To survive a solo MW4 DMZ tank extraction, treat the repaired Air Base tank as a temporary escort for your operator—not as something you can take home. Collect its four parts, install them at Chang-san Air Base, keep the vehicle moving, refuel and repair it at a Gas Station, then use its cannon to protect the Monarch landing zone and board the helicopter yourself.
That plan applies to the stationary wreck in the Tank Depot or Tank Workshop at the rear of the Chang-san Air Base Armory. It does not apply to the roaming Main NK Battle Tank, also called the Tank Commander, which is an enemy boss. The repaired player tank lasts for that match; there is no confirmed way to extract its hull for a later deployment.
Which tank can you repair in MW4 DMZ?
Only the wreck in the Tank Depot or Tank Workshop at Chang-san Air Base can be rebuilt with the four tank parts. The Main NK Battle Tank, or Tank Commander, is a roaming enemy Commander; the repair components do not fix it. Gamer.org reported on 29 October 2026 that the Tank Commander cannot be repaired with the player-tank components.

| Tank | What it is | What to do as a solo operator |
|---|---|---|
| Air Base player tank | A stationary wreck in the Armory’s Tank Depot or Tank Workshop. Installing four parts makes it a two-seat driveable vehicle. | Repair it, maintain it during the match, and use it to cover your route or extraction. Leave it behind when you exfil. |
| Main NK Battle Tank / Tank Commander | A roaming enemy Commander. Developer preview footage described reactive armor that reduces RPG damage. | Do not approach it expecting to repair or commandeer it. If hunting it, bring anti-armor equipment, cover, and a retreat route. |
NuriGO Mall is a reported Tank Commander encounter area, not the location of the repairable wreck. DMZ Codex, updated 29 October 2026, says there is no Lieutenant-style paid intel purchase that guarantees the next Commander hunt. A reliable launch-version rocket count for destroying the Commander has also not been established.

Can you play MW4 DMZ solo, and is there a solo-only queue?
You can deploy alone by turning Squad Fill off on the Ready Up screen, but Activision does not advertise a solo-only or PvE-only playlist. Plan for other squads to be present: matchmaking may try to group similar squad sizes, but full trios can still enter a solo operator’s match.
Polygon’s 21 October 2026 guide places the Squad Fill toggle at the bottom left of the operator or inventory screen after choosing Story Mission, Dynamic Operation, or Free Roam. Activision’s FOB guide says Squad Fill puts two allied players into your deployment and recommends it if you do not already have friends to play with. That is a separate choice from whether you can enter alone.
- For a tank run, choose Story Missions. Operation Iron Citadel is the documented route into the Armory where the Tank Alternator is found. The mission also gives you a defined objective rather than requiring an improvised trip into the bunker.
- Free Roam has a different use. Activision recommends it for finding 3D Printer Ingredients; it is not the documented Armory-access route for Operation Iron Citadel.
- Avoid Hunt Operators Dynamic Ops for this job. Activision’s Hajin guidance warns that this operation means facing a full rival squad, an unnecessary risk while trying to assemble a tank.
Solo does not mean the map is safe. In launch-week community reports compiled by Modern Warfare 4 Wiki and Conquest Capped, one solo player reached about DMZ Level 22 in 6–8 hours and encountered pre-made squads only 3–4 times. That is one reported experience, not a matchmaking guarantee. Activision’s own June 2026 description says Hajin offers “numerous paths to choose from”; it does not promise isolated solo instances.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Should you collect all four parts in one deployment?
No. For a solo operator, it is safer to collect parts over several deployments, exfil with what you find, and bring the set back for the repair run. Chang-san’s exterior is rated Critical and its bunker Extreme in Activision’s threat guidance, so trying to search, clear the Armory, and repair in one visit stacks several high-risk tasks into one match.
The tank requires four loose world-loot parts: Tank Battery, Tank Alternator, Tank Plugs, and Tank Water Pump. Gamer.org, Gaming ProMax, DETONATED, Gfinity, and TechnoSports all list those components. Community guides describe randomized spawn points; they are not ordinary container loot.
| Part | Reported search area | Solo planning note |
|---|---|---|
| Tank Battery | Underground Hangar or bunker tunnels beneath the Air Base Hangar, including corners, storage rooms, and wall shelves. | Search only as far into the underground area as your route and remaining time allow. |
| Tank Alternator | Restricted Air Base Armory, accessed through Operation Iron Citadel, a changing keypad code, and an access card. Northern bunker spawns have also been reported, but are not well confirmed. | This is the logistical bottleneck. Plan a separate, deliberate Armory visit rather than assuming a quick exterior search will find it. |
| Tank Plugs | Western mechanic shacks; underground Hangar workbenches and shelves; and areas beneath parked jets. | Check exposed work areas, but do not linger if guards or rival operators are closing in. |
| Tank Water Pump | Northern Chang-san rooftops, building corners, shelves, fuel tanks, and cabinets near the Hangar entrance. | Use an approach and exit route before climbing to exposed rooftops. |
There is no confirmed requirement to bring every part out in the same match. Extract with the parts you have, stash them, and return when you can complete the set. This breaks the job into a quieter logistics phase and a high-risk repair phase instead of forcing you to carry every valuable component through the entire Air Base at once.

How do you get into the Armory for the Alternator?
- Select Operation Iron Citadel as the mission route.
- Find the Air Base Access Card – Multi Use.
- Upgrade the card at a terminal in Admin Complex No. 2.
- Collect the three code notes and work out the keypad code. The code changes every deployment, so a code from a previous match should not be assumed to work.
- Enter the code and use the access card to get into the Armory. DMZMap’s listed Iron Citadel steps continue with clearing the Armory, planting explosives on three strike aircraft, and exfiltrating.
Do not confuse the repair wreck’s Tank Depot or Tank Workshop with guides that use “Tank Depot” for a Lieutenant Bale bunker encounter. For the player tank, the useful landmark is the wreck at the back of the Air Base Armory and the interaction point at its rear.
How should you protect parts between deployments?
Put parts you cannot afford to lose in a Secure Slot if your backpack has one. GamerFuzion, citing official FOB and Hajin material, identifies the Medium Backpack as the first backpack with Secure slots and reports its craft cost as 50 Synthetics plus 5 Rigid Synthetics. Community terminology varies: GameRant calls a protected slot a Reserve Slot. The exact Secure Slot count by backpack has not been published by Activision, so check the item’s in-game protection before relying on it.
How do you repair the Air Base tank?
Take all four parts to the wreck in the Tank Depot or Tank Workshop at the back of the Chang-san Air Base Armory. Install them at the rear of the wreck, wait for the “Vehicle Repaired” prompt, then open the hangar doors and drive out.
- Enter the Air Base Armory using the Iron Citadel access route when the Alternator requires it.
- Find the stationary tank wreck at the rear of the Armory’s Tank Depot or Tank Workshop.
- Walk around to the rear of the wreck and interact to install the Tank Battery, Tank Alternator, Tank Plugs, and Tank Water Pump.
- Wait until the game displays Vehicle Repaired. Do not assume the installation is finished before the prompt appears.
- Open the hangar doors and drive out. Decide your Gas Station route and extraction destination before making the tank’s noise and presence the focus of the area.
Gaming ProMax describes this repair interaction and exit sequence. The tank carries two players, according to Gamer.org and Fanboy Destroy, so a solo operator can occupy the driver’s seat alone. The published material does not establish whether one person can operate the driver and cannon positions without switching seats; check the in-game controls rather than assuming a particular seat arrangement.
How do you keep the tank fueled and repaired?
Use a Gas Station. Activision’s 5 October 2026 Hajin vehicle intel says commandeered vehicles have finite armor and fuel and must be repaired and refueled at a Gas Station. Community tank guides say to park under the canopy near the pumps; refueling and repair then happen automatically.
- Route to a pump, not to lootable gas cans. DETONATED (26 October 2026) and Gfinity (28 October 2026) report that gas canisters do not refuel the tank. Use Gas Station icons on the Tac Map.
- Top up early. DETONATED describes the tank as consuming fuel constantly while driven. Make the nearby Chang-san Gas Station your first maintenance stop rather than taking a long cross-map drive on an unknown fuel reserve.
- Use the canopy and pumps. Gaming ProMax and TechnoSports describe the Gas Station service as automatic when parked under the canopy near the pumps. The exact interaction range and whether combat interrupts service are not established in the public guidance.
- Remember this is DMZ-specific upkeep. Activision explicitly distinguishes DMZ vehicles, which require repair and refueling, from Warzone vehicles, which do not.
Chang-san has one Gas Station marked near the Air Base on the official Tac Map, according to DMZMap. That makes a local top-up practical, but it does not make the tank self-sufficient: identify the next service point before committing to a long drive. There is no published figure for the player tank’s fuel duration, hit points, armor equivalent, or how many launcher shots destroy it. Do not plan around an assumed range or damage threshold.

How should a solo defend the tank from squads and launchers?
Keep moving, avoid predictable routes, and treat engine noise as a warning that other operators may come looking. Community combat guidance identifies RPG-8 and JOKR users as threats to a stationary tank. The tank is a strong tool for open-ground pressure, not a guarantee against heavy armor or a coordinated squad.
Move before a launcher user gets a clean shot
A tank parked in the open is easier to target than one changing position. Avoid stopping on a skyline, beside an exposed road, or at the same predictable point while you search menus or wait for an extraction helicopter. If you must pause, choose cover and keep an exit path. The public guides do not establish a hit-point figure or a launcher shot count for the player tank, so no specific number of hits should be treated as safe.
Choose targets the cannon can handle
Gamer.org and Fanboy Destroy report that the main cannon can destroy many ordinary vehicles with one direct hit and is useful against Deathstalkers. They caution that other tanks and heavy armor may need more shots; Fanboy Destroy says the vehicle is especially effective against Deathstalkers but is not the right tool against other tanks. If heavy armor or another tank controls the route, disengage or fight from cover rather than trading shots on the assumption that your hull will win.
Do not let the tank choose the fight for you
A loud vehicle can draw Operators, while fighting raises the POI Threat and Hostiles Kill Count. Activision says that when the meter fills, an enemy Hunt Squad is dispatched and you become Marked for Death. Its June blog describes escalating responses that can include attack helicopters, heavily armored troops, and Deathstalkers. Do not farm enemies on the way to extraction unless you deliberately want that escalation.
Activision’s solo-friendly Stealth Meter is valuable while collecting parts, but the repaired tank marks a change of plan: it is the loud phase. The official June 2026 blog says the meter helps solo players control combat against AI, and official Hajin advice recommends melee weapons, throwing knives, or suppressed shots to move through higher-threat areas without being noticed. Those tools support quiet looting; they do not conceal the tank once you drive it.
When should you leave the vehicle?
Get out and fight on foot if the tank is cornered in a tight space, as Gaming ProMax advises, or if a rival squad has a clear anti-armor position and you have a safer route on foot. The vehicle’s two-seat capacity also means a solo driver lacks the infantry support that a squad could provide. Gaming ProMax warns that a tank alone can be isolated and destroyed by a coordinated squad. Do not stay inside merely because you invested time in the repair.

How do you use the tank to survive extraction?
Use the tank to hold open ground and protect the landing zone while the Monarch approaches; board the helicopter yourself and leave the vehicle behind. Activision describes the Monarch as a non-player twin-rotor heavy-lift helicopter that handles friendly forces’ extraction. It is your ride home, not a way to transport the tank.

Find an enabled extraction point on the Tac Map and look for its green smoke in the world. Before calling, check nearby buildings and likely approaches from cover. Community guidance warns that exfil sites can be ambush points.
- Refuel before the call if the tank needs it. A dry vehicle can leave you without mobility while the helicopter is inbound. Visit a Gas Station on the route rather than starting the landing-zone hold with low fuel.
- Call the helicopter and take a position with a retreat route. The call is free according to MW4.buzz; the DMZ Cash costs in the Deploy menu are for infil choices, not a fee at the exfil pad.
- Hold the landing zone during the inbound wait. MW4.buzz reports about one minute from call to arrival in the live build. Use the tank’s cannon against threats you can safely engage, but watch the approaches and do not remain stationary if launchers or rival vehicles appear.
- Board as soon as the Monarch lands. Community live-build reports put the “EXFIL DEPARTING” window at roughly 30–35 seconds: MW4.buzz reports about 35 seconds and Conquest Capped reports 30 seconds. Treat that as a reported range, not an official timer. Leave the tank and get aboard before the departure window closes.
The tank’s job at the pad is to make the approach and wait safer, not to sit on the ramp. Activision has not confirmed whether the hull can physically block boarding, so do not park it where it could interfere. Once the helicopter lands, prioritize the operator’s seat in the Monarch over trying to preserve the vehicle.
When is a different extraction choice better?
| Option | What it offers | Trade-off for a solo tank run |
|---|---|---|
| Monarch helicopter | The default exfil route; called at a marked point and arrives as a non-player helicopter. | The call is conspicuous and the pad must be held during the inbound and departure windows. |
| Fulton balloon | A reported alternate extraction method. | Use it as an alternative when appropriate; the available public details do not establish a tank-specific Fulton procedure. |
| Exfil flare | Signals an extraction at the chosen location. | Activision, quoted by HowToVideoGame, describes flares as “extremely loud and visible from great distances.” Scout first and assume nearby squads can notice it. |
If a public pad is watched, do not force a tank duel just to preserve the vehicle. You can wait for a better opportunity, take another route, or use the mission’s planned exfil if the mission supports it. Conquest Capped reports that Story Missions end with a guaranteed exfil and take 10–15 minutes; that is a community report, not an official universal timer. It may provide an off-ramp during Operation Iron Citadel, but it still extracts the operator, not the tank.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which solo survival tools help if you have to abandon the tank?
Choose recovery tools for the moment when the vehicle can no longer protect you. A revive or exfil trait does not make a contested pad safe, but it can give a solo operator a recovery window that a squadmate would otherwise provide.
| Tool or trait | What it does | Practical use |
|---|---|---|
| Tourniquet | The Infinity Ward AMA, as reported by GamerFuzion in 2026, says a Tourniquet leaves you Wounded at 100 health rather than the 150-health spawn maximum. | Useful for getting back up, but the reduced health leaves less margin if you are immediately attacked. |
| Medkit | Activision’s recipe text says it repairs wounds, restores full health, and lets you use a Tourniquet to get back to your feet from Last Stand. | Carry it for recovery after a fight, especially if you expect to leave the tank and defend the pad on foot. |
| Self-Revive Kit | A separate loadout item recommended in community solo guides. | Use it as an independent recovery option when available; do not mistake it for armor or a way to survive repeated fire. |
| Possum (Warfighter) | Activision describes a once-per-match Self Revive into Last Stand from death, restoring health to maximum. | DMZ Radar reports that after the 28 October 2026 update it cannot trigger while the squad that killed you is nearby or before four minutes have passed. Do not plan on an immediate rescue. |
| Free Revive (Survivalist) | Automatically repairs your first Wound. | Provides a separate wound buffer; it is not a substitute for a planned exit route. |
| Die Hard (Survivalist) | Approaching an exfil in Last Stand calls it automatically and grants infinite bleed-out time while in Last Stand, according to Activision. | Useful if forced away from the tank, but reaching the exfil while under fire remains the challenge. |
| Expedited Extraction (Survivalist) | DMZ Radar describes it as making exfils arrive much faster. | Can reduce the time a solo must hold a pad, but confirm the trait’s current in-game description. |
| Viper Sense | Activision’s example trait list says it conceals you from thermal optics and AI targeting. | Supports an on-foot escape or quieter approach; it does not make a moving tank invisible. |
Community solo guides also mention Overwatch, which keeps UAV towers up, UAV Upgrade, and Thermal Padding for UAV concealment. Conquest Capped reports these picks in solo extraction videos and guides, but the official public trait example names Viper Sense for thermal concealment. Check the current in-game description before building a plan around a trait whose effect is reported by community sources.
For the quiet part-farming phase, carry a suppressed primary, a Secure-slot backpack, and a 2-plate vest or better if you expect a player fight, as Conquest Capped recommends. The official Stealth Meter shifts from white to yellow to orange with an audio cue; go prone or take cover when it warns that enemies are close. GamerFuzion, attributing reporting to Screen Rant and Infinity Ward, says suppressors affect the star/threat system, but that wording is interview reporting rather than the official blog’s phrasing. Confirm the current in-game behavior rather than treating that report as a guaranteed invisibility effect.

What should you do if the extraction area is too dangerous?
Do not let a repaired vehicle turn a bad extraction into a forced fight. A tank is useful against AI and light vehicles in open ground, but its engine, firing, and presence can advertise your location. If the pad is watched by a prepared squad, preserve the operator first.
- Scout before activating the exfil. Check nearby structures and sightlines from cover. The green smoke and call can draw attention; HowToVideoGame’s Activision-based advice notes that flares are visible and loud.
- Do not collect a Lieutenant Dog Tag Case on the way out unless you are ready to leave. Activision says picking it up broadcasts your position to every Operator, making a fast exfil the safest option.
- Use the radiation clock, but do not wait for panic. The Time Remaining HUD indicates when the radiation storm will intensify. Activision warns that operators should locate an exfil or risk an area becoming too hostile to survive. Waiting until the lobby is forced out can turn extraction into a fight over the remaining pads.
- Abandon the hull if it buys a safer route on foot. If anti-armor fire controls the pad, the tank may be more useful as a distraction or as cover while you break line of sight than as something to defend indefinitely.
- Remember what actually banks. A successful operator exfil is what banks DMZ Cash. The official FOB guide says DMZ XP still counts on a failed extract, but that is not a reason to risk valuable carried items for a vehicle that does not persist.
What is the safest solo plan, from first deployment to extraction?
Use a staged route: prepare in lower-threat areas, secure the parts across deployments, make one planned Iron Citadel repair visit, and leave with the operator once the tank has covered the extraction. The Air Base’s threat level is the reason to avoid treating the entire job as one continuous loot run.
- Prepare away from Chang-san. Gaming Route’s beginner advice names Deadtown, Imjin Farmland, Cheongun Village, Mirae General Hospital, and Songdo Wharf as lower-threat starting areas and advises beginners to avoid Chang-san, The Grid, the Citadel, and Haneul Nuclear Reactor. DMZMap places Deadtown south of the Air Base, making it a practical staging area for an approach or an earlier parts run.
- Collect the parts you can reach safely. Search for Battery, Plugs, and Water Pump during lower-risk visits; extract with them rather than pushing deeper simply to complete the set.
- Save the Alternator and repair for the Iron Citadel deployment. Bring the access card and code-note steps into the route plan. Expect the code to change each deployment.
- Enter the Armory only when you can complete the repair. Install all four pieces at the rear of the wreck, wait for the repair prompt, then drive out.
- Go directly to maintenance and a chosen exit. Use the Gas Station near Chang-san to restore fuel and armor, then choose the extraction point based on the route and threats—not merely on which pad is closest.
- Call only after scouting and positioning. Let the tank hold open ground during the wait, then leave it for the Monarch when the helicopter arrives.
Activision describes Chang-san as a sprawling North Korean air base built into a granite hillside, with an underground bunker larger than its surface footprint and a full guard force. Its published threat ratings are Air Base Exterior: Critical and Air Base Bunker: Extreme, and the official warning is to move with “extreme caution.” Field Report #3 in Activision’s Hajin blog also depicts an extraction collapsing amid Bale, drone swarms, and a Colossus. That narrative does not predict every match, but it reinforces the practical point: the Air Base and its extraction are not a low-risk solo circuit.

The tank gives a lone operator mobility, armor, and a powerful way to contest open ground, but it adds a repair route, fuel stops, noise, and a visible target to an already dangerous extraction. The safest version of the plan is therefore not “keep the tank alive at all costs”; it is “keep it useful until the operator can board.”
Collecting parts across multiple deployments takes longer, but avoids carrying every component into one Extreme-threat run. A one-run collection is faster only if the route goes well; it also concentrates all the risk in Chang-san. Likewise, holding the extraction in the tank can suppress AI and light vehicles, while abandoning it for a foot route can be the better choice when anti-armor operators already control the ridge. Treat the vehicle as a tool with a match-length lifespan, not as the objective that outranks your exfil.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I keep DMZ XP if I fail to extract?
Yes. Activision’s FOB guide says DMZ XP still counts after a failed exfil. That does not mean carried DMZ Cash is banked: a successful operator extraction is required for that.
How much does a vehicle infil cost in MW4 DMZ?
Gaming Route’s 2026 compilation of the official Deploy menu lists Ground as free, Polaris Dagor A1 at 5,000 DMZ Cash, LTV at 25,000, Helicopter at 50,000, and Cargo Plane at 100,000. These are deployment choices; they are not charges for calling an exfil helicopter.
How much can I store in the MW4 DMZ stash?
Activision figures reported by HowToVideoGame and Gaming Route say the starting stash has room for 40 items and 12 weapons. That is general stash capacity, separate from whether a backpack’s Secure Slot protects a carried tank part during a failed exfil.
