To back up compatible Nintendo Switch saves, use Save Data Cloud through an active Nintendo Switch Online membership, then manually confirm the important games show as backed up before you delete software, move to another console, or start over. Save files live in the console’s system memory—not on a microSD card or game card—and downloading or installing a different game will not overwrite another game’s save. The bigger risks are that some games do not support cloud backup and that each game gets only one cloud save per Nintendo Account.

What should I do before trying a new game?

First decide what “trying a new game” means. If you are installing a different title, that does not overwrite the saves for games already on the console. If you are deleting software to free storage, its save data normally remains in system memory. If you mean starting a fresh playthrough of a game you already have, that can replace that game’s existing local save—and, when automatic backup is enabled, eventually replace its cloud save too.

For important progress, use this short checklist before changing anything:

  1. Check that Nintendo Switch Online is active on the Nintendo Account associated with the user whose save you want to protect.
  2. Open System Settings > Data Management > Save Data Cloud, select that user, and check the status of each important title.
  3. Manually back up supported titles that do not show a current cloud backup. Compare dates before choosing Backup or Download if you use more than one console.
  4. For unsupported games, do not assume there is a cloud copy. Animal Crossing: New Horizons has a separate island-backup process; other games may need to stay on the original console unless you are moving their save to another console.
  5. If you only need storage space, delete the game software rather than its save data. A microSD card can hold compatible downloads and media, but it is not a save-data backup.

Save Data Cloud is Nintendo’s online backup service for supported software. Nintendo describes it as protection against events such as hardware failure. It is useful as a safety net, but it is not a way to keep multiple versions of the same game save.

Do I need Nintendo Switch Online to back up saves?

Yes. Save Data Cloud requires an active Nintendo Switch Online membership linked to the Nintendo Account for the user whose save you are backing up, as well as an internet connection. The basic membership is enough; the Expansion Pack is not required for cloud saves.

Nintendo’s U.S. membership overview listed these annual prices as of October 29, 2026:

Membership U.S. annual price Accounts covered
Individual Nintendo Switch Online $19.99 1 Nintendo Account
Family Nintendo Switch Online $34.99 Up to 8 Nintendo Accounts
Individual Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack $49.99 1 Nintendo Account
Family Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack $79.99 Up to 8 Nintendo Accounts

Prices vary by country and can change. Nintendo’s 2026 U.S. figures work out to less than $5 per person per year for an eight-person basic family membership, or about $10 per person per year for the Expansion Pack family plan. The Expansion Pack adds other membership benefits; it does not add extra save slots.

Nintendo Switch consoles running system menu version 6.0.0 or later can use Save Data Cloud. The feature applies to Nintendo Switch, Switch Lite, Switch OLED, and Nintendo Switch 2, subject to title compatibility. Save data is associated with a user and Nintendo Account; it is not shared among different user accounts through the cloud service.

How do I manually back up a Switch save?

Manual backup is the most dependable choice when you are about to free space, travel, send a console for repair, or make a change that could overwrite progress. Close the game first: backup is blocked while that software is running.

From the HOME Menu:

  1. Highlight the game’s icon on the HOME Menu.
  2. Press the − or + Button to open its Options.
  3. Select Save Data Cloud.
  4. Select the user whose save you want to protect.
  5. Select Back Up Save Data.

From System Settings:

  1. Open System Settings > Data Management > Save Data Cloud.
  2. Select the user.
  3. Select the software title, then choose Back Up Save Data.

Afterward, check the title’s status and backup date. Do not treat a queued backup as a completed one if you are about to take a risk with the console. Nintendo says there is no limit to the storage space or number of software titles that can be backed up, but the service still allows only one save-data file per software title for each Nintendo Account.

How does automatic backup work, and how can I check it?

Automatic Save-Data Backup is enabled by default for compatible software when you start a Nintendo Switch Online membership. It can run while the console is asleep or otherwise idle, but it is not a guarantee that the latest progress has already reached the server.

Automatic backup will not run if the console is fully powered off, offline, or has the setting disabled. The game currently being played is not backed up until you exit it or put the console to sleep. Nintendo also notes that automatic backup is paused while playing software that uses online communication. If a save has not yet been uploaded, use the manual method and verify its status.

To inspect or change the setting, go to System Settings > Data Management > Save Data Cloud, select the user, then select Settings. The toggle is called Automatic Save-Data Backup in U.S. wording and Automatically Back Up Save Data in U.K. wording. Settings are managed per console and can be adjusted for individual games.

There are a few less obvious cases to watch:

  • A newly subscribed user’s older saves may be waiting in a backup queue while other titles update. Manually back up the games that matter first.
  • If the same title already has a cloud save from another console, another console may not automatically upload its local copy. A manual backup can replace the server copy, so compare dates before proceeding.
  • If you are playing a game on one console while another console holds the cloud version, do not assume the cloud copy is the newest. Check timestamps on both saves.

Which Switch games do not support cloud saves?

Not every game supports Save Data Cloud. Nintendo’s Singapore support list, dated November 27, 2025, identifies these Nintendo and Pokémon titles as unsupported:

  • 1-2-Switch
  • Splatoon 2
  • Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Pokémon: Let’s Go, Eevee!
  • Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield
  • Animal Crossing: New Horizons, including its Nintendo Switch 2 Edition
  • Pokémon Café ReMix
  • Pokémon UNITE
  • Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Pokémon Shining Pearl
  • Pokémon Legends: Arceus
  • Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet
  • Pokémon Legends: Z-A, including its Nintendo Switch 2 Edition

This is Nintendo’s listed Nintendo/Pokémon exception set, not a complete list of every unsupported game. Third-party games can also be excluded, and compatibility can differ by title. Check the software’s Nintendo eShop product page under Software Details beside Save Data Cloud Backup, or look in the Nintendo Store listing under About this item. You can also open the game’s Options and select Save Data Cloud; an unsupported title will show a message such as “Save Data Cloud backup is not supported for this software.”

Online multiplayer support does not mean a game supports cloud saves. Conversely, some editions do support them: Nintendo Switch 2 support information lists The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Nintendo Switch 2 Edition and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Nintendo Switch 2 Edition as compatible. Check the exact edition rather than relying on the series name.

Can I copy Switch save data to an SD card?

No. Save data is stored in the console’s system memory. It cannot be copied to a microSD card or microSD Express card, and it is not stored on a physical game card. Nintendo’s Switch 2 storage guidance states these limits directly; the same practical rule applies when planning a save backup on the original Switch family.

Storage cards still have a role: compatible downloaded software, DLC, and updates can use card storage, and Switch 2 can store screenshots and videos on microSD Express. But a card full of game files is not a fallback copy of your progress. If a save is lost, copying or recovering the card’s contents will not recreate it.

Deleting downloaded software to make room does not normally delete its save. Nintendo says save data remains in the console’s system memory; after downloading the software again, you can continue playing. Save data for physical software is also not on the cartridge. Digital and physical versions of the same software can use the same save on a console, subject to publisher-specific exceptions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will deleting a game delete my save data?

Deleting the software and deleting save data are different actions. Removing a downloaded game to make room leaves its save in system memory, so you can download the software again and resume, provided the save itself has not been deleted or overwritten.

Be careful to choose the software-management option rather than a command to delete save data. The save remains on the original console, but that is not the same as having a cloud backup: a damaged, lost, or replaced console can still put a local-only save at risk. For supported games, verify a cloud copy before deleting software if you want an additional recovery path.

How do I restore a cloud save without overwriting the wrong progress?

Restore only after checking which copy is newer. A download replaces the existing local save for that game and cannot be undone, so compare the cloud and console dates before confirming—especially if you use multiple consoles.

Nintendo documents three ways to download a backup:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • From the HOME Menu, highlight the game, press − or +, select Save Data Cloud, choose the user, then select Download Save Data.
  • Go to System Settings > Data Management > Save Data Cloud, select the user and the relevant backup, then choose Download Save Data.
  • Allow automatic download during sleep when that setting is enabled and the cloud copy is newer.

Automatic Save-Data Download is off by default on Nintendo Switch and on by default on Nintendo Switch 2, according to Nintendo Singapore support information. The first download for a title must be done manually before automatic download will work for that game. If a message says “The backup save data is older than the save data on this console,” stop and check the dates rather than forcing a restore.

When a membership ends, the backed-up files become inaccessible. Nintendo says you can regain access to backups from the previous subscription period by re-subscribing within 180 days. Treat that as a recovery window, not permanent free storage: keep the membership active if you rely on cloud saves, and remember that the console’s local save is separate from the inaccessible server copy.

How do I back up an Animal Crossing island?

Animal Crossing: New Horizons does not support ordinary Save Data Cloud backups. Nintendo Switch Online members can instead enable the game’s dedicated island backup, which is intended to recover the last saved island if the console is lost, stolen, or sent for repair. Enable it while you still have access to the original console; it cannot help if no backup was established before access was lost.

Use Nintendo’s official How to Back Up and Restore Island Save Data (Animal Crossing: New Horizons) instructions for the in-game button sequence. The island-backup flow is separate from the general Save Data Cloud menu, so do not expect to find a normal per-title cloud backup there. Happy Home Paradise save data is included in the island backup, but the DLC must be downloaded on the replacement console before that content can be played.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

One console has one shared island, with up to eight users total. If both consoles are available and you are changing consoles rather than recovering a lost one, Nintendo documents separate transfer choices: transfer the whole island and its residents, move a single resident (not the Resident Representative), or restore an island backup on a replacement console. Island backup is a recovery copy, not a way to maintain two independently progressing islands.

What if my game has no cloud backup?

If a title does not support cloud saves and you have both consoles nearby, Nintendo’s Transfer Your Save Data can move a compatible save between consoles. Nintendo Switch Online is not required. This is a move, not a backup copy: after a successful send, the save is deleted from the source console.

Both consoles need an internet connection and the latest system update, should be near each other, and must have the same Nintendo Account linked. On the source console, open System Settings > Data Management > Transfer Your Save Data > Send Save Data to Another Console, then choose the user and titles. On the target, open the same menu and select Receive Save Data.

If the target already has a save for that game, you may need to cancel or choose Overwrite Save Data. Overwriting the target’s save cannot be undone. Confirm which console has the version you intend to keep before starting. Compatible software saves can move between Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2; Nintendo Switch 2 software saves cannot be downloaded to the original Switch family.

Can I keep my old save and start a new game?

Not as two cloud backups for the same software title under one Nintendo Account. Nintendo allows one cloud save per title per account. Starting a new playthrough that replaces the existing local save can also update the cloud copy if automatic backup remains on. Turning automatic backup off does not create another slot; it only stops that title’s automatic uploads.

If preserving the old playthrough matters, do not begin a same-title restart on the assumption that the cloud has an archive. Keep the existing save untouched, or first check whether that game offers its own in-game profiles or save slots. Those options are title-specific, and a game’s own multiple slots are different from Nintendo’s single cloud backup. If you proceed with a new file, assume any backup you later upload will replace the previous server copy. Nintendo warns that backing up overwrites the server save and cannot be reversed.

What do common backup errors mean?

Most save-data warnings are telling you that the two copies do not match or the game is not eligible. Pause before choosing an overwrite option.

  • “Save Data Cloud backup is not supported for this software.” That title cannot use Save Data Cloud. Check for a game-specific recovery method, or use console-to-console transfer only when you are ready to move the save.
  • “Backup was canceled because other save data has been backed up.” Another console has a cloud copy for that title. Compare local and cloud dates; a manual backup from this console could overwrite the server version.
  • “The backup save data is older than the save data on this console.” The console has newer local progress than the cloud version. Do not download the older version unless you intentionally want to replace the local copy.
  • Communication error or stalled automatic backup. Close the game, confirm the console is online and updated, then open Save Data Cloud and compare timestamps before manually selecting Backup or Download. Nintendo Switch 2 support gives error 2179-2102 as an example of a backup communication issue.

Deleting a cloud backup removes the server copy; it does not delete the local console save. But a deleted cloud file cannot be restored, and deleting server data does not require a Parental Controls PIN. Avoid deleting cloud data unless you understand which copy will remain.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I back up Switch saves while the console is offline?

No. Save Data Cloud needs an internet connection to upload or download a file. Your local save remains available offline, but an offline console cannot update its server copy.

Does Save Data Cloud back up screenshots and videos too?

No. It is for supported games’ save data, not screenshots or video captures. Manage captures separately through the console’s data-management options and compatible storage.

Can two users on one Switch share one cloud save?

No. Cloud saves are tied to the Nintendo Account and user that created the save. A family membership can cover multiple accounts, but it does not merge their game progress.

Can I recover an Animal Crossing island if I never enabled island backup?

Nintendo’s island-recovery option depends on having enabled the feature on the original console before losing access. If the console is still available, consult Nintendo’s island-backup instructions before changing or transferring anything.
