Microsoft disclosed CVE-2022-28799 on August 31, 2022: a high-severity vulnerability in TikTok’s Android app that could have let an attacker compromise an account after a user tapped a specially crafted link. The attack depended on a chain of app weaknesses, not simply any link click. Microsoft said TikTok had fixed the flaw and that it had found no evidence of exploitation in the wild when it published its report.
What was CVE-2022-28799?
Microsoft described the issue as a flaw in how TikTok’s Android app handled certain deeplinks and content displayed in an in-app browser, or WebView. The vulnerability was assigned CVE-2022-28799 and received a CVSS score of 8.3, as reported by Microsoft in 2022. Microsoft said it notified TikTok in February 2022 through coordinated vulnerability disclosure; the fix was included in an app update released less than a month after that initial disclosure. Microsoft’s disclosure explains the technical chain and its reported impact.
The issue affected two TikTok Android app variants, according to Microsoft:
| Package name | Regional use reported by Microsoft |
|---|---|
com.ss.android.ugc.trill |
East and Southeast Asia |
com.zhiliaoapp.musically |
Other countries |
Microsoft reported that the two variants had more than 1.5 billion combined Google Play installations at the time. That is a 2022 installation figure, not a current count of users or installs. Microsoft Threat Intelligence provides the historical figure and CVSS score.

How could the attack work?
Android WebView lets an app display web content without leaving the app. Apps may also expose JavaScript interfaces—bridges through which scripts in a WebView can call functions supplied by the app. Microsoft’s analysis found that a chain of weaknesses in TikTok’s deeplink handling could be used to load an arbitrary URL in the app’s WebView and bypass a server-side host check by adding deeplink parameters. The loaded page could then reach the WebView’s JavaScript bridge. Microsoft’s technical analysis describes the deeplink and WebView behavior.
Microsoft said it found more than 70 methods exposed through that bridge. Some could access or change private information, while others could make authenticated requests. Its proof of concept demonstrated obtaining authentication tokens and changing profile information. The reported potential impact included access to private videos and messages, and the ability to upload videos on a user’s behalf. These were capabilities in a demonstrated vulnerability scenario; Microsoft did not say that users were broadly being attacked this way.

Did a single tap automatically compromise an account?
No. “One-click” describes the user interaction in the reported attack scenario: a target had to tap a specially crafted link. The compromise depended on the additional deeplink, WebView, and JavaScript-bridge weaknesses working together. Microsoft’s report does not establish that an ordinary link, or every link sent to a TikTok user, could take over an account.
Is TikTok’s Android vulnerability patched?
Microsoft said TikTok fixed CVE-2022-28799 in an app update released after the company’s February 2022 notification. It also said it had found no evidence of exploitation in the wild when its disclosure was published on August 31, 2022. The report does not establish the patch status of a particular device’s installed app build today.

The weakness illustrates why apps should treat links and WebView content as security boundaries rather than trusting a URL because it arrived through an expected-looking deeplink. Microsoft recommended that developers:
