Microsoft’s Xbox division reportedly faced a 30% profit-margin goal, and Bloomberg reported that pressure to meet it was tied to price increases, product cancellations and thousands of job cuts. The account relies on unnamed people familiar with the business; it does not establish that the goal was the sole cause of each decision.

What Bloomberg reported about Xbox’s margin target

On October 23, 2025, Bloomberg reporters Jason Schreier and Dina Bass reported that Microsoft executives had set an across-the-board 30% target for Xbox gaming division “accountability margins.” Bloomberg described that as Microsoft’s term for profit margins and attributed the information to people familiar with the business who spoke anonymously. Read Bloomberg’s report.

Bloomberg connected the target with the division’s response: product cancellations, price increases and thousands of job cuts. That is an attributed account of the relationship, not confirmation that a single margin goal caused every action or that Xbox reached the goal.

How the reported target compares with historical margins

MobileSyrup’s summary of Bloomberg’s reporting put the wider game industry’s margins at 17% to 22% over recent years, and Xbox’s margin at 10% to 20% over the six years before Bloomberg’s October 2025 article. It also cited court documents for a 12% profit margin for Microsoft’s gaming business during the first nine months of fiscal 2022. MobileSyrup’s account of the margin figures.

Which Xbox prices changed, and when

Price changes are part of the reported response, but they span different products and dates. MobileSyrup reported on May 1, 2025, that Xbox increased prices for console hardware, controllers and games. Its October 1, 2025, report covered a separate increase to Game Pass Ultimate in Canada. These are dated reports, not current price quotes; the subscription change should not be confused with physical console pricing. What the report does—and does not—establish

  • Reported: Microsoft executives set a 30% accountability-margin goal for Xbox, according to Bloomberg’s anonymous sources.
  • Reported connection: Bloomberg said Xbox’s response included cancellations, price increases and thousands of job cuts.
  • Not established: That the division attained 30%, that the target alone drove each decision, or that the historical margin figures describe Xbox’s current performance.
  • Not established in the cited coverage: A public, on-record Microsoft or Xbox confirmation of the target.

Accordingly, the most accurate answer to why Xbox raised prices and cut jobs is that Bloomberg reported these moves as part of Xbox’s response to pressure to meet a high margin target—not that the target is a confirmed, exclusive explanation for every decision.
