Multimodal embeddings are numerical vectors that represent content from more than one media type in a shared semantic space. Depending on the model, text, images, video, audio, or document pages can be converted into vectors that software compares for similarity. That enables a text query to find an image or video moment, a reference image to locate visually similar products, or a retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) system to fetch relevant pages containing both words and pictures. The vectors do not replace a reasoning model: they are a retrieval and ranking component, and their supported formats, limits, segmentation, and quality depend on the specific provider and model.
What are multimodal embeddings?
An embedding is a numerical representation of content, usually an array of floating-point values. A multimodal embedding model maps content from multiple modalities into a space where related meaning produces nearby vectors. The word “multimodal” describes the model’s capabilities, not a universal feature set: one model may accept text and images, another may add video and audio, and a third may handle document pages.
Once content is embedded, an application stores the vectors and compares a query vector with them using a similarity function. A text description such as “red hiking backpack beside a tent” can therefore retrieve images whose visual content matches the concept, even when those words never appear in a filename or caption. A reference product photo can retrieve visually similar catalog items, while a video archive can return moments associated with a natural-language description.

Why do multimodal embeddings matter for AI applications?
They let applications search and organize media by meaning rather than by literal text labels. That is valuable whenever the useful evidence is visual, spoken, or spread across different file types.
- Cross-modal search: users can enter text to find images or video, or submit an image to find similar media.
- Better asset discovery: digital-asset teams can locate scenes, objects, or visual styles in large collections without manually tagging every file.
- Product matching: retailers can combine textual attributes and visual appearance for catalog discovery and similarity search.
- Multimodal RAG: a retrieval workflow can select relevant pages, images, or other media before a generation model prepares an answer.
- Recommendations, clustering, and classification: vectors provide a common representation for grouping related items or ranking likely matches.
These benefits are not automatic. Search quality depends on the model, the way content is prepared and segmented, the vector index, and the ranking and filtering logic applied after retrieval.
How does cross-modal retrieval work?
A typical system has four stages: create vectors for the content collection, create a vector for each user query, compare the query with stored vectors, and pass the best candidates to the application’s next step.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Prepare the corpus. Normalize files and decide whether each item should be embedded as a whole or split into pages, frames, clips, or other segments.
- Generate content embeddings. Send each supported text, image, video, audio, or document input to the chosen model. The resulting vector must be stored with an identifier and useful metadata.
- Embed the query in the correct role. A text search request, an image query, and a document being indexed may require different instructions. Google’s Gemini Embedding 2 guidance, for example, distinguishes asymmetric retrieval query text from document text; do not assume another provider uses the same prompt convention.
- Retrieve and rank. Compute similarity between the query vector and candidate vectors, then apply metadata filters, business rules, or a reranker when exact dates, identifiers, categories, or permissions matter.
- Use the results. Display matching media, feed selected passages or images into a RAG prompt, or use the ranked set for recommendations and classification.
The same architecture supports image-to-image similarity, text-to-image search, text-to-video retrieval, and mixed text-and-image queries, but only when the model documents those input combinations.
How can I search images with text?
Embed the image collection once, embed each natural-language query, and rank images by vector similarity. The model must have been trained and documented for a shared text-image space; a text-only embedding model cannot provide this cross-modal behavior.
Example workflow
- Store each image with an item ID and metadata such as product category, brand, date, or inventory status.
- Create an image vector for every supported file and index it in a vector-search system.
- When a user submits “black waterproof trail jacket,” create a text query vector using the model’s retrieval-query instruction.
- Search the image vectors, filter out unavailable products, and optionally rerank the top candidates using exact category or price rules.
- Show the ranked images and retain the query-result pairs as an evaluation set for future tuning.
Visual similarity is not the same as exact product identity. Two jackets can look alike while differing in size, material, or stock status, so structured catalog fields should remain authoritative for those constraints.

How can I find video clips using a text query?
Video search usually requires converting a video into one or more representations, such as sampled frames or segments, then comparing a text query with those representations. The model’s sampling and audio behavior determine what the search can actually find.
Recommended Free Tools
Google’s Gemini API documentation says its video representation uses at most 32 frames and that audio tracks in video are not processed in that workflow. A query about visible action or appearance may work, but a query that depends on spoken dialogue will not be represented by that video embedding alone. For speech-driven search, use a workflow that transcribes audio or explicitly supports audio embeddings.
Long media often needs segmentation. A single vector for an entire film may blur together unrelated scenes, while vectors for short clips or sampled frames can return a more precise moment at the cost of more storage and indexing work. Keep timestamps with every segment so a result can open the source at the relevant location.
Which modalities and input limits should I check?
Read the model’s current documentation before designing an ingestion pipeline. The following values come from the provider documentation described here and are not universal limits.
| Approach | Documented modalities or behavior | Limits and processing details | Best-aligned uses |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gemini Embedding 2 API | Text, images, audio, video, and PDF documents | Text up to 8,192 tokens; up to six PNG or JPEG images per request; MP3 or WAV audio up to 180 seconds; MP4 or MOV video up to 120 seconds; PDF up to six pages. Video is represented by at most 32 frames, and video audio tracks are not processed. | Cross-modal retrieval where visual frames and supported document inputs are sufficient. |
| Amazon Nova Multimodal Embeddings | Text, images, document images, video, and audio in one semantic space | The described documentation lists an 8K-token context and 30 seconds of video or audio for the stated limit. Asynchronous segmentation is described for larger inputs. | Visual similarity, product matching, image discovery, and multimodal RAG. |
| Bedrock Data Automation | Converts multimedia into text | The comparison describes text extraction and transcription rather than image-query embeddings. | Speech transcription, text-based multimedia search, and content analysis. The documented comparison says it does not support image-based queries or image-to-image similarity. |
| Microsoft Image Analysis multimodal embeddings | Image retrieval and visual collection search | Use-case and capability details are model-specific. | Organizing and retrieving image collections; Microsoft says the described feature is not designed for medical diagnostic use. |
Regional availability also differs. The Bedrock comparison reviewed here lists Nova Multimodal Embeddings in US East (N. Virginia), while Bedrock Data Automation appears across additional regions in that table. Verify current regions, quotas, and deployment routes before committing to an architecture.

| Requirement | Prefer | Reason and caveat |
|---|---|---|
| Find visually similar products from a photo | A multimodal embedding model with image queries | It compares visual features directly; add catalog filters for exact attributes. |
| Search spoken words in a video | Speech transcription or an audio-capable workflow | A visual-frame embedding that ignores video audio cannot retrieve dialogue reliably. |
| Search scenes or objects with text | Text-to-image or text-to-video embeddings | Check frame sampling, segment duration, and timestamp handling. |
| Retrieve pages containing text and images for RAG | Multimodal embeddings plus a document-aware index | Preserve page and image relationships so the generator receives the right context. |
| Analyze media by converting it to searchable words | A text-extraction or transcription pipeline | This can support text search but may lose visual-only evidence and image-to-image matching. |
How do dimensions and segmentation affect an embedding system?
Vector dimensionality affects storage, index size, and often the latency of similarity searches. A provider may expose selectable dimensions or describe accuracy and efficiency trade-offs; compare those documented options with a representative evaluation set instead of assuming the largest vector is always best.
Segmentation determines what a result means. A document may produce one vector per page, an image one vector per file, and a video many vectors per frame or clip. Smaller segments can improve pinpoint retrieval but increase indexing cost and may lose surrounding context. Larger segments reduce the number of vectors but can make unrelated content look similar. Store segment boundaries and parent-item IDs so the application can reconstruct context after retrieval.
Are similarity scores probabilities?
No. A dot product or other similarity value measures how two vectors compare under a particular model and index; it is not a calibrated probability that the result is correct. Google Cloud explicitly advises ranking results rather than applying one universal pass/fail threshold.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesDo not compare raw scores across different models, dimensions, normalization settings, or indexing configurations. Evaluate ranked results with labeled queries from the intended corpus, then choose a cutoff or reranking policy based on the business cost of false positives and missed matches. Exact identifiers, dates, categories, and access rules should be enforced with metadata filters rather than inferred from semantic similarity.
How should I evaluate retrieval quality?
Build a small, representative test set before selecting a model. Include the languages, image styles, document layouts, video genres, and query types that users will actually submit.
- Record whether the relevant item appears in the top results, not merely its raw similarity score.
- Test text-to-image, image-to-image, text-to-video, and any mixed query modes your interface will expose.
- Measure segment-level accuracy for media and item-level accuracy for catalogs or documents.
- Check failure cases involving tiny objects, unusual viewpoints, low-quality scans, ambiguous words, and long videos.
- Compare vector dimensions, segmentation choices, filters, and reranking as a complete retrieval pipeline.
No independent cross-provider benchmark in the cited material establishes a universally best model. Vendor-published customer outcomes are useful examples, but they are not interchangeable benchmark results.

What real applications demonstrate the value?
Media and video libraries
Google DeepMind publishes a customer statement from Seth Georgion, vice president of Technology Innovation at Paramount Skydance, reporting that text queries could locate untranscribed micro-expressions and that photos or B-roll clips could be used as search inputs. The statement reports a text-to-video Recall@1 rate of 85.3%; it is an attributed customer experience, not an independently verified cross-provider benchmark.

The same Google DeepMind page attributes reports from Everlaw of improved precision and recall across millions of records. Treat those figures as Everlaw’s reported testing rather than a guaranteed result for another corpus or model.
Similarity-score and latency claims
That page also attributes a latency reduction “by up to 70%” and a similarity-score change from 0.4 to 0.8 to a Sparkonomony statement. Those numbers depend on that organization’s implementation and should not be generalized.
What limitations and safety checks matter?
- Modality gaps: a model may accept a file while ignoring part of it, such as audio in a video request.
- Context loss: frame sampling, page splitting, or short segments can omit information needed to interpret a result.
- Domain mismatch: performance on everyday photos does not establish performance on specialized imagery.
- Medical use: Microsoft explicitly says the image embedding feature described in its documentation is not designed for medical diagnostic purposes. Do not present it as a diagnostic tool.
- Ranking errors: a high similarity score can still be irrelevant, and a useful result can have a lower score than expected.
- Changing limits: API quotas, supported formats, regions, and model versions can change, so pin versions where possible and recheck documentation during deployment.
What does a practical rollout plan look like?
- Define the retrieval task. Decide whether users need visual similarity, speech search, text-to-video discovery, multimodal RAG, recommendations, or clustering.
- Inventory the corpus. List file formats, typical durations and page counts, languages, metadata fields, and the percentage of items that contain audio.
- Select candidate models. Confirm every required modality, query direction, region, context limit, segmentation method, and vector-dimension option.
- Create a labeled evaluation set. Ask domain users to mark relevant results for representative queries and reference images.
- Index a pilot collection. Compare whole-item and segmented representations where long media or multipage documents are involved.
- Add deterministic controls. Apply metadata filters and permission checks before presenting results; use reranking when semantic similarity alone is insufficient.
- Monitor after launch. Track failed queries, empty-result rates, click or selection behavior, latency, index growth, and changes after model or corpus updates.
Is a managed embedding API the right starting point?
Managed APIs are the most directly documented option in the material reviewed here: Google Cloud and Amazon Web Services describe multimodal embedding services, supported use cases, and input behavior. They reduce the need to train a model, but they still require application-side indexing, evaluation, metadata handling, and monitoring.
Pricing is not established by the cited material, so calculate costs from the provider’s current regional pricing, request quotas, storage, reprocessing frequency, and the number of vectors created by segmentation. A long video represented by many clips can cost and store substantially more than one vector per item.
Where can I learn more?
For a broad conceptual treatment, Springer lists From Unimodal to Multimodal Machine Learning: An Overview by Blaž Škrlj (2024). It covers multimodal representations and embeddings and is useful as background reading, but it is not an implementation manual for a current provider API.

What is the bottom line on multimodal embeddings?
Multimodal embeddings matter because they give retrieval systems a shared language for different media. They can make text-to-image, image-to-video, product matching, asset discovery, and multimodal RAG practical, but only within the formats and behaviors the selected model actually supports. Treat vectors as ranked retrieval signals, validate them on your own corpus, preserve metadata and timestamps, and use transcription or deterministic filters when semantic similarity cannot answer the user’s exact question.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can one embedding model understand every type of media?
No. “Multimodal” is model-specific. Check whether the model accepts the exact image, document, video, audio, and query combinations your application needs, and verify whether all parts of a compound file are processed.
Do I need a vector database to use multimodal embeddings?
You need a way to store vectors and perform nearest-neighbor searches, but the implementation can vary. The important design requirements are reliable indexing, metadata filters, parent-item and segment IDs, and a retrieval method that can return ranked candidates.
Should I embed an entire video or split it into clips?
Use whole-item vectors when broad video-level matching is enough; split into timestamped clips or frames when users need a precise moment. Test both because smaller segments improve localization while increasing vector count and context-management work.
Can multimodal embeddings replace a large language model?
No. Embeddings represent content for comparison and retrieval. A separate application component must interpret retrieved material, generate prose, apply business rules, or perform actions.
How often should an embedding index be rebuilt?
Re-embed new or changed content whenever the corpus changes, and plan a broader rebuild when you change models, dimensions, segmentation, or preprocessing. Keep model and index metadata so results remain interpretable during migrations.
