Netcup is the better value for technically capable customers who want inexpensive VPS or root-server capacity, flexible billing and direct control. IONOS is the safer choice for a small business that values a larger published infrastructure footprint, 24/7/365 support and a more managed-service approach. Neither wins every category. Shared-hosting prices are close, so the decisive comparison is the price after any introductory term, included storage and databases, contract length, support expectations and how much server administration you want to do yourself.

This comparison uses 2026 plan listings, provider documentation and plan-specific VPSBenchmarks results. Prices and promotions can change; treat the figures below as dated snapshots rather than permanent quotes.

What is the quick verdict on Netcup vs IONOS?

Choose netcup when recurring cost, server choice, API or console access, hourly billing and self-management are priorities. Choose IONOS when round-the-clock support, a broad published operating footprint and a business-oriented managed experience matter more than the lowest VPS price. For ordinary shared hosting, calculate the renewal bill and compare resources before deciding.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Plan Advertised price Storage Databases Contract or price condition
netcup Webhosting 1000 €2.17/month 25 GB SSD 1 12-month minimum term; SSL and domain included in the cited listing
IONOS Webhosting Standard €3/month for six months, then €6/month 50 GB web space 10 Introductory period followed by the stated renewal price

On the stated terms, netcup costs about €26.04 for a 12-month minimum (12 × €2.17). IONOS costs €18 for the first six months and €36 for the next six, or €54 over the first year, before taxes or extras that may apply. That arithmetic does not make netcup universally cheaper: the plans differ in storage, database allowance and possibly domain conditions. It does show why a six-month promotion should not be compared with a recurring rate in isolation.

What should you check in a renewal quote?

  • Whether the displayed amount is promotional, recurring or tied to a minimum term.
  • VAT, domain-renewal charges, mailbox limits and paid add-ons.
  • Storage type and whether “web space” includes mail, backups or logs.
  • Database count, database size limits and supported versions.
  • Cancellation deadlines and whether the term renews automatically.

If you run several small sites, the database difference may matter more than 25 GB versus 50 GB. If you run one low-traffic site, the lower netcup rate may be more important. Price both providers for your complete term, not just the first invoice.

Which provider is better for a VPS or root server?

Netcup has the broader low-cost self-managed menu. Its server page lists vServer, root-server, ARM and vGPU products from €2.20 per month, with API access, a remote console, pre-installed images, IPv4 and IPv6, DDoS protection and hourly billing on some products. IONOS also sells VPS products, but the cited evidence supports a stronger case for netcup when you want many low-cost configurations and direct control.

When does a netcup vServer make sense?

A vServer suits a website, VPN, development environment, monitoring stack or small application where virtualized resources and root access are sufficient. You are responsible for operating-system updates, hardening, application configuration, backups and recovery unless you add separate services. API and console access help automate provisioning and recover a machine when SSH is unavailable.

When should you choose a root server?

A root server is the better fit for workloads that need more predictable dedicated resources or sustained CPU and disk activity. netcup documents a minimum annual availability of 99.9% for root servers, compared with 99.6% for VPS. Those are minimum availability commitments in its documentation, not a promise that every application will perform identically.

What does hourly billing change?

Hourly billing on eligible netcup products can reduce the risk of short-lived test environments, migration windows or burst projects. Confirm the product’s billing unit, monthly cap, storage charges and deletion policy before assuming that stopping a virtual machine stops every charge.

What do independent VPS benchmarks show?

VPSBenchmarks tested 10 plans from the two providers. Its grades combine web, CPU, disk, network and stability tests; price is excluded unless the site’s price-weighted switch is enabled. In the displayed results, netcup RS 1000 G12 received C grades for web, CPU and disk. IONOS VPS S+ received E for web and CPU, D for stability, E for disk and C for network.

Tested plan Web CPU Disk Network Stability
netcup RS 1000 G12 C C C not stated in the displayed summary not stated in the displayed summary
IONOS VPS S+ E E E C D

These are plan-specific test results, not a blanket ranking of every tier. A different region, host node, storage configuration or software image can change the outcome. Use the grades as a reason to test your own workload, not as a substitute for capacity planning. Price is also separate from performance unless you deliberately enable price weighting.

Where are Netcup and IONOS servers located?

The location list matters for latency, data-residency planning and customer-law considerations. netcup lists facilities in Vienna, Germany, the Netherlands, Manassas and Singapore. The benchmark’s IONOS location list includes France, Germany, Spain, the United Kingdom and the United States. The available region depends on the specific product, so verify the location selector before ordering.

How should you choose a region?

  1. Place latency-sensitive applications near most users. Measure from your users’ actual networks rather than relying on a country label.
  2. Check where backups, snapshots and control-plane data are stored, not only where the virtual machine runs.
  3. Confirm contractual and regulatory requirements for personal or health data with your legal or compliance adviser.
  4. Keep a second-region recovery plan if an outage in one facility would threaten your business.

Does IONOS have better support than Netcup?

IONOS publishes a larger support and operating footprint: 31 operated data centers, 4,300 employees, 22 million domains under management, more than 6.2 million customer contracts and over 100,000 servers. It advertises “24/7/365” customer service. Those published figures support choosing IONOS when accessible, always-on assistance is a core requirement.

Netcup’s value model assumes more customer administration. Its documentation emphasizes self-service server controls, API access and remote console features. Before choosing it for a production system, decide who will patch the operating system, investigate alerts, rotate credentials, restore backups and respond at night. A low hosting invoice is not the same as a low total operating cost.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What response should you expect?

Neither provider’s public figures establish a guaranteed response time for every ticket or incident. Treat advertised support availability as channel coverage, not a contractual promise that a complex Linux problem will be solved immediately. For a business-critical service, obtain the applicable support-level terms and escalation path in writing.

How do availability, backups and DDoS protection compare?

Netcup documents minimum annual availability of 99.6% for VPS and 99.9% for root servers, plus 2 Tbps DDoS protection and optional snapshots. Availability percentages allow downtime; they are not the same as a recovery-time objective. A snapshot is useful for rollback, but it is not a complete backup strategy if it remains in the same failure domain.

A practical backup design

  • Keep at least one copy outside the hosting account or region.
  • Encrypt backups and store recovery keys separately from the server.
  • Test restoration on a schedule; an untested backup is only an assumption.
  • Document recovery time and recovery point targets for each application.
  • Use provider snapshots for quick rollback and independent backups for disaster recovery.

The cited material does not provide an equivalent IONOS DDoS or snapshot specification for a direct numerical comparison. Ask for the exact protection, backup retention and restore process attached to the IONOS product you are considering.

What operational incident should buyers consider in 2026?

Netcup’s help center records a precautionary service shutdown beginning 21 October 2026 at 23:45. The notice says affected systems were patched and fully operational again, with no evidence of exploitation reported on that page. This is a dated operational notice, not proof that a provider is permanently insecure or that every customer was affected.

Use the event to check your own resilience: subscribe to provider status notifications, keep console credentials available, maintain an independent backup and rehearse how you will restart services after a precautionary shutdown. Ask both providers how they communicate security maintenance, whether emergency reboots are announced and what evidence they provide after an incident.

How do you choose between self-management and managed hosting?

The right answer depends on staff time and failure tolerance rather than brand preference.

Choose netcup when these statements are true

  • You can administer Linux or have a reliable administrator.
  • You need root access, API automation, unusual images, ARM or GPU-oriented options.
  • You are comfortable building your own monitoring, patching and backup process.
  • Hourly billing or low monthly cost materially improves the project economics.
  • You can tolerate self-service support for routine infrastructure tasks.

Choose IONOS when these statements are true

  • A published 24/7/365 support channel reduces operational risk.
  • Your organization values a large, established operating footprint.
  • You prefer a more managed business workflow over assembling infrastructure components.
  • Support escalation and account assistance are worth paying more than the lowest VPS rate.
  • Your team wants to spend less time maintaining the host layer.

What is the safest way to test before migrating?

  1. Inventory the application: CPU, RAM, disk I/O, network transfer, database size and peak concurrency.
  2. Deploy a non-production copy in the intended region and operating system image.
  3. Run representative load tests and measure response time, error rate, disk latency and memory pressure.
  4. Test SSH or console recovery, firewall rules, updates, snapshot rollback and an off-site restore.
  5. Measure support escalation with a non-critical question and record the response path.
  6. Lower DNS TTL before migration, copy data, verify the new service and switch traffic during a monitored window.
  7. Keep the old host online until logs, mail flow, certificates, scheduled jobs and backups are confirmed.

Do not infer production capacity from a small benchmark score or a short trial. Your application’s database queries, cache behavior and backup workload determine the result.

Which provider wins for common workloads?

Workload Recommended starting point Why Main caution
Personal site or blog Either shared plan Both can cover modest traffic; compare renewal price and included databases. Check backups and domain renewal terms.
Several CMS sites IONOS Standard or a suitably sized netcup plan IONOS’s cited plan includes 10 databases; netcup’s entry plan includes one. Confirm per-site limits and upgrade path.
Developer sandbox netcup vServer Low entry price, API, console and hourly billing on some products. You manage patching and deletion of unused resources.
Production API or database Whichever passes your workload test Benchmark grades alone cannot predict your application. Design independent backups and monitoring.
Small business without an infrastructure specialist IONOS Published 24/7/365 support and a managed-business orientation. Price the post-introductory bill and support terms.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

What hidden trade-offs can change the decision?

  • Administration time: root access transfers security and maintenance work to you.
  • Contract friction: a low monthly rate with a minimum term may cost more than a flexible plan when a project ends early.
  • Resource guarantees: advertised storage capacity does not describe CPU contention, I/O performance or burst limits.
  • Data movement: egress charges, snapshot exports and migration tooling can outweigh a small monthly price difference.
  • Support scope: 24/7 contact availability does not guarantee application debugging or a specific resolution time.
  • Regional fit: a nearby country can reduce latency, but only measurements from your users reveal the practical difference.

Final recommendation: which hosting provider should you pick in 2026?

Netcup wins the value and flexibility contest for an experienced operator: its €2.20 starting server catalogue, broad product types, API and console controls, optional hourly billing and documented DDoS protection make it compelling for self-managed VPS and root-server work. Its cited RS 1000 G12 benchmark result also outperformed the tested IONOS VPS S+ on the displayed web, CPU and disk grades, although those results apply only to those plans.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

IONOS wins when support coverage and organizational scale justify a higher bill. Its published 31 data centers, more than 100,000 servers and 24/7/365 customer service are meaningful advantages for a small business that cannot staff infrastructure around the clock. For shared hosting, neither provider is an automatic winner: compare the full renewal term, storage, database allowance, domain conditions and cancellation rules for your exact site.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I move a WordPress site from IONOS to netcup without changing its domain?

Yes. Copy the files and database, recreate mailboxes if needed, test the site on the new server, then change DNS records. Keep the old hosting active until DNS caches expire and every certificate, cron job and mail route has been verified.

Is a VPS cheaper than shared hosting for a small website?

Not necessarily. A VPS may have a lower headline price, but you must account for administration time, backups, monitoring, security updates and any control-panel or mail service you add. Shared hosting can be cheaper in total when convenience is valuable.

Do Netcup and IONOS include automatic backups with every VPS?

The cited Netcup documentation mentions optional snapshots, not a universal automatic-backup guarantee. The available evidence does not establish one equivalent IONOS policy for every VPS tier, so read the product-specific backup retention and restore terms before ordering.
