It animates the pictured face with speech-synchronized mouth movements, facial expressions and head motion. The project is a research system—not a publicly available Microsoft app or service.
What VASA-1 does
VASA-1 takes two inputs: a static image of a face and speech audio. The image provides the visible identity; the audio drives the generated speech-related movement. Microsoft Research describes the result as a video with synchronized lip motion, facial nuances and natural head movement. These are the researchers’ stated capabilities, not a guarantee that every output looks authentic or is indistinguishable from recorded footage.
The method is described in the paper as a holistic facial-dynamics and head-movement generation model operating in a face latent space. In practical terms, it generates coordinated facial and head motion rather than simply moving the mouth. That does not mean the system understands the person in the image or the words being spoken. Microsoft Research’s VASA-1 page describes the system and its inputs.
What the performance figures mean
The VASA-1 paper reports online generation at up to 40 frames per second for 512×512-pixel output. Those figures describe the researchers’ reported system performance; they are not specifications for a consumer product or evidence that the public can use the model. Can you try VASA-1?
No public demo or product is announced on the project page. The VASA-1 team says it has no plans to release an online demo, API, product, additional implementation details or related offerings until it is confident the technology will be used responsibly and in accordance with proper regulations. That describes the team’s stated position; it does not establish that the status can never change.
As a result, VASA-1 should be understood as a research project, not a downloadable tool, subscription service or API that readers can access. The team’s release statement and responsible-use framing are on the VASA-1 project page.

Why lifelike talking-face generation raises questions
A system that makes a still face appear to speak can have useful applications. The paper discusses possibilities including richer digital communication, accessibility for people with communication impairments, interactive education, and therapeutic or social support. These are potential directions, not demonstrated outcomes from a deployed service.
The same capability makes context and responsible use important: a generated video can depict someone appearing to say words they did not record. The project team explicitly ties its release plans to responsible use and proper regulation. The available sources do not establish a measured rate of misuse or harm, nor do the reported frame rate and resolution show that viewers cannot detect generated video. The NeurIPS paper discusses potential applications, while Microsoft Research’s project page explains the team’s release stance.
