In MW4 DMZ, your vest determines how many armor plates you can carry, but plates themselves are consumable supplies: you spawn with plates in your vest, then replenish them—and ammunition—at caches or with single-use boxes. Boss hunts split into paid-intel Lieutenants and always-present Commanders, and their defenses call for different tactics: bullets can hurt Colossus, but the Tank requires explosives. These mechanics apply to the Hajin Exclusion Zone in the DMZ mode that opened in Early Access on 20 October 2026 and launched with Modern Warfare 4 on 23 October.
What does armor do in MW4 DMZ?
Armor has two parts: a Plate Carrier that sets your plate capacity and a stack of Armor Plates that gets used up as you take damage. A vest is not a permanent health bar. It gives you a capacity and, depending on its type, may add a special protection effect.
At the FOB, the Armor slot is empty. Activision’s 9 October 2026 FOB guide says plates fill into that slot automatically when you infiltrate, up to the capacity of the vest you selected. Traits that expand Armor Slot capacity and an Armor Box Field Upgrade are the stated ways to bring in extra plates. Plates do not carry over from the menu as a persistent stack.

That distinction matters after a fight: a better vest gives you a larger or differently protected plate setup, but you still need plates to refill it. If your Operator dies, the vest you are wearing is lost. Secure Slots on a backpack protect stowed items, not equipped armor.

Which vest should I print, and how do I get a 3-Plate?
The 1-Plate and 2-Plate vests are the straightforward starting choices. A 3-Plate Vest is a level-37 progression reward and the practical capacity target for tougher areas, while later special carriers trade on effects such as armor regeneration, headshot protection, or enhanced plates. Recipe availability and some item-card details differ by source, so check the in-game printer before spending rare materials.
Starter carriers and progression
The 3D Printer unlocks at DMZ Level 2, along with six official starter recipes. Activision lists these carrier recipes and descriptions:

The level-37 3-Plate reward was withheld by a bug that Activision fixed in the 28 October 2026 patch. Community sources report the printer materials above and say the recipe can come from Orders and/or the level-37 reward; treat those materials as reported recipe details, not an official cost guarantee. The level-37 reward’s rarity conflict is also worth checking in-game: Activision’s progression track calls it Epic, while some community item cards say Legendary.
Special carriers and their trade-offs
Community printer lists describe several higher-tier options. Their special effects are useful distinctions, but the effect values are not fully published: there is no confirmed regeneration delay, headshot damage threshold, or numeric Tempered protection value.
- 2-Plate Ballistic Gel Vest (Epic): described as regenerating armor. Reported recipe: 50 Synthetics, 3 Binding Catalyst, and 10 Reactive Metals. The exact regeneration timing and recovery after a break are unverified.
- 2-Plate Helmet Armor Vest (Epic): two plates with headshot protection. The damage threshold is not published.
- 3-Plate Ballistic Gel Vest and 3-Plate Helmet Armor Vest (Ultra): three plates with the gel-regeneration or headshot-reduction effect, respectively; exact effect values are not stated.
- Tempered Armor Vest (Ultra): uses enhanced plates for extra tempered protection, according to the official printer description of special vests. A reported recipe is 2 Military Composites, 4 Ballistic Fabric, and 10 Rigid Synthetics. Military Composites have no printer recipe and drop from Colossus.
A reported route to a Tempered recipe card is the Lieutenant crate in The Doctor’s Command Office at Mirae General Hospital; The Doctor drops the office key. This is an observed route, not a guaranteed card drop. If the goal is simply more capacity, prioritize the level-37 3-Plate reward; if you are targeting Tempered, plan around the Colossus material drop and verify the printer recipe in your current build.

Prestige also consumes the equipped carrier. First Prestige requires a Rare plate carrier and related Rare gear; Second requires an Epic carrier; Third requires a Legendary carrier. The respective DMZ Cash costs are 200,000, 300,000, and 500,000, according to Activision’s 2026 progression details. Keep that requirement in mind before wearing your only valuable vest into Prestige.
Where can I refill ammo and plates?
Use Ammo & Armor Caches for free field resupply, and carry a box when you need a portable squad resupply or expect a long boss fight. Both sources are limited: caches go on cooldown, and each placed Field Upgrade box is single-use because DMZ Field Upgrades do not recharge.

The Ammo Box cost is reported by Destructoid; the Armor Box cost is reported by Destructoid, with DMZTracker placing its recipe unlock at DMZ Level 14. The Field Upgrades tab opens at Level 12. Confirm the recipe and unlock in your current printer, since community-listed costs can change. Survival Kits, including the Basic Armor Kit and Restock Kit, can also supply an Armor Kit.
Take plates from known loot spawns as soon as you land, then use caches when you can do so safely. If your local cache is cooling down, place a box before committing to a Lieutenant, Commander, UAV hack, or SAM Site capture. For a Tank fight in particular, bring an Ammo Box: launchers and other explosives can consume ammunition quickly. You can swap an Armor Box for an Ammo Box from your backpack when the fight demands it.
How do the Boss Board and boss types work?
The Boss Board unlocks after your second DMZ Order and divides targets into Lieutenants and Commanders. Lieutenants are deliberate hunts that can require paid intel; Commanders are already in Hajin, and their intel is free. The payoff differs too: Lieutenant cases drive Boss Board progression, while Commander kills and extracts provide 3D Printer ingredients.

How to start a Lieutenant hunt
- Complete the prerequisite challenges shown for the target before deployment.
- At the FOB, buy the target’s intel with DMZ Cash, or skip the purchase and use a Lieutenant Hunt Tower during the deployment.
- If using the tower, climb it and activate its Upload Station to mark the nearest Lieutenant. Paid intel is for one deployment.
- Approach prepared for the target’s distinct weapon and any loyal escort. Lieutenants hold territory and are not just isolated loot containers.
- After the kill, decide whether to take the Dog Tag Case. Extracting it advances the Boss Board even if you looted it from another player; leaving it behind still allows the XP and Cash rewards.

The locations and drops in this table are reported by launch guides and community sources; Activision’s official description establishes the identities, not a guaranteed fixed spawn or drop table. Deathstalker is the official one-word spelling. It is also useful to distinguish the named Commander drone from generic Deathstalker helicopters dispatched as reinforcements at high threat.

How do I kill Colossus, Deathstalker, and the Tank?
Match the weapon plan to the target rather than assuming every armored enemy ignores bullets. Conventional guns work against Colossus, SAM Sites are the preferred answer to Deathstalker, and bullets do no damage to the Tank: use explosives and bring ammunition to sustain them.
Colossus: flank and focus fire
Colossus is an infantry enemy, so conventional guns can damage him. Fight as a squad from more than one angle so the Minigun cannot concentrate on a single Operator; keep distance, use Stun Grenades, and aim for headshots. Drill Charges still work, but the 25 October 2026 patch reduced their damage to Colossus, so stacking charges is no longer a reliable instant-kill plan. A 2-Plate vest is a suggested minimum in launch guidance; a 3-Plate gives a stronger margin before farming Military Composites for Tempered gear.
Deathstalker: capture a SAM Site
Capture a SAM Site before engaging when possible. SAM Sites are the cleanest counter to the helicopter-sized Commander; launchers and bullet weapons can finish it, especially if another squad contests the site. The SAM Airburst Turret is separately listed as a craftable lethal at 30 Metals + 3 Detonators by Destructoid; that is a reported print cost, not a guarantee that crafting one replaces capturing a site.
Tank: explosives only
Bullet weapons do no damage to the Tank, according to GameRant’s launch advice. Bring launchers, Thermites, C4, or Drill Charges, and pack an Ammo Box so you can replenish during the fight. The Tank patrols roads and highways, so search its routes rather than expecting one fixed arena spawn.

Reported boss-useful lethal print costs from Destructoid are C4 or Thermite at 10 Chemicals + 10 Metals, and Drill Charge at 15 Chemicals + 15 Metals. Check the in-game printer before committing materials. No official figure is published for Tank or Commander health, plate hit points, rounds restored per Ammo Box, or a universal time-to-kill; a precise shot count would be speculation.
Where are the Lieutenants, and what does a Dog Tag Case do?
Launch guides list ten named Lieutenants, including the roaming Scavenger. Use the list as a starting point rather than a spawn guarantee: the Scavenger appears near dead Operators, Hunt Towers can help locate the nearest Lieutenant, and available routes may vary by deployment.

The list reflects GameRant’s 21 October and Insider Gaming’s 22 October 2026 launch guides. Earlier datamined lists disagreed about the total, and Activision had not published an official complete roster. Infinity Ward has said Lieutenants include operators from earlier Call of Duty games hired by the Hundred Spirits faction; Roze and Bale were named examples.
The Dog Tag Case is a high-risk objective, not ordinary pocket loot. Picking it up broadcasts your position to every Operator, alerting rival squads; Activision’s official instruction is to exfil immediately. If you do not want that PvP pressure, leave the case and take the XP and Cash. A case taken from another player still counts toward Boss Board progress when you extract.
Why do armor and ammo matter before entering a high-threat area?
Fighting AI raises a point-of-interest Threat Level, which can call heavier reinforcements and eventually Deathstalkers. That threat system tracks combat with AI, not human Operators. Separately, filling the Hostiles Kill Count meter sends a Hunt Squad and marks you for death, so extended engagements can create additional danger even when you are not hunting a boss.

Hajin’s AI ranges from Tier 1 grunts to Tier 4 heavily armored soldiers, alongside drone swarms, LMG drones, K9 quadrupeds that are usually underground, helicopter patrols, Lieutenants, and Commanders. A suppressed weapon, melee, and throwing knives can reduce the noise and escalation associated with fighting through an area. For solo Operators, the Stealth Meter gives an early warning: the indicator and audio cue progress from white to yellow to orange as an AI adversary gets close to spotting you. Break sight, get into cover, or hit the deck before the hostile becomes alerted.
Extreme zones are not just harder versions of ordinary loot areas. Activision’s June 2026 Hajin briefing describes heavy fallout in the east and says a Gas Mask is needed to access its loot. The 23 October update stopped Gas Masks, including Durable Gas Masks, from breaking immediately on radiation contact. For The Chemist’s Hanuel Nuclear Reactor hunt, include a mask in the survival plan as well as enough ammunition and plates; radiation preparation and combat preparation solve different problems.
What changed recently, and what is coming to DMZ?
Several launch-week changes directly affect these systems. On 23 October 2026, Gas Masks stopped breaking on first radiation contact, and disposable parachutes were set to three uses. On 25 October, Drill Charges were weakened against Colossus. On 28 October, Activision fixed the level-37 3-Plate reward payout, so eligible Operators who were missing it should check their progression reward.
Season 1 is scheduled for 00:00 ET on 6 November 2026, after the current information date. LoadoutVault reports that it is due to add the X01 black site, Lieutenants Tae-Hyun (“Knuckle”) and Chol-Min (“The Wrench”), and Commanders The Captain (Juggernaut) and a patrolling Wheelson. Those are announced additions, not live content as of 30 October; boss locations and item recipes can change with later updates.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Lieutenant intel stay active if I die or leave the deployment?
The launch guide describes purchased intel as lasting for one deployment; it does not establish that it persists into another deployment. Treat it as a per-run purchase rather than a permanent Boss Board unlock.
How many players are in a MW4 DMZ match?
Some launch coverage reports up to 60 players in 20 squads of three, but Activision has not published a fixed player count. Consider that figure unconfirmed rather than a guaranteed lobby size.
What unlocks after the 3D Printer in DMZ progression?
The Vendor unlocks at DMZ Level 5, the Gunsmith at Level 10, and the Dog Tag Case station at Level 20. Extracting a Recipe or Weapon Manual pays 5,000 DMZ Cash and permanently unlocks it, according to Activision’s 2026 progression details.
