The MNT Reform is a modular Linux laptop for people who value hardware access, customization and repair over thinness or conventional laptop design. MNT Research’s current shop listing describes an RK3588-based configuration with 16 GB of memory, replaceable processor modules, owner-serviceable batteries and extensive published documentation. It is not a fully open system: MNT flags binary firmware for the current module’s memory and graphics, and the power supply is sold separately.
Which MNT Reform is this?
This article describes the classic MNT Reform laptop as listed by MNT Research in 2026, specifically its RK3588 RCORE processor-module configuration. MNT says the Reform was introduced in 2020 and revised over time. Its current product page is the relevant specification source: an older Reform listing describes a discontinued version with an i.MX8MQ module and materially different specifications, so those details should not be mixed into a description of the current machine. MNT Research’s current Reform listing and its old-version listing distinguish the generations.
The Reform family also includes products such as Pocket Reform, Reform Next and the standalone Reform Keyboard. Those are separate products, not configurations of the classic laptop discussed here; MNT’s Reform series page covers the broader family.
What does the current RK3588 configuration include?
MNT’s current listing specifies an RK3588 RCORE module with an eight-core CPU: four Cortex-A76 cores and four Cortex-A55 cores. It lists 16 GB of LPDDR4 memory and a Mali-G610 MP4 GPU. MNT says the GPU supports OpenGL/ES 3.3 and Vulkan with the open-source Panthor driver, while identifying binary DDR and GPU firmware as drawbacks. These are manufacturer specifications and characterizations, not independent benchmark results.

| Component | Current listing |
|---|---|
| Display | 12.5-inch, 1920 × 1080 IPS |
| Built-in storage | 256 GB eMMC |
| Expansion storage | M.2 M-key NVMe socket; NVMe storage is optional |
| External ports | Three USB 3.0 Type-A ports; Gigabit Ethernet |
| Other slots and connections | Full-size SD card slot, miniPCIe and two internal USB 2.0 connections for input devices |
| Wireless | Optional Intel Wi-Fi 6E/Bluetooth 5.3 card; MNT notes Wi-Fi is required for the RK3588 option |
| Input | Mechanical keyboard with individually programmable RGB backlight and optical trackball with five switches |
| Chassis | Modular aluminum chassis with acrylic bottom panel |
| Weight | About 1.9 kg, according to MNT |
The display, ports, input devices and weight are figures and descriptions from MNT’s current product listing, not independently verified measurements. The keyboard and trackball are unusual choices: they may suit users who want tactile keys and a built-in pointing device, but they are not a conventional laptop keyboard-and-touchpad setup.
What is modular, and what can an owner service?
MNT describes the processor module as connecting through a 200-pin SO-DIMM connector and presents interchangeable module families as a way to support repairs, upgrades and reuse. That gives the Reform a different upgrade path from a laptop whose processor is permanently integrated into the main board. It does not, by itself, guarantee that a future module will be available, affordable or compatible with every existing configuration. MNT’s modularity overview lists module families and discusses the limits of their openness.

- Please note that the protective film only covers the Active Area, not the entire device screen.
- 9H Hardness can effectively resist daily scratches.
- Dust-free,bubble free,one-push super easily installation.
- Oleophobic Screen Coating protects against sweat and oil residue from fingerprints.
- Moderate thickness keep the screen responsive to every touch and tap.
The current listing describes eight owner-serviceable 18650 LiFePO4 cells, with a stated 12 Ah/3.2 V battery specification. MNT estimates approximately five hours of runtime. Treat that as the manufacturer’s approximate figure, not a measured result: runtime will depend on workload and settings, and no independent battery test is established here.
MNT’s documentation index provides an operator handbook, DIY assembly manual, electronics sources and system-controller firmware, along with manuals and source materials for processor modules. Those materials make it possible to consult the design and repair documentation; they do not establish how easy, inexpensive or successful a particular repair will be.

How open is the Reform?
MNT publishes hardware, firmware and software materials and documents repair and modification paths, but “open hardware” should not be read as meaning every part of the current configuration is open source. MNT specifically identifies binary DDR and GPU firmware as limitations of the RK3588 configuration. Its modularity overview also notes that some modules rely on closed-source firmware for components such as DDR or Wi-Fi/Bluetooth.
For a buyer, the useful distinction is between access to design information and complete openness of every component. The Reform offers substantial published documentation and modular hardware, while some low-level firmware remains proprietary according to MNT. Check the documentation and the specific module details if firmware openness is a deciding requirement.

What must you buy separately?
MNT says a power supply is not included and recommends a USB-C Power Delivery charger rated at 65 W or higher. The same listing offers NVMe storage and an Intel wireless card as optional configurations; the machine also has built-in 256 GB eMMC. Since MNT says Wi-Fi is required for the RK3588 option, a buyer choosing that module should confirm the wireless configuration before ordering.
These omissions and options affect the complete setup cost, not just the laptop’s listed price. Confirm the current shop price, selected options, charger output and compatibility before purchase; the listing can change. MNT names Anker and Ugreen as charger examples, but a brand name alone does not establish that a particular model supplies the required USB-C PD output.

Who is the MNT Reform for?
The Reform makes most sense for a Linux user who values repair access, published design materials and the ability to change processor modules, and who is comfortable with a distinctive keyboard-and-trackball layout. Its approximately 1.9 kg listed weight and MNT’s approximate five-hour battery figure are less compelling priorities for someone seeking an especially light laptop or all-day endurance.
It is also a poor fit if complete firmware openness is essential: MNT acknowledges proprietary firmware in parts of the current configuration. And because MNT’s product page does not supply independent benchmarks, buyers should not infer a particular level of application or graphics performance from the core count and GPU name alone. Compare the specific processor module, firmware situation, input design and total configured cost against your own requirements rather than treating “modular” as a universal advantage.
