Nightreign is the game to play now if you want a three-player cooperative hunt against computer-controlled enemies; The Duskbloods is the one to watch if you want a scored, up-to-eight-player match with both PvE and player combat. They share FromSoftware’s action-RPG vocabulary, but they are not interchangeable: Nightreign is available across PlayStation, Xbox, and PC, while The Duskbloods is a Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive now scheduled for 2027.
Important: The Duskbloods’ combat details, Virtue scoring, elimination rules, Sigils, Kin, and map information here come from its August 2026 closed network test and director interviews. On 29 October 2026, FromSoftware delayed the game to 2027 for final adjustments to game rules and balancing, so test details may change. Nightreign information reflects Bandai Namco’s live product details and co-op documentation as of late 2026.
What is the main difference between The Duskbloods and Nightreign?
Nightreign is a cooperative PvE expedition: a squad works together to defeat a Nightlord. The Duskbloods is a PvPvE match: players face enemies and objectives while competing against one another for Virtue and, in the August 2026 test, a final PvP contest. The first is built around teamwork against the game; the second adds player rivalry and scoring to exploration and combat.
| Feature | Elden Ring Nightreign | The Duskbloods |
|---|---|---|
| Multiplayer model | 3-player co-op PvE is the advertised experience; solo play is also supported | PvPvE online matches for up to 8 players; alliances are possible |
| Availability | Released 30 May 2025 on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC | Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive; scheduled for 2027, with no specific date |
| Match objective | Survive the expedition and defeat the Nightlord together | In the August 2026 test, earn Virtue, avoid being culled, and compete in a final contest |
| Death during a field phase | A death during the day costs the character a level | Test players respawned without losing their in-match level |
| Persistent progression | Relics and Murk support future expeditions | Match rewards and character customization connect matches to the hub |
The player counts are not just different-sized versions of the same mode. Nightreign’s three-person squad shares a survival objective, while The Duskbloods’ larger lobby is part of a competition in which cooperation can be temporary and the match can end with players fighting one another.

Is The Duskbloods just Nintendo Nightreign?
No. They share a developer and a repeatable-session structure, but The Duskbloods is not a Nintendo version of Nightreign. Nightreign is a standalone cooperative adventure in the Elden Ring universe. The Duskbloods is an original world and a Switch 2 multiplayer game with player-versus-player competition at its core.
Nightreign sends a small team into Limveld, a land that changes between expeditions, to gather power and hunt a Nightlord. Its central tension is whether the squad can stay alive and reach the shared boss goal. Its eight named Nightfarers have distinct passive abilities, character skills, and ultimate arts, but every Nightfarer can use every weapon type.
The Duskbloods casts players as Bloodsworn, people transformed by special blood and competing for First Blood as humanity approaches twilight. Director Hidetaka Miyazaki described its structure as PvPvE: “At its core, it’s an online multiplayer focused game, with both player vs player and player vs enemy gameplay.” It is not an Elden Ring spin-off, and its supernatural, blood-focused setting does not make it a sequel to Bloodborne either. Miyazaki has described the characters as vampire-like in concept, while emphasizing a romantic use of blood imagery rather than traditional horror monsters.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThere is a useful common thread: both games favor authored characters and short, replayable outings over a blank-slate character builder and one long campaign. But the common format does not erase the core difference in what players are trying to accomplish. One is a team expedition; the other is a competitive match with PvE objectives and player conflict.
How does Duskbloods vs Nightreign multiplayer work?
Nightreign keeps players on the same side against the game. The Duskbloods combines enemy encounters, scoring objectives, and possible alliances with competition between players. That makes Nightreign the clearer choice for a group that wants dependable co-op, and The Duskbloods the more unusual prospect for players who enjoy negotiation and rivalry.
Nightreign: a three-player expedition
Bandai Namco advertises Nightreign as a 3-player co-op experience. Players explore Limveld across two full days, gathering weapons, runes, talismans, and other temporary power before a boss fight ends each of the first two nights. On the third day, the team faces the Nightlord. The Night’s Tide shrinks the safe area; being outside its protection drains health, so exploration involves a choice between searching for useful resources and reaching the next fight in time.
There is no invasion-PvP system in Nightreign’s expedition loop. Players can help a downed teammate by attacking them to revive them. If someone dies during the day, they lose a level; if the entire team is downed during the night, the expedition ends. Bandai Namco summarizes the risk this way: “If a player is downed, swift action is needed: attack them quickly to bring them back to life. If they die during the day, they’ll lose a level. If the entire team is downed during the night, the expedition is over.”

Solo play, including offline solo, is available, but the game is framed around a team of three Nightfarers. Co-op is online-only. Friends use password matchmaking at the Table of Lost Grace: they need to select the same Multiplayer Mode and expedition boss and enter an identical, case-sensitive password. The game’s communication tools are pings, emotes, and gestures, rather than built-in voice chat.
The Duskbloods: a scored match with room for alliances
FromSoftware announced The Duskbloods as a PvPvE game for up to eight online players. Its official pitch is competition among Bloodsworn against both one another and challenging enemies. In the August 2026 network test, a match ran through timed field phases and ended with a player-versus-player finale for those who remained. Players could also pursue objectives and enemy encounters instead of seeking direct fights throughout the match.

Alliances were part of the test’s social strategy. Reports from GameSpot and Polygon describe players cooperating or forming temporary alliances; GameSpot says an alliance prevented accidental friendly fire until the final round. Nintendo’s official copy invites players to “Form transient alliances and bitter rivalries alike.” In the test, alliances did not mean the players had turned the match into a permanent co-op campaign: the final contest dissolved that protection.
Miyazaki has said he is not especially drawn to PvP himself and wanted the game to be satisfying for players like him. He described more than one way to score: “Some players may prefer to earn points by avoiding direct combat and instead engaging in more opportunistic behavior. How you earn points is entirely up to you.” That design intent matters if the phrase “PvPvE” sounds like a battle royale in which the only sensible move is to attack the nearest player. The test offered alternatives, though player conflict remained part of its structure.
There is an important qualification: the network-test rules are not a final specification. Miyazaki said in 2025 that some matches might center on a boss objective, while the August 2026 hands-on reports described a Virtue-scoring format that ended in a PvP finale. FromSoftware’s October 2026 delay statement specifically cited final adjustments to game rules and balancing. Treat the test’s exact match structure as a preview, not a promise that every launch match will follow the same script.
What was the Duskbloods network-test win condition?
In the August 2026 test, players collected Virtue and tried to survive successive culls; the remaining players then fought in a closed final arena. Nightreign has a simpler shared victory condition: defeat the Nightlord. The difference is between winning as a squad and placing well in a match that may force a final showdown.
The test’s field phases lasted around eight minutes each according to IGN, or about eight to ten minutes according to Game Informer. Reports put a full match at roughly 25–30 minutes, but that is journalist timing, not an official session-length specification. The reported cull split is inconsistent: IGN and GameSpot described two players being removed after Phase II and three after Phase III; Game Informer reported three and then two. Both accounts leave three players for the finale, but the precise split should not be treated as settled.
Virtue was the test’s scoring currency, and several activities could earn it. Polygon reported these categories:

- Pledge: swear to a Blood Pledge pillar at a ritual site. Another Bloodsworn could overwrite the pledge.
- Repulsion: defeat field bosses called Great Foes and major bosses called Trespassers, which could be fought cooperatively.
- Flame: light a flame in the skull of a corpse on a throne; the first Bloodsworn to do so received it.
- Commendation: gain Virtue through Bloodfang enemy kills and Collector item collection, with rarer items worth more.
- Other: complete Sigil objectives or find random items that grant Virtue.
Redstones and Goldstones could increase Sword or Pledge rewards. Ritual Sites opened in the later portions of Phases II and III and worked like king-of-the-hill points: a capture took about ten seconds of holding an action, leaving the player exposed. Those sites made direct PvP useful for scoring, but they were not the only route to points.
The test also included random events that altered where players went or what they did. Polygon listed Nearle Storm, which teleported Bloodsworn, and Nearle Arrow, which swapped their positions; Star Fragment, where players held falling fragments until a phase ended; Prowling Sword Lion, which brought zeppelin airstrikes via a Transmitter; Dusk’s Toll, which involved ringing a bell for Virtue; and Bloodsac Gala, a hunt for Bloodsacs that granted Powers of Blood. Miyazaki also described a trailer event in which a giant stone face in the sky changes the environment and match rewards. These are examples of the test’s variety, not confirmed launch content.
How do combat and movement compare?
Nightreign retains a more familiar Elden Ring-like rhythm of stamina-based melee combat and character skills. The Duskbloods adds much more aerial movement, ranged options, and blood-powered abilities, based on the August 2026 test. Both have light and heavy attacks, blocking, rolling, lock-on, and stamina management; neither is simply a traditional role-playing game with a different player count.

Nightreign’s weapon freedom and character kits
Nightfarer identity comes from a character’s passive ability, skill, and ultimate art rather than weapon-stat restrictions. Bandai Namco’s examples show how those kits shape a run: Wylder is a melee generalist with a grappling hook and explosive iron spikes; Guardian uses a greatshield, a Whirlwind skill, and Wings of Salvation to help allies; Ironeye is a marksman with a Marking skill and Single Shot art. Duchess can replay recent damage with Restage and conceal the team with Finale. Raider is a poise-focused bruiser, while Recluse mixes elemental attributes and can help allies recover HP and FP from branded foes with Soulblood Song.
Nightreign changes traversal from the base Elden Ring formula. Secondary descriptions of the live game note wall-running, spirit springs, a spectral hawk glide, and Surge Sprint; there is no Torrent and no fall damage. A full expedition is commonly timed at roughly 30–45 minutes, but Bandai Namco does not publish a minute-length spec. The more firmly grounded description is its three-day structure, with exploration phases punctuated by boss fights.
The Duskbloods’ vertical movement and blood abilities
Miyazaki described the Bloodsworn as having superhuman abilities from special blood, with actions more dramatic than those in previous FromSoftware games. He also said sprinting, super jumps, and double jumps were meant to feel dynamic and stress-free, alongside each character’s weapons and abilities. The August 2026 reports describe a more vertical moveset than Nightreign’s: an especially powerful first jump, air dashes, and multiple jumps. Sources disagree on whether the test allowed three jumps or four, so there is no single count to present as definitive. Test reports also described infinite sprint and no fall damage.
The combat cadence was compared by IGN with Bloodborne or Nightreign rather than Sekiro. A player can block and attempt a perfectly timed parry; a Howl in the parry window staggers an enemy. The player can then bite the staggered enemy’s neck to deal heavy damage and recover health. On weaker enemies, the bite can turn the target into a follower. Game Informer and Polygon also described the sequence as Howl followed by drinking blood. Every character has some kind of ranged attack, according to Miyazaki, fitting the game’s use of firearms as well as melee weapons.
The six Bloodsworn available in the test showed how varied that can be: Albert paired dual sabers with an SMG; Bloodhand Jan used an axe and fire; Senator Samir Patres wielded a rapier, summoned spectral birds, and could transform into a dinosaur; Trang Lanh used a chakram, cloak, and giant snake; Sniper Layla combined a rifle and insect-based warping with a chest-mounted Gatling weapon; and Zork brought a diving suit, cable, speargun, jetpack rush, and missiles. This was the test roster, not a locked launch list. Miyazaki said “over a dozen characters” in April 2025, while August 2026 coverage described six in the test and estimates of roughly ten or more at launch. The launch number remains unconfirmed.

One reported test-build weakness was camera and lock-on control during fast airborne PvP, flagged by IGN. That is a useful caveat for players imagining that the vertical movement will automatically make every duel readable, but it is not evidence of how the final game will perform.
How does progression work in each game?
Nightreign resets temporary power after each expedition but lets players build a persistent Relic collection. The Duskbloods test paired in-match leveling with rewards and story-linked customization between matches. Nightreign’s progression is about preparing a stronger next run; The Duskbloods’ layers include both match standings and the evolving identity of a Bloodsworn.
Nightreign: level up during the run, keep Relics between runs
An expedition begins at level 1. Players gather runes and equipment, then level up during that run before the Nightlord fight. The power acquired in the field is temporary, so a failed or finished expedition does not preserve its weapons and temporary build in the same way a conventional campaign might. Live-game writeups describe a level-15 run cap; Bandai Namco’s official material confirms the day-death level loss, while the cap is reported by secondary sources.
Between expeditions, players spend Murk at Roundtable Hold and equip Relics that change starting conditions or shape future builds. Relics are earned after runs in live-game accounts, whether a player wins or loses. The result is a loop in which an expedition can fail yet still contribute to long-term preparation. Remembrance missions provide personal character-story progression, but they can affect matchmaking: if more than one player in a group is advancing a personal Remembrance at once, matchmaking may be blocked.

The Duskbloods: match levels, hub rewards, and blood history
In the August test, killing enemies raised a Bloodsworn’s level, which unlocked health, stamina, and character abilities. IGN observed that a new special ability unlocked at level 12, and players who spent time leveling could reach roughly level 17–20 by the final phase. Those figures describe a preview match, not an official balance target. The test also gave players two health flasks by default; Game Informer reported a map item that could increase the flask count.
Unlike Nightreign, death in the Duskbloods field phases did not remove an in-match level in the test. Players respawned in a selected map sector. In-match level and match standing were separate: leveling could improve combat capability, while Virtue determined who was at risk of being culled in the test format.
After a match, Miyazaki said players receive some sort of reward whether they win or lose, then use it to customize their character and continue the cycle. Hands-on reports called the hub House of Night. The test showed a training dummy, customization, and locked story areas. A persistent customization layer called “blood history and fate” also connects character choices to lore: Miyazaki said customization items reveal fragments of information about the world and its unfolding story.
Personal objectives add another layer on top of the match goal. Miyazaki described a Destined Rivals role that marks another player to find and defeat, and a Destined Companion role focused on locating and bonding with a marked player. Test coverage reported additional Sigils such as Sworn Enemy, Old Friend, Eye of Moralis or Heretic, and Sigil of Love, which involved proposing with a “Flowers for You” emote. These names and mechanics were still being refined, so the test’s Sigil list should not be read as a final roster of objectives.

Play Nightreign if you want a cooperative FromSoftware game now, especially with two friends on the same platform family. Wait for The Duskbloods if you have access to a Switch 2, want a more social and competitive match structure, and are comfortable waiting until 2027 for its final rules. If your only platform is PlayStation, Xbox, or PC, The Duskbloods is not a game you can buy on that system; it is a Switch 2 exclusive.
- Choose Nightreign for a shared PvE objective, a three-person team, Elden Ring-universe enemies and combat, and persistent Relics that build a library for future runs. It is the practical option if you want to play this kind of game now.
- Wait for The Duskbloods if the appeal is an eight-player match where exploration, enemy fights, scoring, temporary alliances, and player rivalries can all matter. Its test emphasized vertical movement and more unusual character kits, but its launch window is 2027 and its rules remain subject to adjustment.
- Do not choose based on the word “co-op” alone. Nightreign is co-op first. The Duskbloods can include cooperation, but its test structure made player competition central and included a PvP finale.
Neither game has an official minute-length session specification. Journalist timings put a Duskbloods test match at about 25–30 minutes; Nightreign is structured as a three-day expedition and is commonly described in secondary timing as around 30–45 minutes. Treat those as observations, not guaranteed session lengths.
When is The Duskbloods coming out, and what is available now?
The Duskbloods is scheduled for 2027 on Nintendo Switch 2, with no official calendar date. Elden Ring Nightreign is available now on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC. FromSoftware announced the delay on 29 October 2026, moving the game from its original 2026 window.
FromSoftware said: “While development of ‘The Duskbloods’ is at the final adjustment stage, we have made the decision to move the launch window to 2027.” It said the network test showed interest in combat, strategic depth, and player expression, and that extra time would allow final adjustments to rules and balancing. Although the Nintendo US eShop product field still showed 2026 when the delay was announced, the official delay statement and the Japanese product site’s 2027 listing are the current information to use. The Japanese listing identifies Switch 2 as the platform and FromSoftware as developer.

Nightreign is the only currently purchasable game in this comparison. No official Duskbloods price, pre-order date, or final launch roster is established by the available information. There is also no official sales comparison or review-aggregate comparison to make while The Duskbloods remains unreleased. Its three planned launch maps were reported in August 2026 coverage, but the network test used one map, whose name appears with several spellings in reports: Lowanro, Lawanro, or Lowarno City.
Are these signs that FromSoftware is moving to multiplayer-only games?
No. Miyazaki has explicitly said that The Duskbloods does not signal a company-wide move to multiplayer-only development. In Nintendo’s Creator’s Voice interview, he said, “this doesn’t mean that we as a company have decided to shift to a more multiplayer-focused direction with titles going forward.” He added, “We still intend to actively develop single player focused games such as this that embrace our more traditional style.”
The Duskbloods has been in development since 2021, initially as a small-team project for the original Switch before Nintendo moved it to Switch 2. Miyazaki said the newer hardware’s online features allowed the team to stay close to its original vision. Nightreign’s release alongside the project is not evidence that every future FromSoftware game will use online multiplayer.
The two games therefore answer different preferences rather than representing a simple upgrade path. Nightreign offers an available, cooperative expedition with a team boss goal. The Duskbloods is a separate, unreleased project whose test combined PvE, scoring choices, alliances, and player rivalry. Its 2027 date and rule changes mean it is best treated as an option to watch rather than a direct substitute for a game you can play today.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can PS4 and PS5 players play Nightreign together?
Yes. Nightreign supports cross-generation play within a platform family, so PS4 and PS5 players can play together; Xbox One and Xbox Series players can also share a family. PlayStation, Xbox, and PC do not crossplay with one another.
Why can’t my Nightreign group start matchmaking during a Remembrance?
A personal Remembrance mission can prevent matchmaking when more than one player in the group is progressing a Remembrance at the same time. Try having only one player advance that character mission, or return to the regular expedition flow before matching.
Does The Duskbloods support cloud save backup?
The product information reported in 2026 says The Duskbloods does not support Save Data Cloud backup. That is separate from online matchmaking, which requires Nintendo Switch Online.
Can Nightreign players use voice chat in the game?
The in-game communication options are pings, emotes, and gestures. The documented friends workflow is password matchmaking rather than a built-in voice-chat system.
