On November 12, 2014, at its Connect(); event, Microsoft announced that it would open-source the full server-side .NET stack and make that stack cross-platform for Windows, Mac, and Linux. Separately, Microsoft said Visual Studio 2015 Preview supported development for iOS, Android, and Windows. Those were connected changes in Microsoft’s developer strategy, but they were not the same promise: iOS and Android appeared in the Visual Studio tooling announcement, not the server-side .NET portability claim.

What Microsoft announced on November 12, 2014

Microsoft’s Connect(); announcement brought together two moves: opening key server-side .NET components to the community and broadening the platforms developers could target with Microsoft’s tools. The company described the first as a cross-platform .NET effort and introduced Visual Studio 2015 Preview for building applications targeting iOS, Android, and Windows. Microsoft’s November 12, 2014 announcement gives the scope of each claim.

The server-side .NET stack

Microsoft said it would provide the full server-side .NET stack as open source. Its release specifically named ASP.NET, the .NET compiler, and the .NET Core runtime, framework, and libraries. It said developers would be able to build with .NET across Windows, Mac, and Linux. This was an announcement about those .NET components and their cross-platform direction—not a claim that every Microsoft product or every part of .NET would work identically on every operating system.

Visual Studio and mobile targets

The same release presented Visual Studio 2015 Preview as a development environment supporting applications for iOS, Android, and Windows. That describes the targets available through the development tooling; it does not mean that the newly open-sourced server runtime itself became the universal way to build every native mobile app.

Yojaro 4Pack Silicone Suction Phone Case Mount, Silicon Adhesive Smartphones Stand Sticky, Hands-Free Phone Accessories Holder for Selfies and Videos (Black & White & Translucent & Light Pink)
  • 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
  • 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
  • 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
  • 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

What “open source” meant for .NET Core

In a separate post on November 12, .NET program manager Immo Landwerth announced that .NET Core would be open source, including its runtime and framework libraries. He described the goals as laying a foundation for cross-platform .NET and strengthening the ecosystem. Landwerth’s announcement focused on .NET Core specifically, while Microsoft’s press release situated those components within the broader server-side stack.

Open-sourcing these components meant making their source available for community participation. It did not erase the distinction between .NET Core and the older .NET Framework, nor did the announcement establish that all .NET components had the same portability or support status.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

.NET Core and .NET Framework were not synonyms

In a December 4, 2014 follow-up, Landwerth described .NET Core as a modular implementation and explained how it related to the older .NET Framework. Microsoft’s aim was a shared code base that could be used across Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X. Some components still required platform-specific implementations; file-system support was one example. The .NET Core introduction is useful context for why “cross-platform” did not mean every underlying implementation was identical.

The distinction matters when reading the announcement historically: .NET Core was the modular foundation Microsoft was positioning for cross-platform use, while .NET Framework was the older framework it was explaining the relationship to. Treating the names as interchangeable obscures what Microsoft was changing.

How to read the iOS, Android, and Linux wording

Part of the announcement Platforms named What Microsoft was saying
Server-side .NET stack Windows, Mac, and Linux Microsoft said developers could build with the open-source server-side stack across these platforms.
Visual Studio 2015 Preview iOS, Android, and Windows Microsoft described the preview as supporting development for applications targeting these operating systems.

This separation resolves the title’s shorthand. Linux belonged to the 2014 cross-platform .NET stack claim; iOS and Android belonged to the Visual Studio development-support claim. The release did not present those as one identical capability.

Where .NET stands now

Microsoft’s current .NET overview describes .NET as a free, cross-platform developer platform, and its introduction to .NET says .NET apps can run on Android, iOS, Linux, macOS, and Windows. This is current, high-level context—not a version-specific compatibility guarantee, and not a list of capabilities that should be retroactively attributed to the 2014 announcement.
