Choose Java Edition if community-made mods and Java multiplayer communities are your priority. Choose Bedrock Edition if you want to play with friends across supported consoles, phones, tablets, and Windows devices. The key catch is compatibility: Java and Bedrock players generally cannot join each other’s worlds, Realms, LAN games, or servers. Before buying, check the host’s edition and every player’s device; on PC, Minecraft offers Java and Bedrock together in one product.
Which Minecraft edition should you choose?
The right edition is the one that matches what you want to do and the devices your group owns. For mod-focused play, Java has extensive support for community-made mods. For a group spread across supported consoles, mobile devices, and Windows, Bedrock makes cross-device multiplayer more convenient.

- Choose Java if you want to explore third-party mods or join a Java server community, and your group can play Java on Windows, Mac, or Linux.
- Choose Bedrock if your friends use a mix of supported Bedrock devices, or you want controller and touch support listed as Bedrock features by Minecraft.
- Check with the host first if you are buying Minecraft to join someone else. You need the same edition as the host, and multiplayer also requires the current release.
- Consider the PC bundle if you play on PC and expect to use both play styles. The official PC product includes both editions; it does not make them cross-compatible.
Both editions support multiplayer, but they use distinct multiplayer ecosystems. Java players connect to Java games; Bedrock players connect to Bedrock games. That difference matters more than a general claim that one edition is “better.”
A useful way to decide is to start with your group rather than a feature list. If your friends already have a world or server, the host’s edition is the practical answer. If you are starting a new group, choose the edition available to everyone and then consider whether mods, add-ons, or a particular device matter most. Someone who mainly plays alone may reasonably put customization or controls first; someone who wants a shared game should prioritize compatibility.

What is the difference between Java and Bedrock for mods?
Java is the stronger choice for traditional community-made mods. Bedrock has a separate customization system built around add-ons, resource packs, and behavior packs; those can change the game, but they are not interchangeable with Java mods.
Java mods are third-party projects
Minecraft’s support guidance describes Java mods as content available from third-party websites. Mojang does not create, review, or endorse those mods. They can alter a player’s experience extensively, but they also introduce risks: a mod may cause Minecraft to malfunction or become unplayable, and Minecraft Support does not troubleshoot problems caused by mod use.

Compatibility and reliability can depend on the particular mod and the game setup, so do not assume that a mod will work with every version, other mods, or a multiplayer server. For a player who wants the broad community-mod experience, those caveats are usually a trade-off rather than a reason to avoid Java. For someone who wants a supported, low-friction way to customize a shared game, Bedrock’s add-on route may be a better fit.
Before committing to a modded setup, check the instructions and requirements for the particular third-party project and the game version it supports. Do not assume that the same mod setup can be moved between editions or that a server accepts every mod a player wants to use. Because Mojang does not review or endorse Java mods, a project’s availability is not a promise of safety, reliability, or Minecraft Support assistance. If you prefer not to manage those uncertainties, vanilla play or Bedrock’s add-on system may better suit you.
Bedrock add-ons use packs
Bedrock add-ons consist of resource packs, behavior packs, or both. Resource packs can change textures, sounds, and other assets. Behavior packs can alter rules, entity functions, or game mechanics. Minecraft Help presents add-ons as easier to install than Java mods.
Minecraft Help says Bedrock add-ons work in single-player, multiplayer, and Realms. It also states that they are not supported on personal servers that are not Realms. That limitation matters if your plan is to customize a self-hosted Bedrock server: add-on support in a Realm does not mean the same packs work on every server arrangement.
Think about where you will use the pack before choosing it. A resource pack’s role is to change assets such as textures or sounds; a behavior pack can change rules, entity functions, or mechanics. The fact that both fall under the add-on umbrella does not mean they make the same kinds of changes. If the goal is a customized shared experience, also check whether the play context is single-player, multiplayer, a Realm, or a personal server, since official support differs by context.

Which customization route fits?
- Choose Java mods for community-created modifications and the Java mod ecosystem, while accepting third-party sourcing and the possibility of troubleshooting outside Minecraft Support.
- Choose Bedrock add-ons for resource or behavior changes through the Bedrock pack system, especially when you want the official help route to cover single-player, multiplayer, or Realms use.
- Do not treat the names as equivalent. Java mods and Bedrock add-ons have different systems, compatibility boundaries, and supported play contexts.
Neither choice means that all customization is identical or available everywhere. A Java mod is not a Bedrock add-on, and a Bedrock pack’s stated support for Realms does not extend to a personal non-Realms server. Match the customization tool to both the edition and the way you intend to play.
Can Java and Bedrock play together?
Not in ordinary Minecraft multiplayer. Players need to use the same edition to join a world, Realm, LAN game, or server: a Java host requires Java players, and a Bedrock host requires Bedrock players.
This is the most important purchase check for multiplayer. A Windows PC can run the PC versions of both editions, but owning both does not allow a Java player to join a Bedrock world or the reverse. A mixed-device friend group should first identify which edition the host uses and whether that edition is available on each player’s device.
Both editions have multiplayer, but the available communities and connection options differ. Java has third-party servers and community variations. Bedrock has featured servers and cross-play across supported Bedrock devices. These are separate ecosystems, not interchangeable server lists. A server or Realm being available for one edition does not establish availability for the other.
Minecraft’s multiplayer requirements also call for players to use the latest release. Edition matching alone is not enough: internet or LAN connectivity, account settings, and—in some cases—a platform subscription also affect whether a player can join.
When coordinating a group, ask each player which device they will use and whether they can access the same edition as the host. For Java, Minecraft lists Windows, Mac, and Linux; Java cross-play is among those platforms. Bedrock is the option for cross-play across supported Bedrock devices, including Windows, consoles, and mobile. “Cross-play” is therefore a useful shorthand, not a guarantee that any two devices can join any session: the players still need a supported platform, the matching edition, and the other multiplayer requirements.

The comparison reflects Minecraft’s official product and support descriptions. “Supported Bedrock devices” does not mean every device or every Bedrock platform combination is guaranteed to work together; check the current platform list and multiplayer requirements for your specific device.

Device choice can also affect comfort and convenience. Minecraft’s official comparison lists controller and touch support as Bedrock features, which may matter if you primarily play on a console or phone. That does not replace the edition check: the group still needs to use the same edition, and the particular device must support the game and multiplayer features you want.
What if you play on a PC?
PC buyers may have access to both Java and Bedrock in the official Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition for PC product. That is useful if you want to play Java with some friends and Bedrock with others, or try both customization systems. It is not a universal license for consoles or mobile devices: confirm the product listing and platform requirements before purchase.

For a PC household with different play styles, having both can provide flexibility: one session can use Java for a Java world or mod-oriented play, while another can use Bedrock to join a Bedrock group. It does not turn a single session into cross-play. Treat the bundle as access to two editions on PC, not as a compatibility upgrade or a promise that the product applies to a console or mobile purchase.
What do you need to play multiplayer?
Before launching a session, verify the edition, game version, connection, account access, and any platform-specific online-play requirement. Minecraft Help’s multiplayer requirements are the practical checklist; the exact steps can vary by device and account.
- Confirm the host’s edition. Ask whether the world, Realm, or server is Java or Bedrock, then use that same edition.
- Update to the latest release. Minecraft’s stated multiplayer requirements call for the latest release. If players cannot connect, check that everyone is running the current version before troubleshooting other settings.
- Check the connection. Multiplayer needs a stable internet connection or a LAN connection, depending on how the group is playing.
- Check the platform’s online-play requirement. Minecraft Help lists Xbox Game Pass Core for Xbox, PlayStation Plus for PlayStation, and Nintendo Switch Online for Nintendo Switch console multiplayer. The reviewed source does not provide current subscription prices.
- Check account access. Console or mobile play may require a Microsoft account. The account requirement can depend on the device and play situation.
- Review child-account permissions. If a child account cannot join multiplayer, verify that its multiplayer permissions are enabled.
These checks separate common causes that are easy to confuse. A subscription does not fix an edition mismatch, and updating the game does not override account permissions. Work through the host’s edition and the players’ requirements before assuming a server or game is broken.

If console players are involved, check their platform’s online-play subscription; if a console or mobile player is involved, check whether a Microsoft account is needed. For a child account, verify multiplayer permissions. This sequence avoids spending time on account or connection settings when the basic problem is that one player launched the other edition.
Subscription pricing is not one-size-fits-all, and the official multiplayer requirements identify the relevant console services rather than giving a price. Check the current terms and cost with the applicable platform provider before budgeting. Do not assume that buying Minecraft alone covers a separate console online-play requirement.

How should you choose between Java and Bedrock Realms?
Realms are edition-specific, so the same compatibility rule applies: join a Realm using the matching edition. Minecraft’s comparison page describes Java Realms and Bedrock Realms Plus as separate services, rather than one Realm shared between editions.

That comparison page was published on October 25, 2021, and some platform or subscription details on it may be dated. Use current Minecraft information for present-day subscription details, pricing, and included content. No current Realm price or plan feature should be inferred from that older comparison alone.
For a player choosing a Realm to play with friends, first establish which edition the group uses. A Java Realm is not a route for Bedrock friends to join, and a Bedrock Realm is not a shared service for Java players. If add-ons are part of a Bedrock Realm plan, Minecraft Help says Bedrock add-ons work in Realms; that should not be generalized to personal non-Realms servers. Check current official Realms information for plan costs and inclusions because those can change.

Can I use the same Minecraft world in Java and Bedrock?
