The safest Air Base Armory run in MW4 DMZ is a controlled Operation Iron Citadel deployment, not a push through the main gate. Spawn in the North Korean Wilderness, approach Chang-san Air Base from the south, slip through the crouch-height wall gap, and stay quiet until you have the Air Base Access Card – Multi Use. Upgrade that card in Admin Complex No. 2, collect all three Transfer Slip notes for that match’s randomized six-digit code, then open the bunker and fight Commander Colossus from cover. Loot the Armory, reverse your route, and call a Monarch exfil away from the air strip. This plan minimizes exposure; it does not make the bunker safe. The exterior is officially Critical and the bunker is Extreme.

From the Iron Citadel spawn, follow the perimeter to the right, pass through the broken wall, hop the fence and search the three low buildings. MrDalekJD’s six recorded runs found a Small Secure Backpack, a launcher Weapon Manual, a Drill Charge recipe, a 2-Plate Armor Vest recipe, a Painkiller recipe and a Large Scavenger Backpack recipe. Those are six runs, not a published drop rate. One route summary banked 5,000 DMZ Cash with 20,200 in backpack and loadout value and took about five minutes.

2. Armory loot-and-leave: best balance
This is the safest way to reach the vault itself. You still face the Critical exterior, the alarm caused by the card upgrade, an Extreme bunker and Colossus, but you avoid the exposed aircraft and SAM-site objectives. Leave through the bunker route as soon as your priority items are secured.
3. Full Iron Citadel: highest commitment
Carry the Armory Manifest, plant explosives on marked crates and three strike aircraft, and complete any SAM objective that remains on your tracker. The mission promises a Supreme Leader’s Bunker Access Card, an LTV paid infil and 25,000 DMZ Cash. A COD Central run recorded 12,500 XP even after an MIA finish, but the operator’s gear was lost.
How we picked
The ranking weighs exposure, required combat, time in the Extreme bunker, number of objectives and the consequences of a failed extraction. It does not assume an official drop rate for Gun Lockers or recipes, because Activision has not published one.
What do I need before deploying?
Select Operation Iron Citadel in Story Missions. It unlocks after Operation Critical Extraction, Operation Silent Ledger and Operation Shopping Hacks. The mission’s spawn, objective markers and lower likelihood of unrelated operators at that approach are why it is safer than Free Roam for this run.
- Use a 3-Plate Armor Vest, Medkit, Ammo Box, Armor Boxes and a Self-Revive if available.
- Carry a primary weapon with a large magazine for Colossus.
- Bring a Medium Backpack or better so you have a Secure Slot and enough free space to pick up the Multi Use card. Exact Secure Slot counts by backpack have not been published; community guidance places the first useful tier at Medium.
- Put an Air Base DRC Weapons Locker Key in your loadout only if you already own one and intend to search the separate Ultra locker.
- Use melee, throwing knives or suppressed shots for early guards. Activision’s official Hajin guidance says stealth kills help prevent higher-threat areas from noticing you.
Keys in the stash do nothing until they are equipped. Most disappear after use, while the Multi Use card is the named exception. Selling a key for about 100 DMZ Cash is usually worse than opening its room.
Where is the Chang-san Air Base Armory?
The Armory is underground in the Chang-san Air Base Bunker in western Hajin, around Tac-Map grids B5–B6. The surface base has cliffs to the east, woodland to the south, watchtowers, a hospital, helipad, runway, barracks and depots. The granite hillside conceals a bunker larger than the surface footprint. The official threat labels are Air Base Exterior Critical and Air Base Bunker Extreme.

Call of Duty Staff describes the area as a North Korean air base run by Lieutenant Bale and warns that “Finding a gap in the concrete perimeter wall while remaining hidden from watchtower guards requires exceptional skill and good judgment.”
How do I enter the base without triggering a fight?
- Approach from the southern woodland. Use elevated cover to watch the perimeter and identify the crouch-height opening in the concrete wall. Do not use the main gate.
- Stay below the watchtowers’ sight lines. Move crouched between buildings and eliminate only guards that block your route.
- Clear the nearest watchtower. Its elevated guard can see the search buildings and turn a quiet entry into a Critical-to-Extreme escalation.
- Keep the route back in mind. You will use the same wall gap or bunker-side path after looting; do not cross the runway unnecessarily.
In MrDalekJD’s related surface route, the three low buildings beyond the broken wall were unguarded in the footage. Treat that as a route observation, not a guarantee for every deployment.
How do I find the Air Base Access Card – Multi Use?
Iron Citadel marks four search buildings on the Tac-Map. Enter a marked building and let its scan meter complete. The interface reports either SCAN RESULT: NO KEYCARD FOUND or SCAN RESULT: KEYCARD FOUND. Spawns reported by launch guides include office desks, warehouses, washrooms and a small safe on a metal cabinet; one COD Central run found the card on an office desk.
- Leave a free backpack slot before starting the search.
- Do not confuse this Epic Multi Use card with the Legendary Single Use Armory card or the Ultra DRC locker key.
- The Multi Use card opens several locked doors around the base, including Admin Complex No. 2, but it is also the item consumed by the upgrade terminal.
How do I upgrade the card, and why does the alarm matter?
- Go to the large Admin Complex No. 2 building on the south side of the base.
- Use the Multi Use card at the back entrance and climb to the Server Room. Two heavy guards are inside.
- Hold the upgrade terminal until its progress bar finishes.
- Manually select TAKE ARMORY ACCESS CARD. Leaving without taking it wastes the upgrade.
The result is the Legendary Airbase Armory Keycard – Single Use. Its description says it works once, and it is a mission card rather than a repeatable stash key. The upgrade also raises the alarm: soldiers go on high alert and the bunker becomes Extreme. Reload, plate up and let squadmates cover the Server Room doors before moving on.
Community guides describe two equivalent entries into the bunker: a downstairs left-hand door when facing the stairs, or the Entrance Garage on the south hillside. Follow the marker shown in your deployment; both routes lead to the same bunker complex.

The vault requires both the Single Use card and a randomized six-digit code. Three notes each provide two digits. The code changes every match, so a video code such as 294324 is not reusable. COD Central recorded 294324 on one run and a different number on another.

- Search the first bunker wing for the note labeled as the first Transfer Slip.
- Search the second wing for the second note.
- Search the final wing for the third note.
- Confirm that the HUD reads Known Digits 3/3 before approaching the keypad.
- Arrange the pairs by the note labels, not by the order in which you picked them up.
- Enter the six digits, then swipe the Single Use card on the reader to the right of the door.
Guide names differ for the same three areas. One set calls them the Recovery Room reception, Administrative Wing dining room and Security Wing lower level. Another calls them the Administration Conference Room, Medical Wing Laboratory and Control Room. Sweep all three wings and trust the Transfer Slip labels and the HUD. Claims that this is a three-digit code conflict with the detailed launch walkthroughs and should be treated as an error.
The notes are labeled TRANSFER SLIP – DO NOT FILE. Do not use a campaign bunker code or a code from another DMZ map.
How do I beat Colossus in the Armory?
Colossus is a minigun Commander who may be behind the vault door, on the approach or in the wilderness. His bounty is listed as $50,000 on the FOB Boss Board. Explosives and grenades are reported to do no damage; use gunfire and cover.

Doorway method
After opening the vault, stay to the left of the doorway, go prone and fire at the shoulder. The door frame limits his line of sight. If he repositions or rounds the frame, retreat, re-plate and change the angle rather than insisting on the peek.
Staircase method
Use the metal staircase above the toxic green gas. Colossus fires in bursts; shoot only during the pauses and keep the staircase between you and the gas cloud. This method avoids entering the Armory floor and gives a squad a second angle.
Activision describes Commanders as resistant to many standard weapons and says they require tactical knowledge. The two methods above are community techniques, not guaranteed exploits; a balance update could change the doorway behavior.

What should I loot first?
- Armory Manifest. Take it if you intend to complete Iron Citadel; leaving it behind can stall the mission.
- Weapon Manuals and 3D Printer recipes. These permanent unlocks apply only after a successful exfil and pay 5,000 DMZ Cash each on extract.
- Gun Lockers. Community clears report six or more, including examples of a launcher Weapon Manual and a gold PPSh. No official locker or recipe drop table has been published.
- Caches and ordnance crates. Refill plates, ammunition and revives before the trip out.
- DRC Weapons Locker. This separate Ultra-key locker moves around the room each deployment. The Armory card does not open it.
A sealed chamber containing a tank has been reported farther inside. As of October 28, 2026, players had not identified the parts needed to start it. Do not spend time searching for a nonexistent published solution during a loot run.
Move the Manifest, manuals, recipes and spare keys into Secure Slots before leaving the vault. Items outside those slots are lost if the Operator becomes MIA.

Loot-and-leave exit
Reverse through the bunker stairs or the left-hand Admin Complex route, then take the wall-side path back toward your vehicle. Skip the jets and the SAM site when your goal is loot. The SAM hold is open ground with Extreme AI and a strong chance of third-party fire; COD Central recorded a solo death there.
Mission-complete exit
If you need the Supreme Leader’s Bunker Access Card and Iron Citadel rewards, follow the tracker: plant explosives on the marked Armory crates, destroy one strike aircraft in the hangar and two outside, complete the SAM objective if it remains mandatory, then extract with the Manifest. Mission scripting varied between launch runs; in one later run the SAM was only a 150 XP side operation after the tracker had already moved to exfil.
Choosing the extraction point
- Green smoke marks the available exfil pool. Call the Monarch, a twin-rotor helicopter that lands under AI control.
- Use a vehicle to reach an edge-of-map warehouse exfil and stay mobile while the helicopter arrives.
- Board prone and aim out of the rear if the landing zone is contested.
- An Exfil Flare is loud and visible. A Fulton Drop Marker can send high-value items to the FOB Stash instead of carrying them to the helicopter.
- Watch Time Remaining. The radiation storm intensifies from a random point and can close sites.
- Avoid the air-strip exfil. A launch-week player warning called it a poor trade for the bot pressure there; this is community advice, not an official rule.
Expedited Extraction shortens the bird’s arrival, Die Hard lets you call exfil from Last Stand, and Final Intel marks the final exfil from the start. Activision also warns that a Lieutenant Dog Tag Case broadcasts your position, so leave immediately after taking one.

Activision’s official description is blunt: “When the mission is complete, this is your ticket home and is not controlled by a player.” Treat extraction as part of the operation, not an afterthought.

What happens if the run fails?
Death sends the Operator MIA. Everything in the backpack and loadout is lost except Secure Slot items; found cash is not banked, and Manuals and Recipes do not unlock. Stash contents, DMZ XP and DMZ level remain. Rescue at the Operators station costs more as Dog Tag and Trait values rise, and a rescued Operator returns without gear.
Final-exfil attempts can run beyond 40 minutes, while an early exfil can finish a run in about 15. If you already have the card, code, Manifest and recipes, leaving early is usually the safer decision than chasing an optional SAM fight.
Which Chang-san keys are easy to confuse?

The Weapons Mod Workshop and Field Depot – B5 are location labels, not substitutes for the Armory card. Deploying in Free Roam without Iron Citadel does not have a confirmed Armory-opening method.
What should a solo player change?
Solo operators should treat the Surface farm as the default fallback. If you continue to the vault, carry the largest magazine available, keep a Self-Revive and spare plates, and clear the Server Room before starting the upgrade. Do not begin the keypad sequence while a squadmate—or, solo, your retreat path—is exposed to the hallway. A squad can split the Server Room watch and Colossus angles, which is why Iron Citadel is substantially more forgiving with teammates.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the Air Base Armory code stay the same between matches?
No. The keypad code is generated per match from three Transfer Slip notes, with two digits on each note. A code shown in a video is useful only as an example of format, not as a reusable combination.
Can I open the Armory in Free Roam with a Door Breacher Charge?
That interaction has not been confirmed. The reliable launch-week sequence is an Operation Iron Citadel deployment in which the Multi Use card is upgraded into the Single Use card.
Do recipes unlock if I leave the match MIA?
No. Manuals and recipes become permanent unlocks only after a successful extraction. Secure Slot storage protects the item from a death, but it does not trigger the unlock until you exfil.

Is the SAM site mandatory in every Iron Citadel run?
Mission scripting varied during launch week. If the objective tracker has already advanced to extraction, the SAM can be an optional 150 XP operation; follow the tracker rather than taking an unnecessary open-ground fight.
