The company says it is updating the experience and incorporating feedback, but it has not identified the specific feedback or given a date for the feature’s return. The announcement does not show that Windows users broadly reject Copilot.
What changed on the Windows 11 taskbar?
Microsoft’s Copilot on Windows release notes say version 152.0.4191.25 began rolling out to Windows Insiders on August 14, 2026. The update previews changes to the Copilot app that may affect the taskbar icon, visuals, navigation, and feature availability. As part of that work, Microsoft said it was temporarily disabling Ask Copilot on the taskbar.
Microsoft’s stated reason was: “As we implement these changes, we’re temporarily disabling Ask Copilot on the taskbar to update the new experience and incorporate your feedback.” The statement appears in Microsoft’s Copilot on Windows release notes; it is not attributed to a named individual.
When will Ask Copilot return to the taskbar?
Microsoft has not announced a return date in the cited release notes. The notice describes the change as temporary, but does not say when the preview will end or when Ask Copilot will be restored. Windows Central’s August 18, 2026 report also noted that Microsoft had not specified what feedback it was responding to: Windows Central’s report.

Does this affect every Windows 11 user?
The announcement concerns a Windows Insider preview rollout, not a documented permanent removal for all Windows 11 users. Microsoft says availability can vary during the preview. Its release notes provide no user count or geographic breakdown, so they do not establish how many people are affected or whether the change applies to a particular user’s installation.
What other Copilot features may be unavailable?
Microsoft’s August 14 preview note warns that Notebooks, Connectors, and Vision will be temporarily unavailable for some users. The notice does not say that those features are unavailable to everyone.

Does “Nobody wants Copilot” reflect what Microsoft found?
No such conclusion is established by the cited sources. Microsoft says it is incorporating feedback but does not disclose the feedback’s content. The release notes and Windows Central report provide no representative survey, usage figures, or other measure showing broad support for or rejection of Copilot. The app version and rollout date identify the update; they are not evidence of user sentiment.

For the company’s latest stated status, check the Copilot on Windows release notes. During a preview, feature availability may change as updates roll out, so a feature’s presence or absence on one device does not establish its status for all Windows 11 users.
