NHRA drag racing has four professional categories—Top Fuel, Funny Car, Pro Stock and Pro Stock Motorcycle—but those are only a small part of the program. NHRA’s official overview describes more than 200 classes grouped into 15 eliminators. The easiest way to understand them is to look at both the vehicle rules and the race format: some cars race heads-up, some use handicap starts, and bracket racers use dial-ins.
How NHRA classes and race formats fit together
A class is a rules package, not necessarily a single type of vehicle or a professional ranking. NHRA says eligibility can depend on vehicle type, engine size, weight, permitted modifications and aerodynamics. Its official class overview groups classes into three broad ways of racing:
- Heads-up: Both competitors start together. This applies to categories including Top Fuel, Funny Car, Pro Stock, Pro Stock Motorcycle, Top Alcohol Dragster, Top Alcohol Funny Car, Super Comp, Super Gas, Super Street and Pro Mod.
- Handicap starts: Competitors in different classes can receive adjusted starts. NHRA identifies Comp, Super Stock and Stock as handicap-start groups.
- Bracket-style: Each driver selects a dial-in time, and the start is adjusted accordingly. Running quicker than the dial-in is a breakout. Top Dragster and Top Sportsman use this format.
Elapsed times and speeds are useful descriptions, but they are not a fair ranking across all classes: the vehicles, rules and race formats differ.
The four professional NHRA categories

The performance and specification figures above are general descriptions in NHRA’s class overview, not a complete rulebook or a guarantee for a particular run. For Top Fuel versus Funny Car, the quickest visual distinction is the vehicle: Top Fuel is an exposed dragster, while Funny Car wraps a similar basic nitro concept in a coupe-like body and places the driver behind the engine.

What is changing in Pro Stock?
NHRA announced that Pro Stock rules will change for the 2027 season: hood scoops will return, and one forward-facing throttle body will be replaced by two top-mounted, four-barrel-style throttle bodies. Electronic fuel injection remains. This is an announced 2027 change, not the 2026 setup. NHRA’s announcement includes an explanation from Director of Engineering Clinton Snead: “The general feeling among competitors and stakeholders is the current low/front air-entry setup makes the engines more difficult to tune and creates more variation from car to car than it should.” See NHRA’s 2027 Pro Stock announcement.
Major classes beyond the professional four
Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car
These classes have dragster and Funny Car forms that resemble their nitro counterparts, but their power combinations differ. NHRA’s overview describes Top Alcohol Dragster combinations using supercharged methanol or injected nitromethane, while its Top Alcohol Funny Car description features methanol and a three-speed transmission. In November 2025, NHRA announced a supercharged nitromethane combination for both categories in 2026, in addition to traditional options, and 24 combined events across the Mission Foods and Lucas Oil series. Pro Mod
Pro Mod is a doorslammer category with a wide variety of late-model and classic body styles. NHRA’s 2026 series feature describes combinations using superchargers, turbochargers or nitrous oxide. The cars can look and work quite differently while competing in the same broad category. See NHRA’s 2026 Pro Mod feature.
Comp, Super Stock and Stock
These are multi-class groups that use handicap starts, with class indexes and handicaps helping unlike combinations compete. Comp includes a particularly broad range of vehicles and engines, from dragsters, altereds and roadsters to coupes, sedans, sport compacts and trucks. Super Stock permits substantial modification while retaining specified original components. Stock keeps tighter limits on engine and body changes and preserves more of the factory configuration.

Super Comp, Super Gas and Super Street
These are heads-up index categories: competitors race toward a class performance target and must avoid running quicker than the applicable index, which would be a breakout. NHRA’s overview lists indexes of 8.90 seconds for Super Comp, 9.90 for Super Gas and 10.90 for Super Street. Super Comp is primarily dragsters; Super Gas is mainly full-bodied cars and roadsters; Super Street requires full-bodied cars. Indexes are rule details that can change, so check NHRA’s current rulebook for the season you are following.
Top Dragster and Top Sportsman
These are fast bracket categories. Top Dragster uses open-wheel entries; Top Sportsman uses full-bodied cars. Drivers choose dial-ins, then race with adjusted starts and the breakout rule. That lets vehicles with different expected elapsed times compete against one another.

Which NHRA class is the fastest?
Top Fuel is commonly the headline answer when “fastest” means a combination of extraordinary acceleration and speed: NHRA’s general overview lists under 3.7 seconds and over 330 mph. Funny Cars are also described above 330 mph, with elapsed times in the 3.8-second range. These are descriptive figures, not a current record comparison or a claim that every pass reaches those numbers. A record answer would need to specify the measure, event, distance and date.

Pro Stock Motorcycle was announced for 14 events plus a separate Sonoma All-Star Callout.
