If Microsoft Teams emojis are not working, first check whether the issue is with inserting an emoji, reacting to a message, or using your organization’s custom emoji. Try the emoji picker and a shortcode such as :smile:, then test Teams on the web; if the problem is limited to the desktop app, reset the local data for the Teams version you use.
First, check which emoji feature is failing
Teams has separate controls for inserting an emoji into your message, reacting to someone else’s message, and using custom organization emoji. A problem with one does not necessarily affect the others.

Quick fixes for Teams emojis
- Confirm that you are in the compose box. In a chat or channel, select Emoji, GIFs and Stickers beside the message box. Choose an emoji from the gallery or search for one, then select Send.
- Try a shortcode. Click in the compose box and type a colon followed by the emoji name, such as :smile:. Select a suggestion or press Enter to insert the top match. This can help distinguish a picker issue from a broader sending problem.
- Try Teams on the web. Test the same chat or channel in a supported browser. If emojis work there but not in the desktop app, the local app or its installation may be the issue.
- Restart Teams completely. Quit the application rather than merely closing the current chat, then reopen it.
- Check another conversation. Test a one-to-one chat and a channel message. If the picker fails everywhere, investigate the app; if it fails only in one location, an account, policy, or conversation-specific issue may be involved.
- Update or reinstall Teams if the problem persists. An outdated or damaged installation can prevent interface components from loading correctly.
How to add an emoji on mobile
In the Teams app for iPhone or Android, tap Emoji beneath the compose box. Choose a gallery, then choose the emoji. Microsoft lists galleries including Smilies, Hand gestures, People, Animals, Food, Travel and places, Objects, Activities, and Symbols.
Teams reactions are not the same as inserted emojis
To react to a message in the desktop or web app, hover over it and select a quick reaction. Select More reactions to see the full list. Teams supports up to 20 reactions per message. Selecting a reaction you already added removes your reaction.

On iOS or Android, touch and hold the message, then tap the reaction you want. Microsoft also documents up to 20 reactions per message on mobile.
Restore or change the quick-reaction row
If your preferred reaction disappeared from the shortcut row:
- Hover over a message and select More reactions.
- Select Customize default reactions.
- Remove a reaction by hovering over it and selecting the X in its upper-right corner.
- Select the plus sign to add another reaction.
The quick-reaction row supports up to five favorites.
Change the reaction skin tone
Hover over a message, select More reactions → Customize default reactions, choose a skin tone, and select Save. This changes the appearance of supported hand and people reactions; it does not repair a picker that fails to open.

Microsoft’s current documentation says recently used emojis and reactions sync between desktop and mobile. An empty or inconsistent Recent list is therefore not the documented normal behavior once synchronization has reached your account.

Verify that you are signed into the same work or school account on both devices. Send an emoji, wait briefly, and reopen the picker on the second device. If the lists remain inconsistent, sign out and back in on the affected client, then reset its local Teams data using the instructions below.
Custom organization emoji not showing
Custom emoji can be used in chat, channel, and meeting messages, replies, and as reactions. An administrator can restrict who may create or delete custom emoji. If the organization’s emoji category is absent, the feature may be unavailable under your organization’s policy rather than broken on your computer.
Insert or create a custom emoji
To use one, select Emoji, GIFs and Stickers → Emoji → Your org’s emoji. If your account is allowed to create one, select Add emoji, choose a JPEG, PNG, or GIF, give it a name, and select Add emoji again. Microsoft recommends square images and files under 256 KB; uploaded images are compressed.
To use a custom emoji as a reaction, hover over the message and select More reactions → Your org’s emoji.
Why a deleted custom emoji may still appear
Right-click the custom emoji, select Delete, and confirm. It disappears immediately from the deleting user’s list, but Microsoft says it can take a few days to disappear for everyone else. Clearing the Teams cache can make it disappear locally sooner.

Reset New Teams on Windows
Do not use the classic Teams folder path for New Teams. Microsoft documents the Windows reset option or the New Teams local-data path below.
Use Windows’ supported reset option
- Open Settings from Windows Search.
- Go to Apps → Installed apps.
- Search for Microsoft Teams.
- For New Microsoft Teams, select the … button.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Under Reset, select Reset.
- Restart Teams and test the emoji picker.
Resetting deletes Teams app data, including personalization settings. You may need to configure some preferences again.
Delete New Teams’ local files
Use this method if the Windows reset option does not resolve the issue:
- Quit Teams completely.
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter this path: %userprofile%\appdata\local\Packages\MSTeams_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalCache\Microsoft\MSTeams
- Select OK.
- Delete all files and folders in that directory.
- Start Teams again.
Microsoft instructs users to delete all files and folders in the specified directory, not just a folder named Cache. The first launch can take longer while Teams rebuilds its local files.
Reset classic Teams on Windows
If you are using the classic desktop client, quit Teams, press Windows + R, enter %appdata%\Microsoft\Teams, and select OK. Delete all files and folders in that directory, then restart Teams. This procedure is for classic Teams; using it for New Teams may leave its local data untouched.

Reset Teams on macOS
Quit Teams by pressing Command + Q. Open Finder → Applications → Utilities → Terminal.
Classic Teams
Run: rm -r ~/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/Teams
New Teams
Run each command separately:
- rm -rf ~/Library/Group Containers/UBF8T346G9.com.microsoft.teams
- rm -rf ~/Library/Containers/com.microsoft.teams2
Restart Teams after the commands finish. The first restart can take longer while the application rebuilds its cache.
When the problem is policy or account-related
Clearing the cache will not restore a feature that your organization has disabled. Contact your Teams administrator if:
- Your org’s emoji is missing for every user or channel.
- You can use standard emoji but cannot create custom emoji.
- Custom emoji work for some accounts but not yours.
- Reactions are unavailable across desktop or web and mobile.
- The issue began after an organizational policy or Teams administration change.
Tell the administrator whether the picker opens, whether standard emoji appear, whether shortcodes work, and whether the problem affects chats, channels, meetings, or all three.

Recommended troubleshooting order
- Test the normal picker and a shortcode such as :smile:.
- Test a different chat or channel.
- Try Teams on the web or on mobile.
- Restart Teams and verify that you are using the correct account.
- Reset local data using the instructions for New Teams or classic Teams.
- Ask your administrator about custom emoji, reactions, or messaging policies.
This sequence helps distinguish a temporary interface failure from a local-data issue or an organization-level restriction.

Distinguish inserted emojis from reactions and custom organization emoji. Test the picker and a shortcode, try another Teams client, and then reset the correct local data for New Teams or classic Teams. Microsoft documents synchronization of recently used emojis and reactions across desktop and mobile. Check that both clients use the same account, sign out and back in, and reset the affected client if the lists remain inconsistent.
Can I create custom Teams emojis on my phone?
Microsoft documents custom emoji creation through the desktop or web app. Its mobile instructions do not provide a path for creating custom memes or stickers.
Will clearing the Teams cache delete my chats?
The cache procedures remove local Teams files, not the server-held chat history. The New Teams Windows Reset option deletes app data, including personalization settings, so you may need to restore preferences afterward.
