NASA SPHEREx data are available publicly through the NASA/IPAC Infrared Science Archive (IRSA). For a first look, open the IRSA SPHEREx Data Explorer, search a sky position, and inspect the returned spectral image. For repeatable work, use IRSA’s SIA2 service, a cutout request, or Python tools such as PyVO and Astroquery.

What you download is usually not a conventional visible-light photograph. SPHEREx maps the entire sky in 102 infrared wavelengths, and its main Quick Release product is a calibrated, multi-extension FITS spectral-image file. To interpret it correctly, you must look beyond the rendered image at flags, variance, zodiacal-light information, the point-spread function (PSF), and wavelength metadata.

Where are NASA SPHEREx images and survey data?

IRSA is the authoritative public access point for SPHEREx survey products. Its SPHEREx Data Explorer provides a graphical search and visualization interface, while the same archive exposes machine-readable SIA2 queries, cutout services, and programmatic access through PyVO and Astroquery.

SPHEREx releases data to the public on a rolling basis. NASA describes the mission as an all-sky survey in 102 infrared wavelengths, so a “SPHEREx image” is generally a wavelength-resolved detector product rather than one RGB picture. The main Quick Release science product is a Level 2 Spectral Image Multi-Extension FITS file (MEF).

As of November 2026, IRSA provides QR2 and QR3 collections. QR1 was formally retired in February 2026; QR2 headers were updated in April 2026 to correct PSF-extension header errors, and QR3 releases began in September 2026. Archive contents and processing status can change, so record the release and access date with any downloaded data.

Which SPHEREx access method should I use?

Choose the interface according to the job, not simply according to whether you can write code.

Method Best for Trade-off
Data Explorer GUI First-time searches, visual inspection, coordinate and pixel readouts Less convenient for repeatable batch searches
SIA2/API Reproducible searches and automation You must understand collections, query parameters and returned access URLs
Full MEF download Detector-level inspection, complete metadata and analysis Approximately 70 MB per spectral-image MEF
Cutout MEF One target or a small sky region Spatially limited and still requires attention to detector, WCS and PSF information
PyVO or Astroquery Batch jobs and integration with a Python analysis pipeline Requires a Python environment and some knowledge of VO queries

A full detector file is useful when you need the surrounding field, detector geometry or all calibration layers. A cutout is usually the efficient choice for a single target because it retains the relevant multi-extension structure while reducing the amount of data to download.

How do I find a SPHEREx image in the Data Explorer?

The Data Explorer is the simplest route if you want to see an observation before downloading it. It can display coordinates, pixel values, wavelength and bandpass information, and it lets you move among the HDUs in a FITS product.

  1. Open the SPHEREx Data Explorer from the IRSA SPHEREx mission page. The archive is the place to start for current public releases.
  2. Enter a search constraint. A sky position is the usual choice; use the available position, region or observation constraints to narrow the result.
  3. Inspect the returned image. Use the visualization readout to check the cursor coordinates, pixel size, pixel value, wavelength and bandpass. A rendered view is an orientation aid, not by itself a calibrated photometry result.
  4. Change the FITS extension being displayed. Examine the image, flags, variance, zodiacal-light and PSF-related HDUs instead of relying only on the default image rendering.
  5. Select the observations or products you need. The download controls can prepare a FITS file, archive or script, and spatial cutouts can be requested from the interface.
  6. Generate the download. Choose Generate Download Script for a reproducible command. Larger packaging requests are sent to the Job Monitor.

IRSA requires a login to use its Workspace. That requirement is separate from the public availability of the data: you can search and inspect public products, but Workspace-based packaging and saved jobs use your account.

How do I search SPHEREx with SIA2?

SIA2 (the Astronomical Data Query Model’s Simple Image Access service) is the better choice when you want a query that can be saved, rerun or incorporated into a script. IRSA documents the following SPHEREx collections:

  • spherex_qr3_deep — QR3 deep-survey data
  • spherex_qr2 — QR2 wide-survey data
  • spherex_qr2_deep — QR2 deep-survey data

Collection choice is part of the scientific question. QR2 and QR3 represent different release and calibration contexts, while wide and deep identify different coverage strategies. Do not silently combine them when comparing measurements; record the collection name in your notes.

For example, this IRSA request searches QR2 around right ascension 127.69444 degrees and declination −39.17760 degrees with a 0.01-degree radius:

wget -O spherex-example.html "https://irsa.ipac.caltech.edu/SIA?COLLECTION=spherex_qr2&POS=circle+127.69444+-39.17760+0.01&RESPONSEFORMAT=HTML"

The same request can be made with curl. The returned SIA2 table includes an access_url for an on-premises image and a cloud_access value containing cloud-hosted access information. Treat those values as the authoritative download locations returned for that query; do not construct a file URL by guessing a directory or filename.

For a machine workflow, request a machine-readable response when supported by the service, parse the returned table, filter the rows you need, and then download the selected access_url values. Save the query parameters and response with your analysis so another person can reproduce the selection.

How do I download only a region with a SPHEREx cutout?

Use IRSA’s cutout service after identifying the observation. A cutout returns a spatial subset of a SPHEREx MEF and preserves the relevant HDU structure, reducing the download compared with an approximately 70 MB full detector file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Find the observation in the Data Explorer or with SIA2.
  2. Pass the target position and requested spatial size to the IRSA cutout workflow, or select the cutout option in the Data Explorer download interface.
  3. Download the resulting multi-extension FITS file and retain the original observation identifier and cutout parameters.
  4. Check the cutout’s WCS and detector metadata before matching pixels to sky coordinates. A cutout is not a new independent observation; it is a spatial subset of the original detector product.

IRSA also provides a Python notebook demonstrating multi-extension FITS cutout downloads. Cutouts are ideal for inspecting one target, but a full MEF may be necessary when a source lies near a detector boundary, when you need nearby background, or when your analysis depends on detector-wide PSF behavior.

How do I get SPHEREx data for a sky position in Python?

PyVO and Astroquery are the archive-oriented options IRSA points users toward for programmatic searches and downloads. They are useful when you need many positions, scheduled reprocessing, or a pipeline that records every query.

A practical Python workflow is:

  1. Create a sky coordinate and a search radius.
  2. Query the IRSA SIA2 service for the selected QR2 or QR3 collection.
  3. Inspect the returned table before downloading. Confirm the release, wide/deep designation, observation identifier and access URL.
  4. Download either the full MEF or a cutout, depending on the analysis area.
  5. Save the query, response table and release information alongside the data.

After downloading, a FITS library such as astropy.io.fits can list and open the HDUs:

from astropy.io import fits

with fits.open("spherex_product.fits") as hdul:
    hdul.info()
    image = hdul["IMAGE"].data
    flags = hdul["FLAGS"].data
    variance = hdul["VARIANCE"].data

This example only demonstrates file inspection. It does not replace the SPHEREx calibration documentation: usable-pixel selection, uncertainty handling, wavelength assignment and PSF treatment depend on the product and the science question.

What is inside a SPHEREx spectral-image FITS file?

A SPHEREx spectral-image MEF is a container of related arrays and metadata, not a single flattened picture. The documented Level 2 product has six detector-specific spectral MEFs for a sky pointing in the product model, although quality assessment can exclude one or more bands from an individual observation.

HDU or layer What it contains Why it matters
IMAGE Calibrated surface-brightness flux density in MJy/sr; a 2040 × 2040 image array The primary calibrated signal layer. The documentation states that zodiacal-light subtraction is not applied here.
FLAGS Quality and masking information Use it to identify pixels that should not be treated as ordinary measurements.
VARIANCE Uncertainty-related information Needed for weighting, error propagation and deciding whether a faint feature is credible.
ZODI Zodiacal-light-related data Provides context for foreground emission; do not assume the primary image has already had this component removed.
PSF Spatially varying point-spread-function information Important for source fitting and careful photometry. The documented PSF is a cube with 121 planes on an 11 × 11 detector-region grid.
WCS-WAVE Wavelength-mapping information intended for visualization Useful for understanding the display. For science analysis, the documentation directs users to the CWAVE and CBAND extensions in the spectral-WCS calibration product instead.

The image dimensions and units have practical consequences. A 2040 × 2040 array contains more than four million pixels, and a spectral-image MEF is approximately 70 MB, so downloading many full files can quickly become a storage and bandwidth issue. For a single target, begin with a cutout unless detector-wide context is required.

How should I read the wavelengths and bands?

SPHEREx samples the infrared sky in 102 wavelengths, so “the band” is not one universal color channel. The Data Explorer can show a wavelength and bandpass readout for the selected view, but that display is a navigation aid.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

For scientific measurements, use the wavelength-calibration information supplied with the product. In particular, distinguish the visualization-oriented WCS-WAVE information from the CWAVE and CBAND extensions identified by the archive documentation for science analysis. Record which extension and release you used when converting pixels into wavelength-dependent quantities.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not assume that all six detector-specific spectral MEFs are present or scientifically usable for every pointing. SPHEREx performs quality assessment per band, so a missing or rejected band can be a product-quality outcome rather than a failed download.

Is a SPHEREx image already corrected for zodiacal light?

No. The official product description says that no zodiacal-light subtraction is applied to the IMAGE extension. The MEF includes a ZODI layer with zodiacal-light-related information, which you must account for according to your analysis plan.

This distinction is easy to miss because a viewer can display a visually plausible infrared image. A visually pleasing rendering does not prove that foreground emission has been removed, that flags have been applied, or that the result is ready for photometry.

Why can’t I find a newly released SPHEREx observation?

IRSA ingests new SPHEREx data weekly, and different archive interfaces can become searchable at different times. IRSA notes that new products may first appear in browsable directories, the Data Explorer and some TAP queries, while SIA2 availability can lag by approximately one day.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If an observation appears to be missing:

  1. Check the release and collection you queried. A QR3 search will not return a product that exists only in QR2.
  2. Try the Data Explorer or a browsable archive view in addition to SIA2.
  3. Check the observation date and sky coordinates for rounding or region-size mistakes.
  4. Wait for the normal ingestion interval before treating the absence as an error.
  5. When the product appears, save the exact collection, query date and access URL.

Mission schedules for later products, including all-sky data cubes and a high-reliability source catalog, are schedule statements rather than guarantees. Use the live IRSA archive to determine what is actually available.

What are the most common SPHEREx download and interpretation mistakes?

  • Looking for a JPEG or RGB photograph. The primary science delivery is a multi-extension infrared FITS product. Use a viewer for a quick rendering, then work from the FITS arrays and metadata.
  • Downloading only the primary image. Flags, variance, PSF and wavelength information affect whether a pixel can support a measurement.
  • Assuming all bands exist. Quality assessment is per band, so some observations may not contain all six detector-specific products.
  • Treating the displayed wavelength as a complete calibration. Use the documented spectral-WCS calibration extensions for analysis.
  • Assuming zodiacal light was removed. It was not subtracted from the IMAGE extension according to the product documentation.
  • Mixing release contexts without recording them. QR2 and QR3 can differ in processing and availability. Keep the collection name with every result.
  • Building download URLs manually. Use the access_url and cloud information returned by SIA2 or the generated IRSA download script.
  • Interpreting an SIA2 miss as a missing observation. Allow for the approximately one-day interface lag and weekly ingestion cycle.
  • Ignoring storage needs. At roughly 70 MB per spectral-image MEF, a batch of hundreds of files requires a deliberate storage and transfer plan.

What is a reliable end-to-end workflow?

For most readers, the following sequence balances discovery, verification and reproducibility.

  1. Define the sky target and science question. Decide whether you need a visual check, a single source, a small field or a large batch.
  2. Start in the Data Explorer. Confirm that the target is covered and inspect the available bands and readouts.
  3. Choose the release and coverage type. Select QR2 or QR3 and wide or deep deliberately; write that choice down.
  4. Use a cutout for a focused target. Request a region small enough to handle while retaining the HDUs required by your analysis.
  5. Use SIA2, PyVO or Astroquery for repetition. Save the query and returned table rather than relying on a one-time browser session.
  6. Open the MEF and inventory its HDUs. Confirm the image dimensions, units, flags, variance, zodiacal-light layer, PSF and wavelength metadata.
  7. Apply quality and calibration logic before measuring. Do not calculate source fluxes from the rendered image alone.
  8. Archive provenance. Keep the product filename, collection, query parameters, access date, cutout geometry and any processing notes with your results.

How do QR2, QR3, wide and deep differ?

QR2 and QR3 are separate Quick Release contexts, while wide and deep describe survey coverage strategies. QR3 is newer where available; QR2 remains important for earlier reprocessed data and for comparisons that were built on that release.

There is no universally correct choice. Use the release that matches the reproducibility requirements of your project, and avoid presenting a QR2 measurement and a QR3 measurement as interchangeable without checking their documentation and calibration context. Likewise, a deep-survey product should not be assumed to have the same coverage or cadence as a wide-survey product.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How we selected the workflow guidance

The workflow order follows the capabilities documented by IRSA: Data Explorer for graphical inspection, SIA2 for reproducible image discovery, cutouts for spatially focused downloads, and PyVO or Astroquery for scripted access. The file-reading guidance follows the documented MEF structure, units, quality layers, PSF cube and wavelength-calibration distinction. Release and freshness advice reflects the archive’s QR2/QR3 status and its weekly ingestion and SIA2-lag notes as of November 2026.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I open a SPHEREx FITS file without installing specialist astronomy software?

Yes. A FITS-capable desktop viewer can display the HDUs, and the IRSA Data Explorer can inspect products in a browser. For analysis, a Python environment with a FITS reader gives you direct access to arrays, headers and quality layers.

Do SPHEREx data include ordinary visible-light wavelengths?

No. SPHEREx is an infrared survey with 102 wavelength channels. A displayed color image is a visualization created from infrared data, not a conventional visible-light camera exposure.

How much storage should I allow for a SPHEREx download batch?

IRSA describes each spectral-image MEF as approximately 70 MB. Multiply that figure by the number of detector files and leave additional space for cutouts, query tables, intermediate products and backups; use cutouts when full detector context is unnecessary.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does a SPHEREx target have fewer bands than expected?

Quality assessment is performed per band, and the product model does not guarantee that every pointing has all six detector-specific spectral MEFs. Check the returned product metadata and flags before assuming the archive or download is incomplete.

Where should I look for current SPHEREx product availability?

Use the live IRSA SPHEREx archive and Data Explorer rather than relying on a fixed mission schedule. New data are ingested weekly, and SIA2 can trail other archive interfaces by about a day.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
