The Surface Pro 11 is a convincing step forward for Microsoft’s tablet-and-kickstand PC: its Snapdragon X processors deliver strong performance, and an independently tested OLED configuration paired a sharp, color-accurate screen with unusually long video-loop battery life. But it is not a universal laptop replacement. The keyboard and pen cost extra, the physical ports are limited, and buyers should verify that their essential Windows apps work on Arm before choosing it.

What is the Surface Pro 11?

Microsoft introduced the Surface Pro 11th Edition on May 20, 2024, with availability at key retailers worldwide beginning June 18, 2024, according to Microsoft’s launch announcement. It is a 13-inch Windows tablet with a built-in kickstand and detachable keyboard support. The 2024 generation moves to Qualcomm Snapdragon X Series processors and is available in configurations with LCD or OLED screens; not every Surface Pro 11 has OLED or the same processor.

Microsoft described the new model as up to 90% faster than the Surface Pro 9. That is a manufacturer comparison, not an independently reproduced benchmark. Its announcement also describes the Copilot+ platform’s NPU capability as over 45 trillion operations per second (TOPS); that figure describes hardware capability, not a guarantee that every AI task will be faster or useful.

How good are the screen and performance?

The OLED Surface Pro 11 reviewed by IT Pro produced strong display measurements: 620.4 cd/m² peak brightness, 99.9% sRGB coverage, 98.9% DCI-P3 coverage, and an average Delta E of 0.78 in the review’s sRGB-profile test. These are results for IT Pro’s tested OLED unit and methods, not specifications guaranteed for every configuration. The LCD version is a distinct option, so choose by the screen technology listed for the specific model you are buying.

IT Pro tested a Snapdragon X Elite Surface Pro 11 with 16GB of memory. That unit scored 13,134 in Geekbench 6 multi-core and 104 single-core and 802 multi-core in Cinebench 24. The scores indicate substantial performance in those tests, but they should not be treated as a promise that every X Plus or X Elite configuration will produce the same results in every workload.

Microsoft’s announcement specifies Snapdragon X Plus with a 10-core CPU or Snapdragon X Elite with a 12-core CPU for the relevant models. The faster-screen combination is not the only configuration decision: processor, memory, display, and regional availability vary. Check the exact specification of the listed unit rather than assuming an entire Surface Pro 11 product line has one set of components.

How long does the battery last?

In IT Pro’s video-loop test, its reviewed Surface Pro 11 OLED ran for 16 hours and 28 minutes with the display set to 170 cd/m². In the same publication’s test, a Surface Pro 9 ran for under nine hours. Those are review results under that test’s conditions, not estimates of guaranteed everyday use.

Microsoft publishes separate battery-test figures for preproduction configurations, including specified Wi-Fi video and web tests at 150-nit brightness. Those manufacturer tests use different methods and conditions from IT Pro’s loop, so their results should not be directly combined. Microsoft cautions that actual battery life varies substantially with settings and use; see its Surface Pro Snapdragon technical specifications for its test notes.

What are the ports and display options?

The tablet has two USB4 ports, as well as Surface Connect according to IT Pro’s review. Microsoft says it supports up to three external 4K displays. That support claim does not mean the tablet has a large selection of built-in connections: the physical port set is limited, and a dock may be useful for a desktop setup or for connecting external displays. Consider how many peripherals you connect directly before deciding whether the tablet alone suits your desk.

Microsoft also lists Wi-Fi 7 and optional 5G in its launch announcement. Availability depends on configuration and region, so confirm the feature on the particular model being sold. For the manufacturer’s feature and accessory details, consult Microsoft’s Surface Pro (11th Edition) features page.

Is Windows on Arm compatible with your apps?

The Snapdragon X platform runs Windows on Arm. Compatibility is therefore a practical buying check, particularly if your work depends on specialized business software, device drivers, peripherals, or games. The review found application compatibility incomplete and cautioned against assuming every Windows program is ready for Arm.

  • Check with the software publisher that the current version of each essential application supports Windows on Arm, or confirm that its supported emulation path meets your needs.
  • Check compatibility for required peripherals and their drivers, not just the main application.
  • If your work depends on a particular app or device, verify support before purchasing rather than relying on a general claim that Windows software runs.

How much do the keyboard and pen add?

The Surface Pro 11 is sold as a tablet; Microsoft states that its keyboard and Surface Slim Pen (2nd Edition) are sold separately. That makes the total cost of a laptop-style setup higher than the tablet price alone. Confirm that the bundle or configuration you are considering actually includes the accessories you need, and check regional availability and compatibility on Microsoft’s technical-specification page.

IT Pro found the optional Pro Flex Keyboard comfortable to type on despite limited key travel, with a small but usable touchpad. Its ability to operate detached, highlighted by Microsoft, gives more placement flexibility than a keyboard that must remain physically attached. The reviewer found the pen holder awkward to retrieve quickly. These details matter if you plan to use the tablet as your main laptop or frequently switch between typing and handwriting.

Who should buy the Surface Pro 11?

The Surface Pro 11 makes the most sense for someone who values a tablet’s portability and kickstand flexibility, wants the option of a detachable keyboard, and has confirmed that their essential software works on Windows on Arm. The OLED configuration adds a particularly capable screen, while the Snapdragon platform represents a significant performance and battery-life step in the independent review’s testing.

A conventional laptop may be the simpler choice if you always use a fixed keyboard, need more ports without a dock, or cannot risk a compatibility gap with a critical application or peripheral. The Surface Pro 11’s capabilities do not remove those trade-offs, and the separately purchased keyboard and pen can make its overall setup costly. Microsoft also says the device enclosure includes 72% recycled content, with the claim applying to the enclosure rather than the whole device and subject to the validation basis noted in its launch announcement.

Verdict

IT Pro called the Surface Pro 11 the best Surface Pro to date. Its review supports that verdict for buyers whose applications suit Windows on Arm: the tested OLED model combined excellent display measurements with strong benchmark results and a long video-loop runtime. Still, it is a tantalizing glimpse rather than a no-compromises future—screen and processor depend on configuration, accessories are extra, ports are sparse, and compatibility deserves a careful check before purchase.
