Short answer: choose Nintendo Switch 2 if you want handheld play, four-player split-screen, and Bedrock cross-play from the sofa. Choose a Windows PC if you want mouse-and-keyboard precision, Java mods and servers, higher graphics headroom, or no console online-subscription fee. The decisive compatibility rule is edition-based: Switch 2 runs Bedrock, so a PC friend must launch Bedrock too. Java Edition cannot join Switch 2 worlds or Realms.
The native Switch 2 release launched on 27 October 2026 as Bedrock 26.60. It adds Vibrant Visuals and faster hardware, but launch measurements vary sharply by graphics mode, and Nintendo and Mojang have not published an official frame-rate or output-resolution target.

| Windows PC Java | Mods, community servers and shaders | Java-only network; no native controller support | Included in Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition; also included with PC Game Pass (subscription price not stated) | Windows, macOS and Linux (Java); Windows bundle includes both editions | Oct 2026 |
Which version of Minecraft does Switch 2 use?
Switch 2 uses Bedrock Edition only. The native game is a separate, hardware-optimised Switch 2 product that shipped with Bedrock 26.60 on 27 October 2026; the older Switch release still runs through backward compatibility.
A Windows purchase called Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition contains two launchable products. Select Bedrock to play with Switch 2, Xbox, PlayStation, Android or iPhone players. Select Java to access Java servers, mods and community shader packs, but Java players stay on the Java network.

Edition and platform map
| Edition | Where it runs | Who it can join | Controller and touch | Mods and content |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bedrock | Switch 2, Switch, Xbox, PlayStation, Windows 10/11, Android and iOS | Other Bedrock players across supported platforms | Native controller and touch support | Marketplace, featured servers, Realms Plus and achievements |
| Java | Windows, macOS and Linux | Other Java players on Windows, Mac or Linux | No native controller support | Community mods, shader packs and Java servers |
Java and Bedrock do not join each other’s worlds or Realms. Mojang has no official bridge between them. Community proxy projects exist, but they are unsupported and can add version, server and account problems, so they are not a dependable family setup.
Can I play Minecraft Switch 2 with my friend on PC?
Yes, if the PC player launches Bedrock. Both players need Microsoft accounts, and the Switch 2 player also needs Nintendo Switch Online for online multiplayer. A PC player launching Java will not see the Switch 2 friend, even if both games show the same Minecraft branding.
How to join the same Bedrock world
- Sign in to a Microsoft account on Switch 2 and on the Windows PC.
- On the PC, start the Bedrock edition from the Java & Bedrock launcher; do not choose Java.
- Add each other through the Microsoft/Xbox friends system and accept the invitation.
- Have one player load a Bedrock world or Realm, then use the Friends tab to join.
- Confirm that the Switch 2 account has an active Nintendo Switch Online membership; the PC does not need a Nintendo, Xbox or PlayStation platform subscription.
Bedrock cross-play also covers Xbox, PlayStation and mobile devices. The same Microsoft-account rule applies. Store currencies differ by platform: PlayStation uses Tokens, while Nintendo-bought Minecoins remain tied to the Nintendo ecosystem.
Does Minecraft on Switch 2 have mouse mode?
No. At launch, Switch 2 exposes analog-stick controls and touchscreen input, but no mouse mode and no motion controls. Nintendo Life’s Mitch Vogel described the omissions as “bizarrely lacking”; the Switch 2 Joy-Con hardware can act as a mouse in other software, but Minecraft does not expose that function in Bedrock 26.60.
Handheld, tabletop and TV modes are supported. Touch controls can help with inventory and menu work in handheld mode, while sticks handle movement and aiming. If precise block placement, rapid inventory keys or competitive player-versus-player aiming matter, a keyboard and mouse on PC remain the more capable option.
PC input choices
Windows Bedrock offers three input profiles: keyboard and mouse, controller, and touch. Java is built around keyboard and mouse and has no native controller support. Game8 also found PC-only video options for input-response improvement and a Classic-versus-Pocket UI profile; those settings are not present on Switch 2.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Does Switch 2 Minecraft run at 60fps or 120fps?
There is no single verified number. Nintendo and Mojang do not publish an official Switch 2 frame-rate or output-resolution target. Nintendo Life described a 60fps target with drops in demanding scenes, while Game8’s frame counting in Bedrock 26.60 recorded lower averages in the tested modes. Reports of 120fps are player observations, not an official specification.

Launch measurements and their limits
| Configuration | Load time | Daytime frame rate | Bee-swarm scene |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows PC, Bedrock | About 2.8 seconds | About 53–59fps | About 57–58fps |
| Native Switch 2, Vibrant Visuals | About 19.6 seconds | About 22–30fps | About 26–30fps |
| Native Switch 2, performance mode | About 20.3 seconds | About 30–32fps | About 30fps |
| Original Switch version running on Switch 2 hardware | About 12.6 seconds | About 29–38fps | About 30fps |
These are Game8 measurements from 2026 using the same world. The frame counts came from 60fps recordings with duplicate frames removed, so that method cannot detect 120fps output. It also explains why a player report of 120fps with Vibrant Visuals disabled and render distance reduced is not directly comparable: the capture pipeline could not observe that mode.
Ludens Media, citing overseas reports and Game*Spark on 28 October 2026, reported claims of stable 120fps in reduced settings, up to native 1440p in TV mode and 1080p handheld. Those figures remain unverified by Nintendo or Mojang. Treat them as possible launch configurations rather than guaranteed performance.
Why native Switch 2 can load more slowly than the old version
In Game8’s comparison, the backward-compatible Switch version loaded in about 12.6 seconds on Switch 2 hardware, versus about 19.6 seconds for native Switch 2 with Vibrant Visuals and about 20.3 seconds in its performance/quality-priority mode. Native rendering performs more work during world preparation, so newer hardware does not automatically mean shorter waits in every build.
Bedrock 26.60 launch notes included Switch 2-specific fixes for split-screen performance, network stability and Vibrant Visuals world-preview glitches. Performance is therefore a live patch target, and a later update may change these launch-week figures.
What graphics does Switch 2 add, and how does PC compare?
Vibrant Visuals is enabled by default on the native Switch 2 version. Its modern graphics pipeline adds directional lighting, volumetric fog, dynamic shadows and reflective water. You can switch to the flatter look in video settings, trading visual effects for a higher frame-rate possibility.
Vibrant Visuals is unavailable in split-screen and may be disabled by certain Marketplace worlds or content. Switch 2 does not offer ray tracing. Bedrock on a Windows PC can use ray tracing only with a DirectX Raytracing-capable GPU and compatible Marketplace content; Game8’s test PC did not expose the option.
Render distance and image options
| Setting | Original Switch version | Native Switch 2 | PC Bedrock example |
|---|---|---|---|
| Recommended distance | 12 chunks | 20 chunks in performance mode; 16-chunk display distance with Vibrant Visuals | Finer slider; Game8 showed 45 chunks in performance mode |
| Vibrant Visuals | No | Yes | Yes |
| Custom graphics, shadows, reflections and bloom | No | Yes | Yes |
| Ray tracing | No | No | Only on a compatible DXR GPU with suitable content |
Java follows a different graphics path. Its visual ceiling comes from community shaders and mods rather than Vibrant Visuals, and those packs are not installable on Switch 2. Bedrock Marketplace cosmetics are paid content; Java’s community packs are generally distributed as free downloads, with their own compatibility and moderation considerations.

Exclusive content on Switch 2
Every Switch 2 edition includes the Super Mario Mash-Up Pack. Mojang lists an update for Vibrant Visuals, Peach’s Castle and Delfino Plaza, plus 15 tracks and 40 player skins. It is Nintendo-exclusive content and does not turn the Switch 2 build into Java Edition.
Which platform is better for couch co-op and online multiplayer?
Switch 2 is the clear choice for same-screen play: Bedrock consoles support up to four local split-screen players. PC and mobile have no split-screen mode. Local wireless or online sessions can support two to eight players according to Nintendo Life and other launch listings, while the exact experience depends on the selected world and network setup.
Vibrant Visuals turns off in split-screen to keep the multi-view workload manageable. If every player has a separate screen, Bedrock cross-play lets Switch 2 join Windows Bedrock, Xbox, PlayStation and mobile users.
Subscriptions and recurring costs
| Platform and activity | Required subscription |
|---|---|
| Switch 2 online multiplayer and cloud saves | Nintendo Switch Online, sold separately |
| Windows Java or Bedrock online | No Nintendo, Xbox or PlayStation platform subscription |
| Xbox Bedrock online | Game Pass Essential or above |
| PlayStation Bedrock online | PlayStation Plus |
| Bedrock Realm on a console | The console’s platform subscription still applies |
Realms prices reported by Gamers Together from Minecraft pricing on 19 October 2026 were $3.99 per month for Bedrock Realms (host plus two players), $7.99 for Bedrock Realms Plus (host plus 10 and the Marketplace Pass catalogue), and $7.99 for Java Realms (host plus 10). The guide also reported a first month free for new subscribers; verify the live offer before subscribing because these prices and promotions can change.
Bedrock Dedicated Servers can accept Switch 2 clients, but consoles cannot type an arbitrary custom address and port in the way PC and mobile can. Featured partner servers are the practical console option.
How much does Switch 2 Minecraft cost, and is the upgrade free?

Minecoin restrictions after the upgrade
Minecoins bought on a Nintendo device from 27 October 2026 onward must be spent within the Nintendo ecosystem. Minecoins purchased elsewhere cannot be spent on Nintendo. Balances held before 27 October remain in a Legacy Wallet and continue to work across platforms. Read a gift card’s platform list before buying; some cards omit Nintendo.
What PC hardware does Minecraft need?
Bedrock is the lighter PC choice. Mojang’s 2026 minimum targets 1080p at 30fps on the Fast preset with Windows 10 build 19041.0 or newer, 4GB RAM and a Celeron J4105 or FX-4100-class processor with Intel HD Graphics 4000, Radeon R5 220 or equivalent Shader Model 5.0 graphics. The recommended configuration is 8GB RAM and an i7-6500U or A8-6600K-class CPU with GeForce 940M or Radeon HD 8570D graphics.
Recommended Free Tools
Java’s minimum target also assumes 1080p at 30fps on Fast, but calls for Windows 10 64-bit, Windows on ARM, macOS 12 or newer, or 64-bit Linux; 8GB RAM with a discrete GPU or 12GB with integrated graphics; four physical CPU cores; and a Vulkan 1.3 GPU with at least 2GB VRAM. Mojang’s recommended Java configuration for 1080p at 60fps on Fancy is 16GB RAM, an i5-12400, Ryzen 5 5600 or Apple M2 Pro-class CPU, and RTX 2060, RX 5600 XT, Arc A580 or M2 Pro graphics with 6GB VRAM.
Mojang describes Minecraft as more CPU-intensive than GPU-intensive. Bedrock needs at least 4GB of storage and 8GB recommended; Java needs 2GB minimum and 4GB recommended. Mods, high render distances and shaders can raise Java’s real requirements beyond those baselines.

Choose PC Bedrock for precise controls and console cross-play
- You want keyboard-and-mouse aiming while staying on the Bedrock network.
- You want adjustable render distance, optional ray tracing and PC video controls.
- You prefer not to pay a Nintendo platform subscription for online play.
- You have a modest Windows laptop; Bedrock’s official requirements are lower than Java’s.
Bedrock on Windows is the practical bridge between a Switch 2 household and a mouse-equipped PC. It does not provide Java’s mod ecosystem or Java-only servers.

Choose PC Java for mods and the established Java server ecosystem
- You need community mods, shader packs, historical versions or Java-specific servers.
- You use macOS or Linux, where Java is the supported desktop edition.
- You are comfortable using keyboard and mouse and meeting the higher memory recommendation.
Java cannot join a Switch 2 friend. A Windows owner who wants both ecosystems can keep Java for mods and launch Bedrock from the same purchase whenever the other player is on Switch 2.
How the picks were determined
The comparison weighs edition compatibility, control options, graphics settings, measured launch performance, split-screen and portability, subscription requirements, mod and server access, and the Switch 2 upgrade rules documented for October 2026.
Why is Minecraft lagging on Switch 2?
Start by identifying whether the slowdown is rendering, network latency or world simulation. Vibrant Visuals, high render distance, dense mobs and split-screen can all increase workload; a delayed online response points instead to connection or server conditions.
- Open Video Settings and switch from Vibrant Visuals to the flatter graphics mode.
- Reduce render distance from the recommended 16-display-distance Vibrant Visuals setting or 20 chunks in performance mode.
- Test the same world alone. If solo play is smooth but online play stutters, check Wi-Fi, NAT and the host or Realm connection.
- For split-screen, expect Vibrant Visuals to be disabled and close background software or downloads.
- Install Bedrock updates when offered; 26.60 launch patches already addressed split-screen, network and preview-screen issues.
Do not assume that a reported 120fps setting is guaranteed. Player reports require Vibrant Visuals to be off and lower render distance, while official specifications still omit a 120fps target.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I transfer my old Nintendo Switch Minecraft worlds to Switch 2?
Yes. Mojang and Nintendo document world carry-over from Nintendo Switch to Switch 2. The transfer applies to worlds, while the native Switch 2 build itself remains a separate Bedrock product with its own graphics settings.
How much storage should I leave for Minecraft on Switch 2?
Nintendo’s eShop lists the native download at 1.5 GB. Updates, Marketplace content and saved worlds require additional free space, so keeping more than the initial download size available avoids install failures.
Can Switch 2 use Minecraft Realms with a PC player?
Yes, when both accounts use Bedrock. A Switch 2 participant still needs Nintendo Switch Online for console online play, and the Realm host chooses the Bedrock or Java service; a Java Realm cannot accept the Switch 2 client.
Why can’t I enter a custom server address on Switch 2?
Console Bedrock does not provide the same arbitrary address-and-port entry available on PC and mobile. Switch 2 players generally use friends’ worlds, Realms or the featured-server list instead.
