Yes. Minecraft Dungeons II supports online co-op, cross-play between its supported platforms, couch co-op, and mixed sessions where players on one device team up with friends online. A party can contain up to four players total. You can form a group with an eight-character party code or use matchmaking, and the sequel uses dedicated servers rather than making one player’s device host the session. Console online play may require a platform subscription, so the exact requirement depends on where you play.
Is there co-op in Minecraft Dungeons II?
Yes. The game can be played solo, locally on one device, online with remote friends, or in a mixed group that combines local and remote players. Minecraft’s official overview describes both cross-play and mixed co-op, while the launch announcement confirms that the campaign supports one player or a full party of four.
The release date announced by Minecraft is September 29, 2026. The official overview lists Windows, Steam, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2 as supported platforms. Availability can still vary by edition and storefront, so check the listing for your specific platform before buying.
How many players can join a party?
The published limit is four players total: one player plus up to three others. That is a limit for the entire party, not a separate allowance for each console or computer.
#1 Best Overall
- Drop the pickaxe, grab a sword, and charge into a thrilling new adventure in the Minecraft Dungeons II Deluxe Edition
- Solo: one person plays alone.
- Couch co-op: players share one device, and Minecraft says this works in both online and offline modes.
- Online co-op: remote players join over the internet through cross-play.
- Mixed co-op: two or more people can share a device while additional party members connect remotely.
This makes the mixed option useful for a household with two people on one screen and friends elsewhere. The local players occupy the same session as the remote players rather than creating separate groups.
Can local and online players play together?
Yes. Mixed co-op lets a local couch group take part in an online party, so everyone does not need an individual console or computer. Minecraft presents this as a major change from the first Dungeons, whose couch co-op was offline-only.
When mixed co-op is useful
- Two players are using one television and a third or fourth friend is at home elsewhere.
- A family wants to play locally while inviting someone online.
- A local session needs an open slot filled through matchmaking.
If all players are in the same room, couch co-op can be used offline. Remote participants require an online session and whatever online-service subscription their platform demands.

Yes. Cross-play is supported across the platforms named in Minecraft’s official materials. The game is designed so that a friend can join by party code regardless of which supported platform each person is using.
| Platform | Online cross-play support | Important note |
|---|---|---|
| Windows | Supported | Included in Minecraft’s official platform list. |
| Steam | Supported | Included in Minecraft’s official platform list. |

How do you get everyone into the same party?
The most direct method is an eight-character party code. Minecraft’s co-op deep dive says the code uses letters and numbers, is unique to the current party, and can be entered through the game’s “join by party code” dialog.
- Have one player create or open the party. The host shares the code shown for that current party.
- Open the lobby’s join-by-party-code dialog. Each friend enters the eight-character code exactly as displayed.
- Confirm the join. The code works across supported platforms, so players do not need to match the host’s hardware.
- Use matchmaking for open places. Instead of inviting a named friend, look for other players or allow the system to fill remaining party slots.
Minecraft says a code can bring friends into the lobby or into an ongoing game. If a code does not work, recheck every letter and number, make sure it belongs to the current party, and confirm that everyone is using a supported platform and an online session.
How does matchmaking choose players?
Matchmaking is more selective than simply placing random users together. The official co-op article says it considers core quest progress, region, and power level when looking for a suitable session.
- Core quest progress: helps place players at a compatible point in the adventure.
- Region: helps account for geographic connection conditions.
- Power level: helps avoid a party whose difficulty is a poor fit for one member.
The system can also place a player into a session that is already underway. That is useful when you want to fill an open slot rather than wait for a brand-new party to form.
Which platforms support Minecraft Dungeons II online play?
Minecraft lists Windows, Steam, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2. Cross-play is described across this supported platform group, but store editions and regional availability should be checked separately.

Do you need an online subscription for co-op?
For console online co-op, Minecraft says a platform-specific online subscription is required and sold separately. The requirement is not identical across every platform, so do not assume that a subscription named for one console applies to another.
PlayStation 5
The PlayStation store page specifically states that PS Plus is required for online play and lists support for up to four online players. See the official PlayStation listing for the current requirement.
Other consoles
Minecraft’s announcement does not name a single universal subscription for Xbox or Nintendo systems. Check the current online-multiplayer terms for the account and platform you use. A local offline couch session does not use online multiplayer; adding remote players changes it to an online session.
Does progression carry across platforms?
Hero data is stored online. The developer article says that linking your platform accounts to the same Microsoft account lets you continue with the same hero on another platform, provided that platform supports the feature.

That qualification matters: account linking does not establish universal transfer behavior for every possible device or edition. Use the same Microsoft account on the supported platforms you intend to switch between, and verify support for the particular platform before relying on cross-device progression.
How do the dedicated servers affect co-op?
Minecraft Dungeons II uses dedicated servers and chooses a server for the party based on each player’s ping. In the official co-op article, Technical Director Stefan Annell explains that the goal is to avoid making one player’s internet connection or hardware the bottleneck for everyone else.
“With Dungeons II, we’ve moved to dedicated servers, and the game also chooses the best server for the party based on each player’s ping,” Annell says in Minecraft’s September 29, 2026 co-op deep dive.
This is a description of the game’s network design, not an independent latency test. A dedicated server can remove the old host-device dependency, while the quality each player experiences still depends on their own connection to the selected server.
Which co-op setup should you choose?
Choose the mode that matches where the players are and whether the session needs an internet connection.

| Situation | Best choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Everyone is in the same room and no remote friend is joining | Offline couch co-op | Players share one device without creating an online party. |
| Everyone is remote | Online cross-play | Each person joins from a supported platform. |
| Some players share a device and others are remote | Mixed co-op | Local and online members occupy the same party. |
| You want open slots filled | Matchmaking | The system searches by progress, region, and power level. |
| You already know the people joining | Party code or friend invite | An eight-character code sends friends directly to the current party. |
What can prevent someone from joining?
Most failures come from the platform, account, or session rather than from the four-player design itself. Check these points in order:
- Unsupported hardware: confirm that every player is on one of the six platforms in Minecraft’s published list.
- Online-service access: on consoles, verify the required subscription; on PS5, the store listing explicitly requires PS Plus.
- Stale party code: codes identify the current party, so request a newly displayed code if the host has left or recreated the session.
- Typing errors: enter all eight letters and numbers exactly; confusing a letter with a number is enough to fail.
- Matchmaking mismatch: different quest progress, regions, or power levels can affect which sessions appear.
- Progression expectations: use the same Microsoft account for cross-platform hero access, and remember that transfer remains subject to platform support.
What is the practical answer for a group of friends?
If your group uses supported platforms, Minecraft Dungeons II is built for shared play: create a party, distribute the eight-character code, and let remote friends join through cross-play. A local pair can remain on one device while online members join the same party, and matchmaking can fill any remaining place. Plan for the relevant console subscription and use one Microsoft account when you need the same hero on more than one supported platform.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a friend join after the dungeon has already started?
Yes. Minecraft’s co-op description says the party code can bring someone into the lobby or an ongoing game. The friend still needs access to the supported platform and online service used by that session.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Does “one-click cross-play” mean I have to configure a router or dedicated host?
No special player-host setup is described. Minecraft’s technical director uses the phrase to describe a design in which cross-play should work from the first launch, while the game handles the dedicated-server selection.
Will dedicated servers guarantee that every player has a lag-free session?
No guarantee is stated. The system selects a server using the party’s player pings and removes the old single-host dependency, but each connection can still vary in quality.
What should I verify before buying for a group?
Check that each person’s exact platform and edition appears in Minecraft’s supported list, then check that platform’s current online-multiplayer subscription rules. Store format and regional availability are separate from the game’s cross-play features.
