Microsoft has added natural-language search for files and settings on Copilot+ PCs. You can describe what you want instead of remembering an exact filename or settings label. That is a real improvement, but Microsoft’s documentation does not show that Windows Search is universally fixed, faster, or more accurate for every user. And the feature is AI-assisted search, not a chatbot replacing Windows Search.
What changed in Windows Search?
Improved Windows Search uses semantic indexing alongside traditional indexing. It can match a description of a file or a plain-language request for a setting, rather than relying only on exact words. Microsoft’s Windows team put it this way: “You no longer need to remember file names, exact words in file content, or settings names.”
For example, you could search for “find images of bridges at sunset on my PC” or describe a document’s contents. Microsoft also gives examples of searching for settings in your own words, such as wanting a darker screen or needing to connect a device. Search is available through File Explorer, the taskbar’s Search box, and Settings on supported Copilot+ PCs. Microsoft’s Windows guidance explains the feature and its examples.
Is Windows Search now a chatbot?
Not in the usual conversational sense. The built-in Windows Search experience can interpret descriptions and return results, but Microsoft documents it as AI-assisted search—not as a chat interface replacing the taskbar, File Explorer, and Settings search.

There is also a distinct file-search feature in the Copilot on Windows app. In an August 2025 announcement, Microsoft described semantic search in that app as a way to find and open files and ask questions about them, with configurable permissions for Copilot access. That app experience should not be confused with improved Windows Search. Microsoft’s announcement covers the Copilot app feature.
Which PCs can use improved Windows Search?
Microsoft’s support documentation lists Copilot+ PCs powered by Snapdragon, AMD, and Intel processors. This is not a feature documented for every Windows 11 computer. Availability can vary by device and market, and update timing can vary. The original January 2025 Insider preview began on Snapdragon-powered Copilot+ PCs; Microsoft’s later support information describes broader processor support. Microsoft’s current update information is the place to check for the latest supported devices and rollout details.

Microsoft’s Windows product page is U.S.-oriented and notes that features and availability vary by region. It also says improved Search is optimized for simplified Chinese, English, French, German, Japanese, and Spanish. Microsoft does not promise identical availability or results for every language or market.
What can it search, and what affects the results?
Microsoft lists these supported document formats: .txt, .pdf, .docx, .doc, .rtf, .pptx, .ppt, .xls, and .xlsx. For images, it lists .jpg/.jpeg, .png, .gif, .bmp, and .ico. Its current support information says cloud-stored photos and files can appear alongside local results, although the original preview focused on local files in indexed locations.

Whether a result appears depends on practical details, including whether the relevant location is indexed, whether the file type and language are supported, and whether the feature has reached your device and region. Microsoft provides no guarantee that every described file or setting will be found.
How to manage indexing
- Open Settings > Privacy & security > Searching Windows.
- Review the indexed locations. Turn on Enhanced if you want Windows to index the entire PC; otherwise, manage the locations included in indexing.
- Keep the Copilot+ PC plugged in while initial indexing completes, as Microsoft recommends. The company does not specify a fixed completion time.
For setup details and supported content, see Microsoft’s improved Search guidance. The original January 2025 Insider preview announcement describes the feature’s initial rollout and scope.

Does this prove Microsoft fixed Windows Search?
No. Semantic search addresses a recognizable limitation: users may remember what a file contains without knowing its name or the exact words inside it. Microsoft documents a meaningful capability addition, but the cited sources do not establish a universal fix or provide independent search-quality testing or an official comparative benchmark for speed and accuracy.
Microsoft also says Copilot+ PCs have an NPU capable of more than 40 trillion operations per second. That is a hardware capability claim, not a measured Windows Search speed or accuracy result, so it should not be read as proof that searches are faster.

Should you buy a Copilot+ PC for this feature?
Only if improved natural-language search is important enough to you to factor into a broader PC decision. Ordinary Windows Search does not require a Copilot+ PC, and Microsoft’s published information does not establish that buying compatible hardware is worthwhile for everyone. Before buying, confirm the specific computer is a Copilot+ PC and check its current specifications, your region’s availability, and the feature’s rollout status.
