: an individual update can introduce a special mode or a migration rule. If the update notes explicitly describe a required conversion, a mode-specific save, or a limitation on older versions, follow those notes. That is an exception tied to that release, not the general behavior of No Man’s Sky updates.
What happens to an existing save when the game updates?
The installed game files are replaced or expanded by the platform’s update process; your save data remains a separate set of player data. When the update is complete, the game reads that data and presents the established save as a continuation option.

A new save does none of that automatically. It starts a separate progression path, so you must earn equipment, unlock systems, and build up again. That reset can be desirable, but it is not something the update imposes by default.
Will my old save work after the latest update?
Existing saves are intended to remain usable after ordinary updates and patches. Hello Games’ continuing release log, including the 2026 Cosmos and Forsaken releases, documents an ongoing update model rather than a rule that players must restart for every release. For an unusual update, read that release’s own notes for any save-specific instruction.
Loading an old save is also the practical way to see the update’s changes in your established universe. New systems may appear in the same game, and updated settings can be applied to existing games. Hello Games’ Waypoint documentation specifically describes changing difficulty from the pause menu and applying updated game settings to “existing games,” showing that a major systems update does not inherently require a fresh file.
What is the difference between continuing an existing save and starting a new one?

Keeping the old save is usually the convenient option because it puts you near the systems and equipment you already unlocked. A new save takes longer to build, but it can make an update feel like a complete journey and gives you a safe way to experiment without changing your established character.
Do expeditions require a new game?
No. Expeditions are the main case where players see both an existing-save entry and a new-game entry. Hello Games’ Omega update notes state: “Expeditions can now be started from an existing save, as well continuing to be accessible by starting a new game.”
That wording matters. It means an expedition can be available from two entry points:
- From an existing save: you enter the expedition while retaining the context of your established game, subject to the expedition’s own starting rules.
- From a new game: you begin a separate run designed around a clean start.
The exact menu and starting conditions can differ by expedition. Read the instructions shown for that expedition instead of assuming that one previous expedition’s behavior applies to every later one. World updates can also add a particular launch flow; the Worlds Part II notes, for example, describe starting an expedition aboard a freighter and then returning to the main menu to start a new game. That is a mode flow, not a command to restart your entire No Man’s Sky account or erase your regular save.

Should I make a new save for the new expedition?
Only if you want the expedition to be a clean run or the available expedition instructions specifically call for that route. If the expedition can be launched from your existing save, you can use that option and keep your regular save as your continuing game.
Choose an existing save when you want immediate access to your established resources or simply want to experience the expedition without repeating the opening progression. Choose a new save when you want the expedition’s starting conditions to stand on their own, when you are relearning the game, or when you want a separate file for experimentation.
Before selecting either option, check which save slot the menu is about to use. The expedition screen can present a new-game action alongside an existing-save action, and selecting the wrong one may put you into a different progression path than intended. If the wording is unclear, leave the menu, confirm which save you normally load, and then return to the expedition entry point.

How should I update safely without risking my progress?
The safest routine is simple: preserve your current save, install the update through your platform, load the established file first, and only then decide whether you want a separate run.

- Confirm your usual profile and save location. Use the same player profile and platform account that normally contains your No Man’s Sky save. A different profile can make a healthy save appear to be missing.
- Make a backup if your platform supports one. Use the platform’s own save-copy or cloud-save controls where available. Keep the original untouched until you have confirmed that the updated game loads correctly.
- Launch and select the established save. Do not choose a new-game or expedition-start command merely because it is highlighted on the updated title screen.
- Check the game before changing anything. Verify that your character, base, inventory, and current location appear as expected. Let any first-launch processing finish before closing the game.
- Start a separate save only after that check. If you want a clean run, create it as an additional progression path rather than treating it as a replacement for the established file.
Platform menu labels vary, so the exact backup command depends on where you play. The important distinction is between updating installed game files and creating a new save: the former is routine maintenance; the latter is an intentional gameplay choice.
What if the game does not show my old save after updating?
A missing save on the first screen does not prove that the update deleted it. Check the common causes in this order:
Verify the account and profile
Confirm that you launched the game under the same platform user and account used for the original save. Profile changes are especially easy to miss on systems with multiple household users.
Allow synchronization to finish
If your platform uses cloud synchronization, wait for it to complete before opening the game repeatedly or creating a replacement file. An incomplete sync can temporarily show a different local state.

Expedition, normal, and other mode entries can appear separately. Read the labels carefully and inspect every available save slot before assuming the established file is gone.
Check the update’s notes
Look for a documented migration step, mode restriction, or known issue in the notes for that specific release. Hello Games’ release log is useful for identifying the update, but a save-related instruction belongs to the individual update notes.

Do not overwrite the old data while investigating
A new game can create additional save data and make it harder to tell which file is original. If the save still cannot be found after account and synchronization checks, use the platform’s supported recovery process or Hello Games support guidance rather than repeatedly replacing files.
Can an update change settings in an existing game?
Yes. New settings and systems can be applied to an existing game, so a change in behavior or available options is not by itself evidence that a restart was required.
The Waypoint documentation explains that players can customize difficulty from the pause menu and apply updated settings to existing games. In practice, look in the pause-menu settings after updating and review the values before continuing. If you want the original balance, restore the appropriate options there rather than creating a new save solely because the update added configurable systems.
Settings changes and save migration are separate questions. A patch can add a setting that affects an established file without invalidating its progression. Conversely, if a particular release announces a special conversion, follow that release’s instruction even if the general settings remain available.
When would starting a new game actually be useful?
A new save is worthwhile when the benefit of a reset is greater than the time needed to rebuild progression.
- You want to relearn the opening. A clean file lets you revisit early tutorials and resource decisions without altering your experienced character.
- You want a separate progression path. Keep a long-running main save while using another slot for different choices, difficulty settings, or building projects.
- You want a fresh expedition start. Some players prefer to experience an expedition from its intended baseline rather than entering with an established save.
- You are returning after a long break. Rebuilding can be a practical refresher if your old save contains complex systems you no longer remember.
None of these reasons means the update failed to support the old save. They are player-controlled reasons to create another one.

- Does the note describe ordinary patching, or does it announce a special mode?
- Does it say an expedition can be entered from an existing save, a new game, or both?
- Does it mention converting, importing, resetting, or otherwise migrating a save?
- Does it identify a platform, edition, or release-specific limitation?
- Does it describe settings that can be changed from the pause menu in an existing game?

The Worlds Part II notes likewise describe a particular expedition sequence, so mode instructions should be read as instructions for that mode rather than as a universal update rule.
What is the practical rule for every future update?
Update first, load your established save, and continue unless the specific release notes say otherwise. Create a new save only because you want a clean progression path or because an expedition’s own entry flow makes that choice useful.
That rule avoids the two most common mistakes: assuming every new feature demands a restart, and assuming every expedition must replace the regular game. Your existing save is the continuity option; a new save is an optional reset or a mode-specific alternative.
