GLFW 65542 and 65543 are usually Windows graphics-driver failures, not Minecraft world or Java errors. Minecraft Java Edition is unable to create a usable OpenGL context through the display adapter that Windows has selected. The reliable fix is to identify that adapter, replace a generic or broken driver with the correct Intel, AMD, NVIDIA, or computer-maker package, restart Windows, and test an unmodified current release. If the message started immediately after a driver update, rolling that driver back is the appropriate alternative. This guide shows the diagnostic order, explains what each result means, and identifies when the limitation is the hardware or Windows support rather than Minecraft itself.
What do GLFW 65542 and 65543 mean in Minecraft?
GLFW 65542 displays “WGL: The Driver does not appear to support OpenGL.” GLFW 65543 is recorded in Mojang’s launcher tracker with the same Windows OpenGL-driver wording. In both cases, the launcher reached Windows graphics initialization but could not obtain an OpenGL context that Java Edition can use.

- Capture whether the dialog says 65542 or 65543, and keep the complete WGL/OpenGL sentence.
- Note your Windows edition and whether you are running Java Edition through the official Minecraft Launcher.
- Record every entry under Display adapters; a hybrid system may list an integrated adapter and a separate graphics card.
- Write down whether Minecraft worked previously and whether the failure followed a Windows or display-driver update.
- Do not remove a driver or delete files until you know which adapter Windows is using.
How do I identify the active graphics adapter?
Device Manager gives the authoritative adapter names Windows is currently managing, while DirectX Diagnostic Tool provides a second view of each display device.
Use Device Manager
- Press
Windows, typeDevice Manager, and open it. - Expand Display adapters.
- Record the complete name of every adapter, including any warning icon or error status.
- Open an adapter’s Properties, select the Driver tab, and note the provider, date, and version.
Confirm with DirectX Diagnostic Tool
- Press
Windows+R, enterdxdiag.exe, and pressEnter. - Inspect each Display tab. Record the device name, manufacturer, driver model, and driver date.
- Save the report only if you need to give the information to the computer maker or support team; it is not a substitute for installing the correct driver.
What does “Microsoft Basic Display Adapter” tell me?
That name means Windows is using its generic display driver instead of a manufacturer-specific Intel, AMD, NVIDIA, or computer-maker driver. The generic adapter can provide a picture while lacking the OpenGL support Minecraft needs. Microsoft recommends updating it to the manufacturer-specific display-adapter driver.

How do I install the correct Windows graphics driver?
Use Windows Update first, then the computer maker or GPU manufacturer when Windows has no suitable package. Match the exact adapter model and Windows architecture; a driver for a similar-looking card can leave the same error or create a new display problem.
Check optional display drivers in Windows Update
- Open Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Advanced options, then Optional updates.
- Expand the driver section and select the display-driver package that matches your adapter.
- Choose Download and install.
- Restart Windows after installation, even if Windows does not explicitly request a restart.
Optional drivers are not installed automatically. If this section is empty, that does not prove your existing driver is correct; it means Windows Update has no optional package available for that system at that moment.
Use the computer maker’s package when available
For a laptop or a branded desktop, check the support page for the exact model and Windows version before using a generic GPU package. The maker may include firmware, power-management, or switchable-graphics components that a reference driver does not provide. Install the display package, restart, and check Device Manager again for the expected adapter name.

Use Intel, AMD, or NVIDIA for a self-built system
If the computer maker supplies no current package, obtain the driver for the exact GPU from its manufacturer. Minecraft Help specifically directs Java Edition players to current AMD, NVIDIA, or Intel drivers. Choose the package for your Windows release and system architecture, close Minecraft and other graphics-intensive applications, run the installer, and restart when it completes.
Let Device Manager search automatically
- In Device Manager > Display adapters, right-click the adapter.
- Choose Update driver, then Search automatically for drivers.
- If Windows reports that the best driver is already installed, still check the computer maker or GPU manufacturer because the catalog may not contain the newest or most suitable package.
What should I test after installing a driver?
Restart first, then test a clean current Java Edition release through the official Minecraft Launcher. A clean test separates a driver-context failure from a mod, shader, or third-party-launcher problem.
- Restart Windows and wait for the desktop to finish loading.
- Open the official Minecraft Launcher and select the current Java Edition release.
- Launch without mods, shader loaders, custom clients, or third-party launchers.
- Join a test world or reach the title screen. Record whether the same GLFW number and WGL wording return.
- If the clean release works, close Minecraft and re-enable modifications one at a time so the component that reintroduces the failure can be identified.
Minecraft’s troubleshooting guidance includes updating the operating system and drivers and disabling mods while isolating video and graphics faults. Do not treat a successful launch with one modified profile as proof that every profile is healthy.
Should I roll back the display driver?
Yes, when Minecraft worked until a display-driver update. Rollback restores the previous driver package and is the official branch for a display problem that follows an update.
- Open Device Manager and expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the affected adapter and choose Properties.
- Open the Driver tab and select Roll Back Driver.
- Choose a reason when Windows asks, confirm the rollback, and restart.
- Test the clean current Minecraft release again.
The button can be unavailable when Windows has no previous package retained. In that case, reinstall the display driver using the computer maker’s or GPU manufacturer’s package rather than forcing an unrelated older file.

Which remedy fits the symptoms?
The adapter name, timing, and computer type determine the safest next move. Use this comparison before escalating to hardware.

Can Windows version or hardware make the error unavoidable?
Sometimes the driver is not the only boundary. Minecraft Help states that, as of March 2025, Windows 10 or later is required for online play and continued Launcher updates. Check the current Java Edition system requirements before buying hardware or troubleshooting an unsupported installation.
Microsoft documents a final hardware branch for systems where the manufacturer supplies no Windows driver and Windows Update has none: continue using the generic adapter or upgrade to a video card that has Windows display-adapter drivers. That is a conditional option, not a guarantee that any new card will run Minecraft.
Desktop replacement checks
- Confirm the new card has a compatible PCI Express slot and that the motherboard firmware supports it.
- Check the power supply’s wattage, available PCIe power connectors, and recommended capacity.
- Measure case clearance for card length, height, and slot thickness.
- Verify that the card has a Windows driver for your Windows release and architecture.
- Plan for monitor connectors and remove the old driver only according to the new card maker’s instructions.
Laptop boundaries
Laptop graphics are usually soldered or otherwise non-replaceable. Check the manufacturer’s service documentation before considering a purchase; an external or desktop card is not a general replacement for an internal laptop adapter. If no compatible driver exists for the built-in GPU, the practical choices may be a supported Windows installation, the generic adapter, or a different computer.

What fixes should I avoid?
Do not download a random opengl32.dll from a DLL site and copy it into the Minecraft, Java, or Windows folders. That file is not a replacement for a signed, hardware-specific display driver, and an incorrect DLL can introduce security, loading, or application-compatibility problems.

Also avoid disabling the adapter merely to make the warning disappear, installing a driver for a similar GPU, or repeatedly changing Java memory settings. The official troubleshooting path is operating-system and driver updates, Device Manager repair, rollback after a regression, and checking hardware requirements.
What if the error returns after a successful launch?
A returning error usually means Windows selected a different adapter or a later software change replaced the working package. Compare the current Device Manager names and driver dates with the records you made before troubleshooting.
- If the adapter has reverted to Microsoft Basic Display Adapter, reinstall the manufacturer package and restart.
- If Windows installed a newer driver just before the failure, use rollback while you obtain a supported replacement.
