A last-generation flagship is usually the better value when it costs meaningfully less than the new model for the same storage and condition, has enough software support left for your planned ownership, and the new phone’s upgrades do not solve a problem you care about. Choose the newer phone when the price gap is small or a specific improvement is worth paying for.
How to compare value fairly
Compare what you would actually pay for each phone on the same day and in the same market—not an old launch price against a current sale. Match storage, condition, seller type, unlocked or carrier status, warranty, and taxes. Include any promotion or trade-in only if you qualify and would genuinely use it.
- Use equivalent configurations: a lower price may simply reflect less storage or a different model variant.
- Check purchase protections: confirm the seller, warranty, return terms, condition, and compatibility with your region and mobile network.
- Assess the feature gap: identify the particular upgrade you would use, rather than assuming a newer generation is automatically better.
- Check support for the exact model: compare its official software and security-support commitment with how long you intend to keep it.
A lower sticker price is not enough by itself. A shorter remaining support period, uncertain condition, or weaker return protection can reduce the older phone’s advantage.
When the last-generation flagship is the better buy
The older flagship is compelling when the savings are substantial at matched storage and condition, it will remain supported throughout your expected ownership, and its hardware already meets your needs. If the new generation mainly offers refinements you would rarely notice, paying extra may not improve your day-to-day experience.

There is no reliable percentage by which last-generation phones are generally better value: the answer depends on the specific pair, current prices, and buyer. Resale value also varies by model and market, so do not assume it will make up for a higher purchase price.
When the new phone is worth the premium
Paying more for the current generation can make sense if the price difference is small or an upgrade matters to you enough to justify it. That might be a feature you will use regularly, improved charging that fits your routine, or a capability absent from the previous model. Weigh the practical benefit against the actual price gap, not the generation name.

Do not mistake launch prices for today’s deal
TechRadar records US 256GB launch prices of $1,299.99 for the S26 Ultra and $1,299 for the S25 Ultra, and UK 256GB launch prices of £1,279 and £1,249, respectively. These are launch-price facts, not current offers; retailer prices on the comparison page can change. Check current prices in your own market before deciding.
Storage changes can distort a comparison
The base Galaxy S26 and S25 illustrate why storage must match. Android Authority’s 2026 guide reports a US starting price of $900 for the 256GB S26, compared with a $850 US launch price for the 256GB S25. It also reports that the 128GB S25 launched at $800 and cites an approximately $700 Amazon listing for a global S25 model when the guide was written. That listing is a dated snapshot, not a verified current offer, and it should not be compared as though it were the same configuration and market as the S26 price.

Before choosing an older flagship, find the manufacturer’s support commitment for that exact model and region, then determine whether the remaining period covers your intended use. Brand-wide promises do not establish an individual phone’s support end date. The editorial discussion in Android Authority’s analysis of last-generation phones likewise highlights that update support depends on the phone rather than the brand alone.

Best Value
Also consider how long you will keep the device and whether you expect to resell it. Purchase savings can be less attractive if support ends too soon for your plans, while resale value varies by model and market and cannot be assumed to erase the difference.
A practical decision rule
- Find same-day prices for both models in your market, with the same storage, condition, seller category, and carrier status. Compare final cost after tax and any promotion or trade-in you can actually use.
- Verify protection and compatibility for the specific listing: seller reputation, warranty, return rights, condition, region, and network support.
- Check support for each exact model against the number of years you expect to own it.
- Name the upgrade you would use. If the new phone’s improvements do not matter to you and the older model is supported long enough, the older flagship may be the better value. If the upgrade is important or the price gap is narrow, the new phone may justify its premium.
As iTechGuides’ advice on buying last year’s flagship also emphasizes, compare like with like—including storage, condition, seller, warranty, and purchase terms—rather than choosing by generation alone.
