Choose Classic Prestige in Modern Warfare 4 if you want a 20% XP boost, one Permanent Unlock Token and extra cosmetic rewards badly enough to rebuild your level unlocks and Create-a-Class slots. Choose Regular Prestige if keeping your current classes and unlocked items matters more than those bonuses. The choice appears again when you enter each new Prestige Level, so your decision can change between Prestiges.
What is the difference between Classic and Regular Prestige in MW4?
Both options restart your player progression at the beginning of a new Prestige. The difference is whether you exchange your level unlocks and Create-a-Class progress for faster XP and additional rewards.
| Decision point | Classic Prestige | Regular Prestige |
|---|---|---|
| Player level | Resets to the start of the new Prestige | Restarts at Level 1 |
| Level unlocks | Reset and earned again | Kept |
| Create-a-Class | Reset | Kept |
| XP | 20% boost | No Classic boost stated |
| Permanent Unlock Token | One token | None |
| Rewards | Shared rewards plus Classic bonus cosmetics and Prime variants | Most rewards are shared, without the Classic bonus package |
| Next choice | Choose Classic or Regular again after completing the Prestige Level | Choose Classic or Regular again after completing the Prestige Level |
Activision describes Classic as the traditional Prestige route: level unlocks and Create-a-Class progress are reset in exchange for the 20% XP boost, one token and bonus cosmetics. Regular lets you restart from Level 1 while keeping those items and classes.

Should you choose Classic Prestige?
Classic is the better fit when the long-term rewards outweigh the short-term inconvenience of re-earning gear.

Choose Classic when you want faster progression
The 20% XP boost applies to the leveling journey after you enter Classic. It is most valuable if you expect to play enough matches for the boost to compound across the Prestige and later levels.
Choose Classic for the Permanent Unlock Token
Classic grants one Permanent Unlock Token. It permanently unlocks one available Level Unlock item for the rest of your leveling journey, including later Classic Prestiges. Activision’s example uses the Throwing Knife, which would otherwise be earned at Level 48, and recommends considering perks, field upgrades, killstreaks and equipment before spending the token on a weapon.
Choose Classic for the extra cosmetics
The Classic track adds bonus cosmetic rewards and Prime variants to the rewards shared by both paths. For example, Prestige 1’s Level 50 reward is The Vet on Regular and The Vet Prime on Classic; both are weapon blueprints for the Mosin-Nagant marksman rifle.
Should you choose Regular Prestige?
Regular is the safer choice when your immediate classes and unlocked equipment are more important than bonus rewards or accelerated XP.

Keep established multiplayer classes
Regular preserves Create-a-Class content, so you can continue using a setup built around your preferred weapons, perks, field upgrades and equipment without waiting for each item to unlock again.
Avoid rebuilding late-level unlocks
Regular also keeps level unlocks. That matters if you are completing weapon challenges that require a late-unlocked attachment or equipment item, or if your available play time is limited and you do not want to repeat the unlock path.
Accept the trade-off
Regular does not provide the Classic 20% XP boost, Permanent Unlock Token or Classic bonus cosmetic package. You still receive the majority of the standard Prestige rewards.
How do I decide between Classic and Regular?
Use your next play session and your collection goals as the deciding factors, rather than treating either path as universally optimal.

What exactly gets reset in Classic Prestige?
Classic resets player-level progression, level unlocks and Create-a-Class progress for the new Prestige. You rebuild those unlocks as you level again, while the Permanent Unlock Token can keep one selected Level Unlock item available through later Classic Prestiges.
This reset concerns the player progression system. Weapon levels, weapon camos and attachments are tracked in a separate weapon-progression system, so selecting Classic or Regular is not the same as prestiging an individual weapon.
How many Prestige levels are in MW4?
The progression structure lists 10 Prestige Levels followed by 1,000 Prestige Master levels. Multiplayer has 55 player levels, while DMZ has 70. The Classic-versus-Regular decision applies to player Prestige; DMZ Operator Prestige and Weapon Prestige are separate systems.

How do I enter Prestige?
After reaching the maximum player level, open the profile and level area, then enter the Progression menu.
- Open your Profile and Level area.
- Select Progression.
- Open the Prestige tab.
- Review the Classic and Regular consequences, then confirm the path that matches your priorities.
What should I spend the Permanent Unlock Token on?
Spend it on an item that you use often and would otherwise lose access to during every Classic reset. A perk, field upgrade, killstreak or equipment item can provide value across many classes; the Throwing Knife example shows that a high-level equipment unlock can also be a practical target. The best choice depends on your playstyle, so check the item’s normal unlock level before confirming.
Does Classic or Regular affect weapon and DMZ Operator Prestige?
No. Classic and Regular govern player-level Prestige. Weapon Prestige and DMZ Operator Prestige are separate progression systems, and the player-level choice does not replace or rename either one.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I change from Classic to Regular before finishing a Prestige?
The documented choice is presented when you enter a new Prestige Level and returns after you complete that level. The progression guidance does not describe changing paths mid-level, so treat the selection as a decision for the Prestige you are entering.

Do Classic bonus rewards include gameplay advantages?
The documented Classic additions are a 20% XP boost, one Permanent Unlock Token and bonus cosmetics such as Prime variants. The reward description does not identify a separate combat-stat advantage.
Is the 20% XP boost applied to DMZ levels too?
The 20% figure is specified as part of Classic player Prestige. DMZ has its own 70-level progression and separate Operator Prestige system, so do not assume the boost applies to every DMZ progression track.
How should a new player prepare before choosing Classic?
Record the unlock levels of the perks, equipment and field upgrades you use most, then decide whether one of them is worth the Permanent Unlock Token. If you still need several late-level items for challenges, Regular avoids interrupting that work.
