Nintendo Switch Sports is the better choice for online matches, a current console setup, and quick Joy-Con controls. Wii Sports Resort is the stronger pick for local play and activity variety: its 12-sport package offers far more motion-based events than Switch Sports’ current seven-sport roster. The practical decision depends on the hardware you already own. Switch Sports runs on Nintendo Switch and supports online play through Nintendo Switch Online; Wii Sports Resort runs on Wii, requires Wii MotionPlus, and is documented primarily as a local multiplayer game.
| Name | Best for | Key spec | Platforms | Checked |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nintendo Switch Sports | Online competition and easy modern setup | Seven-sport post-update roster; online play requires Nintendo Switch Online | Nintendo Switch | Oct 2026 |
| Wii Sports Resort | Local groups that want the widest activity selection | 12 sports and activities; Wii MotionPlus required | Wii | Oct 2026 |
Is Nintendo Switch Sports better than Wii Sports Resort?
Neither game wins every category. Nintendo Switch Sports is better when remote competition, a current console, and low setup friction matter most. Wii Sports Resort is better when you want the largest catalog of activities and already have compatible Wii equipment.
This is a feature comparison rather than a performance test. No independent latency, accuracy, or control study establishes that one system is objectively more precise. The defensible distinction is between Switch Sports’ compact Joy-Con gestures and Wii Sports Resort’s broader collection of simulated grips, swings, steering and pointing motions.
Choose Nintendo Switch Sports if online play is important
Nintendo describes local and online matches for Switch Sports, including play with people who are far away. Nintendo Support states that an active Nintendo Switch Online membership is required for online play. That makes Switch Sports the clear choice for friends who cannot be in the same room, provided every player has the required subscription and hardware.

Choose Wii Sports Resort if variety matters more than connectivity
The official Wii Sports Resort manual describes 12 sports and activities, several with multiple events or modes. Its documented multiplayer is local, with player limits varying by activity. If your group wants archery, wakeboarding, cycling, canoeing, power cruising, Frisbee or air sports, the Wii package covers experiences Switch Sports does not.
Which has more sports, Switch Sports or Wii Sports Resort?
Wii Sports Resort has more: 12 named sports and activities versus seven in the current Nintendo Switch Sports roster. The raw totals also understate Resort’s variety because several entries contain multiple activity types.
Nintendo Switch Sports’ current roster
- Tennis: racket swings and positioning in a familiar match format.
- Bowling: a shared concept with Wii Sports Resort and one of the easiest activities for new players.
- Chambara: Nintendo’s sword-fighting activity, using timing and directional swings.
- Soccer: a larger-field sport with motion inputs; Nintendo identifies a Leg Strap requirement for some Soccer gameplay.
- Volleyball: timing-based serves, sets and attacks.
- Badminton: quick racket exchanges distinct from Tennis.
- Golf: added after launch.
Nintendo’s 2022 investor materials described six sports at launch and said Golf was planned for fall 2022. The post-update roster is generally listed as the seven sports above.

Wii Sports Resort’s 12 activities
- Swordplay
- Wakeboarding
- Frisbee
- Archery
- Basketball
- Table Tennis
- Golf
- Bowling
- Canoeing
- Cycling
- Power Cruising
- Air Sports
The official manual’s list includes both conventional sports and vehicle or flight activities. That is why Resort feels less like a short sports compilation and more like a motion-control showcase.
Where the catalogs overlap
Bowling and Golf appear in both games. Switch Sports’ Chambara is the modern counterpart to Resort’s Swordplay. Tennis is present in Switch Sports, while Resort offers the related but distinct Table Tennis. Switch Sports adds Soccer, Volleyball and Badminton; Resort instead supplies Archery, Wakeboarding, Cycling, Canoeing, Power Cruising, Frisbee and Air Sports.
Can you play Nintendo Switch Sports online with friends?
Yes. Nintendo Switch Sports supports online matches, but Nintendo Support requires an active Nintendo Switch Online membership for online play. Local matches do not use that online subscription requirement.

What online play changes
Online mode lets players compete when they are not sharing a room. Nintendo’s 2022 investor material describes people playing locally or joining matches with players who are far away. The subscription requirement is the trade-off for that convenience; the game itself does not make remote play a hardware-only feature.
Do you need extra Joy-Cons for local multiplayer?
Additional controllers may be required for multiplayer, depending on the activity and the number of people playing. Nintendo also notes that additional accessories can be needed for some multiplayer situations. Check the activity’s controller instructions before inviting a full group, rather than assuming one pair of Joy-Con controllers covers every format.
For Soccer, Nintendo identifies a Leg Strap requirement for some gameplay. Treat the strap as an activity-specific accessory, not a universal requirement for every Switch Sports event.
How does Wii Sports Resort multiplayer work?
Wii Sports Resort’s official manual documents local multiplayer, with the maximum number of players depending on the activity. Modes include direct competition, team formats, turn-taking and arrangements in which players share or hand over a controller.
Player counts are activity-specific
The manual documents activities supporting between one and four players. That does not mean every event supports four simultaneous players: some use turns, while others have team or shared-controller structures. Open the individual activity instructions to confirm its player limit before planning a group session.

What the manual does not document
The official manual documents local modes and does not document native online matchmaking. It is therefore safer to describe Resort as a local multiplayer game rather than claim that it has an online service comparable to Switch Sports.

Which motion controls are better: Joy-Con or Wii MotionPlus?
They serve different goals. Switch Sports uses compact Joy-Con swinging motions intended to make matches easy to start. Wii Sports Resort uses Wii MotionPlus for a wider range of movement types, including pointing, simulated grips, paddling, steering and flying.
How Switch Sports uses Joy-Con
Nintendo’s investor material characterizes Switch Sports as using “simple controls based on swinging the Joy-Con.” That approach reduces the number of accessories a new player must understand and suits short local matches or online sessions. The smaller roster also means fewer control schemes to learn.
How Wii Sports Resort uses MotionPlus
The Wii Sports Resort manual says the included Wii MotionPlus accessory makes play “even more precise.” MotionPlus is part of the game’s required control platform rather than an optional enhancement. Resort then builds different gestures around it: Swordplay uses directional swings; Archery uses a Nunchuk for aiming and drawing; Canoeing uses paddling motions; Cycling, Power Cruising and Air Sports use steering or flight-oriented movements.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchIs one system objectively more accurate?
No cited benchmark in the available evidence proves that. Motion accuracy depends on the activity, the controller configuration and the player’s setup. Choose Joy-Con for simpler modern input; choose MotionPlus when experimenting with a larger range of gestures is the priority.
Does Wii Sports Resort work without MotionPlus?
Not as a supported complete setup. Wii Sports Resort requires Wii MotionPlus hardware, either built into a compatible Wii Remote or attached as an accessory. Some activities also require a Nunchuk, so a standard Wii Remote alone is not enough for the whole package.
Hardware checklist for Resort
- A working Wii console and the game.
- Wii MotionPlus-compatible controller hardware for each player arrangement that needs it.
- A Nunchuk for activities such as Archery and any other event that specifies one.
- Enough compatible controllers for the chosen multiplayer format.
- A clear play area and properly secured wrist straps.
Because Resort is a legacy Wii title, the hardware requirement is its main setup barrier. If you do not already own the console and MotionPlus equipment, Switch Sports is the lower-friction way to start motion-based sports on current hardware.

What accessories do I need for Nintendo Switch Sports?
Start with Joy-Con controllers and then check the individual activity. Nintendo identifies the Leg Strap for some Soccer gameplay and warns that additional accessories may be required for multiplayer.
For a basic session
- Nintendo Switch console with the game.
- Compatible Joy-Con controllers.
- Wrist straps and enough open space to swing safely.
For Soccer
Use the Nintendo Switch Sports Leg Strap where the activity requires it. Nintendo limits that requirement to some Soccer gameplay, so buying or attaching the strap is not necessary simply to play Tennis, Bowling, Golf or the other sports.
For groups
Plan controllers around the specific event and player count. A second pair of Joy-Con controllers can be useful for local sessions, but the exact requirement varies by activity. Verify the on-screen instructions instead of treating every sport as a four-controller game.
Is Wii Sports Resort worth buying if I already have Nintendo Switch Sports?
It can be, but only if you want activities that Switch Sports does not offer and you can assemble the Wii MotionPlus setup. Buying Resort solely for online play would be a poor fit because its official documentation is local-focused and does not describe native online matchmaking.
Reasons to add Resort
- You want Archery, Wakeboarding, Frisbee, Cycling, Canoeing, Power Cruising or Air Sports.
- Your household prefers pass-the-controller or team sessions in one room.
- You already own a Wii, MotionPlus hardware and any needed Nunchuks.
- You want more control experiments than a seven-sport package provides.
Reasons to stay with Switch Sports
- Your friends play remotely and you are willing to maintain Nintendo Switch Online.
- You want Soccer, Volleyball or Badminton.
- You prefer Joy-Con controls and do not want to source legacy Wii accessories.
- You value a smaller set of activities that is easier to explain to first-time players.
How should you choose between the two games?
Use the hardware and multiplayer questions first; the sports list should break a tie rather than come first.

What are the main trade-offs in one table?
| Comparison point | Nintendo Switch Sports | Wii Sports Resort |
|---|---|---|
| Platform | Nintendo Switch | Wii |
| Catalog | Seven sports after the post-launch additions | 12 sports and activities in the official manual |
| Online play | Supported; Nintendo Switch Online membership required | Official manual documents local modes; native online matchmaking is not documented |

| Best strength | Modern online multiplayer and easy entry | Activity breadth and control variety |
| Main drawback | Smaller catalog and a subscription requirement for online play | Legacy hardware requirement and local-focused multiplayer |
How do you play safely with either game?
Clear the play area, attach the wrist strap and leave enough room for a full arm swing. The Wii Sports Resort manual explicitly gives this type of safety guidance, and the same precautions are sensible for Joy-Con play.

How we picked the recommendation
The recommendation uses documented platform support, roster size, multiplayer modes, controller requirements and accessory friction. Nintendo’s 2022 Switch Sports materials establish the launch and online context; Nintendo Support establishes the Nintendo Switch Online requirement; and the Wii Sports Resort official manual establishes its 12-activity catalog, local multiplayer formats and MotionPlus guidance. No performance score or hands-on control ranking is used.
Which game should you buy?
Buy Nintendo Switch Sports when the priority is online multiplayer, a current Nintendo Switch setup or straightforward Joy-Con input. Buy Wii Sports Resort when you already have Wii MotionPlus equipment and want the much larger local activity catalog. If both systems are available, the deciding question is simple: remote matches favor Switch Sports, while breadth of motion activities favors Wii Sports Resort.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can Nintendo Switch Sports and Wii Sports Resort players play together?
No. They are separate games on different consoles, and neither title provides cross-platform matchmaking between Switch and Wii.
Does Nintendo Switch Sports include every Wii Sports Resort activity?
No. Switch Sports includes Bowling, Golf and Chambara among its overlaps, but it does not include Resort activities such as Archery, Wakeboarding, Cycling, Canoeing, Power Cruising, Frisbee or Air Sports.
Can one Nintendo Switch console host local Switch Sports matches?
Yes, Switch Sports supports local matches, but the number of controllers and players depends on the activity. Nintendo notes that additional accessories may be required for some multiplayer situations.
What is the biggest hidden cost of choosing Wii Sports Resort?
The expense is usually compatibility rather than an online subscription: you need a Wii, Wii MotionPlus-capable controller hardware and, for some activities, a Nunchuk. Used hardware condition and availability can vary.
