The Morphy Richards Equip MRET24SS is a four-slice toaster built around two long slots rather than four short ones. Each slot is 235 mm long and 30 mm wide, so it can take different bread shapes while using a relatively narrow 157 mm-wide footprint. It has variable browning, cancel, reheat and defrost controls, a high-lift lever and a removable crumb tray. Those specifications make it a plausible fit for households that want four-slice capacity without a wide four-slot body.
The important qualification is performance: the public CHOICE listing shows the categories used for independent testing, but not this model’s scores, and one verified customer reported uneven browning. That account is not enough to establish a general defect. This is therefore a feature, fit and ownership review—not a claim that the MRET24SS has been hands-on tested or that its toast is consistently even.
What is the Morphy Richards Equip MRET24SS?
The MRET24SS is a stainless-steel toaster with two long slots designed to hold four slices in total. Instead of giving each slice its own short slot, it places two slices in each 235 mm-long channel. Morphy Richards markets the arrangement as suitable for varied bread sizes and describes the body as slim for smaller benches.
That layout changes what you should measure before buying. A conventional four-slot toaster is usually wider, while this model is longer front-to-back along the slot direction. The relevant question is not simply whether four slices fit; it is whether your counter has 396 mm of length, 157 mm of width and enough clearance above the 180 mm-high appliance for the lever and bread.

These are manufacturer specifications published by Morphy Richards Australia in 2025. They describe what is supplied, not independent measurements of browning, temperature, speed or control quality.
How does the two-slot, four-slice layout work?
Each long slot is intended to accommodate two slices, giving a four-slice capacity without the width of four separate slots. The 235 mm length is useful for long bakery slices that would protrude from a standard toaster, while the 30 mm width remains the practical limit for thick bread.
What bread is likely to fit?
- Standard sandwich bread: Two slices per slot should be possible when each slice is within the 235 mm length and 30 mm width specification.
- Long slices: The extra slot length is the main design advantage, particularly for elongated sourdough or bakery slices.
- Thick or irregular slices: Measure the slice at its thickest point. A long slot does not guarantee that a very thick slice will lower freely or brown evenly.
- Small pieces: The high-lift lever is intended to raise bread above the slot opening, reducing the need to reach into the toaster.
Because two slices share one heating channel, place them with similar thickness and moisture when you want the closest match. The manufacturer calls the slots deep and self-centering; that is a design claim, not an independent finding that every bread shape will center or brown identically.
How much bench space does the MRET24SS need?
The published footprint is 396 mm long by 157 mm wide, with a height of 180 mm. The long dimension can be easy to overlook in a kitchen where the toaster sits beside a wall or under a cabinet. Measure the usable surface—not just the nominal bench length—and allow room to insert bread, operate the lever and remove the crumb tray.
Countertop checklist
- Confirm at least 396 mm of clear bench length in the direction the toaster will sit.
- Confirm 157 mm of clear width, with additional space if the power cord exits toward a side or rear that is already crowded.
- Keep the top and sides clear of materials that could be damaged by heat; do not assume a cabinet underside is suitable merely because the toaster fits beneath it.
- Leave enough access to slide out the crumb tray without lifting the appliance.
- Check that the 75 cm cord can reach a proper outlet without running across a hot surface or creating a trip hazard.
At 1.68 kg, the toaster is relatively easy to move when you need to empty the tray or wipe the bench. That convenience also means you may need to steady it with one hand while operating the lever if your counter surface is especially smooth.

What controls does it have, and how do you use them?
The control set covers normal browning, frozen bread, cooled toast and stopping a cycle. The manual’s sequence matters for defrosting and reheating: select the function after the lever is depressed, and keep the browning dial at the setting you normally use for defrosting.
Normal toasting
- Place the bread in the slot, keeping fingers and utensils away from the opening.
- Set the variable browning control to your usual starting position.
- Press the lever down until it latches. The cycle begins and the bread lowers into the slot.
- When the cycle ends, the lever rises. Use the high-lift action for smaller slices rather than reaching into the toaster.
Start with the setting you normally use on a toaster, then adjust for your bread. The existence of a numbered or variable control does not establish that adjacent settings produce a predictable shade on every loaf.

Defrosting frozen bread
- Leave the browning control at the setting you normally use; the manual does not instruct you to turn it to a separate frozen-bread position.
- Lower the lever with the frozen slices in place.
- Press the defrost button after the lever is depressed.
- Allow the longer cycle to defrost and toast the bread.
The defrost function changes the cycle duration. It does not provide independent evidence about how evenly frozen bread will brown; frozen and multigrain performance are among the categories CHOICE identifies for testing, but the model-specific results are not publicly shown on the accessed page.
Reheating cooled toast
- Put the previously toasted, now-cool bread back in the slot.
- Press the lever down.
- Select reheat for a short warming cycle.
Reheat is intended for toast that has cooled, not as a way to correct a slice that was substantially undercooked. If a slice needs a different shade, a fresh normal cycle gives you more control than repeatedly reheating it.
Stopping a cycle
Press cancel to stop toasting. Wait for the lever to release and remove the bread only when it is safe to handle. Do not insert a knife, fork or other implement to force the bread out.

How should you clean and maintain it?
Disconnect the toaster from power and let it cool completely before cleaning. The manual says to empty the crumb tray regularly and, with frequent use, remove accumulated crumbs at least once a week. It warns: “Crumbs will accumulate in the crumb tray and could catch fire if not emptied regularly.” It also says not to operate the toaster without the tray fitted.

- Switch off and unplug the toaster.
- Wait until the appliance is completely cool.
- Remove the crumb tray and empty it into a bin. Do not shake crumbs back into the toaster or wash the tray while it is still installed.
- Wipe the tray and exterior as appropriate for the materials, then dry the tray fully.
- Reinsert the tray before the next use.
Frequency depends on how often you toast and how crumbly your bread is. The weekly interval in the manual is a minimum for frequent use, not a reason to ignore visible accumulation between cleanings.
What to do if bread is stuck
Do not probe the slots with metal or other utensils. Unplug the toaster, allow it to cool until it is safe to touch, then gently turn it over and shake it as the manual directs. If the bread will not come free without force, stop rather than damaging the heating elements or insulation; seek service or seller support.
First-use odour
The manual says manufacturing residue or oil on a heating element can produce an odour during initial use. It describes this as normal and says it should not recur after the first few uses. Run the first-use procedure without bread, as instructed, and discontinue use if an odour persists, smoke is abnormal or the appliance shows other signs of damage.
Does the MRET24SS toast evenly?
There is not enough public evidence to give a definitive yes or no. CHOICE lists the MRET24SS and identifies evenness, cycle-to-cycle consistency, multigrain and frozen bread, single-slice performance, controls, cleaning, toasting time and temperature safety as laboratory dimensions. The accessed page keeps this model’s scores and recommendation behind membership, so the listing does not reveal a rating, pass or fail result, or ranking.

One verified ProductReview.com.au account reported that slices toasted unevenly, with one side burning at a setting where a lower setting was insufficient. Morphy Richards replied that it would contact the reviewer. This is a single buyer’s account, not a controlled test or a representative sample. It is fair to treat evenness as an issue worth checking, but not to state that the model generally burns one side or has a confirmed defect.
What evidence would settle the question?
A useful comparison would repeat several cycles with the same bread, photograph both sides under consistent lighting, and include ordinary white bread, multigrain and frozen slices. It should also test one slice alone and four slices together, because loading can change the heat distribution in a long shared slot. Until CHOICE results are available or such a transparent test is performed, toast quality remains unresolved.
What should you compare before buying?
Compare the MRET24SS with another toaster using the bread and bench constraints that matter to you, not just the advertised slice count. The following axes reflect the practical differences that can change satisfaction.
| Comparison question | Why it matters | What is established for MRET24SS |
|---|---|---|
| Will my bread fit? | Slot length and width determine whether slices lower without folding or forcing. | 235 × 30 mm per slot; two long slots. |
| How much counter space is needed? | A narrow width can still conceal a long front-to-back footprint. | 396 × 157 × 180 mm. |
| Can I toast four slices? | Shared long slots differ from four independently controlled short slots. | Manufacturer-rated four-slice capacity through two slots. |
| Will results repeat? | Evenness and cycle-to-cycle consistency matter more than the number of browning positions. | CHOICE categories are identified; model scores are not public on the accessed page. |
| How does it handle frozen or multigrain bread? | Different moisture and surfaces can expose heating differences. | Defrost control is specified; independent performance result is not publicly available. |
| Is cleaning manageable? | Crumbs accumulate quickly in long slots and affect safety. | Removable tray; manual calls for regular emptying and at least weekly removal with frequent use. |
| What protection do I get? | Warranty length and regional terms affect a fault claim. | Two-year domestic warranty stated in Australian manufacturer information. |
| What will it cost today? | Promotions and stock change by retailer and date. | Current price is not a permanent specification; verify the exact MRET24SS listing before purchase. |
What are the main advantages and limitations?
Advantages
- Two long 235 mm slots can accommodate bread shapes that do not sit comfortably in short slots.
- Four-slice capacity is delivered in a body only 157 mm wide.
- Variable browning, defrost, reheat and cancel cover the functions most households use.
- The high-lift lever is useful for retrieving smaller pieces.
- A removable crumb tray simplifies routine maintenance.
- The published two-year domestic warranty gives a defined support period for Australian household use.
Limitations and uncertainties
- The 396 mm length may be awkward on a shallow or crowded bench.
- Two slices share each slot, so this is not the same as four independently controlled slots.
- Manufacturer claims about deep, self-centering slots are not independent usability results.
- CHOICE’s public listing does not disclose the model’s laboratory scores or recommendation.
- One verified customer reported uneven browning, but there is no statistically meaningful review sample establishing a trend.
- The 1250–1450 W rating may matter in kitchens where several high-load appliances share a circuit.
Who is the MRET24SS best suited to?
It is most logical for a household that regularly makes four slices, uses long or bakery-style bread, and has a bench with roughly 400 mm of clear length. The controls are broad enough for frozen and previously toasted bread, and the removable tray supports a regular cleaning routine.
Choose a different layout if you need four separately controlled slots, have very limited front-to-back space, or require a published independent performance score before buying. If even browning is the deciding factor, obtain the model-specific CHOICE results or perform a repeatable comparison during the retailer’s return period rather than relying on the feature list.

What should you check when buying?
- Confirm the listing says MRET24SS, not a visually similar Morphy Richards toaster with different dimensions.
- Check that the seller is offering the stainless-steel, four-slice model and note the purchase date for warranty purposes.
- Measure your bench against 396 × 157 × 180 mm and account for cord routing and crumb-tray access.
- Compare your thickest regular slice with the 30 mm slot width.
- Check the retailer’s current price, stock, delivery condition and return policy; any displayed offer is temporary.
- Keep the invoice and product identification details in case you need to use the two-year domestic warranty.
Verdict: is the Morphy Richards Equip MRET24SS worth considering?
The MRET24SS is worth considering when its physical design solves a specific problem: four slices in two long slots, with a relatively narrow width and support for long bread. Its controls and maintenance requirements are conventional and clearly described, and the published dimensions make fit-checking straightforward.
It is not possible to award it a confident toast-quality verdict from the public evidence. CHOICE’s scores are gated, and one customer’s uneven-browning report is too limited to represent the model as a whole. Treat evenness, repeatability and frozen-bread performance as open questions, verify the exact retailer terms and price, and buy it when the long-slot format and your available bench space matter more than an already-established independent score.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the MRET24SS have a bagel or single-sided toasting mode?
The listed controls are variable browning, cancel, reheat and defrost; no bagel or dedicated single-sided mode is specified. If that function is essential, confirm the control panel and manual for the exact regional model before ordering.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Can I run the toaster with only one slice?
The appliance is designed around two shared long slots, so one slice can be placed in a slot, but the public material does not provide an independent single-slice performance result. Expect to fine-tune the browning setting for your bread rather than assuming the four-slice setting will transfer unchanged.
Is the two-year warranty valid outside Australia?
The manufacturer information states a two-year domestic warranty in an Australian context. Coverage, service arrangements and voltage requirements may differ elsewhere, so international buyers should obtain written confirmation from the local seller.
What should I do if the first-use smell does not disappear?
The manual says a manufacturing-residue smell can occur during the first few uses and should then stop. If it persists, is accompanied by unusual smoke, sparking or visible damage, unplug the toaster and contact the seller or manufacturer instead of continuing to operate it.
