Yes—you can deploy a NestJS app on Namecheap shared hosting if your cPanel account includes Setup Node.js App. Build the app, upload its production files to a dedicated application root, select a compatible Node.js version and Production mode, configure the app URL and startup file, install dependencies, then start and manage the process through cPanel. Availability, runtime versions, and application limits depend on the hosting account, so confirm them before preparing the deployment.
What does a NestJS deployment on Namecheap shared hosting require?
NestJS is a Node.js framework, so the hosting account must be able to run a persistent Node.js web application—not just serve static files or PHP pages. On Namecheap shared hosting, the relevant path is cPanel’s Setup Node.js App feature, which is available only when the provider has enabled it for the account. cPanel says Node.js appears only if the hosting provider enables it.
The deployment has two parts: a compiled NestJS application and a cPanel configuration that tells the hosting environment how to run it. The application root must contain the files the app needs, and the configured startup file must lead to the compiled NestJS entry point. The selected Node.js version, environment variables, URL, and app files must all agree.
Before doing build or upload work, sign in to cPanel and check for Setup Node.js App. If it is absent, this workflow is not available on that account; ask Namecheap whether it can be enabled or whether your plan supports Node.js applications. Do not assume that every shared-hosting account has the feature.

What should you check before uploading?
A short preflight check prevents most wasted uploads. Confirm that the account exposes Setup Node.js App, note which Node.js versions are offered, and check whether the account has an application-count limit. cPanel notes that Node.js and its Web Apps controls appear only when the hosting provider enables them. Namecheap also describes application limits as account-dependent, so the ability to create one app does not necessarily mean that you can create as many apps as you want.
Confirm the domain or subdomain that should receive requests and whether the panel lets you map the application to a domain or path. Ask which HTTPS and routing options are available for Node.js applications. If the NestJS app needs a database or outbound API calls, verify that the account can reach those services and that the plan does not restrict the connections your app requires.
Finally, check the maintenance tools you will actually need: environment-variable fields, a way to install packages, restart controls, logs, and SSH or Terminal access if you prefer command-line work. These controls vary by account. Knowing what is available before deployment helps you choose an update process that does not depend on an unavailable feature.

Choose a runtime supported by both your NestJS project and the hosting account. NestJS recommends Node.js 20.19 or later, or Node.js 22.12 or later on the 22.x line. Namecheap’s published feature description lists versions from 6.x through 24.x, including 20.x and 22.x, but that list is not a guarantee that every version is available on every account or remains available indefinitely.
A version being selectable does not automatically make it suitable for a current NestJS application. In particular, the presence of older versions in a provider’s list is not a reason to use one: match the NestJS requirement and the runtime used for your build. Check the available versions in the app-creation screen before choosing, and verify the project’s own Node.js requirements if they are stricter.
Keep the version choice consistent across your workflow. Build and test with a compatible Node.js release, then select the same major line, or a release explicitly supported by the project, in cPanel. If installation or startup fails immediately after changing versions, compare the selected runtime with the project’s declared requirements before changing application code.
How do you prepare a NestJS app for production?
Build the app before configuring the cPanel application. NestJS documents npm run build as the build command; it compiles the TypeScript project into JavaScript in dist. The usual compiled entry point is dist/main.js, but a project with a different TypeScript layout or build configuration can produce a different path.
- Build the project: run
npm run buildin the project environment. Confirm that the expected compiled entry file exists in the generated output. - Identify production files: include
package.json, the project’s lockfile, the compiled output, and any assets or configuration files the application needs at runtime. The asset list depends on the app; check that any templates, certificates, migrations, or other required runtime files are included if your project uses them. - Keep secrets out of the upload: do not put database passwords, API keys, or other secrets in source control or a public-facing directory. Plan to enter them as environment variables in the cPanel app settings.
- Check the startup path: note whether the app can start from the compiled entry point directly or needs a JavaScript wrapper file. The file you configure in cPanel must exist in the application root and lead to the compiled app.
NestJS documents production execution as node dist/main.js. That command identifies the compiled application entry point; it does not replace the need to configure the startup file and process through the hosting panel.

Should you upload source code as well as dist?
The runtime needs the compiled JavaScript and everything that code imports, not necessarily every development file. At minimum, upload package.json, the lockfile, the compiled output, and required runtime assets. Whether you also upload TypeScript source, tests, documentation, or build configuration depends on how you plan to maintain the app. If you build locally and deploy the result, those files may not be needed for execution, but removing a file that a runtime tool or migration command expects can still break the app.
Do not treat dist as a complete application by itself. Dependencies are installed from package.json, and assets referenced by the compiled code must be present at the paths the app expects. After uploading, inspect the application root and make sure there is no extra nested directory level. For example, if the files are in my-api/ inside the directory you selected, set Application root to my-api, not to its parent.
Where should you upload the application files?
Upload the app into a dedicated application directory and use that directory as the cPanel Application root. Namecheap’s cPanel guidance says the main domain’s public_html folder cannot be used to configure the Node.js server. The app root is the working directory for the Node.js application, not a directory to choose simply because it is the usual web root for static site files.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
You can place the files using cPanel File Manager, FTP, or SSH, depending on the access your account provides. Whatever method you use, check the final directory structure: the configured root should contain package.json and the startup file or wrapper, with the compiled output in the location that file expects. A misplaced extra folder level is a common source of setup errors—for example, selecting a parent directory when the files were uploaded into a nested project directory.
How do you create the Node.js app in cPanel?
Once the files are in the intended directory, create a cPanel application and set its version, mode, root, URL, startup file, and environment variables to match the project. Namecheap documents these settings in its Setup Node.js App workflow.
- Open the app manager: in cPanel, select Setup Node.js App, then choose Create application.
- Select the runtime: choose a Node.js version compatible with the NestJS app and available in your account. The version should also be appropriate for the version used to build and install the project.
- Set the application mode: select Production for a production deployment. This setting should match the environment variables and production configuration you intend the app to use.
- Set the application root: enter the dedicated directory where you uploaded the app. Verify that this directory—not the main domain’s
public_htmlfolder—contains the relevant project files. - Set the application URL: choose the domain or URL path through which the app should be reached, using the options the panel provides for your account.
- Enter the startup file: enter the actual JavaScript filename that Passenger should execute. The filename must match the file in the application root; if you use a non-default name, configure it explicitly rather than assuming the panel will find it.
- Add environment variables: enter
NODE_ENV=productionand the app’s required settings, such as database credentials and API keys, through the panel’s environment-variable controls. - Create the application: save or create it using the cPanel control, then install its dependencies before starting it.
What startup file should a NestJS app use?
Passenger expects a JavaScript startup file, while a typical NestJS production build starts at dist/main.js. If cPanel accepts that compiled entry file as the startup file, configure the matching path or filename it expects. If it expects a separate startup file in the application root, use a wrapper that loads the compiled NestJS entry point.
The important requirement is consistency: the filename entered in cPanel must be the actual startup file, and that file must correctly reach the compiled app. cPanel warns that Passenger searches for the configured startup filename when it executes; if you choose a non-default name, set that exact name in the panel. Do not assume that Passenger will discover dist/main.js automatically just because it is the normal NestJS build output.
Before starting the application, check that the configured file is in the right directory and that any path it references is correct relative to the application root. If a wrapper is needed, keep it small and make sure its syntax is compatible with the project’s module format.

How do application URL and NestJS routes fit together?
The Application URL tells cPanel which domain or path should be routed to the Node.js process. NestJS still decides which paths exist inside that application. If your code uses a global prefix such as api, the health or test request must include that prefix. A request to the domain root can therefore return a route-level 404 even while the NestJS process is healthy.
Use a route you know exists, preferably a small health endpoint, when checking the deployment. Test the exact HTTPS URL configured in cPanel and confirm that any domain or path mapping is the one you intended. If the response is a NestJS 404, the request likely reached the application but used an undefined route; if the process does not respond at all, return to the startup, dependency, port, and application-root checks.
How do you install dependencies and start the app?
After uploading the manifest and lockfile, install dependencies in the cPanel-managed application environment. Namecheap documents a Run NPM Install action that installs the packages declared in package.json.
- Open the application in Setup Node.js App.
- Use Run NPM Install to install the project’s dependencies, or run
npm installin the application environment if your account’s workflow provides that option. - Wait for the install to complete and check for errors before proceeding. If installation fails, confirm that the application root contains the correct
package.jsonand lockfile, and that the selected Node.js version is compatible with the project. - Use the panel’s Start App control to launch the application.
- Open the configured URL and request a known health check or API route. A route-level 404 can mean the request reached NestJS but the requested route does not exist; an intentional health endpoint gives you a clearer success check.
Ensure the NestJS bootstrap listens on the port supplied by the hosting environment when the setup requires it. A port hard-coded for local development may not be the port the hosting environment routes to the application. The app must listen in a way compatible with the environment’s process manager and routing configuration.
What is a safe update procedure after the first deployment?
For a normal code release, build the project again in a compatible Node.js environment and confirm that the expected entry file is present. Upload the refreshed compiled output and any changed runtime assets into the same application root. If package.json or the lockfile changed, run Run NPM Install again so the cPanel environment reflects the declared dependencies.
Recheck environment variables when configuration changes. Values such as database credentials and API keys belong in the panel, not in a publicly accessible upload. Then use Restart App, request the known health route, and test an application endpoint. If the new code does not appear, verify that the upload went to the configured root and that the restart targeted the intended application.
How do you restart a NestJS app after a change?
Use cPanel’s Restart App control after changing code or configuration. The hosting panel and Passenger should manage the long-running process; avoid launching a second copy manually, which can create process or port conflicts.
Recommended Free Tools
For Passenger installations managed directly rather than through the panel workflow, cPanel also documents a tmp/restart.txt mechanism. For a Namecheap cPanel app, use the panel’s restart control when available so the action follows the hosting provider’s app-management setup. A restart does not correct a bad application root, missing dependency, or incorrect startup filename, so check those settings if the app fails to return after restarting.

How can you troubleshoot a failed startup systematically?
- Confirm capability: make sure Setup Node.js App still exists and that the account has not reached an application limit.
- Confirm the runtime: compare the selected Node.js version with the NestJS recommendation and the project’s requirements.
- Confirm the root: inspect the directory selected as Application root and verify that it contains
package.jsonand the uploaded startup file. - Confirm the startup filename: match the cPanel field exactly, including capitalization, and verify that the file reaches the compiled entry point.
- Confirm dependencies: run the panel’s npm-install action and read any reported error before attempting another start.
- Confirm configuration: check required environment variables and ensure that the app listens on the port supplied by the hosting environment.
- Confirm process ownership: stop any manually launched duplicate and let Passenger or cPanel own the process.
- Confirm routing: test a known route or health endpoint. A 404 for an unknown route is different from an application that never starts.
If the account exposes logs, use them to identify whether the failure occurs during dependency installation, startup-file loading, application bootstrap, or request handling. The exact log location and retention depend on the hosting setup, so ask Namecheap if the panel does not show the relevant details.
What commonly prevents deployment?
Most failures come from account capability or a mismatch between the panel configuration and the uploaded project. Check these items before changing the app code:
- Setup Node.js App is missing: Node.js appears in cPanel only if the hosting provider enables it. Confirm feature availability and any application-count limits for the account before proceeding.
- The selected runtime is incompatible: compare the available cPanel versions with the NestJS runtime recommendation and the project’s requirements. Provider version availability can change.
- The application root is wrong: select the directory that actually contains the application files. Do not use the main domain’s
public_htmlfolder as the Node.js server directory. - The startup filename does not match: make the cPanel startup-file field match the actual JavaScript entry or wrapper file. Confirm that its path leads to the compiled app.
- Dependencies are missing: run the panel’s npm-install action after uploading
package.jsonand the lockfile. A successful file upload alone does not install packages. - The process was started outside the panel: let the panel or Passenger own the application process. Stop relying on a manually launched copy and use the panel’s start or restart controls.
- The request reaches the app but returns 404: distinguish a missing NestJS route from a failed process. Test a route that is known to exist, ideally a purpose-built health endpoint.
How can you tell whether shared hosting is the right fit?
Feature availability is only the first check. Before committing a production API to shared hosting, confirm that the account’s Node.js feature, limits, and process behavior fit the application’s workload. The available evidence does not establish resource limits or suitability for every NestJS workload, so ask the provider about your account and expected use.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Which Node.js versions are available to this specific account?
- Is there an application-count limit, and does the account have capacity for another app?
- What resource limits apply to memory, CPU, requests, or concurrent traffic?
- Does the plan allow the app’s required long-running API behavior?
- Can the app connect to the required database, and are outbound connections restricted?
- Does the panel provide the environment-variable controls, logs, SSH or Terminal access, and restart behavior you need to maintain the app?
- How are HTTPS and domain or path routing configured for a Node.js application?
These checks matter because a successful test deployment proves that the basic runtime and routing work, not that every production workload is within the account’s limits.
What should you compare if you move to another host?
If Namecheap shared hosting does not expose the runtime or controls your app needs, compare alternatives using operational criteria rather than price alone. Check Node.js version availability, whether Passenger or an equivalent process manager is supplied, and whether the plan permits long-running API workloads. Review application and resource limits, including how many apps the account can create and what CPU or memory boundaries apply.
Also compare SSH or Terminal access, environment-variable management, HTTPS and domain routing, restart behavior, logs, database connectivity, and the provider’s process policies. A host that offers a newer Node.js version but no practical restart or logging workflow may be harder to operate than one with a slightly different feature set. Ask for account-specific answers because shared-hosting capabilities can differ between plans and can change over time.

- Verify that cPanel shows Setup Node.js App and check any app-count limit.
- Confirm a Node.js release compatible with NestJS and the project.
- Run
npm run buildand identify the actual compiled entry file. - Prepare
package.json, the lockfile, dist, and required runtime assets. - Upload into a dedicated directory, not the main domain’s
public_htmldirectory. - Create the cPanel app in Production mode with the correct root and URL.
- Set the startup filename to the actual entry file or wrapper.
- Add
NODE_ENV=productionand all required environment variables. - Run NPM Install, then use Start App.
- Test a known HTTPS health or API route.
- After updates, upload the new build, reinstall when manifests change, and use Restart App.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a NestJS app use WebSockets on Namecheap shared hosting?
The documented setup establishes that cPanel can run a Node.js app when the feature is enabled, but it does not establish WebSocket support or suitability for every account. Ask Namecheap whether your specific plan and process manager support the connection behavior and duration your app requires.

Can I run a NestJS worker or scheduled task as well as the web app?
The cPanel workflow described here manages a Node.js web application; it does not establish that a separate background worker or scheduled process is supported. Check the hosting account’s process and scheduled-task rules before designing the app to depend on one.
Do I upload the dist folder or the whole NestJS project?
Upload the compiled output together with package.json, the lockfile, and every runtime asset the application needs. Source files are optional for execution only when your build and maintenance workflow does not depend on them; do not omit files that migrations, templates, or other runtime code imports.
What if dist/main.js exists but cPanel says the app cannot start?
Check that Application root is the directory containing package.json and the configured startup file, then verify that the startup-file field matches the actual JavaScript filename. Run NPM Install, confirm environment variables and the hosting port, and restart through cPanel. Passenger will not discover dist/main.js automatically if it is looking for another configured filename.

Run it after the initial upload and again whenever package.json or the lockfile changes. For a build-only code change with no dependency change, upload the new compiled files and restart the app.
Is Namecheap shared hosting suitable for every NestJS production API?
No conclusion can be made from the basic deployment workflow alone. Confirm account-specific memory, CPU, traffic, process, database, application-count, logging, and restart limits, and verify that the plan permits the long-running behavior your API requires.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Namecheap shared hosting can run NestJS when cPanel’s Setup Node.js App is enabled. Build to dist, place the project in a dedicated application root, align the Node.js version, URL, startup file, and environment variables, install dependencies, and let cPanel or Passenger handle starts and restarts.
