Moto G7 Optimo: At First Glance

The Moto G family of smartphones has always been a line of smartphones that you can barely resist because of how value-packed they seem to be. In fact, they’ve gradually increased the standards of budget smartphones by releasing some of the most sought-after budget smartphones such as the Moto G6.

Some years have passed and it seems as though Motorola is still keen on elevating the standards of budget smartphones. The Moto G7 Optimo is a recent testament to this.

Being the successor to the Moto G6 smartphone, the Motorola Moto G7 Optimus shares some similarities with the Moto G6. For example, they both share similar bodies but the Motorola Moto G7 Optimus comes with several upgrades such as its faster processor and increased battery life.

Moto G7 Optimo: Design, Dimension & Weight

The Moto G7 Optimo features the typical Motorola design. If you have come across the Moto G6, you will be familiar with the design structure of the Moto G7 Optimo.

Nearly everything about the design of the Moto G7 Optimo is similar to the Moto G6’s. There are only a few differences in terms of dimensions and little features.

One very important thing, however, is that the Moto G7 Optimus maintains the premium look and feel common with the Moto G series. In fact, it is a sleeker improvement of the Moto G6.

Some of the reasons behind its gorgeous design can be attributed to the design material. The smartphone’s body has a Gorilla Glass shell supported with aluminum that makes it look stylish.

In addition, the reflective glass back on the smartphone stretches over its edges making the feel of the smartphone more comfortable. However, smudges and fingerprints are easily retained because of the glass material.

Also, the Moto G7 Optimo tends to get slippery because of its smooth sides and edges. Hence, you should be careful when holding the smartphone to avoid dropping it.

At the back of the Moto G7 Optimo, you’ll find the rear camera. This camera bumps out from the smartphone a little.

However, it doesn’t stick out long enough to cause discomfort. Below the camera, you’ll find the fingerprint sensor.

Despite having the same body size as the Moto G6, the Moto G7 Optimo features a slightly larger display. Motorola achieved this using the dewdrop notch design to fit the screen closer to the edges.

Due to this, the Moto G7 Optimo ended up having bezels that are even thinner than those on the iPhone XR – but the G7’s bottom bezel is a bit thicker. Despite its thin bezels, the smartphone’s notch still manages to house the speaker, front-facing camera, and an LED flashlight.

At the top of the smartphone, you’ll find the headphone jack.

Moving to the sides, the volume rocker and the power button can be found on the right side. Meanwhile, the left side houses the microSD card and SIM card tray.

On the bottom of the smartphone, you’ll find the USB charging port and a microphone.

In terms of dimensions, the Motorola Moto G7 Optimus is very slim & compact. It measures 148.7 x 71.5 x 8.09 mm.

Weighing just 151 g, the smartphone is also light to move around with.

When I first had the Moto G7 Optimo in my hands, I was amused by how premium it looks and feels. The Moto G7 Optimo has the kind of look and feel that you would only expect in flagship line-ups released by Apple or Samsung.

It gets even more impressive when you consider how affordable the Moto G7 Optimo is. In fact, the Moto G7 Optimo looks like a more affordable version of the OnePlus 6T.

Overall, the Moto G7 Optimo looks more finely produced and well-polished. Hence, it scores an eight in this review.

Moto G7 Optimo: Display Features

Motorola equipped the Moto G7 Optimo with a 5.7-inch IPS LCD display. This display offers a resolution of 1512 x 720 and a pixel density of about 294 PPI.

Also, this display is tagged as an HD+. Although it is not as good as a Full HD display, it’s better than the regular HD screen.

Still on the phone’s display, by removing the fingerprint scanner that used to be on the bottom of the previous Moto G6, Motorola has been able to stretch the G7’s screen.

As a result, the Moto G7 Optimo has a new aspect ratio of 19:9. This aspect ratio makes the smartphone look taller and stretched out.

Furthermore, with the adoption of the teardrop notch design, Motorola is able to offer a wider viewing experience. The smartphone has an impressive 81% screen-to-body.

Hence, watching movies and videos on the smartphones is a remarkable experience.

In terms of the quality of the display, you get a decent viewing experience. The display offers extremely sharp and vibrant colors.

Viewing angles are also great on the Moto G7 Optimo.

In terms of brightness, the Moto G7 Optimo is capable of reaching a peak brightness of 445 nits. Therefore, you don’t need to worry about outdoor usage.

Overall, the G7’s display is bright and colorful. Hence, it scores a seven in this review.

Moto G7 Optimo: Camera Features

Motorola equipped the Moto G7 Optimo with a 13 MP rear camera and an 8 MP front camera. The rear camera has an aperture of f/2.0 while the front camera has an aperture of f/2.2.

In various performance tests, the rear camera’s performance was nothing beyond the expected. It was able to capture acceptable images in bright light.

Image colors seemed to be accurate. However, some of the pictures lacked details on most occasions.

Also, minor blurs were feasible around some of the pictures.

In comparison with high-end cameras, the lower sharpness of the details in this camera was noticeable. Likewise, the camera’s lower brightness in darker areas was also noticeable.

Its performance in low light wasn’t pleasing.

The front camera on the other hand takes good pictures with more detailed sharpness. However, it also put up a poor performance in low light.

In terms of video recording, both cameras can record HD videos at 60 FPS. However, 4K videos can only be recorded at 30 FPS.

The overall quality of video recording is fair enough.

In conclusion, the Moto G7 Optimo scores a seven in this review for its acceptable camera quality and performance.

Moto G7 Optimo: Battery Life and Talk Time

The Moto G7 Optimo features a 3,000 mAh battery. Even though this battery is relatively small, the smartphone’s battery life is good.

The smartphone’s good battery life is a result of its efficient processor that barely consumes power. In practice, the Moto G7 Optimo can last you through an entire day when it has a full battery capacity.

Also, the battery life of the smartphone can even extend further with low to moderate usage.

To give more detail, the Moto G7 Optimo boasts of a 30 hours average battery talk time. It can also last up to 40 hours when on standby mode.

What’s more exciting about the smartphone’s battery life is its fast charging feature. The Moto G7 Optimo supports 10 W fast charging.

However, the smartphone’s battery is not removable. Hence, the battery cannot be swapped.

Nonetheless, the Moto G7 Optimo scores a seven in this review for its impressive battery life and features.

Moto G7 Optimo: Storage Options & Performance

The Moto G7 Optimo comes with 32 GB internal storage. This is one of the strong points of the Moto G7 Optimo considering that there are not so many smartphones that offer 32 GB internal storage.

The 32 GB storage capacity on this smartphone is sufficient for users to store files, apps, and personal data. However, storing a lot of files over an extended period of time could eventually fill up the storage space.

Moreover, only 21 GB of storage capacity is available for your personal use. This is because the smartphone’s operating system makes use of a part of the internal storage.

Thankfully, Motorola provided an option for you to expand your storage via a microSD card. You can expand your storage with up to 512 GB microSD card!

Hence, the Moto G7 Optimo scores an eight in this review for its sufficient storage options.

Moto G7 Optimo: Security Features & Sensors

Technology has seen the need for smartphones to serve purposes beyond receiving and making calls. In fact, smartphones have evolved over time to become what I like to call “little intelligent assistants”.

Smartphones are “Intelligent assistants” in the sense that they technically make life easier by rendering services that you would normally only expect from computers. All of these are made possible by sensors.

Sensors are devices that detect major changes in the nearby environment and send the data to the operating system.

One of the sensors the Moto G7 Optimo comes with includes an accelerometer that senses the changes in the orientation of smartphones. The smartphone uses this sensor to switch between horizontal and vertical orientations.

Another sensor the smartphone features includes an ambient light sensor. This sensor detects the lighting levels in the environment to adjust the display brightness accordingly.

The smartphone’s auto-brightness makes use of this sensor to save battery.

Other sensors the Moto G7 Optimo comes with include an e-compass, Gyroscope, Magnetometer, Proximity, Sensor Hub sensor.

For security, the Moto G7 Optimo features a fingerprint sensor as well as a facial recognition feature. In conclusion, the Moto G7 Optimo scores an eight in this review for its awesome collection of sensors.
