Nature Quest is an installable, offline-first web app that uses on-device AI to match you with a short outdoor mission, then prompts you to put your phone away. It is not a conversational chatbot: its default AI chooses and reorders activities from a fixed library of 114 hand-checked missions rather than writing new ones. After the outing, you can record a few words in a journal and optionally attach a photo. The project’s central idea is to make the screen a brief starting point—not the activity itself.
What is Nature Quest?
Nature Quest is an open-source Hacktoberfest 2026 submission by Eze Prince. It is designed to turn a quick interaction with a phone into a simple prompt to notice or do something outdoors. The app selects a mission, explains what to do and for how long, and then tells the user: “Your quest is ready. Now put the phone away.” The intended experience is deliberately different from an outdoor app that keeps a person looking at maps, feeds, or a chat window.
The basic loop is Mission, Reality, Return, Reflection, and Progress. A mission gives the outing a small focus; the user does it in the real world; then, after returning, they can write a few words and optionally attach a photo. The journal, streak, and achievements update from that return interaction. The project author describes the screen as the shortest part of the experience, rather than the place where the experience happens.
Recommended Free Tools
That framing matters when deciding whether the app fits. Nature Quest is not presented as a navigation tool, a field guide, or a system that measures nature exposure. It offers short prompts and a lightweight record of what the user says happened. Its value is in reducing the effort of choosing an activity, not in replacing outdoor judgment or observation.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
How does Nature Quest choose a mission?
In its default mode, Nature Quest matches the user’s context to a fixed library; it does not ask a generative model to invent a new quest. The library contains 114 hand-checked missions, according to Prince’s 2026 project description. That fixed set gives the app a bounded menu of activities instead of open-ended AI instructions.
The default matching model is Xenova/all-MiniLM-L6-v2, described by the project as an Apache-2.0 model of about 25 MB. Through Transformers.js and ONNX Runtime Web, it runs in a Web Worker in the browser. It embeds the user’s request along with context such as time of day, season, companions, energy, and a light preference for quests completed before. The app then uses those signals to reorder the existing mission library.
In practical terms, the AI’s role is closer to sorting than authoring. A person’s situation helps determine which existing prompt is a better fit, but the model does not add a new activity to the default library. That distinction limits the scope for a model to wander into elaborate, unsupported instructions. It does not, by itself, guarantee that every mission is appropriate in every location or circumstance; the user still has to apply ordinary judgment.
Optional creative writing is described as experimental and off by default. It can use a small on-device writer or a larger open model running on the user’s computer, with gpt-oss:20b through Ollama given as an example. This is a separate path from default matching, not a requirement for the core mission loop.
Does Nature Quest work offline?
According to the project description, the installable progressive web app works offline after setup. It uses a service worker, IndexedDB, and a sync outbox, with progress stored on the device in the demo. Local inference is the reason the default matching can continue when connectivity drops, and the author says there is no per-quest API bill.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
“After setup” is an important qualification: the project does not establish that a first-time visit or setup can happen without an internet connection. Nor does an offline-first design guarantee identical behavior on every phone and browser. Browser storage, available memory, and whether the app and its model assets have been cached can affect what works in a particular installation.
For someone planning to use it somewhere with weak signal, the sensible approach is to open and set up the PWA while connected, then confirm it can reload and produce a mission before relying on it away from coverage. The author reports browser checks that included offline reload, but those checks are project-reported rather than an independent compatibility study across devices.

What happens to your location, journal, and photos?
The documented demo design keeps progress on the device and uses local browser storage. Prince says, “Your words and photos stay on your phone. No server I control ever sees them.” This describes the app’s stated data flow; it is not a universal guarantee about browser or operating-system telemetry, device backups, or other network activity outside the app’s control.
The project includes an optional Firebase sign-in path, but Firestore was not enabled for the demo. The available description does not establish that journal entries or photos are uploaded through that path. It is therefore useful to distinguish the optional sign-in capability from the documented demo behavior rather than assume that every deployment stores data in the same way.
Location is not listed among the model’s matching inputs in the project description. The context factors named are the user’s request, time of day, season, companions, energy, and a light preference for previously completed quests. That does not prove what permissions every browser build may request; check the browser’s site-permission controls if you want to see or change permissions on your device.

Is Nature Quest a chatbot?
No. The default experience is a mission card, not a back-and-forth conversation. The AI runs behind the scenes to match context to a mission, and the app presents a compact prompt with its title, rationale, task, and time. Its interaction model is closer to “choose a small thing to do” than “ask an assistant what to do outdoors.”

That design also explains why the model does not freely write quests by default. The project’s goal is not to simulate a naturalist or answer arbitrary questions; it is to select from reviewed prompts and get the user off the screen. Optional creative writing exists, but Prince describes it as experimental and disabled by default.
Can Nature Quest verify that you completed a quest?
No completion method described for Nature Quest independently proves that an outdoor activity occurred. The app can label a completion as self-reported, time-checked, or photo-attached, but those labels describe what evidence was recorded—not an external verification of the outing.
| Completion label | What it indicates | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Self-reported | The user reports completing the quest. | Independent confirmation that the activity happened. |
| Time-checked | The app records a time check associated with the quest. | Proof of what the user did during that time. |
| Photo-attached | A photo is attached to the record; the project says its photo check verifies an image is real and non-blank. | Proof that the image depicts the quest or that the user completed it. |
The author says the AI never claims to have seen what happened. That is a useful boundary: a photo can add context to a personal journal entry, but it should not be mistaken for a trustworthy activity sensor or a moderation system that confirms the scene.
What safety limits does the app use?
The project describes rules that exclude missions involving climbing, water, roads, foraging, darkness, and strangers. These exclusions narrow the kinds of activities the system can suggest. They are guardrails in the app’s mission design, not independent safety certification or a guarantee against every risk.

Outdoor conditions are local and changeable. A prompt that seems straightforward may not suit a particular route, weather condition, mobility need, age group, or level of supervision. Treat the mission as an optional idea: skip or adapt it if it does not make sense where you are. The app’s stated exclusions do not replace local rules or a person’s own assessment of their surroundings.
Why does Nature Quest use a small matching model?
The project’s performance story explains the choice. Prince reports that an early attempt to run Qwen2.5-0.5B on a mid-range Android phone in Chrome using CPU only took about 19 seconds to load, about 15 seconds to produce its first word, and generated around 0.3 tokens per second. A roughly 100-token quest therefore did not finish in that test. A smaller 135M model was faster, but rambled and still did not produce a usable quest.
Those are author-reported measurements from one device, not an independent benchmark or a prediction for every phone. They nevertheless illustrate the trade-off the project made: use a compact model for semantic matching against existing content, and keep free-form writing optional. For a product intended to get a user outside quickly, a slow response or a rambling instruction would undermine the core interaction.
The model’s approximately 25 MB size is also a practical part of the local-first design, though the project description does not provide download times or a full device compatibility matrix. A smaller local model can reduce dependence on a hosted AI service, but it does not mean inference has no device cost: it still uses the browser and device resources to run.

To maintain the grip and prevent accidental falls, it's a good practice to periodically reapply pressure to the suction cup.
Prince also describes personal field use on October 11. “Stand in the light” was selected; “Bench pause” lasted five minutes and was labeled “Time on quest checked”; and “Lean and look up” was completed in about a minute with a photo attached. These observations show how the mission and record flow can look in one outing, but they are a single author’s experience rather than an independent study of effectiveness or user adoption.
What do you need to use Nature Quest?
The project is an installable PWA for an existing phone; it does not require special outdoor gear. Its stated design uses local browser inference and device storage, so setup and browser support matter more than buying additional hardware. The project description does not provide a comprehensive list of supported operating systems, minimum device specifications, or browser versions.
The app’s mission is a prompt, not an equipment checklist. You can choose whether the idea suits the place and circumstances; the project does not identify a required physical product or specialist kit. If you expect to use the app offline, complete setup and try an offline reload before leaving connectivity behind.
Who is Nature Quest best suited for?
Nature Quest is most relevant to someone who wants a low-friction idea for a short outdoor pause and prefers a finite, screened set of prompts to an open-ended AI conversation. The strongest match is a user who values having the phone do a brief selection task and then get out of the way, with an optional private-feeling journal step afterward.
It may be a poor fit for someone expecting turn-by-turn navigation, authoritative ecological identification, verified activity tracking, or a general-purpose AI assistant. None of those roles is established by the described feature set. It is also not possible to infer from the author’s testing and one field report that the app increases outdoor activity or works equally well for all users.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can Nature Quest be used as a citizen-science data collection app?
The described experience is a personal mission and journal flow. No feature for submitting observations to a scientific database or sharing them with researchers is established.
What does Nature Quest do if its local model gets stuck or crashes?
The author says browser checks covered stuck or crashing models, but the project description does not specify the exact recovery or fallback behavior a user will see. If a mission does not appear, the available evidence does not support promising a particular workaround.
