Curiosity found 21 carbon-containing molecules in a Martian rock sample, including seven detected on Mars for the first time. The result adds evidence that ancient Mars had chemistry relevant to life, but it does not show that life existed there or explain whether the molecules formed biologically or geologically.
What Curiosity found in the Mary Anning 3 sample
NASA reported on April 21, 2026, that Curiosity had identified the most diverse collection of organic molecules yet found on Mars in a rock sample nicknamed Mary Anning 3. The rover drilled the rock in 2020. It came from a clay-enriched part of Mount Sharp in Gale Crater, a region shaped by lakes and streams billions of years ago.
NASA counted 21 carbon-containing molecules in the sample, seven of them detected on Mars for the first time. “Organic” here describes carbon-based chemistry; it does not mean that a substance came from an organism. Carbon-containing molecules can form through non-biological processes, too.
How the rover analyzed the rock
Curiosity’s Sample Analysis at Mars (SAM) laboratory examines material delivered by the rover’s robotic-arm drill. SAM heats powdered rock and analyzes the gases released. For Mary Anning 3, the team also used a limited wet-chemistry cup containing tetramethylammonium hydroxide (TMAH), which can break larger molecules into smaller ones for analysis. NASA describes Mary Anning 3 as the first Martian material exposed to TMAH.

Why two of the molecules drew attention
Among the newly identified molecules was a nitrogen heterocycle, a ring-shaped structure containing nitrogen. Structures of this kind are considered precursors to RNA and DNA. Amy Williams of the University of Florida, lead author of the Mary Anning 3 paper, said: “That detection is pretty profound because these structures can be chemical precursors to more complex nitrogen-bearing molecules.”
The sample also contained benzothiophene, a molecule made of carbon and sulfur that is found in meteorites. Neither the nitrogen-containing structure nor benzothiophene identifies how the compounds formed on Mars.

What the finding says about ancient Mars
The sample’s clay-rich setting matters because clay minerals can help preserve organic compounds. The surrounding landscape records ancient lakes and streams, environments that make Mars a worthwhile place to investigate the conditions in which life might arise or persist. Such conditions speak to habitability—the possibility that an environment could support life—not to whether life actually appeared there.
A separate Curiosity analysis reported by NASA in 2022 measured at least 200 to 273 parts per million of organic carbon in rock samples. Jennifer Stern and colleagues described total organic carbon as a measure of material available for prebiotic chemistry and potentially biology. NASA cautioned that organic carbon can also come from non-living sources; the measurement is not a probability that Mars had life and is not a Mary Anning 3 molecule count.

How the rover findings differ
| Finding | Rover and sample | Evidence | What remains unresolved |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mary Anning 3, reported April 2026 | Curiosity; clay-rich rock at Mount Sharp, Gale Crater | A diverse molecular inventory, including nitrogen- and sulfur-bearing compounds, analyzed by SAM with TMAH wet chemistry | Whether the molecules formed biologically or through geology |
| Cumberland, reported in 2025; follow-up reported February 2026 | Curiosity; a different rock sample | Decane, undecane and dodecane, compounds with 10, 11 and 12 carbon atoms, respectively | Whether these compounds are fragments of fatty acids and what produced their abundance |
| Cheyava Falls, reported in 2025 | Perseverance; rock in the Bright Angel formation, Jezero Crater | “Leopard spots” and mineral patterns, including vivianite and greigite, observed with PIXL and SHERLOC | Whether the minerals formed through biological or abiotic processes |
Cumberland: a separate organic-chemistry result
Decane, undecane and dodecane may be fragments of fatty acids preserved in ancient mudstone. Fatty acids can be produced by life, but they can also form through geological processes. NASA’s February 2026 account of a follow-up study said the non-biological sources considered did not fully explain the compounds’ abundance. It also said more work is needed to understand how organics break down in Mars-like rock before conclusions about life can be drawn.
Cheyava Falls: mineral patterns, not Mary Anning 3 molecules
Perseverance’s observations at Cheyava Falls concern a different rock and a different kind of evidence. NASA calls the patterns a potential biosignature: a feature worth investigating because it could be associated with biology, but whose origin is not confirmed. The minerals could also have formed without life. Joel Hurowitz of Stony Brook University, lead author of the Cheyava Falls paper, said: “The combination of chemical compounds we found in the Bright Angel formation could have been a rich source of energy for microbial metabolisms.”

What would it take to answer whether Mars had life?
The Mary Anning 3 result establishes that a broad range of organic chemistry is preserved in at least one Martian sample. It does not establish the source of those molecules. The Cumberland follow-up narrows the explanations considered for that sample’s compounds, but its authors say the breakdown of organics in Mars-like rock needs further study. The Cheyava Falls patterns offer another line of evidence, yet biological and non-biological explanations remain possible.
NASA’s reported results do not provide a numerical probability that life existed on Mars. For now, the evidence supports a more specific conclusion: ancient Mars had environments and chemistry relevant to habitability, while the origin of the reported molecules and mineral patterns remains open.
