To set up NanoClaw on a Linux VPS, install the repository’s supported Node.js and pnpm versions, install Docker Engine, clone the official repository, and run bash nanoclaw.sh. That script prepares the host and guides onboarding. The current repository lists Linux, Docker Engine, Node.js 22.23.4+, 24.22.1+, or 26.12.1+, and pnpm 10+ as the relevant requirements. It does not publish a minimum VPS size or a production-ready systemd service recipe, so capacity planning and keeping the process running after logout are operator decisions rather than official NanoClaw requirements.
This tutorial separates documented NanoClaw behavior from practical VPS administration. You will finish with a working installation, a way to verify the host and containers, and a checklist for securing and maintaining it.
What do you need before installing NanoClaw on a VPS?
Prepare a Linux VPS with SSH access, an account that can use sudo, and enough disk, memory, and CPU for your expected sessions. NanoClaw’s repository is the authoritative source for its current runtime list; it names Linux, Docker Engine, pnpm 10 or newer, and these Node.js lines: 22.23.4 or newer in the 22 line, 24.22.1 or newer in the 24 line, or 26.12.1 or newer in the 26 line. The project website has used a broader “Node.js 20+” description, but the version-specific repository statement is the safer target for a new Linux VPS installation.
Read the current instructions in the official NanoClaw repository before choosing a runtime. The installer may install or update dependencies as part of setup, so the checks below are designed to catch an incompatible host before you start onboarding.

| Component | What the repository specifies | Why it is needed |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | Linux; macOS is also listed, and Windows is supported through WSL2 | The VPS host runs the Node.js coordinator and Docker Engine |
| Node.js | 22.23.4+, 24.22.1+, or 26.12.1+ | Runs NanoClaw’s host process |
| pnpm | 10+ | Installs and manages the project’s JavaScript dependencies |
| Container runtime | Docker Engine on Linux | Runs isolated per-session agent containers |
| Git | Required to clone the repository | Downloads the official source tree |
| Claude Code | Listed by the repository for customization, debugging, setup recovery, and channel skills | Useful for development and recovery workflows; it is not the container runtime |
No official document in the supplied material gives a minimum vCPU count, RAM amount, disk size, bandwidth allowance, or supported VPS provider. Do not treat a particular server plan as a NanoClaw requirement. Start with a plan that leaves headroom for the host, Docker images, logs, and the number of concurrent sessions you expect, then measure actual use.
How does NanoClaw use Docker on a VPS?
NanoClaw has a Node.js host process that routes messages and coordinates a separate agent container for each session. The repository describes inbound and outbound SQLite databases as the exchange mechanism between the host and those containers. This means the VPS is running both a long-lived coordinator and short-lived or persistent container workloads, rather than a single monolithic process.
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallCrashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThe security documentation describes unprivileged containers and explicit filesystem mounts. It says the project root, .env, the external-mount allowlist, and real credentials are not mounted into the agent container. Those are important design boundaries, but they are not a blanket guarantee that an incorrectly configured host, credential, network, or mounted directory is safe.
Two defaults deserve special attention:
- Egress lockdown is off unless you configure it.
- Container CPU and memory caps are unset unless you configure them.
On a shared or production VPS, decide deliberately whether to add outbound network restrictions and resource limits. Treat those controls as your operational configuration, not as settings the installer automatically enables.
How should you prepare a Linux VPS?
The following preparation is ordinary VPS administration, not a published NanoClaw sizing or hardening prescription. Use the commands appropriate for your distribution and provider.
1. Connect with a non-root administrative account
Use SSH with a key whenever your provider supports it. Log in as a named user with sudo access instead of doing the installation as root. Confirm the account and operating system:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
whoami
uname -a
cat /etc/os-release
If your provider supplied only a root login, create an administrative user, add it to the distribution’s sudo group, install your public key, and test a second SSH session before disabling root login. Keep an existing administrative session open while changing SSH settings so a mistake does not lock you out.
2. Apply operating-system updates
Use your distribution’s normal update process, then reboot if the kernel or a critical runtime was updated. For Debian- or Ubuntu-family systems, the familiar pattern is:
sudo apt update
sudo apt upgrade
Package names and commands differ on other distributions. Do not mix package-manager instructions between distributions.
3. Check storage and memory before adding Docker images
df -h
free -h
nproc
These commands do not establish a NanoClaw minimum; they simply show whether the selected VPS has usable headroom. Docker images, container logs, SQLite data, and operating-system updates all consume storage. If you expect several simultaneous sessions, monitor memory and disk after onboarding instead of relying on a plan label.

4. Decide on firewall and SSH policy
Allow SSH from the addresses you actually use and expose only the application ports you have intentionally configured. NanoClaw’s documented setup does not replace a host firewall, SSH key policy, intrusion monitoring, backups, or an update schedule. Those are VPS-operator responsibilities.
How do you install the required Node.js and pnpm versions?
Install one of the repository’s supported Node.js lines and verify the exact version before running the NanoClaw script. Use your distribution’s package system, a version manager, or another trusted Node.js distribution method that can provide the required patch level. The important point is the resulting version, not the installation method.
node --version
npm --version
pnpm --version
The Node version must satisfy one of the repository’s current lines: 22.23.4 or newer, 24.22.1 or newer, or 26.12.1 or newer. A machine that reports Node 20 may match the broad website wording but still fail the repository’s more specific current requirement statement.
If pnpm is missing, enable the package-manager mechanism supported by your Node installation or install pnpm 10 or newer using your organization’s standard method. Then run the version check again. Do not continue with a major-version mismatch; changing Node after dependencies have been installed can leave a confusing partial setup.
Recommended Free Tools
Keep the runtime available to the same Unix user who will run NanoClaw. If you install Node through a per-user version manager, make sure the shell used for onboarding and future restarts loads that manager; a service launched with a minimal environment may otherwise report “node: command not found.”
How do you install Docker Engine on the VPS?
Linux uses Docker Engine rather than Docker Desktop. Install Docker Engine by following the instructions for your exact distribution and release from the Docker documentation or your provider’s maintained image. The NanoClaw repository confirms Docker Engine support but does not prescribe one VPS image, package repository, or daemon configuration.
After installation, verify both the client and daemon:
docker --version
docker info
docker run --rm hello-world
If docker info fails with a permission error, either run Docker through the administrative mechanism your distribution documents or add the installation user to the Docker group, then start a new login session. Group membership is effectively administrative access to the host, so apply it only to trusted users. If the daemon is stopped, enable and start it using your distribution’s service manager before running NanoClaw.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsRemove the temporary test container only if your environment requires explicit cleanup; the --rm flag normally removes it automatically. Confirm that the daemon has enough disk space for the images NanoClaw will pull during onboarding.
What is the official NanoClaw installation command?
The documented entry point is a three-part sequence: clone the official repository, enter the checkout, and run the installer script.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Clone the repository:
git clone https://github.com/nanocoai/nanoclaw.git - Enter the new directory:
cd nanoclaw - Start the guided setup:
bash nanoclaw.sh
The script prepares the machine and guides onboarding. It can install or update dependencies when needed, so read each prompt and its output rather than assuming the process is silent or non-interactive. Run it as the administrative application user, not as root, unless the repository explicitly instructs otherwise.
If the script stops, copy the first meaningful error and resolve that prerequisite before rerunning it. Repeatedly launching the script without fixing the reported Node, pnpm, Docker, permissions, or network problem can make diagnosis harder.
What should you do during NanoClaw onboarding?
Follow the prompts displayed by nanoclaw.sh and record the choices you make. The supplied documentation confirms that the script guides setup, but it does not provide a stable prompt-by-prompt transcript that can be reproduced safely for every release.
Protect environment files and credentials
Enter credentials only in the configuration mechanism requested by the installer. Keep any resulting .env or secret file readable only by the account that needs it, and never paste its contents into a support ticket or public log. The security documentation specifically says the real credentials and the project’s .env are not mounted into agent containers; that boundary is useful only if you do not deliberately mount them elsewhere.
Review filesystem mounts
Approve only directories the session actually needs. NanoClaw’s model uses explicit mounts and an external-mount allowlist, so a mount is a meaningful authority boundary. A directory mounted read-write can be changed by code running in that container; prefer read-only access where the workflow allows it.
Choose network and resource controls consciously
Because egress lockdown is off by default, decide whether agents should be able to make outbound connections. Likewise, configure CPU and memory caps if one session must not be able to consume all host resources. Validate these choices from the resulting Docker configuration rather than assuming a default limit exists.
How do you verify that NanoClaw is working?
Verification should cover the host runtime, Docker, and an actual onboarding path. Start with the versions and the checkout:
node --version
pnpm --version
docker info
git -C nanoclaw status
Then inspect running containers:
docker ps
The exact container names and labels can change between releases, so do not build an automation script around an assumed name. Confirm that a test interaction creates or uses the expected per-session container and that messages can travel through the host process. If the repository’s current README or installer prints a release-specific health check, use that check as the final authority.
Inspect resource use while testing:
docker stats
Stop the command with Ctrl+C. Look for unexpected memory growth, an unbounded container, or a host disk approaching capacity. A successful first message proves the installation path worked; it does not prove that your chosen limits, backups, firewall, or restart behavior are production-ready.

How do you keep NanoClaw running after an SSH session ends?
The retrieved official material does not establish a systemd unit, Docker Compose file, supervisor configuration, or other persistent-service recipe. Do not present a custom unit as an official NanoClaw requirement. Decide how your VPS will launch and supervise the host process, document the Node and pnpm paths it needs, and test recovery after a reboot.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
For a temporary trial, an operator may keep the interactive process inside a terminal multiplexer, but that is not the same as a restart policy or production service. For a long-running deployment, use the process manager your organization already supports, configure an explicit working directory and environment-file permissions, and capture stdout and stderr in a log system with rotation. Ensure the supervisor starts Docker before NanoClaw and restarts the host process only under a deliberate policy; otherwise a crash loop can fill logs or hide a configuration error.
Test the complete lifecycle: start the process, disconnect SSH, reconnect, reboot the VPS during a maintenance window, and verify that the host and required containers return. Because no official service file is supplied, keep this lifecycle configuration under your own change control and revisit it after NanoClaw upgrades.
How should you secure a NanoClaw VPS?
Use NanoClaw’s documented isolation features as one layer in a broader host-security plan.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Limit mounts. Do not expose the project root,
.env, credential stores, SSH keys, or unrelated host directories to an agent container. Use the external-mount allowlist deliberately. - Review privileges. Keep the host process and administrative commands under a dedicated account. Treat membership in the Docker group as powerful host access.
- Control egress. Egress lockdown is disabled by default. If agents do not need general Internet access, configure a restrictive policy and test the channels and APIs that must remain reachable.
- Cap resources. CPU and memory limits are unset by default. Set limits appropriate to your concurrency target and monitor for throttling or out-of-memory kills.
- Harden the host. Patch the operating system, restrict inbound ports, use SSH keys, remove unused packages, and review authentication logs.
- Back up state. NanoClaw uses inbound and outbound SQLite databases, but the supplied documentation does not specify their paths. Identify the actual database and configuration locations on your installation, stop or quiesce writes before a file-level backup, and test restoring to an isolated VPS.
- Protect logs. Logs can contain message content, identifiers, or error details. Set retention and access rules before exposing them to a central logging system.
Isolation boundaries reduce accidental exposure between the host and an agent; they do not eliminate vulnerabilities in the host kernel, Docker daemon, mounted data, credentials, application dependencies, or network policy.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What are the most common installation failures?
“Unsupported Node.js version”
Run node --version and compare it with the repository’s supported lines. Install a qualifying patch version, open a new shell if your version manager requires it, and rerun the check before launching bash nanoclaw.sh.
“pnpm: command not found” or a major-version error
Install pnpm 10 or newer through your approved Node tooling, then verify pnpm --version. If multiple Node installations exist, check command -v node and command -v pnpm so the shell is using the same installation you tested.
Docker permission or daemon errors
Run docker info and check the daemon status using your distribution’s service manager. Fix the user’s Docker access or start the daemon, then create a fresh login session if group membership changed. Do not “fix” the error by running the entire application as root without understanding the resulting ownership and security impact.
The installer cannot download dependencies
Check DNS, outbound firewall rules, system time, proxy variables, and available disk space. Because egress lockdown is a configurable NanoClaw setting and is off by default, a failed download is more likely to be a host network or package-registry problem; still inspect any policy you added.
A session container cannot reach a required service
Review the egress policy and the explicit mounts selected during onboarding. A container may be intentionally unable to see a host file or reach a network destination. Grant only the smallest access required, then repeat a controlled test rather than opening all host paths or unrestricted network access.
The process works until SSH disconnects
This indicates a process-lifetime problem, not necessarily a NanoClaw installation failure. Use your documented supervisor or a temporary terminal multiplexer for testing, then perform the reboot and reconnect test described above before calling the VPS production-ready.

How do you update or recover a NanoClaw installation?
Keep the checkout and runtime version under change control. Before changing code or dependencies, record the current commit, Node and pnpm versions, active configuration, mount allowlist, and resource/network policies. Make a tested backup of the SQLite and configuration data you identified on the host.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhen the repository’s current instructions call for an update, pull the new revision and run the documented installer or update path from that revision. The setup script is documented as able to install or update dependencies when needed, but release-specific migration steps take precedence over a generic command sequence. Read the release notes and installer output, stop the host process if the update requires exclusive access to state, and verify containers and message flow afterward.
If recovery is required, preserve logs and the failing checkout before deleting anything. Revert to the last known-good commit or restore the tested backup in an isolated directory, then confirm that credentials, mounts, and database ownership are correct. Do not restore a database into a newer or older schema without following the release’s migration instructions.
How should you choose a VPS for NanoClaw?
There is no verified provider comparison or official minimum specification in the available NanoClaw material. Choose a provider by operational fit, not by an assumed NanoClaw plan.
| Decision area | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Linux image | Is the distribution and release supported by your organization, and can you receive security updates? |
| Docker path | Can you install and maintain Docker Engine without relying on an unsupported custom image? |
| Storage | Is there room for the OS, Docker layers, SQLite state, logs, backups, and future updates? |
| Memory and CPU | Can the host tolerate your expected number of concurrent sessions while respecting any caps you set? |
| Network controls | Does the provider offer inbound firewall rules, private networking, and usable outbound-policy controls? |
| Recovery | Are snapshots, block-volume backups, region changes, and console access available when SSH fails? |
| Location and latency | Is the region appropriate for your users and the external services your channels require? |
| Support | Can you obtain help with the host, storage, and network layers that NanoClaw itself does not document? |
Measure your own workload after a controlled trial. A small installation with one light session may behave very differently from a multi-session deployment that retains logs and databases for a long period.

- Send a controlled test interaction and inspect
docker psanddocker stats. - Document your supervisor, backup locations, firewall rules, and recovery procedure.
- Test logout, restart, reboot, restore, and an update before inviting real users.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can NanoClaw run on a VPS without Docker Desktop?
Yes. The repository identifies Docker Engine as the Linux runtime; Docker Desktop is listed for macOS and Windows. On a Linux VPS, install and verify the Engine daemon instead of trying to install Desktop.
Is Node.js 20 sufficient for a new NanoClaw VPS installation?
The project website has used a broad Node.js 20+ description, but the repository’s current version-specific statement lists 22.23.4+, 24.22.1+, or 26.12.1+. Use one of those repository-listed lines to avoid an installer rejection.
Does NanoClaw include an official systemd service file?
The available official material documents the clone-and-script installation path but does not establish a systemd unit or another persistent-service recipe. You must choose, document, and test the process supervisor used on your VPS.
How large should my VPS be for NanoClaw?
No official minimum CPU, memory, disk, or bandwidth values are published in the referenced material. Size the host for your expected concurrent sessions, Docker layers, SQLite state, and logs, then adjust from measurements rather than treating a provider plan as an official requirement.
