Microsoft said it had rerouted traffic through alternate paths; the warning did not describe a complete Azure outage.
What Microsoft warned about
In an alert quoted by ITPro on 8 September 2025, Microsoft said traffic was not interrupted because it had been rerouted through alternate network paths. It expected higher latency on some traffic that had previously traversed the Middle East, while traffic that did not use routes through the region was not affected.
In practical terms, some users could have experienced slower responses or delays on affected connections, rather than a loss of connectivity across Azure. The available report does not establish which Azure services or individual network paths were involved, how long the warning lasted, or the size of any latency increase.
What caused the reported slowdown
ITPro attributed the warning to undersea cable damage in the Red Sea and Microsoft’s rerouting of traffic. The report does not identify the cable systems or operators, and the precise route changes are not established. The cause should therefore be understood at the level reported: damage to undersea cables prompted alternate routing, with higher latency expected on some traffic using routes through the Middle East.

Which locations were mentioned
ITPro specifically named India and Pakistan among the countries that could be affected. That geographic detail comes from the news report; the Microsoft alert text reproduced by ITPro describes affected traffic by its route through the Middle East rather than by listing countries.
ITPro also quoted Pakistan Telecommunication Company as warning that internet users in Pakistan might experience service degradation during peak hours. The company said its international partners were working to resolve the issue and local teams were arranging alternative bandwidth. This is a separate statement about internet service in Pakistan, not a quantified measure of Azure impact.

How to check Azure health now
The September 2025 warning is historical and cannot show whether Azure is healthy today. Microsoft uses two different channels for status information:
- Azure Status: Microsoft’s public page for incidents that meet its broad-impact criteria.
- Azure Service Health: personalized information about service issues, planned maintenance, and advisories relevant to a customer’s resources. Microsoft says most issue communications are targeted to affected customers and partners through Service Health.
For a problem affecting a particular deployment, check Service Health for relevant advisories and maintenance notices; use the public status page to review broader incidents. Microsoft also allows Service Health notifications through channels such as email, SMS, push notifications, and webhooks, depending on configured settings. These alerts help teams learn about relevant issues; they do not prevent service disruptions.
