Microsoft released its May 14, 2024 monthly security and quality updates as version-specific packages. For the main Windows 11 and Windows 10 releases, the relevant updates were KB5037771 for Windows 11 versions 23H2 and 22H2, KB5037770 for Windows 11 version 21H2, and KB5037768 for Windows 10 version 22H2. Check your Windows version before choosing a KB; these identifiers are not interchangeable.
Find the May 14 update for your Windows version
Use the product and version—not just the KB number—to identify the matching release. Microsoft’s release information lists these May 14, 2024 packages and resulting builds:

Microsoft’s Windows 10 release information and Windows Server release information provide the release listings for those products. KB5037763 was removed from the Microsoft Update Catalog and other release channels as of March 31, 2026, so it should not be treated as a currently downloadable package; see Microsoft’s expired-update notice.
What KB5037771 changed in Windows 11
Microsoft highlighted a fix for a VPN connection problem that could occur after installing the April 9, 2024 update or a later update. The Windows 11 release notes also document several fixes for version 22H2:

- Addressed failures in Virtual Secure Mode scenarios, including VPN, Windows Hello, Credential Guard, and Key Guard.
- Fixed an SMB client issue that could prevent SMB Multichannel connections after the April 23, 2024 update. The issue was associated with slow file transfers and Event ID 30826 in the Microsoft-Windows-SMBClient/Connectivity log.
Windows 11 version 23H2 includes the 22H2 improvements; Microsoft listed no additional issues for the 23H2 release. See the KB5037771 release notes for the version-specific details.
Known issues recorded for KB5037771
Profile-picture changes could fail
Microsoft documented that some users could not change their account profile picture. The documented path was Start > Settings > Accounts > Your info; choosing a file could return error 0x80070520. Microsoft’s support page says a later update, KB5037853, addressed this issue on May 29, 2024.

Enterprise subscription upgrade issue
The current support notes also describe an enterprise issue when upgrading from Windows Pro to an Enterprise subscription, later addressed by KB5040527. These are subsequent updates to the support-page notes, not additional fixes included in the May 14 package itself.
How to install the May Windows 11 update
For KB5037771, Microsoft lists Windows Update, Windows Update for Business, Microsoft Update Catalog, and Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) as distribution routes. The exact route depends on whether the device is managed by an organization.

- Microsoft Update Catalog: Download the standalone package that matches the Windows version and architecture.
- WSUS: Synchronize the Windows 11 product and the Security Updates classification, then approve the applicable update for deployment.
KB5037771 combines the latest servicing stack update (SSU) with the latest cumulative update (LCU). The SSU cannot be removed after installation. Microsoft says removal of the LCU uses DISM with the Remove-Package option; WUSA’s uninstall switch does not work for this combined package.
