Xbox Play Anywhere supplies one entitlement
Microsoft says Play Anywhere games run on Xbox consoles, Windows 10/11 PCs and supported gaming handhelds without buying separate Xbox and Windows licenses. Its consumer guidance says players can pick up where they left off with saves, add-ons and achievements by signing in with an Xbox account. The developer documentation describes this as a combination of cross-entitlement and cross-progression.
Because Mouthwashing carries the Play Anywhere badge, a digital Xbox purchase is recognized on the compatible Windows Xbox app version under the same account. Game Pass access uses the same Xbox identity, so the console and PC sessions are part of that supported loop rather than two unrelated copies.
Cloud saves carry the current progress
Xbox cloud saves are the synchronization layer. Microsoft describes Xbox cloud game saves as a save shared by the Xbox-console build and the version shipped in the Xbox app on PC. After a session ends, the latest save must finish uploading before the other device opens the game. Windows Report’s Play Anywhere guidance recommends waiting a few seconds after quitting, then launching on the second device with the same Microsoft account.
Play Anywhere is not a promise that every storefront version uses the same files. Microsoft’s documentation distinguishes Xbox cloud saves from the broader PlayFab cross-platform-save route, which can include Steam and other platforms when a developer implements it. No official Mouthwashing page in the available evidence says that broader route is enabled.

Which Game Pass plan gives me the Xbox-and-PC loop?
As of the 29 October 2026 Xbox launch, the published Game Pass listings put Mouthwashing on Ultimate, Premium and PC Game Pass. Only Ultimate combines console and PC access in one subscription.

Haley Uyrus of CRITICAL REFLEX announced on Xbox Wire that the game would launch on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, Xbox One and Game Pass on 29 October 2026, day one. A Game Pass roundup from How To Video Game lists Ultimate, Premium and PC Game Pass; a 27 October lineup report from Shattered likewise lists cloud, Series X|S, handheld and PC, but not Essential.
The store pages are not identical about Essential cloud streaming. The US Xbox cloud page says the game is cloud playable with Essential, Premium or Ultimate and adds that a game purchase is required. The German store says cloud play is included with Premium and Ultimate, while an Essential subscriber must purchase the game to stream it. Treat Essential as requiring a purchase for cloud play unless the account’s regional store states otherwise.
How do I move a save from Xbox to PC?
You need an Xbox console or cloud session, the Xbox app on Windows (or a supported handheld), an eligible entitlement and the same Microsoft account on both devices. Follow this sequence:

The Xbox Store lists Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PC and handheld as play targets. Its cloud page labels the control scheme as controller. The German listing also names Xbox Cloud Gaming. These are all Xbox-side access methods; none changes the status of Steam, PlayStation or Switch saves.
Does the Steam version cross-save with Xbox or PC Game Pass?
No cross-save connection is documented. The Steam edition launched on 26 September 2024, while the Xbox, Xbox-on-PC and Game Pass release arrived on 29 October 2026. A Steam purchase is a different storefront entitlement from the Xbox app version.

Microsoft’s developer documentation says a developer can implement PlayFab cross-platform saves for Steam and other platforms, but the evidence for Mouthwashing only identifies Xbox Play Anywhere and Xbox cloud saves. Therefore, a Steam save should be treated as independent: it cannot be assumed to appear in Xbox or PC Game Pass, and an Xbox save should not be expected to appear in Steam.

Eurogamer reported that the game was available on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Switch and Xbox Series X|S on 29 October 2026. Those console releases likewise have no official statement allowing their saves to be imported into Xbox or PC Game Pass.
Is buying the Xbox version better than using Game Pass for cross-save?
If you want both Xbox and Windows access without maintaining two subscriptions, the Play Anywhere purchase is the simplest entitlement. If you already subscribe to a qualifying plan, Game Pass provides the same Xbox-account save path while the subscription remains active.

What was confirmed at the 29 October 2026 launch?
The Xbox badges were live at launch, although the US store page still displayed a pre-order control on 29 October. The German store marked the game as new, and Eurogamer treated the Xbox release as available that day. Those storefront-state differences do not remove the Play Anywhere or cloud-save capabilities, but they explain why an account may briefly show inconsistent purchase language.
CRITICAL REFLEX reported more than 800,000 Steam copies sold and awards for Best Narrative and Players’ Choice at the Horror Game Awards. Steam showed 95% positive English reviews from 24,988 reviews and 92% positive recent reviews from 410 reviews. Those figures describe the Steam release and reception; they do not measure Xbox cloud-save use or prove cross-platform synchronization.

The US page for product 9MVNCSJ14754 still showed a pre-order control on 29 October 2026, even though the German store marked the game new and release coverage treated it as available. Does Game Pass Essential stream Mouthwashing without buying it?
