Mundane is an open-source AI field investigator designed to turn an ordinary outdoor observation into a small, structured scientific inquiry. Instead of answering a nature question from a knowledge base and ending the interaction, its described workflow asks what you can see, guides safe checks in the physical setting, separates observations from inferences, and records uncertainty for later review. Slevin Cordeiro introduced the project in a DEV Community article published October 11, 2026. The article’s implementation, safety, performance and licensing details are author-reported descriptions rather than an independent audit or benchmark.

That distinction matters: Mundane is best understood as an observation aid. It can help you investigate why broadleaf plantain grows in one sidewalk seam but not a nearby parallel seam, yet it is not presented as a substitute for microscopy, laboratory testing, expert identification or long-term ecological monitoring.

What is Mundane, and why is it different from an AI encyclopedia?

Mundane is framed as an “open-source AI field investigator that turns everyday outdoor observations into small, structured scientific inquiries.” The project starts with something you notice outside, not with a request for a finished explanation. The software then helps turn that observation into a question, a list of clues to inspect, a safe procedure, and a record of what remains uncertain.

The design responds to a common weakness in conversational AI: a fluent answer can obscure which facts were actually observed, which conclusions were inferred, and which possibilities were never tested. Mundane’s stated method keeps those categories visible. Its aim is not to make every mystery disappear in one response, but to improve the quality of the next observation.

Cordeiro describes the motivation in the phrase, “I wanted to build the opposite.” In context, that means building a tool that sends attention back outdoors instead of keeping the entire investigation inside a chat window.

How does a Mundane investigation work from start to finish?

The article describes a loop that moves from noticing, to checking, to recording, rather than from asking directly to receiving a definitive answer.

1. Start with an ordinary difference

You enter a phenomenon you can inspect in person. The example in the article is broadleaf plantain growing in one sidewalk seam but not a nearby parallel seam. A useful starting observation includes the location, the visible contrast and any immediate context, such as shade, moisture, foot traffic or surface condition. Mundane’s role is to help turn that contrast into an inquiry that can be checked rather than merely explained.

2. Let the system formulate the inquiry

The described application proposes a focused question and identifies things worth looking for. Instead of treating “Why is this plant here?” as a request for a single cause, it can frame possible factors that you can compare at the two seams. The article does not claim that every generated question will be correct; the value is in making the investigation explicit enough to test.

3. Follow a safe field procedure

Mundane supplies a procedure intended for the place where the observation occurred. The procedure is designed around visible, non-destructive checks. In practice, that means looking closely, comparing nearby conditions and recording clues rather than collecting unknown organisms or manipulating the site in risky ways.

4. Record clues after looking away from the screen

Once you have inspected the setting, you enter what you found. The article presents this as a deliberate break from continuous phone use: the app gives you prompts, then asks you to put the device away and examine the physical scene.

5. Review evidence, deductions and alternatives

After clues are recorded, the system sorts them into directly observable evidence, reasonable deductions, alternative explanations, questions that need laboratory or longer-term investigation, and safe next field checks. This organization makes it harder to mistake a plausible story for a demonstrated fact.

6. Archive the inquiry

Completed inquiries are described as entries in a naturalist journal. Each entry can include uncertainty ratings, reflections and a Markdown export, creating a record that can be revisited when conditions change or additional evidence becomes available.

What is Continue Outdoors mode?

“Continue Outdoors” is the interface state intended for field use. Cordeiro describes it as a high-contrast view designed for sunlight, with prompts that tell you to put the phone away and inspect the setting around you.

This is a behavioral feature as much as a visual one. A normal chat interface encourages scrolling and immediate follow-up questions; Continue Outdoors is described as a handoff from the screen to the site. The app can therefore be used to plan a check, pause while you observe, and return only when you have clues to enter.

How does Mundane distinguish evidence from a hypothesis?

The central reasoning feature is a structured separation between what was seen and what it might mean. The article says Mundane sorts a completed observation into five useful categories:

  • Directly observable evidence: details you could point to in the scene or record without an explanatory leap.
  • Reasonable deductions: conclusions that follow from the recorded clues but are still interpretations.
  • Alternative explanations: competing causes that could account for the same pattern.
  • Questions requiring laboratory or longer-term investigation: issues that cannot be resolved safely or reliably during one visit.
  • Safe next field checks: additional observations that can reduce uncertainty without risky handling or disturbance.

Mundane also presents a hypothesis matrix. It compares a proposed explanation with alternatives and labels each one as supported, plausible but unverified, inconclusive or contradicted. Those labels describe the current state of the evidence, not a probability score or a scientific certification.

For the sidewalk-plantain example, a difference in moisture might support one explanation, while identical shade and soil conditions could weaken it. A matrix can keep several possibilities alive until a later check distinguishes them. It cannot, by itself, establish a microbial cause, species identification or causal relationship that requires instruments or controlled observation.

What safety protections does the project describe?

The article says Mundane includes a safety validator that intercepts suggestions to taste wild plants, handle unknown fungi, disturb wildlife or trespass. The intended result is to redirect the user toward safer observation.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

These are author-reported design claims, not the result of an independent safety audit. A validator can miss context, misunderstand a species or fail to recognize a hazardous location. Do not taste or handle an unknown organism, enter restricted land, disturb animals or ignore local rules simply because an AI-generated procedure appears in the interface. If a field question involves poisoning, disease, protected species, unstable terrain or private property, stop and use qualified local guidance.

The safest use of the tool is observational: compare visible conditions, take notes or photographs where permitted, and leave the site as you found it. A pocket field notebook can be a useful general companion when you need to record observations without holding a phone, but the article does not require or recommend a particular notebook.

Does Mundane work offline, or does it send observations to the cloud?

The described architecture supports both local and optional remote paths, so the privacy and connectivity experience depends on how a deployment is configured. The article does not establish that every installation is fully offline or that every cloud route has identical data-protection properties.

Path What the article describes What to verify before use
Local inference Ollama can run models on the user’s machine. Gemma 2 2B is named for local text reasoning, and a Gemma multimodal 12B model is named for image analysis. Whether your computer can load the selected model, how images are handled locally, and whether the deployment makes any network requests.
Optional remote inference A configurable provider interface can use an OpenAI-compatible route for remote inference. Which provider receives prompts or images, retention and privacy terms, account requirements, and whether the route is enabled by default.
Local storage Browser local storage is described as the default place for inquiry data. How clearing browser data, changing browsers or using private browsing affects your journal.
Optional synchronization Supabase synchronization is described as an option protected by row-level-security migrations. Which project owns the database, how authentication is configured, what is synchronized and how deletion works.

Before entering sensitive locations, identifiable people, private property details or unpublished research notes, inspect the actual deployment’s configuration and privacy policy. “Local storage” and “optional cloud sync” describe available design paths; they are not a guarantee about every hosted instance.

What models and response times does the article report?

The project description names different models for different workloads. Gemma 2 2B is used for local text reasoning, while a Gemma multimodal 12B model is named for image analysis. The larger model can offer richer visual processing at a substantial compute cost, while the smaller text model is intended to make interactive reasoning more practical on a local machine.

Cordeiro reports the following timings from a local CPU run on the author’s setup:

Configuration Reported result How to interpret it
12B model generation 90–180 seconds per generation An author-reported experience, not a benchmark or expected result on other hardware.
Gemma 2 2B text reasoning About 12–18 seconds per response An author-reported experience after changing text reasoning to the smaller model; actual latency will vary.

The times are useful for setting expectations about local experimentation, but they do not establish throughput, quality, battery use or performance on a phone, laptop or hosted server. Image analysis and text reasoning may also have different resource requirements.

What technology stack does Mundane use?

The article describes a Next.js 15 client written in TypeScript with Tailwind CSS. API route handlers connect the interface to Mastra coordination and a configurable provider interface. Ollama is named for local inference, while an OpenAI-compatible route is available for optional remote inference.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The storage layer is described as browser local storage by default, with optional Supabase synchronization protected by row-level-security migrations. These details suggest a web application that can keep a lightweight local journal while allowing a deployment to add a hosted data path, but the article does not independently verify the repository or every configuration.

During development, the author reports that 27 automated tests passed. That figure is a project-development result, not an independently reproduced test suite, a coverage percentage or proof that field safety and model outputs are reliable.

How are inquiries saved and exported?

When an inquiry is completed, the article says it is archived as a naturalist journal entry. The entry can preserve uncertainty ratings and the user’s reflections instead of storing only the final AI text. Markdown export provides a portable, human-readable representation that can be moved into another notes system or retained as a plain file.

If you rely on the browser-local default, protect the journal as you would any other local browser data. Clearing site data, switching profiles or losing the device may affect access. If synchronization is enabled, understand what account and database receive the records before treating the cloud copy as a backup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is Mundane truly open source, and what does its license cover?

The article states that the application code is released under Apache 2.0. It separately describes the Gemma model weights as distributed under the Gemma Terms of Use. Those are different licensing claims: an Apache-licensed application does not automatically make the model weights Apache-licensed or equivalent to an OSI-approved open-source software license.

Anyone redistributing, modifying or deploying the project should read both the application license and the applicable model terms for the exact version and use case. The article does not provide a legal opinion, and model terms can impose obligations that are separate from the code license.

What can Mundane establish, and where does it stop?

Mundane is useful when the answer depends on careful local observation and a clear record of uncertainty. It is not a replacement for methods that require equipment, controlled sampling or repeated measurements.

  • Needs more than the app: microscopy, chemical or biological assays, definitive species identification, medical or toxicology advice, and claims that depend on seasonal or multi-month observations.
  • Uncertain by design: an “inconclusive” or “plausible but unverified” label is an intended outcome when the available clues cannot decide among explanations.
  • Context dependent: image and text quality, response time, privacy and offline behavior depend on the deployment, model, hardware and provider configuration.

The most responsible interpretation is that Mundane improves the investigation process. It does not turn a generated hypothesis into a verified fact merely because the wording sounds confident.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Who is Mundane for, and how should a first session be approached?

The project is suited to curious naturalists, students, developers exploring local AI and anyone who wants a disciplined way to examine everyday outdoor patterns. It is less suitable as the sole authority for safety-critical decisions or professional ecological assessments.

  1. Choose a harmless, accessible observation on land where you are permitted to be.
  2. Describe the visible contrast without adding a cause you have not observed.
  3. Read the proposed inquiry and identify which clues can actually be checked during that visit.
  4. Use Continue Outdoors, put the phone away and inspect the scene.
  5. Record only what you can support, separating observations from interpretations.
  6. Review the alternatives and the hypothesis labels instead of selecting the most confident-sounding explanation.
  7. Archive the entry, note what remains unknown and export it if you need a durable copy.

This routine preserves the project’s central idea: AI should help structure attention and uncertainty, while the physical world supplies the evidence.

What should you check before adopting a deployment?

Because the public description covers an architecture rather than an independent product audit, evaluate the specific instance you plan to run.

  • Confirm which models are installed and whether image prompts stay local.
  • Inspect provider and synchronization settings before entering sensitive observations.
  • Test what happens when the browser is offline, local storage is cleared or a request fails.
  • Verify that safety warnings appear for the kinds of activity you might propose, but do not treat them as a substitute for judgment.
  • Measure response times on your own hardware; the author’s 12–18-second and 90–180-second figures are not guarantees.
  • Read the Apache 2.0 application license and Gemma Terms of Use separately if you plan to redistribute or operate the software.

Mundane’s strongest contribution is methodological: it makes an outdoor question smaller, records the difference between evidence and inference, and leaves room for an honest “we do not know yet.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Mundane replace a field guide or naturalist expert?

No. It can organize observations and suggest safe checks, but the described system does not provide authoritative species identification or expert validation. Use a qualified local expert when a wrong identification could affect health, conservation or legal compliance.

Can I use Mundane on a phone?

The article describes a web-oriented Next.js client but does not establish a supported phone model, native app or mobile performance target. Whether a phone can run the interface or local models depends on the particular deployment and hardware.

What does the report of 27 passing tests tell me?

It shows that the author reported automated tests passing during development. It does not state the test coverage, scenarios, model quality or safety assurance, so it should not be read as an independent reliability certification.

What should I do when an inquiry remains inconclusive?

Keep the uncertainty label, record which observation would distinguish the remaining explanations, and return under comparable conditions if that is safe and permitted. If the missing evidence requires laboratory work or prolonged monitoring, treat the app’s open question as a boundary rather than improvising a risky test.
