Use Nintendo’s nearby-console save-data transfer to move a Pokémon Pokopia save from your old Switch to a new Nintendo Switch 2. Both consoles must be available, online, nearby, and signed in with the same Nintendo Account. Nintendo Switch Online is not required for this local transfer. The operation is a move, not a duplicate: after the old console sends the file, Nintendo deletes that save from the source system. If the old console is unavailable but an earlier Save Data Cloud backup exists, cloud restoration is an alternative. Follow the preparation and overwrite warnings below before starting.
What do I need before transferring Pokopia?
Prepare both consoles before opening the transfer menu. A failed transfer is easier to avoid than to undo, especially because sending removes the source save and overwriting an existing destination save cannot be reversed. This process is for moving the Pokopia save file, not for copying the whole old console or making a second playable island.
- Have the old Nintendo Switch and the new Nintendo Switch 2 physically available.
- Connect both consoles to the internet and place them close enough for the nearby-console process.
- Link the same Nintendo Account to the user profile that owns the Pokopia save on both consoles. Nintendo only permits save transfers between users linked to the same Nintendo Account.
- Install the latest available system updates on both consoles.
- Update Pokémon Pokopia before transferring. Nintendo’s current support listing identifies version 2.0.1, released September 7, 2026, and says the save remains available after that update.
- Make Pokémon Pokopia available on the destination Switch 2 through the appropriate digital entitlement or a compatible game-key card. A save file does not grant access to the game software.
- Close Pokopia and any other software on both consoles so neither system is using the save during the operation.
Write down which user profile contains the island if the old console has several profiles. The transfer menu lists saves by user, and selecting the wrong profile can send a different game file. Check the title and user carefully before confirming, especially if more than one person plays on the source console.

Which Pokopia transfer method should I use?
The best route depends on whether you have the old console and whether you want only the Pokopia island or a complete console migration. For most players with both systems in hand, the nearby-console method is the direct choice: it selects one game save rather than moving a broader collection of console data.
| Method | Use it when | What it moves | Account and service requirements | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nearby-console save-data transfer | Both consoles are present and you only need Pokopia | The selected Pokopia save | Same Nintendo Account on both users; internet; consoles nearby; Nintendo Switch Online not required | The source save is deleted after sending; a destination save may be overwritten |
| Save Data Cloud | The old console is unavailable but a usable Pokopia backup already exists | The backed-up Pokopia save | Pokopia supports Save Data Cloud; the relevant Nintendo Switch Online access and same account are required for the cloud workflow | No recovery is promised for a save that was never backed up |
| System Transfer | You are replacing the entire old console environment | Users and broader save data, rather than one selected game | Same Nintendo Account on the destination; follow Nintendo’s system-transfer requirements | Some source-console data is deleted, so it is not a reversible copy |
For a single island, choose nearby-console transfer. Choose System Transfer only when you also want the old console’s users and wider data moved. Use the cloud route when the source hardware cannot be used and a backup is already present.
These options solve different problems. Nearby transfer is the clearest fit when both consoles can be used and the goal is specifically Pokopia. System Transfer is a broader migration, not a shortcut for preserving the source console unchanged. Save Data Cloud may let you restore without the old hardware, but only if a usable backup was already made. No one route should be assumed to create a second copy of the island.

Start the send operation on the old console, then complete the receive operation on the new Switch 2. Keep both screens visible until the process reports completion.
1. Open the send menu on the old console
- From the old console’s HOME Menu, open System Settings.
- Select Data Management.
- Select Transfer Your Save Data.
- Select Send Save Data to Another Console.
- When Nintendo asks for the destination type, choose the option for the new Nintendo Switch 2.
- Select the user profile that owns the Pokopia island.
- Choose the Pokémon Pokopia save-data file and select Next.
- Review the selected user and title. Select OK only when they are correct.
The old console then sends the selected file. Do not power off either console, move them out of range, or launch another title while the transfer is running.
2. Receive the save on the new Switch 2
- On the new Switch 2, open System Settings.
- Select Data Management.
- Select Transfer Your Save Data.
- Select Receive Save Data.
- Choose the incoming Pokopia save when it appears.
- If the Switch 2 already contains a Pokopia save for that user, choose whether to cancel or overwrite it.
- Select OK after the transfer finishes.
- Launch Pokémon Pokopia and select the same user profile to open the transferred island.
If you cancel at the overwrite prompt, the existing destination save remains. If you confirm overwrite, Nintendo warns that the replaced destination save cannot be recovered. Consider that decision separately from sending: sending removes the source file, while accepting overwrite risks the existing file on the new console.
Does nearby transfer copy or move the Pokopia save?
It moves the save. Nintendo Support’s nearby-console guide says: “This does not create a copy of your save data. Once sent, the save data file will be deleted from the source system.” The old console therefore should not be treated as a backup after the send operation completes.

Before selecting OK on the old console, verify the Nintendo Account user, the game title, and the destination console. On the new Switch 2, do not approve an overwrite unless the existing Pokopia file is disposable or has already been backed up through an available cloud-save workflow.
This distinction matters if you hope to keep playing one island on both consoles. The nearby procedure is a transfer, not a synchronization service that keeps two copies current. Once sent, the original save is deleted from the source. If the destination already has different Pokopia progress, the receive prompt gives you a choice to stop or replace that destination save; it does not merge the two islands.
Can I transfer Pokopia without Nintendo Switch Online?
Yes. Nintendo Support states that “A Nintendo Switch Online membership is not required to use this feature.” The local method still requires both consoles to be online, close together, and linked through the same Nintendo Account; an internet connection is not the same thing as a paid Nintendo Switch Online membership.
Nintendo Switch Online matters for the optional cloud route, not for the direct console-to-console send and receive process. If both consoles are in front of you, the nearby method avoids depending on a cloud backup. Do not purchase a membership solely because you are using the local transfer menu.

Nintendo’s Pokémon Pokopia product page lists Save Data Cloud support. Cloud restoration can help when the old console cannot be used, but only if the Pokopia save was backed up before the problem and the backup is still associated with the same Nintendo Account.
When cloud restore is appropriate
- The old Switch was lost, damaged, or replaced and cannot complete a nearby transfer.
- A Pokopia cloud backup already exists for the relevant Nintendo Account.
- The new Switch 2 has the required Nintendo Switch Online access for the cloud-save operation.
- Pokémon Pokopia is available on the new console through the account’s entitlement or a compatible game-key card.
What cloud backup cannot guarantee
Nintendo’s published information does not establish a guaranteed recovery procedure for a Pokopia save that existed only on a lost or dead console and was never backed up. A cloud option shown for the game does not prove that every older save was uploaded automatically or that an unbacked-up file can be reconstructed. Confirm that a backup exists rather than assuming that cloud support alone means the island is recoverable.
If both consoles are available, the nearby transfer avoids the separate question of whether a cloud backup is current. If the source console is gone, the existence and account association of the backup become decisive. A newly acquired game copy cannot recreate progress that was not saved to a usable backup.

Should I use System Transfer instead?
Use Nintendo’s System Transfer when the goal is to replace the entire old console, not merely move Pokopia. System Transfer is broader: it moves users and save data as part of a console migration, while the nearby method lets you select one Pokopia save.
Recommended Free Tools
System Transfer also carries a data-retention consequence. Nintendo’s guide warns that some data on the source console is deleted after the transfer, so treat it as a migration rather than a reversible copy. Confirm that the destination uses the same Nintendo Account and read Nintendo’s on-screen warnings before accepting.
If another family member still needs the old console, or if you want to keep its other users and games in place, do not start a whole-console transfer just to move one island. Use the individual save-data workflow instead. Conversely, if you are moving your full user and save environment to the Switch 2, System Transfer is the option designed for that wider purpose; it is not necessary merely because the new console is a Switch 2.
What happens if the destination already has a Pokopia save?
The receive screen asks whether to cancel or overwrite the destination file. Cancel leaves that existing save untouched and stops the incoming transfer. Overwrite replaces it, and Nintendo warns that the overwritten save cannot be recovered.
Decide which island is authoritative before you begin. If the destination file contains progress you might need later, preserve it through an available backup method or stop at the prompt rather than accepting overwrite. The transfer does not combine old and new progress, and a second software entitlement does not change the overwrite decision.
What if the transfer fails or the save does not appear?
Work through the checks below without repeatedly selecting send, because the source file’s deletion status depends on where the process stopped.
The old console cannot find the new console
- Confirm both consoles are connected to the internet.
- Place them close together and keep both awake on their transfer screens.
- Check that the destination is a Nintendo Switch 2, then restart the menu path on both systems if the pairing prompt times out.
- Install pending system updates before trying again.
Pokopia is not listed on the old console
- Switch to the user profile that actually owns the island.
- Confirm that Pokémon Pokopia is installed or that its save exists under System Settings > Data Management.
- Do not assume a second game copy will move the save; the account-linked save file is what must be selected.
The incoming save is missing on Switch 2
- Verify that the destination user is linked to the same Nintendo Account as the source user.
- Check that you completed Receive Save Data, not only the send step.
- Make sure the destination has access to Pokémon Pokopia before launching it.
- Reopen the game under the user profile that received the save.
The process was interrupted
Do not assume that an interrupted transfer created a safe duplicate. Reopen Nintendo’s transfer menu on both consoles and read the current status before attempting another send. If the source file is no longer available, use an existing cloud backup if one exists; Nintendo’s published information does not promise recovery from an unbacked-up source.

Do I need a microSD Express card or Pokémon HOME?
No. A microSD Express card is not required for the Pokopia save transfer. Nintendo discusses microSD Express separately for Switch 2 storage and importing screenshots or videos, not for moving the game’s save through the transfer menu.
Pokémon HOME is also not the tool for transferring a Pokémon Pokopia island. Use Nintendo’s console save-data transfer or the Save Data Cloud workflow instead. Buying or inserting another copy of the game does not transfer the account-linked save.

Does a different Nintendo Account work?
No. Nintendo says a save transfer can only take place between users linked to the same Nintendo Account. If the old Pokopia save belongs to one account and the new console’s intended user is linked to another, do not expect the nearby transfer to move the island between them. Account continuity is a requirement, not an optional convenience.
Check which Nintendo Account is linked to the source user before beginning. If you are setting up a family member’s Switch 2, make sure the receiving user is the one linked to the same account as the user who owns the save. The game being available to another profile does not remove the save-transfer account condition.
How do I verify the move without risking the old save?
After the new Switch 2 reports completion, launch Pokémon Pokopia with the receiving user and confirm that the expected island loads. Check the game’s normal progress indicators and recent location rather than creating new progress immediately.
Once the source send has completed, remember that the old console is no longer a second playable copy of that island. Keep the destination console powered and connected long enough for any account or software checks to finish, then use the normal in-game save process before closing Pokopia.
What should I remember before pressing confirm?
- Same Nintendo Account: the source and destination user profiles must belong to it.
- Both consoles present: nearby transfer needs the old console, the new Switch 2, internet access, and proximity.
- No paid membership for local transfer: Nintendo Switch Online is not required for the nearby method.
- Move, not copy: sending deletes the source save.
- Irreversible overwrite: replacing an existing destination save cannot be undone.
- Game access: Pokopia must be available on the destination through the appropriate entitlement or game-key card.
- Cloud is conditional: Save Data Cloud helps only when a usable backup already exists.
- Choose the scope: nearby transfer is for the selected game save; System Transfer is for broader console migration.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I recover Pokopia if my old Switch was lost before I transferred it?
Only an existing Save Data Cloud backup offers a documented alternative in that situation. If the island existed solely on the lost console and was never backed up, Nintendo’s published information does not promise a recovery method.

Do I have to buy Pokémon Pokopia again for the Switch 2?
The destination console must have access to the game through the applicable digital entitlement or game-key card. The save-data operation moves progress, but it does not supply a game license or create another software copy.
Can I keep playing the same Pokopia island on both consoles?
The nearby operation is designed as a one-way move, so it does not leave two active copies of the selected save. To use the island on another console later, you would need to perform another supported transfer rather than rely on the original source file.
Will updating Pokopia erase my island before the transfer?
Nintendo’s current support listing for version 2.0.1, released September 7, 2026, says the save remains available after downloading the update. Updating both consoles before transferring reduces version-related problems.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

No. Nintendo states that save data can only be transferred between users linked to the same Nintendo Account. Link the same account to the relevant users on both consoles before attempting the nearby transfer.
Is microSD Express needed to move the island?
No. Nintendo discusses microSD Express for storage and importing screenshots or videos, not as a requirement for the Pokopia save-data transfer.
The Bottom Line
For one Pokopia island, use System Settings > Data Management > Transfer Your Save Data on both consoles: send from the old system and receive on the Switch 2. Keep the same Nintendo Account on both users, confirm the correct save, and remember that sending deletes the source file. Nintendo Switch Online is not needed for this local move; cloud restoration is an option only when a usable backup already exists.
