There is no single fix for every MW4 DMZ crash or failed extraction. First check Activision’s service-status page and run your platform’s network test; only then troubleshoot Wi‑Fi, router settings, or the game installation. A crash to desktop, a network disconnect during helicopter exfil, a server error, and loot that fails to credit are different failure classes with different next steps.
This guide separates those symptoms, gives the safest troubleshooting order for PC and consoles, and explains what is—and is not—known about recovering lost DMZ rewards.
What should I check first when MW4 DMZ crashes or disconnects?
Check for an outage before changing anything locally. Open Activision’s service-status page, select your platform, and look for a green status indicator. Activision says a non-green status or an active alert can cause connection problems. If the platform or game service is degraded, wait for restoration rather than changing NAT, forwarding ports, or reinstalling the game.
Activision’s connection guide was dated October 16, 2026, and the known-issues page was updated October 27, 2026. Those pages are more useful than generic lists of router “fixes” because they distinguish an acknowledged issue from a local fault. Check them again when the problem happens: service status and known-issue entries can change, and a report that was unresolved earlier may later be marked fixed.

Classify the failure before applying a fix
| What you see | Most relevant branch | What the step can establish |
|---|---|---|
| Game closes to desktop or freezes | PC/console crash and freeze support | Whether the failure resembles a software, driver, or hardware fault rather than a connection drop |
| Returned to the menu with a lost-host or server message | Network or service disconnect | Whether your local connection is unstable |
| Disconnected during the helicopter extraction | Network, service, or mode-specific bug | Whether the problem follows the connection or occurs only in DMZ |
| Run appears to finish but extraction is not credited | Progression or extraction-recording issue | Whether the incident matches a currently tracked issue |
Record the platform, game build, exact error text, UTC time, map and location, squad status, and whether other online games were affected. This information makes an official report more useful and helps separate a broad outage from a DMZ-only problem.
Also note what the game actually did: did it close, freeze in place, return you to the menu, or let you finish the run without recording the extraction? Those details matter. A game that exits to desktop belongs in a crash workflow; a menu return with a lost-host message calls for connection and service checks; an uncredited extraction should be compared with current progression issues. Do not treat “lost my run” as proof of a router failure.
How do I tell an outage from a problem on my own network?
An outage is more likely when the service-status page shows an alert, several online games or platform services fail at the same time, or the issue begins for many players simultaneously. A local network problem is more likely when the platform test reports an error, other devices are saturating the connection, or the game works reliably on Ethernet but not Wi‑Fi.
These are clues, not definitive diagnoses. A normal-looking status page does not prove your home network is at fault, and a successful network test does not rule out a later interruption or a mode-specific defect. The goal is to change one variable at a time and see whether the symptom changes, not to assume a cause based on one failed match.
Run the low-risk checks
- Check service status. Confirm the platform and Activision indicators before touching the router.
- Run the built-in platform connection test. Use the network-test option in your console or PC platform settings and note any NAT, latency, or sign-in message it reports.
- Restart the network. Close MW4, power-cycle the router according to its manufacturer’s normal procedure, wait for the internet connection to return, and then relaunch the game.
- Stop competing traffic. Pause downloads, 4K streaming, cloud backup, software updates, and other bandwidth-heavy activity while you reproduce the issue.
- Test Ethernet. Activision Support says, “We strongly recommend using a wired Ethernet connection during online gameplay.” A Cat 6 Ethernet cable is a practical diagnostic accessory. If DMZ becomes stable on Ethernet, Wi‑Fi instability is a plausible contributor; the result does not prove that every MW4 crash is network-related.
Activision also states that “a wired connection will allow your system to achieve optimal performance for online gameplay.” Treat that as a reliability recommendation, not a promise that a cable repairs a server-side bug or a game-code crash. A Cat 6 cable is an optional, relatively simple way to run this comparison if you have the equipment and can connect the console or PC to the router. No particular cable purchase is a guaranteed fix.
What the Ethernet comparison does—and does not—tell you
Try to compare sessions under similar conditions: same platform, similar time of day, and the same kind of DMZ activity. If the disconnect repeats on Wi‑Fi but not on Ethernet, a wireless contribution becomes more plausible. That is useful evidence to guide further troubleshooting, but it does not identify whether the cause is signal strength, interference, or another Wi‑Fi condition. If the failure occurs on both connections, do not keep buying cables or changing wireless settings as though the test proved the game itself is healthy.
Likewise, if other devices are downloading or streaming heavily, pausing that traffic is a controlled test rather than a permanent bandwidth requirement. If the issue persists with competing traffic stopped, record that result and continue to the branch that matches the symptom.

Why does MW4 DMZ crash to desktop or freeze?
A crash to desktop, a hard lock, or a graphics-driver-style failure is a different branch from a lost connection. Router resets and port forwarding cannot repair confirmed game-code, driver, operating-system, or hardware faults.
Use the crash-specific support route
- Close the game and write down whether it exited normally, froze the whole system, or displayed a graphics or driver error.
- Check Activision’s dedicated crashes-and-freezes support route for the current MW4 instructions for your platform.
- On PC, submit Activision’s PC crash report when the support flow requests it. Include the exact time, build, error text, map, and what happened immediately before the crash.
- Only after the crash branch is documented should you investigate local graphics settings, drivers, or operating-system issues using the instructions for your hardware and platform.
Do not present an Ethernet cable, router reset, registry utility, or NAT change as a cure for a reproducible driver or game-code failure. Those actions address connectivity symptoms, not the underlying crash. A PC crash report is a more relevant route than a generic connection complaint when the game closes or freezes; a console network test is more relevant when the game returns to a menu with a connection message.
What router settings should I change for MW4 DMZ?
For consoles, Activision documents a staged sequence: try UPnP first, then port forwarding with a static IP, and only afterward use a temporary console DMZ test. Change one method at a time so the result remains interpretable. The sequence is for diagnosing a console connection; it is not a general fix for PC crashes or service-side problems.
Stage 1: test UPnP
- Sign in to the router’s administration page.
- Turn off any manual MW4 port-forwarding rules.
- Enable UPnP and save the router configuration.
- Restart the console and router if the router requires it.
- Run DMZ long enough to see whether the original disconnect or failed exfil returns.
UPnP lets the console request the mappings it needs without maintaining a manual rule set. If this resolves the symptom, leave port forwarding disabled rather than stacking both methods. Keep a note of the original settings so you can restore them if the test does not help.

Stage 2: use port forwarding with a static console IP
- Turn off UPnP.
- Assign the console a static IP address or a DHCP reservation so its local address does not change.
- Enter the exact platform and game ports specified in Activision’s current connection instructions; do not copy a random port list from an unrelated game or an old guide.
- Save the router rules, restart networking, and test DMZ again.
A static address matters because forwarding rules point to one local device. If the console receives a different address later, the rules can silently target the wrong device. Use the port information for your own platform and current instructions; there is no reason in this guide to guess at a port list.
Stage 3: temporary DMZ diagnostic
- Turn off port forwarding.
- Keep the console’s static IP address.
- Place that console IP in the router’s DMZ host field.
- Run one or more controlled DMZ sessions and compare the original symptom.
- Remove the static IP from the router’s DMZ as soon as the test is complete.
Activision Support explicitly says, “Once you have tested DMZ, be sure to remove your Static IP address from your router’s DMZ.” DMZ is a diagnostic step, not a permanent security recommendation: it exposes the console more broadly to unsolicited traffic than ordinary routing. If you are unsure how to change or reverse a router setting, consult the router manufacturer’s instructions rather than leaving a temporary configuration in place.
How to interpret the router test
- UPnP works: the previous manual rules or address assignment may have been wrong. Keep the simpler working configuration.
- Port forwarding works but UPnP does not: verify the static address and remove duplicate or stale rules.
- Temporary DMZ works: a NAT or mapping conflict is plausible, but the test does not identify which port or service caused it. Remove DMZ and seek a narrower configuration.
- Nothing changes: stop escalating router exposure. Investigate service status, Wi‑Fi, platform software, crashes, or a DMZ-specific bug instead.
Think of the stages as a comparison, not a ladder you must climb regardless of results. The status check and wired test are low-risk; router changes should be reversible and limited to one method at a time. A temporary DMZ result can suggest a mapping issue, but it cannot prove that a particular port is responsible, and it cannot fix an outage or a game crash.

Why do I disconnect during helicopter exfil?
A disconnect at exfil can be caused by a service interruption, unstable Wi‑Fi, a platform network failure, or a mode-specific defect. The timing alone does not prove that your router caused it.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Use a controlled comparison
- Run the platform network test before launching another match.
- Stop downloads and streaming on the local network.
- Repeat on wired Ethernet where practical.
- Note whether the disconnect occurs only in DMZ, only at exfil, or in other online modes.
- Compare the UTC time and exact message with Activision’s service-status and known-issues pages.
If Ethernet removes the symptom, wireless interference, signal strength, channel congestion, or roaming remains a likely contributor. If the same exfil failure appears on Ethernet and across multiple sessions while other games work, a service or mode-specific issue deserves more weight.
When recording a repeat, capture the point in the extraction sequence and whether the whole game closed or only the session ended. Include the squad state and map/location in your notes. A repeatable failure at one point in a DMZ run is useful information for a report, but it still does not establish a universal cause. Avoid changing UPnP, port forwarding, and DMZ host settings all at once: if the next run succeeds or fails, you will not know which change mattered.
Can I recover loot after a failed DMZ extraction?
There is no established universal recovery process for loot lost after a crash or disconnect. DMZ is an extraction mode: players deploy, pursue rewards, and return to the Forward Operating Base after extraction. A failed extraction can therefore affect inventory or progression, but reconnecting, reinstalling, changing NAT, or placing a console in DMZ is not documented as a guaranteed restoration method.
What to do immediately
- Do not repeatedly change router settings while the service may be degraded.
- Capture the error message, UTC time, platform, map, squad state, and what items or progression were missing.
- Check the current known-issues page for a matching progression or extraction incident.
- Report the incident through Activision’s official support channel with the recorded details.
Keep expectations realistic: support may be able to associate your report with a tracked incident, but available evidence does not establish that individual lost loot can always be restored. A support report documents what happened; it is not a promise of item recovery. Reinstalling the game or changing the router after the fact should not be presented as a way to recreate server-side inventory or progression that was not recorded.
Which MW4 DMZ issues are officially tracked?
Activision’s current known-issues page lists specific MW4 problems and labels some as under investigation. One listed DMZ issue concerns progression through the Information Power Order. The page also gives a workaround for a separate operator-prestige issue involving rare weapons with three attachment slots.
Those entries are narrow. They are not evidence that every crash, disconnect, or failed extraction has the same cause. When reading any workaround, distinguish the evidence level:

A secondary report reviewed 129 posts from DMZ Codex in 2026. That is a limited sample of reports, not a crash rate or prevalence estimate for all MW4 players. Player reports can help you recognize a possible pattern, but they should not be confused with an official fix or proof that your own failure has the same cause.
What should I include in an MW4 crash or disconnect report?
Provide enough context for support to reproduce or match the event rather than writing only “DMZ crashed.” Include:

- Game build or update version shown by the platform.
- UTC date and time, map, location, and squad status.
- Exact error text, screenshot, or crash code.
- Whether the game closed, froze, returned to the menu, or failed to credit an extraction.
- Whether other online games and platform services worked at the same time.
- Whether the session used Wi‑Fi, Ethernet, UPnP, port forwarding, or a temporary DMZ test.
- What changed immediately before the incident, such as a router restart or game update.
On PC, use Activision’s crash-report path for a crash rather than filing it as a generic connection complaint. For a console disconnect, include the platform network-test result and the NAT state shown by the console. If you tried a router change, report the setting and the result, including whether you reversed it; this makes it easier to distinguish a useful diagnostic test from several simultaneous changes.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which fix should I try for my symptom?
| Symptom | Best first step | What to avoid assuming |
|---|---|---|
| Service alert or several online services affected | Wait for service restoration and check status again | That your router caused a wider outage |
| Menu return or lost-host message | Platform connection test, router restart, stop heavy traffic, compare Ethernet | That every disconnect needs port forwarding |
| PC crash or freeze | Crash-specific support route and PC crash report when appropriate | That NAT changes or an Ethernet cable fix a driver/game fault |
| Console-only connection symptom | Follow UPnP, then forwarding with static IP, then temporary DMZ test if needed | That a DMZ host should remain enabled permanently |
| Exfil completes but progression is missing | Check known issues, document and report the incident | That lost loot is always recoverable |
This comparison keeps the fix matched to the evidence and platform. Service checks and connection tests apply broadly; router configuration is a console-specific sequence in Activision’s guidance; crash reporting is the relevant path for desktop exits and freezes. No listed step guarantees a fix, but the order helps identify whether the fault is local, platform-wide, or tied to a tracked DMZ issue.
When should I stop changing settings?
Stop escalating local changes when service status is degraded, the game crashes to desktop, the same failure occurs on Ethernet, or a temporary DMZ test makes no difference. More router changes can increase exposure and make the original cause harder to isolate.
- Restore the last known-safe router configuration.
- Remove the console from the router DMZ after any diagnostic test.
- Keep a record of each change and its result.
- Use the official known-issues and support channels for a tracked or repeatable fault.
The practical order is service status, symptom classification, platform test, bandwidth cleanup, Ethernet comparison, console router stages, and finally crash-specific or official issue reporting. That sequence minimizes risk while preserving evidence about what actually changed. If a step does not affect the symptom, record the result and move to the correct branch rather than repeating increasingly broad router changes.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does reinstalling MW4 restore DMZ loot lost after a disconnect?
No recovery guarantee is documented for reinstalling the game. Reinstallation can replace damaged local files, but it does not recreate server-side inventory or progression that was not recorded.

Can changing NAT type stop every DMZ disconnect?
No. NAT changes can address a local mapping conflict, but they cannot repair an Activision outage, a Wi‑Fi radio problem, a platform fault, or a mode-specific bug. Test one router method at a time and keep the least exposed configuration that works.
Should I leave my console in the router DMZ permanently?
No. Activision describes DMZ as a test and instructs players to remove the console’s static IP from the router DMZ afterward. Leaving it there increases exposure without proving that the underlying issue is fixed.
Where do I report a repeatable PC MW4 crash?
Use Activision’s dedicated crashes-and-freezes support route and submit the PC crash report when prompted. Include the build, UTC time, error text, map, and whether the game closed or froze.

What should I check before changing router settings?
Check Activision and platform service status, then run your platform’s network test. If there is an active service alert, wait for restoration before changing UPnP, port forwarding, or DMZ settings.
Does a wired Ethernet connection guarantee MW4 DMZ will stop disconnecting?
No. Activision recommends wired Ethernet for online gameplay, and an Ethernet comparison can help identify a likely Wi‑Fi contribution. It cannot prove or repair a server-side or mode-specific issue.
What does it mean if temporary router DMZ testing helps?
It makes a local NAT or mapping conflict plausible, but does not identify a specific port or prove that DMZ is a safe permanent configuration. Remove the console from the router DMZ after testing and seek a narrower setup.
Are player-reported MW4 workarounds confirmed fixes?
Not necessarily. Separate officially fixed issues, issues under investigation, player reports, and untested workarounds. A player report is not evidence that the same cause applies to every crash or failed extraction.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
What details should I save after a failed exfil?
Record the platform, game build, exact error, UTC time, map and location, squad state, missing items or progression, and whether the game closed, froze, or returned you to the menu. Check the known-issues page and report the incident through Activision’s official channel.
The Bottom Line
Start with service status and the platform connection test, then match the next step to the symptom. Compare Ethernet for a possible Wi‑Fi issue, use Activision’s staged router guidance only for console connectivity, and send desktop crashes through the crash-report path. A failed extraction is not proof of router trouble, and no universal lost-loot recovery is established. If you test console DMZ, remove the console’s static IP from it afterward.
