Netflix is a free Microsoft Store app on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, but viewing still requires a paid Netflix membership. From the console Home screen, open Microsoft Store, find Netflix under Apps (or use Search), choose Install, then launch it and select Member Sign In. Original Xbox One streams Netflix up to 1080p; Xbox One S, Xbox One X, Xbox Series S, and Xbox Series X can reach 4K Ultra HD, HDR, and Dolby Vision when your plan, title, network, television, HDMI chain, and console settings all qualify.

What do you need before installing Netflix on Xbox?

Have these items ready before opening the Store:

  • An Xbox One, Xbox One S, Xbox One X, Xbox Series S, or Xbox Series X. Netflix availability is limited to regions where both Netflix and Xbox Live service are offered.
  • An Xbox network (Xbox LIVE) account already signed in on the console. Netflix lists this as a prerequisite for using the app and Store.
  • A Netflix membership. The application costs nothing to download, but it does not provide access without an active plan.
  • A broadband connection. Netflix recommends at least 3 Mbps for 720p HD, 5 Mbps for 1080p Full HD, and 15 Mbps for 4K Ultra HD (Netflix Help Center, accessed October 29, 2026).
  • For 4K or HDR, a compatible television, an HDMI port with HDCP 2.2 or later, and suitable Premium High Speed or Ultra High Speed HDMI cabling.

Plan features and prices vary by country. Check netflix.com/changeplan for the plans offered to your account rather than relying on a price quoted for another market.

How do I install Netflix on Xbox Series X or Series S?

Series X and Series S use the same Microsoft Store route as Xbox One.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Start on the Xbox Home screen and scroll right to Store.
  2. Open the Apps section and select Netflix. If it is not visible, choose Search all apps, type Netflix, and open the official app listing.
  3. Select Install. The download is free and is saved to the console.
  4. When installation finishes, choose Launch. You can also reopen it later from your installed apps.
  5. Choose Member Sign In, enter your Netflix email address and password, and select Sign In.

If the listing does not appear, confirm that the Xbox is connected to the internet, the Xbox profile is signed in, and your region supports both services. A Series console cannot make Netflix available in a country where Netflix or Xbox Live is unavailable.

How do I install Netflix on Xbox One?

On every Xbox One model, the current official path is Home → Store → Apps → Netflix → Install → Launch.

  1. From Home, scroll right and open Store.
  2. In Apps, select Netflix. Use Search all apps if you need to find it by name.
  3. Choose Install and wait for the download to complete.
  4. Select Launch, then choose Member Sign In.
  5. Enter the Netflix account email and password and select Sign In.

After the first setup, open Netflix from the Home screen or from My games & apps → Apps. The app itself is free; the subscription is billed by Netflix.

How do I sign in, choose a profile, and start watching?

After signing in, select the profile you want to use. Netflix loads personalized rows and genres for that profile; highlight a title and press the confirmation button to play.

  • Search: press Y on the Xbox controller. Netflix supports searches by title, genre, language, and terms such as UHD or Atmos.
  • Netflix menu: press B. This opens profile switching, the Kids area, settings, and sign-out controls.
  • Quality labels: an Ultra HD, HDR, Dolby Vision, or Dolby Atmos badge appears only when that title and playback setup support the format.

To check a network from the app, open the Netflix home screen, press Back to open the menu, choose your profile or Get Help, and select Check your Network. You can also check the connection from another device at fast.com.

Which Xbox models support 1080p, 4K, HDR, and Dolby Vision?

Netflix’s device list—not third-party compatibility lists—determines the maximum stream. The original Xbox One is limited to 1080p, while the S and X revisions and both Series consoles can stream Ultra HD when the rest of the chain qualifies.

Netflix’s Xbox guidance specifically names Xbox One S, Xbox One X, Xbox Series S, and Xbox Series X for Ultra HD and HDR/Dolby Vision playback. A common claim that only Series X|S can stream 4K is incorrect. The original Xbox One remains a 1080p device for Netflix.

What Netflix plan is needed for 4K or HDR on Xbox?

You need a plan that includes Ultra HD for 4K, HDR, and Netflix spatial audio. Netflix’s feature table lists Premium with 4K Ultra HD + HDR, four supported devices at once, downloads on six devices, and spatial audio. Standard is listed at 1080p Full HD on two devices with downloads on two; Basic is one device at 720p HD; Mobile is one phone or tablet at 480p SD.

Standard 1080p Full HD; two devices at once Downloads on two devices
Basic 720p HD; one device Downloads are not listed in the supplied feature table
Mobile 480p SD; one phone or tablet Not a television or console plan

Exact plan names, advertising tiers, availability, and prices differ by country. Netflix’s plan page resolved to a Bangladesh view during the October 2026 check, so its dollar amounts should not be treated as United States prices. Use netflix.com/changeplan to see the options for your account.

How do I get 4K Netflix working on Xbox?

All parts of the signal path must support the requested format: Netflix plan, title, console, television, HDMI port, cable, receiver, network, and playback setting.

  1. Confirm the console model. Use Xbox One S, Xbox One X, Xbox Series S, or Xbox Series X for Netflix Ultra HD. The original Xbox One tops out at 1080p.
  2. Use an Ultra HD plan. Select a Netflix plan that includes 4K Ultra HD and HDR.
  3. Check the television. Netflix specifies a 2015-or-newer Ultra HD TV with the Netflix app capable of 60 Hz Ultra HD playback. The TV is the display device even though the Xbox supplies the stream.
  4. Use the right HDMI path. Connect the Xbox to an HDMI port marked for HDCP 2.2 or later, usually HDMI 1. If an AV receiver or soundbar sits between the console and TV, it must also support 4K or HDR. Use Premium High Speed or Ultra High Speed HDMI cable for a Premium-plan setup.
  5. Enable the console’s 4K output. In Xbox display settings, select a resolution and television configuration that permit 4K video. Netflix cannot output 4K when the console is configured for a lower capability.
  6. Set Netflix playback quality. On the Netflix website, open Account → Profile & Parental Controls → Playback Settings and set Data usage per screen to High or Auto. Netflix lists High or Auto for both 1080p and 4K; 720p can use Medium, High, or Auto.
  7. Meet the speed floor. Netflix lists 15 Mbps or higher for Ultra HD. A wired Ethernet connection is generally the steadier way to sustain that rate; both Series consoles include gigabit Ethernet as well as 802.11ac Wi-Fi.

Use Netflix labels to verify the result. Resolution examples Netflix names include Black Island, 1922, After Maria, and Birders. HDR examples include Our Planet, Lost in Space, and The Sea Beast. A title must carry the relevant label; changing the console output alone does not convert an HD title to 4K.

How do I enable HDR, Dolby Vision, and Dolby Atmos?

HDR and Dolby Vision

HDR playback requires an Xbox model on Netflix’s HDR list (One S, One X, Series S, or Series X), a Netflix plan that supports HDR, an HDR-capable television, and an HDMI port with HDCP 2.2 or later. The TV must support Dolby Vision, HDR10, or HDR10+ as applicable, the connection must sustain at least 15 Mbps, and Netflix playback quality must be set to High.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Dolby Atmos

Atmos is available only on selected shows and movies, and not every episode, season, or language track of an Atmos title includes it. You need an Ultra HD-capable Netflix plan, a compatible Xbox, an Atmos-capable sound system, and Netflix quality set to High or Auto. Netflix recommends at least 3 Mbps for Atmos playback and displays a Dolby Atmos icon when the soundtrack is available.

Microsoft lists Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision media streaming on Xbox One, One S, One X, and Xbox Series X|S. For Netflix’s narrower picture-format qualification, use the Netflix model list above and verify that every receiver, cable, port, and display in the chain supports the format.

Do I need Xbox Live Gold or Game Pass to watch Netflix?

Netflix documents a signed-in Xbox LIVE/Xbox network account, not a paid multiplayer subscription, as the console prerequisite. Netflix viewing is a separate service from Game Pass; having Game Pass does not include a Netflix membership. If the Store or app asks you to sign in, use the free Xbox account associated with the console, then authenticate separately with your Netflix account.

Can I download Netflix shows on Xbox for offline viewing?

No. Netflix’s official downloads are intended for phones, tablets, and some computers. Televisions, streaming sticks, game consoles, and cable boxes can play Netflix but do not keep downloadable episodes for offline playback. Third-party tools that copy Netflix streams to MP4 or USB are not an official Netflix method and should not be used as a substitute.

How do I sign out of Netflix on Xbox?

  1. Open Netflix and press Back to open the menu.
  2. Select Get Help, then choose Sign out and confirm with Yes. Depending on the app layout, Get Help may be under a profile icon at the top or at the bottom of a left-side menu.
  3. If an error screen is displayed, choose More Details, then Sign out or Reset.

If Get Help and Sign out are missing, press this controller sequence: Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, Up, Up, Up, Up. Select Sign out, Reset, or Deactivate from the screen that appears. To disconnect the membership from every associated Gamertag, use Netflix’s device-disconnect tool on its website.

Why is Netflix not working on my Xbox?

Work through the least disruptive checks first. Your Netflix account, viewing history, and profiles remain stored online when you reinstall the app.

  1. Check service status. Look for a Netflix or Xbox service interruption before changing console settings.
  2. Check speed. Run a test at fast.com. For 4K, look for a stable 15 Mbps or higher result, and use Ethernet if Wi-Fi fluctuates.
  3. Restart the network. Restart the router, then reconnect the Xbox.
  4. Power-cycle the console. Hold the console power button for about 10 seconds, unplug it for 30 seconds, reconnect power, and start it again.
  5. Quit Netflix completely. Highlight the Netflix tile on Home, press the Menu button, choose Quit, and relaunch.
  6. Update Xbox software. Open Guide → Profile & system → Settings → System → Updates and install any available update.
  7. Reinstall Netflix. Uninstall the app, return to Microsoft Store, and install it again. This removes the local app package, not your Netflix cloud account or history.
  8. Sign out and back in. Use the official Get Help path above, then authenticate again.

If picture quality remains below the plan’s capability after checking the plan, speed, cables, ports, and settings, Netflix advises contacting the device manufacturer. A television, receiver, or HDMI port that lacks the required standard can limit the entire chain.

What happens if I use Netflix on an Xbox in another home?

Netflix associates an account with a household, defined as devices connected to the internet at the main residence where you watch. An Xbox at a second home or another household can trigger a household check. Netflix says accounts cannot be shared outside the household; people outside it can be added as Extra Members when the owner has an eligible Standard or Premium plan.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Extra Members must be in the same country as the account owner, and the owner’s plan requirements apply. Do not try to bypass household checks with unofficial workarounds; use Netflix’s household or Extra Member options.

Is Xbox 360 still an option for Netflix?

Microsoft retired the Xbox 360 Store on July 29, 2024, and Netflix states that new Netflix app downloads are not supported. Netflix’s help material still contains an older Dashboard → Apps → Netflix → Sign In path, but it does not promise that an already-installed copy will continue streaming in 2026. For a supported installation, move to Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S rather than relying on a leftover Xbox 360 app.

Which Xbox is the practical Netflix choice?

If you already own an Xbox One S or One X, it remains a Netflix 4K-capable console. Series S is the digital-only, lower-cost hardware approach that Microsoft markets for 4K streaming while targeting 1440p gaming. Series X adds true 4K gaming hardware, an optical drive on disc models, HDMI 2.1, and the same Netflix 4K, HDR, Dolby Vision, and Atmos capability when the rest of the setup qualifies.

Microsoft’s Xbox Series X product page listed these prices on October 29, 2026: 1TB Carbon Black at $799.99, 1TB Digital Edition at $749.99, 2TB Galaxy Black Special Edition at $799.99, and X25 Limited Edition at $899.99. Stock and retailer pricing change, and the Microsoft Store listing was sold out when checked. These are console prices, not Netflix subscription prices.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should you remember?

  • Install Netflix free from Microsoft Store on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S; pay Netflix separately for viewing.
  • Sign in to the Xbox network first, then use Netflix’s Member Sign In with your Netflix email and password.
  • Original Xbox One is limited to 1080p. One S, One X, Series S, and Series X can reach 4K, HDR, and Dolby Vision when plan, title, speed, display, HDMI chain, and settings all line up.
  • Netflix’s guideline is 5 Mbps for 1080p and 15 Mbps for 4K; High or Auto playback quality is required for the highest formats.
  • Xbox consoles do not support official Netflix offline downloads, and new Xbox 360 app downloads ended with the store closure on July 29, 2024.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use one Netflix account on two Xbox consoles?

Yes, subject to the simultaneous-device limit and Netflix household rules for your plan. Watching from a console at another residence may require an Extra Member arrangement or a household update rather than simply entering the password again.

Will changing Xbox display resolution force every Netflix title into 4K?

No. The title itself must have an Ultra HD stream, and the account, network, television, HDMI path, and playback setting must qualify. An HD-only title remains HD even on a 4K television.

Why does Netflix say my Xbox region is unsupported?

Netflix requires both Netflix and Xbox Live service in the region. Changing the console’s display language or region does not create service availability, so an unsupported-region message may require using a supported account and location.

Can a child watch Netflix on an Xbox?

Yes. Choose the child’s Netflix profile after sign-in, then press B to open the Netflix menu and enter the Kids area. Profile maturity controls are managed through the Netflix account, not by the Xbox app’s video-resolution settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does an Xbox need an optical cable for Dolby Atmos Netflix audio?

No optical connection is required by the Netflix setup itself. Atmos still depends on an Atmos-capable Xbox and audio system, compatible HDMI/receiver routing, an eligible Netflix plan, and a title carrying the Dolby Atmos badge.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
