A completed Nintendo eShop download is generally final and non-refundable unless Nintendo authorizes a refund or applicable law requires one. An eShop pre-order is different: it is not charged at checkout, and you can usually cancel before Nintendo processes payment and pre-loads the game, beginning no sooner than seven days before release. The exact refund rules depend on your region, and UK/EU cancellation rights should not be confused with Nintendo’s US policy.
Can I get a refund on Nintendo eShop?
Usually not for a completed digital purchase. The answer depends on where your Nintendo Account is based, whether the transaction is a finished download or an uncharged pre-order, and whether a consumer-law right applies.
United States: Nintendo of America’s digital-products policy says: “Except as authorized by Nintendo or as required by applicable law, all payments that you make through the Nintendo Account services (including pre-purchases and subscription payments) are final and non-refundable.” The US Account User Agreement separately says payments for products may be refundable as required by applicable law, and that some products may be returned or exchanged. Nintendo does not publish a general US refund workflow or criteria for goodwill refunds in the cited policy. If a completed purchase still needs review, contact Nintendo Support; do not assume support will approve a refund.
United Kingdom: Nintendo’s UK support page says: “We are unable to provide refunds or exchanges for mistaken purchases, and/or if you don’t like the game.” That guidance sits alongside a statutory right in the GB Nintendo Account User Agreement, so the two should not be collapsed into a blanket claim that UK consumers have no cancellation rights. The agreement describes a 14-day period to cancel a contract, but digital-content cancellation rights can end when supply begins after the customer expressly consents and acknowledges losing that right. Nintendo says eShop checkout includes that consent for immediate performance of a completed digital purchase.

Singapore: Nintendo Support says downloadable software and DLC cannot be returned, refunded, or transferred once purchased, and that support cannot make exceptions. Malaysia’s terms say change-of-mind cancellations are not accepted to the greatest extent permitted by law; they leave room for a discretionary refund, processed to the original payment method or, in some cases, another method or an international bank transfer that may arrive after bank fees. Those statements are regional, not a single worldwide refund rule.
No published statistic in the cited materials establishes refund approval rates, average processing time, or chargeback success. For a US request, Nintendo’s policy leaves room for refunds authorized by Nintendo or required by law, but does not explain the criteria or timing. For Singapore, the cited support page expressly rules out exceptions.
How do the rules differ by region and transaction?
The key distinction is whether the digital content has been supplied. An uncharged pre-order may still be cancellable; a finished eShop download is treated differently. Physical Nintendo Store goods follow a separate returns policy.

The UK agreement says: “You have the right to cancel this contract within 14 days without giving any reason.” It runs from the day the contract is concluded. The same agreement explains that a digital-content right can expire earlier after express consent to begin supply and acknowledgment of the loss of the right. Nintendo UK’s checkout description is why the agreement’s general 14-day language does not mean a completed download can automatically be returned.
How do I cancel a Nintendo Switch pre-order?
Cancel it before Nintendo processes payment and pre-loads the title. You need the Nintendo Account that placed the reservation and access to a Switch or Switch 2 console, or a phone or computer.

On Nintendo Switch 2 or Nintendo Switch
- From the HOME Menu, open Nintendo eShop and select the user who made the pre-order. You may need to authenticate with the account password or PIN.
- Select the user icon in the upper-right corner.
- Open Account Information, then Your Pre-Orders. In Singapore’s labeled instructions, the menu is called Your Preorders.
- Select Cancel beside the title. Singapore’s label is Cancel Preorder.
- Confirm the cancellation. Singapore Support says no confirmation email is sent there; if the title no longer appears under Your Preorders, the cancellation succeeded.
On a phone or computer
- Go to accounts.nintendo.com and sign in with the Nintendo Account used for the reservation.
- Open Purchase History.
- In the Pre-orders section, choose View pre-orders. Singapore’s instructions say to use Purchase History, then Your Preorders, through accounts.nintendo.com/portal/payments.
- Select Cancel beside the title.
If the cancellation option is unavailable in the Americas, Nintendo directs customers to Nintendo Support. UK Nintendo Store digital pre-orders are a separate sales channel: Nintendo UK says to exercise its voluntary cancellation right by contacting customer support, rather than using the on-console eShop steps above. Physical UK Store orders can be cancelled from My Orders with Cancel Order before they become returns.
When does Nintendo charge for pre-orders?
Nintendo does not take payment at the moment an eligible eShop pre-order is placed. Nintendo Support’s Americas FAQ says: “You will be charged for the full amount of the purchase no sooner than 7 days prior to the game’s release date.” The charge and pre-load mark the point after which the normal pre-order cancellation window closes.

Those dates illustrate the policy window, not a universal date calculation for every region or release. When the title is already within seven days of launch, the store shows Proceed to Purchase rather than Proceed to Pre-order; payment is immediate, and Singapore Support says that reservation cannot be cancelled.
After a successful payment, Nintendo downloads a non-playable version and places its icon on the HOME Menu. The game becomes playable after a small release-day update. If the console is online, launching the title prompts for the update; if it is connected while in sleep mode, the update can install automatically. Insufficient storage pauses the download.
Why was my Nintendo eShop pre-order canceled?
A pre-order can be cancelled by the account holder or automatically if payment cannot be completed or the account or purchase becomes ineligible. If the game has not released, you can place a new pre-order; after release, you can buy it normally, at the then-current price.

Payment or account issues
- Insufficient eShop funds: If Available Funds is the selected payment method and the balance is short when payment is due, the reservation is cancelled. A balance that was sufficient on the reservation date does not guarantee it will cover the charge later.
- Card or PayPal failure: Nintendo lists an expired card or a reached spending limit among possible reasons a payment cannot be collected.
- Account eligibility changed: Nintendo lists a deleted or ineligible account, deleted tax information, a change in age-rating eligibility, or a server error during payment as possible causes.
- Game Voucher unavailable: A selected Nintendo Switch Game Voucher is not reserved at the time of pre-order. Spending it on another title before collection, or an expired Nintendo Switch Online membership, can prevent redemption and cancel the reservation.
Delays and overlapping reservations
A release delay postpones payment rather than cancelling the pre-order, according to Singapore Support. Singapore also describes a bundle case: if both a bundle and one of its component titles are reserved, payment for the bundle first cancels the component reservation; reserving the component first does not cancel the bundle.
If a pre-order is cancelled automatically, you can reserve it again if it is still unreleased, but the price or discount may have changed. Nintendo uses the price selected at reservation for the scheduled payment, but some offers depend on still holding a qualifying product when payment occurs. A cancellation can therefore mean the same discount is no longer available when you buy again. Pre-order bonus codes are only available after payment and pre-load; if the reservation is cancelled, the code is not issued, and a later purchase does not restore that pre-order bonus.
Which payment methods can affect a pre-order?
Nintendo’s Americas FAQ names credit card, PayPal, Nintendo Switch Game Voucher, and available Nintendo eShop funds as possible methods. The preferred payment setting for pre-orders and automatic renewals is shared and can be changed in Nintendo eShop or at ec.nintendo.com. Nintendo’s website says PayPal checkout is available to residents of the United States, Canada, and Mexico who are at least 18.
eShop funds, cards, and PayPal
Nintendo applies available eShop funds first even when a credit card or PayPal is selected for the rest. If the balance covers the full price, the external payment method is not charged; if it covers part, the remaining amount is charged to the selected method. The exact split can change if the wallet balance changes before collection. In Singapore, accounts belonging to users under 18 cannot register a credit card or PayPal, so their pre-orders are limited to eShop funds; a parent aged 18 or older may select a card or PayPal for a child account in the cases described by that support page.
A Nintendo eShop Card adds money to the wallet; it is not a refund mechanism. Nintendo’s purchase instructions say to enter the 16-character download code from the back of the card to add funds. The GB Account User Agreement says wallet funds are tied to the wallet, cannot be transferred, and are non-refundable: “Funds are non-refundable and cannot be exchanged for cash or credit.” The Canadian physical returns policy also excludes digital items, including eShop cards, even when the card itself was bought as a physical product.

Game Vouchers and Gold Points
A Nintendo Switch Game Voucher can be chosen for a qualifying pre-order, but redemption happens when payment is collected, no sooner than seven days before release. Vouchers are not reserved when you submit the reservation, and Nintendo says they cannot be redeemed for games exclusive to Nintendo Switch 2. If the selected voucher has been spent or the Nintendo Switch Online membership expires before collection, the pre-order may be cancelled.
Gold Points can be applied after choosing payment. Nintendo uses all Gold Points available at payment time, up to the purchase price; the buyer cannot choose a smaller number for a pre-order. The cited Americas purchase instructions do not provide a complete currency-per-point rate, so no conversion value should be assumed.

For the Singapore process, a child-account pre-order sends the parent details about the application and later a digital-purchase confirmation; payment is processed on the child’s account, not from the parent’s eShop balance. Purchase Restrictions can block new pre-orders, and a parent can temporarily override them with the parent password.
Enabling Purchase Restrictions after a reservation does not cancel it or stop its scheduled charge. If a child placed a pre-order without permission, cancel that reservation first, then enable the restriction to prevent new ones.

Does Nintendo Store’s 30-day return policy cover eShop purchases?
No. Nintendo Store policies for physical orders and Nintendo eShop digital licenses concern different products and should be handled separately.

Nintendo’s Canadian Store policy allows a return within 30 days after delivery for eligible physical products that are unopened and in their original condition. It excludes digital items, including games, DLC, subscriptions, download codes, and Nintendo eShop cards. In the United Kingdom, physical Store pre-orders can be cancelled through My Orders before becoming returns; digital Store pre-orders have their own cancellation route. UK Nintendo Store says the voluntary right to cancel a digital pre-order lasts until payment takes place, which starts from seven days before release, and says performance does not begin until the product’s release date. The 30-day Canadian boxed-product window is not an eShop refund period.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will Nintendo refund a digital game if I cannot play it because of a technical problem?
The cited refund policies do not set out a technical-defect refund process or guarantee a refund for an inability to play. Describe the problem to Nintendo Support and ask what troubleshooting or account-specific options apply; keep the purchase confirmation and any error details available.
Can I dispute an eShop charge with my bank instead?
The cited Nintendo policy materials provide no chargeback success rate or guidance that a bank dispute will override an eShop refund decision. A payment dispute is handled by the card issuer or payment provider under its own rules, so do not treat it as a guaranteed alternative to Nintendo’s policy.

Do I get a pre-order bonus if I cancel and buy the game later?
Nintendo says pre-order bonus codes are delivered only after payment is processed and the game is pre-loaded. A cancelled reservation does not earn the code, even if you later buy the game normally.
Can I move Nintendo eShop funds to another account or cash them out?
