How do I reset NetherSX2 to a clean baseline?
Use the default settings as your starting point, especially after an update. The NetherSX2 FAQ says defaults tend to work best for the majority of games and recommends resetting settings if performance becomes poor after an update.

Keep renderer choices per game
If one title works better with Vulkan and another with OpenGL, save the choice per game when the emulator allows it. That avoids trading a fix for one title against compatibility in the rest of your library. If switching renderers produces new graphical problems, return to the previous renderer rather than stacking more changes on top. Renderer selection is also a reason not to copy a preset from a different phone: the same game can behave differently on Adreno, Mali, and PowerVR graphics hardware.

Which graphics settings reduce the workload most?
Lower internal resolution to 1x first, then temporarily remove optional visual enhancements. Those changes reduce the graphics workload without immediately changing CPU timing or audio behavior, making them a sensible first test for both slow performance and heat-related decline.
Internal resolution
Higher internal resolution draws the game above its native baseline, but it is not a free upgrade and does not work well with every game. Android Authority’s guide to AetherSX2 describes resolution scaling from 1x upward and notes that compatibility varies. For diagnosis, use 1x; once performance is stable, raise resolution gradually and keep the highest setting that remains smooth in demanding scenes. Test a complete area rather than assuming a setting that works in an empty room will hold during combat or a busy cutscene.
Optional enhancements
Temporarily disable texture packs, widescreen enhancements, and other nonessential visual changes while isolating a problem. If the slowdown stops, re-enable those features one at a time. This helps identify which addition is costly or incompatible instead of assuming the emulator or phone has a single universal fault. Texture packs can increase memory and graphics work, while widescreen changes can expose title-specific rendering issues; the safe approach is to restore each enhancement only after the unmodified game is stable.
When should I use speedhacks or CPU options?
Only try CPU speedhacks after testing the default configuration and a low graphics workload. The NetherSX2 FAQ says a negative EE Cycle Rate and positive EE Cycle Skip can improve performance in some cases, but they can also break games or make them run slower than expected.

Test one value change at a time on a per-game profile. Check more than the scene where the slowdown first appeared: a speed increase accompanied by broken behavior is not a useful fix. If a change makes performance or compatibility worse, restore the default rather than layering on additional timing changes. Watch for gameplay logic, animation, physics, and sound problems, not just the speed counter.
Multi-threaded VU1 and affinity
Multi-threaded VU1 is not a universal performance switch. Android Authority reports it can require at least three big CPU cores and may be slower on phones with only two big cores. The NetherSX2 FAQ also treats affinity choices as device- and game-dependent. If the phone lacks the relevant CPU capacity, enabling a threading option can be counterproductive rather than helpful. Affinity experiments should therefore be compared on the same scene and removed if they increase heat, introduce instability, or make a previously smooth title slower.
What audio setting should I try?
Audio changes are compatibility experiments, not a shortcut for every frame-rate problem. Async Mix may help some games compared with Timestretch, but the NetherSX2 FAQ warns that it is not compatible with all games.

- Play through dialogue, music, and a busy gameplay section.
- If audio becomes unstable, restore the default mode and reduce the graphics workload instead.
When audio crackle appears together with a gradual slowdown, treat thermal pressure as another possibility. AOSP documentation says severe thermal mitigation can produce audio jitter as well as display jank, so changing audio alone may not solve a sustained-load problem.
How can I tell whether heat is causing the slowdown?
A game that begins smoothly and loses speed as the phone heats up may be encountering thermal pressure. That is an inference from the timing of the symptom, not a diagnosis that applies to every phone; Android’s thermal documentation explains that devices can reduce workload as they approach unsafe thermal states.
Google’s Android game-development documentation says a game can avoid being throttled near an unsafe thermal state by decreasing workload through available parameters, and describes thermal headroom as an indication of how close the current workload is to throttling. Android’s thermal framework documents a progression from no throttling through light, moderate, severe, critical, emergency, and shutdown states. AOSP notes that severe mitigation can cause side effects including display jank and audio jitter. These details make heat a plausible explanation when slowdowns and audio or frame-pacing problems emerge during sustained play, but they do not establish one universal temperature cutoff for every Android device.
Reduce sustained load in this order
- Set internal resolution to 1x. This removes a major optional graphics workload.
- Disable texture packs and other enhancements. Add them back only after a stable baseline is established.
- Use the phone’s default power mode for a longer session rather than assuming the most aggressive mode will stay faster.
- Close unnecessary background workloads and retest after the phone has cooled.
- Accept a lower visual workload or frame target if performance still collapses during sustained play.
A performance mode is a trade-off, not a cure. Android Authority’s guide says it can improve performance at the expense of battery life and temperature, and that higher temperatures can lead to faster throttling. Default power mode may therefore produce a better sustained session than a short-lived peak-speed setting. Judge the result over a complete session, not only during the first few minutes.
What settings help with battery drain?
Reduce the emulator’s workload rather than expecting a setting to guarantee a particular runtime. Start with 1x resolution, remove optional enhancements, and use default power mode for sustained play; do not assume that forcing a higher performance profile will improve battery life or prevent slowdowns.

Close background apps and services that are not needed for the session, then compare the same game section after the phone cools. If a renderer or download-mode change reduces work in a particular title, it may also reduce power use, but that result is device- and game-specific. Conversely, a setting that raises short-term speed can increase temperature and accelerate throttling, producing worse sustained performance and more battery use.
There is no reliable source-backed average battery-drain figure for Android PS2 emulation, no universal safe temperature for all phones, and no guaranteed frame-rate gain for a particular setting. Will NetherSX2 run well on my Android phone?
NetherSX2’s repository lists Android 8.0 or newer, an ARM64 or x86_64 processor, and at least 2 GB of RAM as baseline requirements; it recommends 4 GB or more. Meeting these requirements does not guarantee that demanding games will run well.
The NetherSX2 FAQ recommends a device roughly equivalent to Snapdragon 845, with four large Cortex-A75-level cores, as a starting point. It says phones with Mali or PowerVR GPUs can run the app but generally perform worse than Adreno devices, and that slower phones may struggle especially with heavier titles. Treat this as a rough project guideline, not a promise of compatibility or performance for every game. A phone can meet the software baseline and still need 1x resolution, conservative settings, or a lower frame target for a demanding title.

Compare sustained performance rather than the first five minutes. Use the same game, save point, renderer, resolution, and scene, then test long enough for the device to warm up. Record whether the image remains correct, whether audio stays stable, and whether battery use or heat becomes uncomfortable.
Also compare game-specific compatibility, GPU behavior, and whether the setting can be safely global. A renderer or speedhack that helps one title may hurt another, while a phone with more large CPU cores may benefit from multi-threaded VU1 where a two-big-core phone does not. If recommending a controller, include control comfort and input latency as separate considerations; a controller improves playability but does not change emulation speed or thermal load.
Does NetherSX2 include the BIOS or PS2 games?
No. The NetherSX2 repository says users must legally provide their own PS2 BIOS, and the FAQ says the emulator should be used with games they own and have dumped from disc. The emulator itself does not include those files.
Is AetherSX2 still the current option?
AetherSX2 is legacy context rather than an actively maintained recommendation. Android Authority’s update dated May 7, 2025 says it is no longer available on Google Play or under active development and recommends NetherSX2, an updated version from the same emulator lineage without the ads.
Is a controller worth adding?
