To update Nintendo Switch Sports, highlight its icon on the HOME Menu, press + or −, then choose Software Update > Via the Internet. Check the number shown beneath the game’s title in that same menu to confirm the installed version. As of October 30, 2026, Nintendo lists version 1.5.0, released July 9, 2024, as the latest update for the original game.
How do I check the installed version of Nintendo Switch Sports?
You can see the installed game version from the HOME Menu without opening the game. Connect the console to the Internet, highlight Nintendo Switch Sports, and press + or − on a controller. Nintendo says, “The current version number will display under the software title” in the Options screen.
- Go to the console’s HOME Menu.
- Highlight the Nintendo Switch Sports icon. Do not start the game.
- Press + or −.
- Read the number beneath the software title. This is the version installed on the console.
Write down the number before starting an update if you want to document what changed. Match the complete title shown on the HOME Menu, not just the word “Sports,” with the title on Nintendo’s support page. That prevents confusing the original game with Nintendo Switch Sports Resort.

Compare the number with the version history on Nintendo’s Nintendo Switch Sports update page. The listed latest version for the original game is 1.5.0, released July 9, 2024. Version numbers can change if Nintendo releases a later update, so use the official history as the reference when checking at a later date.

How do I update Nintendo Switch Sports?
Use the game’s Software Update menu, not the console’s System Update menu. Nintendo’s Internet update procedure covers Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch Lite, Nintendo Switch – OLED Model, and Nintendo Switch 2.
- Connect the console to the Internet.
- On the HOME Menu, highlight Nintendo Switch Sports without opening it.
- Press + or − to open Options.
- Select Software Update.
- Select Via the Internet.
- Let the download and installation finish. Then return to the game’s Options screen and check the number beneath the title again.
The console may indicate that no update is available when you already have the current release. If an update is offered, leave the download and installation process to finish before launching the game. An Internet connection is required for this procedure; the game does not need to be running while the update is applied.
The displayed number is the practical confirmation that the installed game version changed. Nintendo’s instructions explain where to view the number; checking it again after installation verifies the result without relying only on a download prompt.

After the installation completes, return to the HOME Menu and select the game’s Options screen again. Read the number under the title. If it reads 1.5.0, it matches Nintendo’s latest listed version for the original game as of October 30, 2026. If it still shows an older number, repeat Software Update > Via the Internet while connected, then consult Nintendo’s update history for any newer release or a title mismatch.
This check is useful even when automatic downloads are enabled. A notification or completed download does not tell you which release is installed as clearly as the version number itself. Keep in mind that 1.5.0 is the current listing on that date, not a permanent promise that no later version will appear.
What version should Nintendo Switch Sports show?
Nintendo’s update history lists 1.5.0, released July 9, 2024, as the latest update for the original Nintendo Switch Sports as of October 30, 2026. If your console shows a lower number, use the Internet update steps above and check Nintendo’s history again if the number does not change.
Version 1.5.0 added Basketball to Play Globally, Play Locally, and Play with Friends, and included gameplay fixes. Earlier milestones provide useful context: version 1.4.0 added reissued items, while version 1.3.0 added Golf. These are game-update milestones, not Nintendo Switch system firmware versions.

The update is required for the game’s Internet features. That requirement concerns the game software version; it is separate from the Nintendo Switch Online membership required to use online game features.
Is Nintendo Switch Sports Resort the same game?
No. Nintendo Switch Sports Resort is a different game, with its own update history. Nintendo lists a version 1.1.0 update for Sports Resort dated October 21, 2026; that number does not replace or supersede version 1.5.0 for the original Nintendo Switch Sports.
Before comparing version numbers, confirm the exact title shown on the HOME Menu and match it to the heading on the corresponding Nintendo update page. A 1.1.0 listing for Sports Resort cannot be used to decide whether the original game is current. See Nintendo’s separate Nintendo Switch Sports Resort update page for that game’s history.

What is the difference between a game update and a system update?
A game update changes Nintendo Switch Sports; a system update changes the console’s operating software. They have separate menus, and installing one does not mean the other has been installed.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

| Console system software | System Settings > System > System Update | The console’s system version |
If the game’s version is below the current number in Nintendo’s game-update history, use the game’s Software Update option. Do not use System Update as a substitute. Conversely, if you are trying to update console firmware, the game’s Options screen is the wrong place.
Can the game update automatically?
On original Switch-family consoles, Nintendo documents an Auto-Update Software setting that downloads installed software updates while the console is online. The setting is at System Settings > System > Auto-Update Software; turn it on to allow automatic downloads. Nintendo also says an available game update can prompt when you start a game while online.
| Method | What you control | How you confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Manual | Choose the game, then Software Update > Via the Internet. | Read the number beneath the title after installation. |
| Automatic | Enable Auto-Update Software and keep the console online. | Still open the game’s Options screen and read the installed number. |
Automatic updating is convenient, but it does not remove the value of a manual check when you need to confirm Basketball access, troubleshoot an online-feature message, or record the exact installed release. Nintendo’s general guidance is available in its software auto-update instructions.
Does updating require Nintendo Switch Online?
Nintendo’s game-update procedure requires an Internet connection, but Nintendo Switch Online membership is not identified as a requirement to download the update. Membership is required for the game’s online features, which is a separate matter from installing the patch. You do not need to buy a membership merely to select Via the Internet and install version 1.5.0.
Nintendo’s FAQ asks why a player can only play a trial when selecting “Play Globally.” Its answer explains that someone without an active membership may see a trial against computer opponents. That trial behavior does not mean the game update itself requires a membership, and it does not change the version shown under the software title.
Will an update delete my save data?
Nintendo says, “Save data will still be available for use after downloading the update.” The update process is intended to make the game’s newer software version available, not to remove your save data. You can therefore check the installed number and update without treating the patch as a save-data reset procedure.
If you are troubleshooting, distinguish a save-data question from an update question: a failure to download is usually addressed through the Internet connection, storage space, or the correct menu, while Nintendo’s stated update guidance says saved progress remains available after the download.
What should I do if the update will not download?
The Via the Internet option needs an Internet connection. Start with the simple checks below and use the exact on-screen error guidance if the console displays a code or message.
- Check the connection: make sure the console is connected to the Internet, then retry Software Update > Via the Internet. The procedure cannot work offline.
- Check available storage: if the console reports that there is too little space, remove content you no longer need or otherwise free space on the console or supported card before retrying.
- Consider expansion only if needed: Nintendo documents a microSDXC card as an expansion option for original Switch-family systems when storage is insufficient. It is a conditional storage solution, not a required purchase for every update.
- Use the right menu: make sure you selected the game’s Software Update option rather than the console’s System Update.
- Recheck the title: confirm that the icon is the original Nintendo Switch Sports, not Sports Resort, before comparing the number.
Nintendo’s material does not establish a download-size figure or promise a fixed completion time for every connection and storage configuration. Do not treat the absence of a stated size or time as evidence that the update failed. If it still fails after addressing a connection or space message, follow the on-screen error guidance and Nintendo Support instructions for that specific error.

Does Switch 2 change the storage advice?
Nintendo’s game-specific update page covers Nintendo Switch 2 as well as Nintendo Switch, Switch Lite, and the OLED Model. However, the microSDXC expansion guidance cited for low storage is documented for the original Switch-family systems. Do not automatically apply that recommendation to Switch 2; first follow the storage instructions appropriate to that console and the message it displays.
The game-versus-system distinction remains the same: the game’s version is read from the title’s Options screen, while console firmware is handled through System Settings > System > System Update.
Do I need anything else to play after updating?
The update and the game’s play requirements are separate. Nintendo Switch Online is needed for online game features, while an Internet connection is needed for the update procedure. The accessory requirements for particular control styles do not change how version 1.5.0 is downloaded.
Nintendo says the game does not support Handheld Mode or Pro Controllers. For Soccer, the physical edition includes a Leg Strap accessory. Nintendo’s product description says, “This physical version of the Nintendo Switch Sports game includes the Leg Strap accessory to use in Soccer.” A digital owner who wants that supported control option can purchase a separate Nintendo Leg Strap; Nintendo identifies the left Joy-Con as separate rather than included with that strap purchase.
Joy-Con 2 will not fit the Leg Strap. That is an accessory-compatibility limitation, not an update requirement. You do not need a Leg Strap, a left Joy-Con purchase, or any special controller to install version 1.5.0. Those purchases matter only if you want the supported Soccer setup or another compatible control arrangement.
Physical game, digital game, and accessory choices
| Situation | What Nintendo identifies | Relevance to updating |
|---|---|---|
| Buying the physical edition | The physical Nintendo Switch Sports version includes a Leg Strap for Soccer. | The included accessory is a play option; it is not needed to install updates. |
| Already owning the digital game | A separate Nintendo Leg Strap is an option for supported Soccer controls. | Buying the strap does not update the software and is not required for the patch. |
| Need another compatible controller | Nintendo’s compatibility information identifies the left Joy-Con as a separate, conditional purchase and rules out Joy-Con 2 for the strap. | Controller purchases address play setup, not download or version verification. |
| Need more storage on an original Switch-family console | A compatible microSDXC card is a conditional expansion option. | Consider it only when a storage warning blocks the download. |
There is no Nintendo-listed requirement to purchase a membership, accessory, controller, or storage card simply to check the installed version. Buy only what matches the problem you are solving: online membership for online play, a strap or compatible Joy-Con for certain controls, and storage expansion when the console reports insufficient space.
