NASA’s four-person CHAPEA Mission 1 crew emerged from a Mars-like habitat at Johnson Space Center in Houston on July 6, 2024, after 378 days inside. They had not traveled to Mars: the mission was an Earth-based research simulation designed to study how people live and work under conditions relevant to future exploration.
What happened when the crew emerged?
Kelly Haston, Ross Brockwell, Nathan Jones and Anca Selariu completed the first Crew Health and Performance Exploration Analog (CHAPEA) mission. It began June 25, 2023, and ended with the crew leaving the habitat on July 6, 2024. NASA described the event as their return “back on Earth.”
The crew had spent the 378 days in an isolated habitat of about 1,700 square feet at NASA’s Johnson Space Center. The structure was 3D-printed to serve as a simulated Mars surface habitat; it was not a spacecraft, and the crew did not land on Mars. NASA’s July 10, 2024 completion account details the mission and the crew’s exit.
What did the simulation involve?
CHAPEA was built to examine human health and performance during long-duration exploration under constraints such as limited resources, isolation and confinement. Mission 1 activities included simulated Marswalks, robotic operations, habitat maintenance, exercise and growing crops. NASA’s Mission 1 overview also describes communication delays and environmental stressors in the simulated setting.

These tasks made the habitat a research analog: a controlled Earth-based setting for studying aspects of exploration operations and crew experience. It cannot reproduce every condition of a real Mars mission, and the mission’s completion alone does not establish how the crew’s health or performance changed.
NASA’s CHAPEA principal investigator, Grace Douglas, said the crew had been given challenges that crews could face on Mars and called their operational objectives unprecedented. She also said the data gathered would be analyzed. That statement describes the mission’s aims and data collection, not a published result. NASA’s accounts cited here do not report a quantified Mission 1 health or performance finding. NASA’s CHAPEA program overview describes the program’s purpose.

How Mission 2 follows Mission 1
CHAPEA is a multi-mission program. NASA’s 2024 completion account said two further one-year missions were planned after Mission 1; the later program updates provide the more current status. According to NASA’s May 7, 2026 update, Mission 2 began October 19, 2025, and had passed day 200 of its planned 378-day simulation.
During that update, NASA said the Mission 2 crew was undertaking a simulated two-week communications blackout, working without contact with mission control through preplanned procedures and available resources. The account also describes delayed communications, limited supplies and simulated equipment malfunctions. These are Mission 2 details, not evidence that Mission 1 included the same blackout or malfunctions. NASA’s program overview lists October 31, 2026, as Mission 2’s planned exit date; it is a scheduled date, not confirmation that the crew completed the mission.

NASA’s May 7, 2026 Mission 2 update reports the day-200 milestone, while the CHAPEA overview lists the planned exit date.

Mission 1 demonstrated that NASA could conduct a yearlong, crewed Mars-surface analog with planned operational tasks and constraints in a dedicated habitat. Its value to future exploration depends on what researchers learn from the collected data; the milestone itself is not proof of a particular health outcome or a forecast of exactly how a crew would fare on Mars.

NASA’s Mission 1 overview describes the first crew’s activities and simulated conditions. The completion account, program page and later Mission 2 update distinguish the completed 2024 simulation from the program’s subsequent work.
