Yes—if you need high-speed networking and expansion. The MINISFORUM MS-01 is an unusually capable mini PC with two 10GbE SFP+ ports, two 2.5GbE RJ45 ports, three documented M.2 storage paths, USB4, and a low-profile PCIe slot. That makes it a compelling compact homelab, virtualization, NAS, firewall/router, or network-heavy workstation platform.
It is not a universal best-buy mini PC. The PCIe connector runs at PCIe 4.0 x8 rather than full x16, the card must be low profile and single slot, U.2 replaces the primary M.2 path, reported 96GB memory support is unofficial, and hybrid-core CPU behavior may require extra hypervisor planning.
The short verdict
The MINISFORUM MS-01 mini PC is worth buying when you specifically need dual 10GbE SFP+ networking, multiple internal SSD options, or a low-profile PCIe expansion slot in a compact system. Those features make it unusually capable as a homelab node, virtualization host, NAS companion, firewall/router platform, or network-heavy workstation.
It is not the sensible default for office work, web browsing, or a low-cost living-room computer. The MS-01 is larger and more specialized than a typical mini PC, its PCIe slot has strict physical and power limitations, and its headline networking figure should not be mistaken for a single-port real-world speed.
What makes the MS-01 different?
Most mini PCs offer one Ethernet port, two at most, and no practical internal expansion beyond a single M.2 drive. The MS-01 is built around a different idea: put workstation- and server-style connectivity into a compact enclosure.

Processor choices and everyday performance
MINISFORUM offers the MS-01 with Intel’s Core i9-13900H and Core i9-12900H. Both processors are listed as having 14 cores and 20 threads, combining performance and efficiency cores. The newer 13900H reaches a listed maximum of 5.4GHz, while the 12900H is listed at up to 5.0GHz.

The system pairs the processors with DDR5 memory and a cooling system designed for a compact but relatively powerful enclosure.
In comparison testing, the MS-01 outperformed a Geekom Mini IT13 in several graphics and multicore tests. The difference was attributed partly to DDR5 memory bandwidth. Those results are useful for understanding the platform, but they are not a promise of identical performance across every MS-01 configuration. Memory population, SSDs, firmware, power policy, operating system, and the selected processor all affect results.
The integrated Intel Iris Xe graphics are appropriate for desktop use, multiple displays, media, development tools, and light GPU-assisted tasks. The MS-01’s real graphics upgrade path is the PCIe slot, and that path is much more constrained than the processor specification might initially suggest.
Networking: the reason to buy it
The MS-01 has four built-in wired-network interfaces: two 10Gbps SFP+ ports based on Intel X710 hardware and two 2.5GbE RJ45 ports using Intel i226-family interfaces, according to independent coverage.

The SFP+ ports can connect to suitable network equipment using a compatible 10Gb SFP+ DAC cable or compatible transceiver. Depending on the installation, that may mean a direct DAC connection to a NAS or switch, an optical module and fiber run, or a copper-compatible SFP+ module. Compatibility between the NIC, module, cable, switch, temperature rating, and driver should be checked rather than assumed.
The two RJ45 ports are useful alongside the SFP+ interfaces. For example, one can handle management while another serves clients, or the ports can be assigned to different network segments in a router, firewall, or virtualization setup. The exact configuration depends on the operating system, driver support, and network software.
MINISFORUM advertises a theoretical aggregate figure of up to 65Gbps when the networking and USB4 capabilities are considered together. That is a marketing sum of interfaces and capabilities, not a single 65Gbps Ethernet connection and not a guarantee of application-level throughput. Real transfer rates depend on the switch, storage devices, protocol overhead, PCIe paths, CPU load, cables or optics, and the workload.
What you need to use the 10GbE ports
The MS-01 does not by itself create a 10GbE network. If you want several devices to communicate at 10Gbps, you will generally need a compatible 10GbE SFP+ switch, or a direct connection between the MS-01 and another suitable SFP+ device. A switch should be selected for its port count, SFP+ compatibility, management features, cooling, and total switching capacity—not simply its advertised port speed.

For a direct point-to-point link, a compatible DAC cable is usually the simplest arrangement over a short distance. Fiber and optical modules make more sense for longer runs or existing fiber infrastructure. Do not buy an arbitrary SFP+ optic or DAC cable without checking compatibility with both ends.
Storage expansion: unusually flexible, with an important U.2 trade-off
Storage is one of the MS-01’s strongest features. Independent coverage documents three M.2 positions. The primary slot accepts an M.2 2280 PCIe 4.0 drive, but it can alternatively be used with U.2 storage. The other positions support M.2 drives in 2280 and 22110 formats.
MINISFORUM’s product material claims support for up to 24TB of SSD storage. That figure describes a maximum configured capacity, not necessarily the capacity of every retail bundle. Drive availability, installed-drive configuration, operating-system support, and the current product variant all matter.

The critical point is that U.2 is an alternative to the primary M.2 position. It does not provide a completely independent fourth storage position. Choosing U.2 enterprise storage means giving up that primary M.2 path.
Physical fit also deserves attention. Normal-height U.2 drives can interfere with the internal fan assembly, and the exact adapter arrangement affects clearance. Before ordering, confirm the drive’s height and the adapter’s dimensions—not merely its electrical interface.
For most buyers, an M.2 NVMe SSD is the simpler upgrade path. Use U.2 when you have a specific reason, such as an existing enterprise drive or a required U.2 form factor, and when you have verified the mechanical clearance.
Memory: plan around two SO-DIMM slots
The MS-01 uses two DDR5 SO-DIMM slots, so memory upgrades require laptop-style modules rather than desktop DIMMs. A barebone configuration is attractive if you already know the memory and storage layout you need, but the cost of suitable parts should be included in the total system budget.
Independent coverage has reported successful configurations up to 96GB. That is an unofficial result, not a universal manufacturer guarantee. Compatibility can depend on module density, speed, rank organization, BIOS behavior, and the specific kit. If you need more than the officially listed capacity, verify the current supported-memory information and be prepared for a BIOS or module-compatibility issue.

For a virtualization host, matched modules are preferable because they simplify dual-channel operation and capacity planning. For a normal desktop, the standard bundled capacity may be sufficient; buying the largest possible kit is not automatically worthwhile.
PCIe expansion: a major advantage, but not a desktop replacement
A PCIe slot is rare in a mini PC, and the MS-01 has one. However, its physical x16 connector operates electrically at PCIe 4.0 x8. That is still a useful amount of connectivity for many network adapters, storage controllers, accelerators, and selected graphics cards, but “x16 slot” should not be read as full x16 electrical bandwidth.

- The card must be low profile.
- It must be single slot; thick dual-slot cards are not a safe assumption.
- It should be shorter than approximately 170mm.
- The system does not supply an auxiliary PCIe power connector for a card.
- Card power draw, cooling, drivers, and operating-system support must all be checked.
MINISFORUM has identified an NVIDIA RTX A2000 Mobile-class option as a target GPU category. That does not mean every A2000-branded card will fit or operate correctly. The card’s exact board design, bracket, cooler, connector arrangement, firmware, and driver support matter.
If graphics are the main reason you are shopping, treat the MS-01 as a specialized platform rather than a small gaming desktop. A low-profile single-slot PCIe card may be a good fit for a particular networking, storage, or accelerator task, but validate the complete card specification before purchase. Do not choose an arbitrary GPU based only on the x16-shaped connector.
Virtualization and homelab suitability
The MS-01 is a strong candidate for a compact virtualization node because it combines many CPU threads, multiple network interfaces, expandable storage, and PCIe connectivity. Independent testing and coverage discuss or evaluate Windows, Ubuntu, and Proxmox VE, while VMware ESXi is also relevant to prospective server deployments.
There is one important complication: both processor options use a hybrid performance-core/efficiency-core design. Modern hypervisors can handle hybrid CPUs differently, and some may require more planning around core scheduling, CPU topology, firmware settings, microcode, and power management. ServeTheHome specifically notes that hybrid processors can create challenges in environments such as ESXi. This is a configuration consideration, not evidence that the MS-01 is universally incompatible with ESXi or another hypervisor.
Before deploying a production Proxmox home lab or an ESXi-based host, check the current hypervisor support matrix and test the exact BIOS and kernel combination you intend to use. Confirm that all four network interfaces appear correctly, that storage controllers are visible, and that the workloads receive the expected performance. A configuration that works under Windows may still require different drivers or settings under a hypervisor.

The product material identifies Intel vPro compatibility, which can make the MS-01 interesting for managed deployments. The actual usefulness of vPro depends on the processor, motherboard firmware, management software, network configuration, and the features supported by the selected operating environment.
Headless management may also need special handling. In scenarios where vPro or the graphics stack expects a display to be attached, an optional HDMI dummy plug can help present a monitor connection. It is not a required accessory for every server installation; use it only if the chosen remote-management workflow needs one.

These are review measurements, not universal wall-power specifications. Additional SSDs, a PCIe card, displays, USB devices, firmware, power policy, and workload can all change the result. A homelab buyer should budget for the system’s sustained draw and the possible power consumption of connected network and storage equipment.

- Choose the processor variant. The Core i9-13900H has the higher listed maximum clock, while the Core i9-12900H may be appropriate if the price and availability make it the better value. Do not assume an old review’s price still applies.
- Decide whether you want a barebone or populated system. Confirm whether the listing includes memory, storage, or a particular CPU before comparing prices.
- Map the storage first. Decide how many M.2 drives you need and whether U.2 is genuinely necessary. Remember that U.2 replaces the primary M.2 route.
- Choose compatible DDR5 SO-DIMMs. Verify module capacity, density, speed, and BIOS compatibility. Treat 96GB as an unofficial possibility, not a guaranteed specification.
- Measure the PCIe card. Confirm low-profile height, single-slot width, length below approximately 170mm, power draw, cooling clearance, and the absence of a required auxiliary power connector.
- Plan the network. Identify whether you need a switch, a DAC cable, optical modules, or fiber. Make sure the SFP+ equipment is compatible with the MS-01’s interfaces.
- Check the operating system. For virtualization, confirm current support for hybrid Intel processors, the X710 and i226-family interfaces, storage, and the exact hypervisor version.
- Verify current stock and bundle contents. The official product page was shown as out of stock in the supplied research snapshot, and retail configurations can change. Check availability at publication or purchase time.
Who should buy the MS-01?
Buy it if you need:
- Two integrated 10GbE SFP+ connections without using the PCIe slot.
- Additional 2.5GbE copper ports for management, clients, or separate networks.
- Several internal SSD paths in a compact enclosure.
- A low-profile PCIe slot for a carefully selected network, storage, accelerator, or graphics card.
- A compact virtualization host, NAS companion, firewall/router, developer lab, or networked workstation.
- USB4 and multiple displays alongside unusually capable wired networking.
Choose something else if you mainly want:
- A cheap computer for browsing, office work, or streaming.
- The smallest possible mini PC.
- A guaranteed plug-and-play desktop GPU upgrade.
- A completely silent or exceptionally low-power living-room system.
- A virtualization host whose hypervisor has not been tested with hybrid-core scheduling.

Final assessment
The MS-01 earns its place by integrating capabilities that normally require a small server, add-in cards, or a collection of USB adapters. Dual 10GbE SFP+, dual 2.5GbE, multi-drive storage, USB4, and PCIe expansion make it one of the more interesting compact platforms for a serious homelab or network-focused workstation.
That same specialization is why it should not be recommended as a general-purpose mini PC without qualification. The PCIe slot is constrained, U.2 has a storage trade-off, 96GB memory support is not universally guaranteed, and hybrid CPU behavior deserves attention in some hypervisors. Buy the MS-01 when those capabilities solve a specific problem; otherwise, a simpler mini PC will likely be easier and more economical.
